Introduction

Containing a number of both military and civilian organizations, including those of a paramilitary nature, the Rhodesian Security Forces are the combined national defense apparatus of the Republic of Greater Rhodesia. Currently, the entirety of the Rhodesian Security Forces is numbered at 1,530,000 personnel, constituting one of the largest and most advanced militaries on the African continent. The Security Forces comprise of three military branches: the Rhodesian Army, the Rhodesian Air Force, and the Guard Force; a national police force: the British South Africa Police; and a civilian intelligence agency: the Central Intelligence Organization.

The Rhodesian Security Forces are nominally commanded by the President of Greater Rhodesia (currently, President Richard Acheson) though in practice, they are run by the Security Forces High Command and supported by the civilian Ministries of Defence and Internal Affairs, all of which are under the de facto purview of the Prime Minister (Mark Anders).

The Rhodesian Security Forces are charged with protecting the Greater Rhodesian homeland and its protectorates, promoting Greater Rhodesian national and security interests at home and abroad, and supporting the stability of the African continent and, to an extent, the world at large. The Security Forces noted for their heavy integration of both civilian and military branches, and for their heavy emphasis on unique capabilities units and special operations forces, largely due to their history as a counterinsurgency force, a role for which they have acquired substantial prowess.

Under the British Imperial sphere of influence, Rhodesian armed forces participated in World War I, World War II, the Malayan Emergency. The Security Forces are particularly noted for the Rhodesian Bush War, a conflict that lasted from 1964 until 1979, and occurred between Rhodesian forces and USSR-supported Marxist and PRC-backed Maoist terrorist groups. The Bush War placed a terrible strain upon the RhSF, a relatively small and poorly-equipped military, facing embargoes and abandonment by the rest of the world. However, the Rhodesian forces were able to overcome these obstacles with a stunning display of ingenuity in the development of new equipment and vehicles and the creation and adoption of effective counterinsurgency tactics. Most recently, RhSF forces have seen major combat action in the 1999 Protective Occupation of Nyasaland (Malawi) and the 2004 Reclamation of Northern Rhodesia (a.k.a. Invasion of Zaire).
