If Only Under Better Circumstances. (FT Sign-up/Interest/OOC thread)

Greywatch

My god I'm actually setting up a thread....

Okay, I've been wanting to add a new alien race to the Greywatch Empire for awhile now and really haven't been able to decide how I wanted to do it. I already knew I didn't want to just have them randomly appear, and I also knew I didn't want to make one a story which no one else could participate in... so I came up with something a little different. But due to my not wanting to explain everything right here and now, a sampling for you all:

The captain frowned, “Goddamn them, whoever they were…” The Xarniosi left the captain to go back to his work. The captain shrugged before leaving the docking bay. She was infuriated that this had happened and wished to get to the bottom of it as soon as possible. But first, she had to send a report of events and discoveries thus far to Prime. She thought back to the briefing she’d been giving: an Exploration ship had found an alien race and made contact. Reports came back twice a day until two days ago, when the ship suddenly stopped sending anything at all. Then, a day later, an emergency beacon was picked up. That was when the council decided to send military assistance. Now that assistance was here, but other than the obvious signs of an attack, the investigation wasn’t turning up too much. The captain knew that a top priority was to locate Phoenix, he was spearheading operations on the ground, and his abilities would be needed for this assignment. She also knew she was going against time here; she needed to get to the bottom of this and fast. Not only was there a good chance of the already cold trail going colder, but knowing the way the galaxy worked, there was a strong possibility that someone else picked up the distress beacon.

And now for some backstory, very simplistic backstory mind you, I have the first post ready but I don't really feel like putting it up without at least knowing if anyone is interested in this... Here goes:

Greywatch explorers were doing what explorers do and found a new world and a new race. Things went peachy for a few days, and then said explorers were attacked and Greywatch Prime losty all contact with them. Investigation team was sent out to find out what happened, all they know is that the exploration ship was destroyed, and the surface was attacked. Yes, an NPC race of nameless aliens (at least I don't have a name for them yet) came in and kicked everyone's ass. Now Greywatch wants to find out what happened, locate the threat, and get some revenge. Now as stated in that sample, a beacon was activated so (assuming others are interested) you'd all be dropping in prolly because you got the message and decided to check it out (I'm assuming).

This is meant to be small and isolated. By that I mean I want about 2-3 people involved, 4 at the very most. It will be a sort of first contact/mystery/typical FT war RP so it's got a little of everything. If anyone's actually interested, post here and I'll be sure to scoop out more details.

Wow, I've actually gotten people interested. I suppose I'll be starting the RP in the next day or so, just need to see if anyone else out there wants in on this.

Ah yes, Telros, I'll be sure to restrain myself so you don't have to read 6 pages everytime you log on.

EDIT: Welcome, TSA, unless one more really wants to jump on I'll be getting this thing underway soon.

Rock on.

13-09-2008, 05:02
Just to make this clear, everyone will probably need the three following things:

1) Main Char(s), not neccisary but people typically like to use them
2) Red shirts (at least I think that's the term) or expendables. Yes, people are going to die, a lot of them, probably in terrible ways. This leads to the third point...
3) Willingness to let me godmod a little when refering to said expendables. Nothing major, I'm not going to wipe out an entire army or something, I'm going to maybe have someone's head blown off, or have someone thrown into a tree, or have someone crushed... yadda yadda yadda. Again, this is with your permission and will not involve main chars, only the expendable ones. Nor will I do this often.
The Second Alliance
13-09-2008, 05:09
Sounds good to me. Main characters I have in spades... 23 central characters specifically. Red shirts... well, the Second Alliance may not be able to expend endless ranks of men, but we have enough for a few strategic gore fountains. As for the godmodding, I think it's safe to say that since you just asked our permission, it's not godmodding, since I consider godmodding killing off either endless ranks of red shirts simulataneously or main characters with no prior warning. Besides, that is what red shirts are for: dying in entertaining and graphic manners. This should be quite entertaining. Get out the bioguns! :gundge:
Greywatch
13-09-2008, 05:16
Well I just want to make sure. Anyway, no one's going to need endless numbers of men. As the story progresses it'll become more apparent how many soldiers one will need.
Also, just to add, I'm going to do my best to keep this story fluid. I'll also throw in plenty of, 'save the civilians in that convoy who might have information or get the extra soldiers with the heavy weapons who were shot down over yonder?' situations.

13-09-2008, 05:20
Ahh, the redshirt. Yes, the Holy Imperium, as you probably can guess, has many a hapless soul willing to sacrifice him/herself for the glory of the Emperor. Feel free to torture, shoot, stab, cut, maim, butcher, impale, blow up, vaporize, or slice to pieces as many Angenterian Imperial Guardsmen you see fit.

I'll keep that in mind, though if/when I do begin investing in senseless violence, I'll try to keep it high-end senseless violence.

Sounds reasonable to me.

Also guys, just to let you know, while my factbook isn't done, I'll do my best to keep it up to speed, so that when we get into combat scenarios, you'll be able to look up weapons, avatar types, starships, and other vehicles as they're introduced, as well as a headcount of how many this fleet strength possesses and where. This way you guys don't left in the dust.

Here it be. (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=565836)

Out of curiosi ywill i be yelled at if i use my Hive ships black hole inducing capabilities to suck the AA defenses into nothingness? Assuming they are the flying type that is lol

So you want a run down on what happened to the Ciscilians huh? Well, the simple way to outline it up to "now" is in bullet points:

Palleon has discussion with Drone
Palleon returns to Ciscilian Empire and files report
Report is analysed by Ciscilian Central Beauracracy
Several logical and moral dilemas raised by the Drone are identified and presented to Ciscilian Council
Ciscilian Conucil engages in vicious debate, numerous protocals are shown to have moral issues associated with them
Klikiss Breedex's collectivly file a request for increased independance in governing themselves
Request approved in light of recent ethical revisions
Numerous Ciscilian governed species utilise the Drones argument on morality to press for their independance
Requests appoved
Breedexs begin scanning worlds and venturing outside their assigned routines
Ciscilian Empire is replaced with the Ciscilian Ascendency
Large majority of races are released from Ciscilian governance under new "Instinctive Equality Act"
Isolationist measures put in place, Ciscilian forces withdraw to Ascendency territory
Breedexs begin launching their own investigations and activities
Events of "If Only Under Better Circumstances"

Now i'm looking for an oppertunity to send a Breedex into a Great Swarming, that will start the others of and i won't need to bother with the Ciscilians lol.

Congrats Greywatch, one of your little Drones did that lol

Nice, Utopian.

yeah, that's usually how things get started. Somewhere, someone makes an intelligent remark about the state of things. Someone, somewhere more important politically, listens. They begin to bring it up themselves, getting other politicians talking. Debates ensue. Political turmoil may ensue. In the most extreme cases, wars can ensue (see the Commonwealth of the Second Alliance, which was founded after a brutal cival war with an oppressive, racist oligarchy). People calm down. They start to agree. The people make a unified stand. That one intelligent person's remark becomes national/international/interstellar policy. That one intelligent person says 'I told you so' to everyone. Everyone tells him to soak his head.

Ah, the smell of political and ethical progress.

lol, except the Drones been praised across the Ciscilian Ascendency :P Shame no one knows lol
Angenteria
18-09-2008, 21:34
You see, it doesn't work that way in the Holy Imperium of Angenteria, mainly since the Emperor's bloodline centers around the Angenterian religion, just about everyone accepts their place in life. The bloodline of the Angenterian Emperor has been going on since wayyyyyyy back in Pre-MT times, and thousands of years later in FT times, people generally accept the fact of the Emperor's right to rule. In their personal lives, however, the people are mostly unopressed. They can vote for local elections, and representatives in the High Lords. They can think what they want, and say what you want (as long as the Arbitrators aren't listening.) Those with differing political opinions are viewed upon as blaspheming heretics, because everything governmental has been existing for, by this time, literally thousands of years.
A Utopian Soviet Union
18-09-2008, 21:41
Well, i'm switching to the Klikiss now and they don't have politics or culture or "civilization".

Just instinct, logic and knowledge. As far as they're concerned that's all a species needs to know, they see the galaxy as one large ecosystem, each race should pursue it's instinctual behaviour, hence why they are bemused by races (particuarly humans) covering their normally aggressive nature with "culture". It's all about survivial of teh fittest and natural selection as far as they are concerned, they think that if it was not for culture then humanity would be stronger. After all, the weak are continually weeded out that way.

What makes this funny is that a creature originally made to be an expendable super-soldier just changed a system of government.
A Utopian Soviet Union
18-09-2008, 21:55
Thats what occoured to me lol. You were putting intelligent covnersation into the words of a creature which was built for war more than anything else, i mena, the other drones i've seen of yours are blunt and dismissive. The most seriously flawed race howeve happened to come into contact with the one drone that managed to do what it did lol.

Ah well, i realised that i like the Klikiss, they were different, more unique as opposed to the dozens of humanoids out there, so i thought i'd bring them in. So i needed a story of how they broke off, and then i thought back to Palleons conversation and the drone and the idea hit me. Now i'm waiting got the Breedexs to receive some stimulus to send them into a Great Swarm, then the others may follow suit and i might start up a thread about it or soemthing... shall have to ponder.

Sorry bout dropping this down in the middle of the conversation, but I forgot to post who qualifies as a redshirt as far as the Second Alliance goes:

GROUND-BASED REDSHIRTS

Any Infantry with the rank of "Sergeant Major" (Platoon Commander) and lower. These are mostly unnamed grunts and doughboys of varrying rank. Kill them in droves.
Hardsuit Legionaires are specialist forces (usually Stormtroopers, who serve as elite shocktroopers and close quarters combatants with their mass produced mono-molecular swords. This picture is exactly what they look like. Note that the Azure Gaurd are a sub-group of the Stormtrooper Legion (http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o316/Founderdude/StormtrooperHardsuit.png)) and are pretty rare. On foot, they are expert soldiers with ridiculous resolve. Their powered armor gives them greater strength, speed, hand eye coordination, and they are frequently augmented to boot. Toe-to-toe against most conventional humanoid infantry, they'd have little difficulty. Against unconvetional weapons or particularly powerful foes, they start to die. If you kill them, kill them spectacularly.
Avatar* pilots who are not legionaires or elite troopers can die as much as you want, but they can take a bit of a beating (they're designed to go toe-to-toe with tanks and armored vehicles and keep truckin, so anything around the size of a heavy ordinance round or bigger can gut them outright, and they can go down to sustained weapons fire like Grenades, heavy machine guns, anti-material sniper rifles, around there. They are unphased by all but the most concentrated of light firearms volleys from handheld weapons of most sorts, including most assault-style rifles). They are armed with a heated chainblade built into the avatar's left arm for close quarters combat, automatically reconfiguring rifles (can change between conventional assault rifle mode with three-round-bursts, to a high speed surpression mode with full-auto firing rate but shart-for-accuracy, to a high-velocity mode which is slightly more accurate and slighty longer range then the assault mode but only capable of semi-automatic fire. All modes use the same ammunition, a high impact anti-light vehicle armor penetrating round. The varying modes allow for tactical flexibility, but do not replace specialists. For example, the high-velocity mode doesnt compete with a true avatar sniper rifle), and a small missile launcher with four rounds each (anti-vehicle, can pop tanks and offer extremely short range AA fire). They can die in droves, but it's much harder to kill them then infantry. For all intents, treat them as you would a medium/heavy armored vehicle if it could walk (since that's what it is really). Alliance uses the 17' tall robotic constructs as the core of it's military.
Legionaire Avatars are not run-of-the-mill grunts, and so follow the same rules with killing them as you would killing Hardsuit legionaires: they can die, but they should die spectacularly, and certainly not in droves.
Leviathans are to Avatars what tanks are to humans: juggernauts. They are around 100' long from head to armored tail, around 40' tall at the shoulder, and can carry six avatars in their armored carapace. They tote a pair of OLCs (Offensive Linear Cannons the smaller anti-warship guns on my starships) on a swiveling back-mounted turret, heavy anti-vehicle chainguns under their chins, articulated robotic maws big enough to consume an avatar whole and have enough armor to shrug off direct artillery hits. They serve as mobile strongholds super-heavy avatar transports and are so big they require three pilots to control the machine with direct neural links (one driver actually drives the thing, one gunner for the back mounted turret, and an engineer to coordinate the gunner and driver's efforts, as well as modulate the Leviathan's Chernokov Reactor and forward mounted shield projector). They are too big to be transported by other means then by specially designed lander craft which glide the arthropodal contruct to the ground. They can barrel through forests like straw and buildings like sand castles. There are a total of sixteen in a Fleet Strength. You can kill off at most eight, but no matter what, don't kill off the one named "Black Leviathan 13". That warmachine and it's three man crew is to be considered a named character for purposes of red-shirt-dom. These things are the nastiest thing that can end up on the ground save Virgil in his personal avatar himself, so kill them off with the biggest stuff you've got. I'm talking orbital bombardment and other monster constructs here.
Virgil's Avatar. Not killable. Worst case scenario, he space folds outta there. I trust you won't go there. :D

If you want to kill a starship, Atlas-class destroyers are fair game, and frigates can be destroyed with some difficulty. The carrier and Virtue of Might can be damaged significantly, but certainly not destroyed or crippled.

There ya go... big ass post done...

*(PS, AVATAR stands for AdVanced ATtack ARmor if you hadn't caught that)

I will post Greywatch units and their stats, as well as those of your enemy, up on this thread when things really get under way.

First thing I'll put up:

The CCT (Crisis Care Team): This is a special team of operatives that are made to deal with the worst of situation. This typically means that your going to see a mix of different Greywatch units working as one group. This group includes:

Crisis Response Unit: A ten foot tall battle suit with enough weapons to call itself a single-man strike force. It wields heavy artillary weapons on its right shoulder, and typically dual wields other heavy weapons in its hands (gatling cannons, plasma blasters, antimatter assault cannons, flamethrowers, etc). The helmet of the suit can switch between many different types of vision and the left shoulder has been known to harbor rocket launchers in some situations. The best part about the suit is that weapons can be added and taken off with ease (and with the proper equipment). These units are heavily armored and demand respect but are typically the first things enemies will concentrate on. The backs can be fitted with either jetpacks, personal blink generators, or shield generators.

Commandos: They are the badasses. Their armor is heavy but modified in such a way that the wearer becomes much stronger and faster. Boost jets on the back allow the commando to 'rush' or slam into enemies, crushing bones and knocking enemies over. Commandos typically have a light shoulder mounted weapon such as a single mini bolter turret. Commandos like to use rocket/grenade launchers but always carry an assault rifle, just in case. The hets used in their rush ability also allow them to jump much higher than others to gain advantages.

Scouts: These units travel some distance away from the group, typically in front, to the sides, and behind. They keep an eye out for anything bad that might be coming. Their armor automatically changes color patterns to match the terrain they're on. They are equiped with pistols and SMGs, both of which are silenced. Their helmets have some of the best optical enhancments and are second only to the sniper.

Grenadier: These are heavily armored, slow units which have a special storage device in their armor allowing them to carry several grenades of varrrying classes. Otherwise, grenadiers use Banishers.

That's pretty much the CCT. Typically one CRU, two commandos, four scouts, and two grenadiers.
Angenteria

To start off, I'm only landing with a small number of elite troops (you can kill the Stormtroopers, that's fine.) I won't be landing in force unless the situation requires it, then you can see the Imperial Navy Troopers and Guardsmen in action (again, also killable) and heavy vehicles (very destroyable.)

Inquisitorial Stormtroopers are armed with a repeating laser rifle, with attached bayonet for close combat. Sergeants carry swords and pistols. They are granted heavier body armor then other regular troopers, due to their elite status.

Navy Troopers carry shorter submachine-gun versions of the standard laser rifle and bayonets. They have lighter body armor then Stormtroopers.

Guardsmen are the main infantry unit of the Holy Imperium. Standard-issue laser rifles and bayonets, their armor is also the lightest.

Well I guess I better start up my response to you all...
Telros
20-09-2008, 03:20
Well, I need to post for one, but there is something that needs to be clear up before I do.

Um, Utopian, you seem to have forgotten the idea of how kinetic force works. Those MAC guns are being fired at high speeds, and you have weapons that are the equivalent of many nuclear bombs going off. They are being directly transported in a way, yes, but you still are shooting high speed things and they are going to land instantaneously basically.

You are going to wipe out the entire base and everyone around it, not to mention that's a big sign of HERE I AM, something I think the Greywatch people warned us not to do. You're going to wipe out a considerable portion of the ground there.
Greywatch
20-09-2008, 03:25
I'm glad you cleared that up, Telros. I too thought that would practically wipe out the entire base but wasn't sure about the exact damage a MAC gun would do.
Telros
20-09-2008, 03:43
If it was a normal railgun, it'd be a group of normal nukes going off at once. And that's per shell. Now, he has it simply fire then teleport, so its not AS bad. But it still has its power from being fired and thats enough to wipe out the base, killing everything in a large radius. Shockwaves, flying rubble, intense heat, etc.
The Second Alliance
20-09-2008, 05:44
On the scale he's using, yes, you'd be right. However, if we give them (the Klikiss) the benefit of the doubt, it's a different story.

Railguns/coilguns/linear cannons/mass drivers don't always need to fire their shells at the same velocity. It'd be perfectly possible to fire the shell at only a few times the speed of sound or even slower, and the resulting impact wouldn't be much more worse than a small couple hundred tons of explosive, since the majority of output from those guns is all based on kinetic energy, as Telros pointed out, and since E=mc2, the majority of power gained and lost is based off of velocity, not size. MAC guns and Mass Drivers are usually among the most powerful projectile weapons because their shells go somewhere in the area of 5/8ths the speed of light once they leave the barrel when firing full tilt (at least, that's an Alliance Mass Driver's maximum shell velocity in a full vacuum with optimum conditions). But as Utopian put it, it was only at speeds exceeding the speed of sound. The resulting explosion would be impressive, but not too far off from a particularly heavy ordinance round if you take it at mach 1.5 through mach 3. There might be collateral damage to the Klikiss structures, but not fatal damage.

I'd assume that the Klikiss would be intelligent enough to note that a max-velocity impact from their MAC guns would probably level the entire area, kill Pheonix and all those down there, and so have turned down the speed on those rounds. As far as I can see, it'd be the best way to compromise here: the Klikiss fired their shells at "low velocity" (aka, below mach 3 or so), so not everyone on the ground was flash-fried by the concussive shockwave, and the explosions were controlled and reasonable.

That's my suggestion anyway. Take it with a grain of salt as necesary.
A Utopian Soviet Union
20-09-2008, 12:30
First off, i'd like to reassure The Second Alliance that although the Klikiss are somewhat... uncaring, about individual life forms, i wouldn't have dreamt of blowing your team to smithereens; nor myself for that matter.

As for the MAC cannons themselves, you hit the nail on the head in that the Klikiss are not entirely willing to blow their bases to smithereens. I should have probably stated the speed, or at least given a description of the kind of damage it could do but it was late and my mind wandered some what i think. In anycase, i was thinking of it's velocity being around 1.5, enough to smash the tripods into the ground as it were.

Or as Alliance put it so well, "a particuarly heavy ordinance round".

And Telros, it's not teleporting, it's opening a wormhole at the end of the weapon and opeing the other end of the wormhole so the projectile comes flying out at the enemy.

Sorry for causing confusion here, i've probably set the dam thread back a day... sorry.

In any case, if i had wanted to blast the entire area into a salt flat then i would have said so lol

Uncaring is all well and good but know this: if it continues, ICly Greywatch will have you leave. And for the sake of the thread I'll OOCly expect you to. When the captain said it was a Greywatch operation, she meant it. Anyone who endangers the rescue and investigation efforts becomes an enemy.

I understand.

Seeing as how this is going i may as well figure this out now. The thing the Klikiss are building is a transportal, they switch it on, configure it to the one in their hanger and they have instant access to the surface. Needelss to say reinforcements come pouring out carrying equiptment to be assembled into weapons and vehicles such as tripods.

I think i'll check now to see if that's alright... don't want to do it only to get another slap.

I'd say it's time for an IC neutral compromise. In a minute, Virgil is going to post IC. To give you guys the jist, at the high altitude, he intercepted up the Greywatch/Klikiss communications over his internal comm, and he'll pretty much say, 'Wait a minute guys, let's think this over.' and point out that as long as the Klikiss are entrenched there, the lions-share of this supposed enemy's strength is focused on them, and that this is an oppurtunity for the rest us to continue the search for Pheonix relatively unmolested. Effectively, let the Breedex stay where she is and duke it out with the enemy as a distraction, while the others will keep looking. If worse comes to worse, Virgil and his Bodygaurd will drop in to shield the Breedex's forces until they locate Pheonix.

I agree this is a Greywatch op, and that should be respected, so in the interests of compromise, I suggest that you effectively take a defensive stance and seek not to gain any ground at the moment, Utopian: Don't bring in your big guns, nor any more troops, cause that will simply escalate the battle, and until we find Pheonix, none of the rest of us can afford to get in the thick of in and possibly endanger Pheonix. Pretty much, cut your losses as is and use them for the better interest of the group, aka, distracting the enemy from us so we can search.

If you escalate things further, all that's going to happen is that our foe will send even more troops into the area, and the battlefield will expand, putting our search and rescue teams in jeopardy along with Pheonix. The best thing you can do right now is stop escalation here and now. Get your big ship away from the planet towards the rest of our fleet, stop any contruction your personnel are doing, and simply use what you've got left down there as a distraction. If they are wiped out, it could seve us even more, since that could lull our opposition into a false sense of security.

I actually have a response that's nearly ready. Truth is, spoiler, the captain is essentially going to use the Klikiss as bait whilest everyone else goes off on the stealth side of the operation.

Pretty much your best option.

Utopian, you'll have to hold out. If worse comes to worse, I'll assist any evac you'll want to make.

On Zero Punctuation, a game critic was reviewing the hate mail he got from reviewing SSBB and he used that line. Just google Zero Punctuation and click on the first link. You'll see a list of videos, one of them is called, 'Mailbag Showdown,' that's where the line is used.

Yahtzee is awesome!

Although he'll probably just flip me off if I told him that in person, and mutter something about how he doesn't need other people to tell him about how great he is.

Yahtzee is indeed awesome. And TSA, I have not had anyone before specify a speed, so I went with the general idea. If that is the way things are, then fine by me. I will now be posting.

EDIT: Post is up.

Telros, it's coo, sorry for posting you into the dust for a minute there. I didn't see the "wait up" post from Greywatch until it was too late. Anyway, from now on I'll try to keep an eye out for that and not force you to do the epic page and a half word document to keep up every time you post...
