History:
The isle of Krot was originally settled by wanderers in 600 BC. These people established villages centered around pastoral farming of goats and sheep. While not practicing much worship beyond mysticism, the people were fascinated and terrified by a crack in the ground, opened by a great tremor before their arrival. Still belching smoke and fumes occasionally, the people credited it to a great bull god, chained beneath the surface.

The arrival of the Koroti in around 520 BC was a violent one. They subjugated the native herders around their camp, beached their ships and made to stay. Originally hailing from mainland Greece, the Koroti were a seafaring race of pirates and traders.

Naming the city Korotos, the invaders mostly abandoned their life of piracy to become a city-state. Roving around the growing port, they enslaved and interbred with the islanders who were not a warlike people. Although the Koroti continue their worship of the Greek Pantheon, elements of the island's mysticism, including the minotaur, have been incorporated into their beliefs.

Society:
Although they abandoned piracy long ago, the Koroti still possess a rough culture, considered less refined than many mainland states. A nation of seafarers and goat herders, they tend to value wineries over speaking chambers.

Ruled over by a king who claims descendancy from the captain who led them to the island, the people enjoy limited civil rights from the laws he imposes. Traders, although taxed, are numerous and encouraged by the city authorities. Outside of the city, a large rural community supports the Koroti with limited arable farming, livestock, olive groves and works the mines.

Discovered in 430 BC, limited gold and copper mines have sparked a fashion for jewellry crafting in the city, which has become an exporter of such goods. The proximity of the mines to the crevice of the 'minotaur' attaches a degree of superstition to the metals mined there.

Military:

The strength of Korotos lies in it's navy, which is considerable for a Greek nation. Harnessing both sails and oars, galleys from Korotos carry bronze rams and archers, while many of the crew fight as axemen.

On land, the Koroti muster hoplite style spearmen which fight in a phalanx which is lighter and less disciplined than mainland Greek nations. To compensate, axemen equipped with wooden shields are often used to break enemy phalanxes, expert at slashing and pushing through their pikes to the troops on the other side. Due to the limited numbers of horses on the island, the Koroti field no cavalry.
