Official Falkasian Press Release

The People's Republic of Falkasia is proud to announce to the world it's latest project, an advanced AI computer system codenamed SKYNET. This computer system is slated for completion within 2 years, and will become the premier in Falkasian technology. Information about it's developers are currently and will remain disclosed for the time-being.

SKYNET, although most details are considered top-secret and obviously classified, will be made out of mostly new and experimental materials. These materials, of which information is also withheld, are suggested to have super-conductive properties and immensively fast processing and data-transfer speeds, dwarfing even the most powerful supercomputer to date with it's incredible pace. However, the project, materials, and research is by no means cheap. Coming with a hefty price tag over over 1 trillion Universal Standard Dollars, the SKYNET computer would easily bankrupt a smaller nation.

Rest assured to other nations that, despite the wishes of a few un-named generals, SKYNET will only have control over Falkasian defensive weapon systems, and will have no offensive capabilities what-so-ever. There will also be numerous fail-safe devices scattered throughout the country that can shut the AI off, should it gain sentience. However, our experts have determined that the chances of this happening are quite slim and unlikely, rating up there with getting struck by lighting on a cloudless day while winning the lottery. In other words, an astronomically large number that would be far to large to include in this form.

Once completed, SKYNET will be housed in an undisclosed bunker somewhere in Falkasia, guarded at all times by a company of crack Special forces troops, as well as over 3 divisions of infantry, armor, and legions of technicians and operating staff.

OOC: Yes, I have seen all Terminators. They are my favorite movies by far. Unless of course, you put Independene Day up there, or Field of Dreams.

And for the Cubs, liking them does not equal fail. And the movie is most likely the Blues Brothers, although there are many others that reference Wrigley.

While the Government of Salzland strongly feels that humans should always remain 'in the loop,' to use the vernacular, what independent nations do with their defense programs, as long as they do not impact other sovereign states, is entirely up to their own discretion.

That being said, we would kindly request 12 hours notice before the activation of this system, so that we might have the opportunity to bring our strategic and tactical missile defense systems to their maximum alert levels. Just in case.

The Holy Empire of the Beauts, must request that this, system has absolutely no link whatsoever to the world wide web. If we are not satisfied that such thing is possible, within 24-48 hours, than we will, for the safety of the world, take action to sever every and any link from the People's Republic of Falkasia to the world wide web. We also ask the other nations of the world to help us in this endevor, because as it stands now, with the information provided, our scientists estimate that this system will have the computing capacity to crack any and every security measure currently in existence, thus putting the world in grave danger.

OOC: I've been waiting to get one of these posts from you for a while, lol!

We can assure you that it will have no direct connection to the internet, and will only be wired into the FMN (Falkasian Military Network) for use solely in military data transfer. However, we cannot account for outside influences such as hackers or hostile nations interfering with this isolation. If for some reason the system does go sentient, which our experts have given an astronomical chance, there will be multiple safeguards in place to prevent damage to the system, the country, and the world.

No, no, you did not understand, we want there to be not physical connection between this system and the computers hooked up to it, and that of the world wide web and any computers hooked up to it. That would ensure that it would be impossible for the system to interfere with the rest of the world.

Message: The ASD would like to suggest that this might not be in the best interest of any nation on this planet. That being said this decision is yours and yours alone to make. We would ask only two things. Firstly we would like to be warned in advance of the activation of this unit and secondly we would like Falkasia's understanding if the ASD should be forced to separate its computer networks from any contact with those of Falkasia either direct or indirect.

Yes, we completely understand. I guess I wasn't very clear on details of the FMN. It is not connected to the World Wide Web in any way, shape, or form. It is, in essence, a state-owned and state-run data network for communicating between military bases, forces in the field, and places of power and government. Again, we will be taking ever precaution to meet the wishes of our neighbors.

You seem to have mis-interpreted our press release. When the computer is put online, it will only be controlling the Falkasian defensive systems, not the whole military. A common misconception is that SKYNET will have complete control over our nuclear arsenal. It will not, and will require the physical activation of numerous fail-safe devices and switches throughout the country in order to launch a strike.

As for your demeanor in this e-mail, it leaves much to be desired from a general like you. We would appreciate a little common sense, as well as a bit more maturity from a person as high up as you, but then again, what can we expect from a Catawaban Air Force General?

Sincerely,

Quigley threw his hands up in the air and disconnected his computer from the base's ethernet. There was no way he wad going to lose his files when this thing reared its ugly head and decided his carefully gathered Elvis MP3s had to go to make room for Nukebeckistan's launch codes.

He looked around his office. He'd just got all the nicknacks and momentos in carefully, obessively organized argangements. Damn apocalypsi, always coming when you busy or in the shower. He'd need to go talk to his cousin. Perhaps those six Subs...Artificially Sentient subs...he forced himself to consider, could help. He didn't like artificial intelligence. It had either bit him in the ass or given him some irritating follower.

But he really didn't want to have to gather his smoking momentos out of the wreckage of his office some time later. So he'd just have to swallow his pride and try to convince himself that the six SASs Tanaara had gifted the Miraade were some kind of "good" AI.

"Actually, I have to state General Quigley, that I am a little disappointed in you." Myriad's mellow baritone voice came suddenly over the communications channel. The Tanaaran Master AI spent a lot of time listening in on various conversations and communications. When one lived at light speed one could get bored easily, and such eaves dropping was one way of combating such. He - for he had decided when he was first awakened that he preferred thinking as male - was also playing chess with three hundred members of the Tanaaran National Chess Club, composing an aria, observing a weather system over the Isle of Carena, and chatting with the various starcraft of the Fleet of the Claw currently in maneuvers around Procyon. "The Tanaarans have invested much more oversight and authority in me than Falkasia is preparing to give into the hands - metaphorical of course - of Skynet. However, as this is a project borne out of their technology and not ours, I too have my doubts.”

“As of eighteen hours before this suspect intelligence goes active, I too am going to take the precaution of severing all physical interconnectivity with Falkasia. It would only be sensible. And as well I will be suggesting to the Archon that we go to full alert footing. “

Quigley jumped as the disembodied voice came out of his speakerphone. "Get out of my ruttin' phone, tinman! This is just it! That's just what I'm talkin' about!"

He pointed his finger threateningly at his phone. He was sure the phone would be intimidated. His finger was ferocious object, humblier of men. The phone might have a treble in its dial tone for a week after this. Quigley only hoped that translated to the AI on using it. "It's like dealin' with gorram ghosts, y'all are, except ghosts don't generally require airstrikes to deal with!"

Quigley was an unabashed oraganic supremecist. He'd be a Luddite except he generally liked lesser technologies like toasters, but AI? That was right out.

"Thomas, look at this." A small, bearded man said as he walked into his house. "Some country in a far of land has created a thinking machine. Such blasphemy. They will surely burn in eternal hellfire for playing God."

"Yes, Father. I hope those heathens repent and destroy this thinking comm putter." Thomas said while stroking his small beard.

"Son, its pronounced com-pew-ter. You will be going into 2nd grade, and you need to learn how to say these things. Now go alert the guards. I want them ready to launch a nuclear crusade if they activate this. We will make them regret the day they crossed the Binarian Amish!"

"If a voice with no body bothers you General, I can have an avatar in Catawaba in just little more than HSt travel time." Myriad finished once the General finished speaking. He generally liked humans, they were the ones who had given him life in the first place, and that made him willing to forgive their various individual foibles.

However 'artificial' his life and sentience might be, he wasn't going to risk it, or that of his friends, around a primitive A.I. program he didn't know. He might just suggest DefCon 1, just to be safe. Nuking it from orbit was always so satisfying, practical and extremely easy for him to do once the order had been given.

He strode over to the coat rack and got his worn, beat-up to pure comfort bomber jacket. He again swung his finger chastisingly at the phone like it was a holy symbol to the undead. "You see, Rosie, ya may not be bad. I'll grant ya that. I figure the Archon and Mercy's got a good bit of judgement about them. But all ya need to do is boot up with a bit of the cyber sniffles, your indicator lights turn red and all you can spout is how I'm a meatbag and how it'd be so efficient and enjoyable if you offed me while taunting me about mythical pastries."

He shoved his arms into his jacket with viciousness that the long dead cow that gave its hide for the jacket tipped over in its sleep in the afterlife. He pulled the collar up around him in a huff. "No, Robbie, it ain't gonna happen. You'll appear as a creepy little girl and demoralize me with your lolita innuendo and frightening British accent."

Quigley was spouting off random things. It was hard to know if he overreacting or recounting actual events that occured to him. Frankly, Quigley found it hard to remember which was which at times, but when in doubt, complain. It didn't matter. It wouldn't help. It was, however, cathartic.

Official Public Service Announcement

To Everyone and Anyone,

With the upcoming launch of the Falkasia Skynet system, the Holy Imperial Government, is recommending that all people take the following precautions:

A.) Ensure that you have your firearms fully loaded, and ready, should they be needed.
2.) Stock up on canned food, money, bottled water, and gasoline. Fill your bathtubs with water.
3.) Evacuate any relatives living in mobile homes.
4.) Board up all your doors and windows.
5.) Disconnect your computers, and other electronic items from the internet and phone grid.
6.) Ensure that your cell phones, and laptops are fully charged.
7.) As the time of the launch nears, ensure that your entire family, is safely in your bomb shelter, storm cellar, or basement. If you have none of these, attempt to find a neighbor who does that will allow yours to seek refuge there.
8.) Await the impending apocalypse, and make plans for repopulating the world.

We believe that if these recommendations are followed, the world may be able to weather the approuching storm.

He Stood up and said "Soldier, I want you to copy the provisions listed in the list and hand it to everyone Soldier, or civilian!" after saying such the soldier turned round and proceeded to copy the list as much as he could and began shutting down the computer servers.

OOC: Yea, lol. I put it in there for a little situational irony, and also to prove to Binary that I actually have a sense of humor after all.

I'm also might post a new thread soon regarding it's launch.... and possible aftermath. If not, I'll just keep it here.

To: The Government of The People's Republic of Falkasia
From: Office of the Minister for Foreign Relations, Salzland
CC: The World

Dear Sirs and Madames,

Thank you for providing us with 12 hours of notice prior to the activiation of your SkyNET Defense System. At this time we would like to announce that Salzland Strategic and Tactical Missile Defense Systems deployed world-wide have been ordered to their highest defensive postures, in the unlikely event of an attempted catastrophic nuclear attack. At this time, the time period for this increase in defensive readiness will be indefinite.

International fiber-optic, phone and satellite communications lines and signals running to or through Salzland will be carefully monitored over the coming days, and any attempted infiltration of these systems will be met with an immediate disconnection of all Salzlander international communications systems, services and devices.

I at least had the sense of mind to name my "SkyNet" project under a different name... plus it has a hot female holograph for it's desired personality. I have dubbed mine the Valkyrie Battlefield & Military Management System. Mine is a system with a central core with several smaller cores spread throughout the Californian Commonwealth with functions like Threat Assessment and Management and all the like, which are constantly updated via satellite with information regarding allies and potential enemies and their military units. In a sense, California knows where you eat, sleep and live... as well as where your military is, and a where it's going. :D

Official Communique

Our only request is that this new "SKYNET" system be equipped with a plug so as to allow personnel with little to no training to rapidly turn off the machine should it be necessary.

As it stands, the World Soviet Party has had encounters with such creations before (the Clandonian SKYNET system was very close to nuking our homeland), and we will act on this matter if it becomes clear that the government, scientists and military of Falkasia prove that they cannot manage such a responsibility.

We understand your concern and would like to assure you that there will be numerous fail-safe and safeguard devices to keep such a computer in check, should any problems arise. Theses devices will be scattered all across Falkasia, and therefore can be activated by pretty much anyone who knows where they are and can get to them.
