The Fight for Alaska(E2)
Juneau, Alaska
A light snow was falling on the ground. President Ericsson looked out the window. The elections were coming soon, this was first term in office. He was preparing for the election. The other candidates were preparing for their campaigns, one of these opponents was Sen. Mikhail Konovalev, a politician was infamous for his colorful views on the TOA. The senator made remarks calling the alliance a "tyrant, self-serving pact" and "A stain on the face of the world". Konovalev had support in areas of Alaska, predominantly in Russian communities on the west coast. He now announced his candidacy for President. This election was to be a very important one, that had the ability to change Alaska and the international stage.
Nome, Alaska
Konovalev sits in his office in Nome, he also was preparing for the election. He was widely known for his views on the TOA. His plan for the presidency was to fight the oppressive alliance as he views it at every turn. He announced his candidacy and now, he was to fight to win the election and bring his plans to stop and prevent the tyrant TOA and it's puppet master Emperor. The TOA would dislike the idea of him winning but it's up to the Alaskans to decide neutrality or fight the largest international force.
Alaska Legislative Building, Juneau, Alaska
The Congress was in session, Sen. Konovalev was at his seat. He stood up and gave a speech in regards to a possible trade deal with Cotland.
"We shall not trade with the likes of Cots. They are part of the tyrant October Alliance which wishes to take control of the world and enforce their tyrant ways on the world. Here, this congress wishes to trade with a agent of this oppression, the Cottish government which aids the puppet master Emperor. I say no do this, why must we bow to them when they murder hundreds in order to further their oppression. I say no. I vote no against this act of appeasement to tyrants." He then sits down. The bill passes 30-10. This was one of his many outbursts against the TOA."
He was a attracting a lot of attention and many believe the TOA would try something to prevent him. He was creating himself a so called hero against tyranny but reality he was becoming a problem in the side of the Alaskan government.

International broadcasts were just one of a thousand ways of collecting intelligence through signals. Microwaves bounced all around the Earth's atmosphere in predictable, line-of-sight paths carrying the overwhelming majority of communications. While many of these were encrypted they were done so in such a way that any cryptanalysis branch of any intelligence agency could crack them. Only a small percent, perhaps under one whole percent, were encrypted so heavily that code breakers actually spent time and effort trying to crack them. These were mostly government transmissions between embassies, public servants, military leaders, bases, and so on and so fourth. Laser communication, when used, was fast and difficult to intercept but still not completely foolproof. So much could be learned simply by "listening" into the phone calls of another, which was where most governments, the Empire especially, got the bulk of their intelligence. Old fashioned spy work still existed but in far fewer numbers then, perhaps, three decades earlier.
It was precisely this reason that the Empire had an extensive intelligence gathering operation based on signals intelligence (SIGINT) and electronic intelligence (ELINT). Classified, top-secret aircraft orbited the Earth collecting signals on their way to satellites, analyzing them midair and beaming that information through encrypted channels to stations on the ground. Satellite stations and orbiting satellites listened just as well, all hunting for pieces to a gigantic puzzle. Every time a piece was found it was analyzed, reanalyzed, and put through scrutiny so intense that many considered it unnecessary. It was necessary though. In order to weed out the billions of transmissions that weren't important, a signal had to go through rigorous testing. An analyst in an underground facility had to be able to tell the difference between a conversation about dogs and cats and a conversation using dogs and cats as secret words.
The Empire's intelligence agency was like any other in the world except that its budget was probably far higher than elsewhere in the world. Every resource, whether it were satellites, aircraft, submarines, listening ships, etc. was available to the SIGINT and ELINT branches of the Ministry of Intelligence and these branches served to be some of the most secretive of all of them. They were the ears to the Empire as its spies were its eyes.
It came then as a shock and a surprise when a broadcast of a fiery Alaskan senator named Mikhail Konovalev floated into the screens of a Layartebian analyst. "We shall not trade with the likes of Cots." He began as the analyst watched, making sure to jot down notes from the recording. "They are part of the tyrannical October Alliance which wishes to take control of the world and enforce their tyrannical ways on the world. Here, this Congress, wishes to trade with an agent of this oppression, the Cottish government, which aids the puppet master Emperor. I say no do this! Why must we bow to them when they murder hundreds in order to further their oppression. I say no. I vote no against this act of appeasement to these tyrants." The bill would go on to pass thirty votes to ten, a good margin. The fiery and genuine display of disgust and hatred against the Cottish and the October Alliance was nothing new to any analyst from the Empire and neither was the denouncement of the Emperor as being the puppet master of said alliance, regardless of the fact that all members within the alliance had an equal say and there was no appointed "leader." It was merely propaganda, the likes of which the Russians, the Nerotikans, the Pantheaas, the Japanese, and many others had displayed throughout the years. The truth of the matter was that the Empire and the October Alliance were a force in the world to be reckoned with and any state that fought them often found themselves on the losing side. Envy would always rear its ugly head.
Nations under the October Alliance included the Empire, the Realm of Cotland, the Commonwealth of Hirgizstan, the Eurasians, and the Hawdawgians, previous members being the North Germanian Reich and the Soviet Blocian state, both of which had dissipated into the winds of time. All nations underneath the OA charter were given a mutual defense agreement but there was more that included a cultural exchange, free trade, and more benefits than simply military in nature. Despite the agreement of the Senate to trade with the Cottish, the outburst of Senator Konovalev was something unthought of in the Alaskan government, which had recently taken an order of F-55A Shooting Star II fighters from the Layartebian Defense Corporation in a multibillion dollar export deal, which had been narrowly approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Regardless, the Empire would continue relations with the Alaskan government but extra care and caution would be paid to its internal workings.
The election was nearing, with Ericsson and Konovalev as the top candidates. Today, something changed the path of the election. It started with a arrest of a foreigner and then became something different. A Layartebian citizen was arrested at a restricted area and was discovered with a camera, this came out with a trial and a conviction of spying. The polls were a shock with the senator leading by 5%. The day of the election, the Alaskans choose the honorable senator from Nome, Mikhail Konovalev. The victory was a surprise, many observers stated the arrest of the spy boosted Konovalev chances. Now, Alaska had a very, conversational leader. Layartebians with the rest of the TOA has a new opponent.

The arrest and subsequent kangaroo court put an innocent Layartebian citizen in jail for a crime he didn't commit. Despite the attempts by the Layartebian legal counsel appointed to him by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Layartebian embassy in Juneau, the court found Mr. Anthony Cortes, a Cuban by birth of espionage. The truth of the matter was that Anthony was a freelance photographer who had an obsession with military hardware. He had previous brushes in Cuba trying to take pictures outside of one of the various Layartebian military installations but his film was confiscated and he was let loose as he posed little to no threat. Unfortunately, in Alaska, it was a different story. Accused of being a Layartebian spy, his trial and subsequent conviction launched the country into a fear-driven tirade, ultimately ending with the election of Senator Konovalev as the new President. Hateful of the Empire, it was now only a matter of time before the Republic of Alaska became overtly hostile to the Empire.
Juneau, Alaska
The now leaving President Balto Ericsson gave a farewell speech which told the people the cool hard truth.
"Today, Alaska was stabbed in the back. A man with no connections to espionage was arrested for a crime, I believe he had nothing to do with. My last thing is to pardon Mr. Anthony Cortes, and warn that the nation has fallen into a dark time where a loony has seized power and will use it to enforce his ideas. I gave a good term, and now we are doomed. Stupidly has overrun logic, and now we have a man with a crazed idea that the TOA is plotting against this nation. Remember, that we have only four years to live with it."
The short speech condemned the new President and told them the truth. Impeachment wasn't a opinion since he had no part in arrest. Now, Alaska was now a passenger on a trip into a madman's mind.
The election of the person that had so fiercely opposed the Cottish trade deal to the office of President of Alaska didn't sit particularly well with the Cottish Government. In the Foreign Ministry, a statement was being prepared regarding the election, and in the Defense Ministry, the plans for war against Alaska (the Cottish military, like any competent military, had contingiency plans pre-prepared to handle any eventuality, including armed conflict with every country on Earth) were being pulled out from the archives and updated. While Cotland had fewer military capabilities now than it used to have just ten years ago, it was still more than capable of conducting operations far from its shores. Perhaps it was time for a show of muscles.
The Realm of Cotland recognize the lawful election of Mikhail Konovalev as the president elect of the Republic of Alaska, as duly elected by the people of Alaska. As far as the Realm has been informed, the election was carried out in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Alaska and there was no reported instances of fraud in the election process.
With this said, the Realm regrets the election of Mr Konovalev and fears that this choice made by the people of Alaska will come back to haunt them in the years to come, as Mr Konovalev has shown himself to display a less than rational logic concerning foreign policy.
Furthermore, the Realm strongly condemns the unwarranted arrest and subsequent mock trial of Mr. Anthony Cortez. There has been presented no proof that Mr. Cortez has any affiliation with the Empire of Layarteb, nor has there been presented any proof that Mr. Cortez has had any intention of spying against Alaska. Therefore, the Realm considers the actions taken by the Alaskan government to be completely unwarranted and part of a sham created by certain members of the Alaskan government in order to ensure the election of Mr. Konovalev.
It is a shame that Mr. Konovalev has no qualms with exploiting innocent people whenever it suits his needs, and the Realm looks with regret at what is to come in the next four years of the Konovalev administration. We hope the Alaskan people will not suffer undue hardships because of the actions of one person.
- The Realm of Cotland
Twelve hours later, a flight of B-1B Lancer strategic bombers from 138. Squadron (Bomber Command, Royal Cottish Air Force) took off from Arkhangelsk Air Station and headed north on what was reported to be a normal strategic deterrence patrol, as had been carried out by the Realm of Cotland for the past forty years and that was in complete accordance with the Protection of the Realm Act of 1986.
The Lancers refuelled over the Arctic ice cap before they headed down towards the Bering Sea, moving very close to the Alaskan peninsula. The two Lancers flew no closer than but no further away than one nautical mile off the border that marked the divide between Alaskan airspace and territorial waters and international airspace and waters. Continuing on a paralell course down the entire length of the border at high subsonic speeds in order to conserve fuel, the Lancers just waited for the Alaskans to send up someone to identify and escort them.
Regardless of what the Alaskans did, the Lancers would continue down to a point south of the Aleutian Islands where they would conduct some mock cruise missile launch exercises before heading back up the Bering Sea, again moving exactly one nautical mile outside the Alaskan airspace, before they would meet up with a Layartebian KC-26E Condor heavy tanker that would refill their fuel tanks before the Lancers would return to Arkhangelsk Air Station, completing the trip that would last a total of nineteen hours and include two aerial refuellings. A demanding trip, but one that would be carried out daily for the forseeable future. Every single day, anywhere from two to a maximum of twelve Lancers or B-22 Zeus heavy strategic bombers from 144. Squadron (Bomber Command, Royal Cottish Air Force) would carry out strategic patrols down the Alaskan border and train on various acts of aggression.
Furthermore, Cottish submarines from the 8. Submarine Flotilla would from time to time make their presence known by surfacing within sight of Alaskan ships in international waters but close to the Alaskan territorial waters, or by suddenly starting to harrass Alaskan warships in international waters by suddenly pinging them with active sonar before disappearing again.
The general idea behind these strategic patrols and submarine harrassment was for the Alaskans to understand that if Cotland really wanted to, it had the ability to cause serious havoc in and around Alaska. The hope was that Konovalev, upon being briefed about this from the Alaskan military, would understand the message and tone down his rethorics.

The addition of the Cottish to the Alaskan matter was to be expected. The Alaskans had directly provoked, in essence, the Cottish warrior ethos and, in no short order, that of the Empire as well. With Cottish bombers now actively flying past Alaskan airspace to conduct war game exercises in the northern Pacific Ocean, tensions would undoubtedly rise. Naturally, Layartebian assistance in the matter by the way of aerial refueling tankers would further complicate the issue, so to speak. Although the Empire was not actively engaging in any sort of "saber rattling" against the Alaskans, passive support in the use of tankers and reconnaissance equipment could provide a strong case that the Empire was just as much of a threat as the Cottish were, perceived or not.
Imperial Layartebian Air Force KC-26E Condor tankers were pledged to help the Cottish. The Empire had pledged more than that to their October Alliance brothers but, for now, it would stand to be that only aerial refueling would be necessary. As the Cottish conducted their exercises, the Empire brought another aspect to the matter in the way of surveillance. Floating into position at speeds below tactical silent, a Layartebian Virginia Flight II class submarine moved just outside of the marker for Alaskan territorial waters.
The Flight II upgrade of the Virginia was highly classified and completely secret. Though it was known that the Empire possessed and used the Virginia class, to what capacity was unknown. The Flight II upgrade of the Virginia was an advancement to the submarine based on advances in the highly classified and now retired Seawolf Flight III class. The upgrade list included an additional countermeasures launcher on the submarine's hidden underside, an increase in length from 377 to 425 feet further increasing both the displacement and draft of the vessel. It's power output was upgraded with the addition of a pebble bed reactor, much quieter and safer than the pressurized water variant already on the Virginia. This also increased it's speed and diving depths. Other upgrades included an additional four vertical launch tubes and six, external torpedo tubes, not unlike those used on the Akula II class vessels. Despite the obvious differences in size and the cosmetic changes, the true capacity of the Virginia Flight II was not known beyond the inner circles of the navy.
It was because of this that it lurked through the oceans of the world unnoticed. Now it moved into position outside Alaskan territorial waters below a speed of 8 knots, twenty being tactically silent and at a depth of 900 feet, well below the thermal layer. Anything on the surface would have a very hard time detecting it as it moved into place. Once there, it slowly and smartly rose to just one hundred and fifty feet, maintaining 3 knots. Even at this shallow depth, the submarine would have to be "run over" to be detected by any passive means. Once set, the submarine floated a surveillance buoy that was small, barely breaking the surface of the water. Colored to match the water and disguised like a piece of driftwood, it simply floated along with the waves, a small series of antennas on it capable of listening and gathering operations. This addition was a new feature to Layartebian submarines. Previously, they would have to rise to periscope depth to conduct reconnaissance but with this, they would be safer below the waves but still shallow enough to launch any of their weapons.
Still there remained a single factor that make the Alaskans a capable foe. They possessed the F-55 Shooting Star II, a 5.5 generation fighter that enhanced the capabilities of the already deadly F-22 Raptor. The Cottish would have a formidible foe in this fighter.

The newly elected leader of the Alaskan Republic sits in his new office. The Cots and their puppet master waited outside of borders of Alaska. He was plotting his next act. He had four years in office, to the fact that he wasn't going to get re-elected. He decided to place the Air National Guard on alert, and 457th Fighter Wing with its F-55 Shooting Star IIs. The navy at Dutch Harbor was place on alert. Members of the military were wonder if they could get rid of this madman. The election was sham and the so-call spy was on a plane back home. Konovalev wasn't aware that his own government was plotting against him. First, they needed a event to put in works the plan, that was to be later. Konovalev wanted to align himself with the Spizanians, as he saw them as a ally.
To: The Government of Spizania
From: The Republic of Alaska
Dear Sir or Madam,
I wish to inform you to attend a meeting between the Republic and your nation. We are both against the TOA threat and I wish to create a united front against this threat. The choice of the meeting is up to you and I hope to see a representative of your government soon.
Signed,
Mikhail Konovalev
President of the Republic of Alaska

A fast attack boat squadron was waiting. Their mission was to monitor foreign activity in the area. The patrol will take them from Nunivak to a location near the coast of Nome, where they would wait for further orders. Many other naval units were taking their positions. All ANG and air force assets were on standby alert. The conflict was heating up and many officers were getting annoyed with the fool. Some officers welcomed him and these men became the leaders of this operation to protect the country from the tyrant threat. Many people believed that Mikhail might drive this country to war.

The capitol was different than from the Ericsson administration. Troops were around the city preparing for the so call war. The war was to never happen; officers of the military were meeting to solve the problem. At a saloon in the center of the city, a meeting of a group of officers began. These officers were plotting a possible coup against the President.
“The man has gone mad with this anti-TOA stuff. We never mad a problem with the TOA until now.” One officer spoke
“I can understand the problems must be done to stop it.” The leader of the group replied
The 5 men discussed the plan, two groups became a ally against the corrupt Konovalev government was the FIA and FSB, the intelligence services of Alaska.
Shadow Moses Island, Alaska
The bunker was alive with a sense of urgency. Konovalev had cause a hornet’s nest with TOA forces in the Bering Sea and around Alaska. FIA was one of the government forces still on the side of the people. Konovalev was becoming a more and more a threat to his own country. Now the loyal elements of the military and FIA join to stop Konovalev before he endangered the nation. A message was sent to Gen. Jacob Francis, the former Chief of Staff, Stating the following.
“Began Plan, wait for light”
Juneau, Alaska
Mikhail sits on his office, not aware of the plans against him. He was planning this war against the TOA. He had got rid of the officers that didn’t support his grand plans and replaced them with his supporters. The Congress was furious with his constant changes; they were part of the plot against him. The last important force was the Federal Police who would carry out the most important part of plan.
“Good, we are prepared to fight. Now we need the Spizanian support to conduct the this plan for our fight against the tyrants.” He said with a smile, again not aware of the plot against him. Now he moves his forces in place for the final battle, so he thinks.

Members of the 1st Light Infantry Regiment advance on a radio tower which serves as the broadcast center for one of Alaska’s largest news services. The Coyotes as the 1st Regiment is known as were part of the Loyalist elements of the Army. Loyalists were the ones that backed the people and the nation, not the loony of a President. They waited for the order to seize the tower and broadcast the speech to the nation.
Juneau, Alaska
The 1st LIR was in place for the operation. The order was to come in soon to seize the station and broadcast the message. The plotters made sure all the units in the city were loyalists, except for a Konovalev militia that would be needed to be removed from the area of the Presidential manor. The Federal Police was tasked with removing Konovalev from office. The plan was for them to storm the manor with a element from 2nd LIR and arrest Konovalev and his supporters. The naval units in the area were to engage any pro-K forces in the area, and support the coup. The stage set for the mission and now a message came to the units.
The light is green and traffic will not move.
Godspeed
The message was the order. Lt. Robbins and his men stormed the station. The men reached the broadcast center.
“What is going on here.” The station manger yelled
“We are seizing the station to broadcast a message for the security of Alaska. We have orders.” The lieutenant replied
“Ok.” The man didn’t want to tick off the nice men with guns
Robbins reached the controls and inserted a tape. The message was broadcast to Alaska and the world. The man was the Vice President Robert Fullerton, the leader of the coup.
“Alaskans and the world,
Today, we take back our nation from a man would lost all sanity and wishes to pulls us into a war that we don’t wish to take part in. Right now loyal members of the government and the military are liberating the capitol. The tyrant has supporters that wish to aid in bringing this war. We ask that the citizens aid the fighting against Konovalev. This is what we most do to save our nation from a war that will have no positive outlook. I ask resist the tyrant and fight for a real leader not a crazed tyrant, Godspeed and good luck.”
The message was heard and the citizen prepared to fight. The Federal Police and the 2nd LIR arrived at the manor to find Konovalev missing. The former leader had left the capitol and now is on the run from his countrymen. The forces loyal to K were preparing to fight. The so called war against tyranny just became a civil war between the forces. The Konovalev and the Loyalists began to fight this war. Konovalev had issued a message of his own from his hiding spot.
“The tyrants have turned our countrymen against us. We must fight against this so-called neutrality. We will never submit to the false ideas of neutrality, we must fight everyone that does not submit to our glory, Death to the tyrants and the failure that is freedom and neutrality.”
The man had lost what little sanity he had, and become a deranged lunatic running from justice. Fullerton was named President and took command of the Federal Armed Forces of Alaska, and declared one goal. The arrest and trail of Mikhail Konovalev for his crimes and the staging of the unlawful arrest of Mr. Castro who a victim of a act done by Konovalev's supporters in the government to allow him to seize office. Now the Alaskans had to fix the mess themselves.
Bering Sea, Alaska
The 4th Fast Attack Squadron was on patrol, they were tasked with locating a Konovalev unit in the area. The unit was a OPV squadron with the Type 13. The 4th were equipped with Wolf class FACs, the Wolf class was armed with 75mm gun and 8 Harpons in quad launchers. The Type 13s had a 57mm gun and 8 Harpoons in two quad launchers. The 4th had the advantage of surprise, due to the fact that the Konovalev forces had no central command yet. PC-56, the Balto was the first to spot the 13s.
"There's the bastards, Wolves lets go hunting."
The FACs fired the their missiles and readied their 75s incased the missiles failed.
The 13s radar detected the missiles, and vessels tried to avoid but 3 ships were lost. They fired back and two ships were lost on the 4th. The vessels began fighting as the first shots of the war were fired.

It was difficult enough that the Alaskan situation was shrouded with mystery. Then it got stranger when the Alaskans began broadcasting anti-Konovalev messages and even more unusual when they began shooting at each other in the Bering Sea. Tensions in the region were high with the Cottish and the Empire both in close proximity, trying to surmise just what the intentions of the Alaskan state really were.
When the broadcasts began and filtered into the speakers and across the screens of analysts in the Ministry of Intelligence, most of the analysts figured that some sort of civil war or power struggle had broken out amongst the top officials of the Alaskan government. "Alaskans and the world. Today, we take back our nation from a man who lost all sanity and wishes to pull us into a war that we don't wish to take part in. Right now, loyal members of the government, and the military, are liberating the capital. The tyrant has supporters that wish to aide in bringing this war. We ask that the citizens aide the fighting against Konovalev. This is what we must do to save our nation from a war that will have no positive outlook. I ask, resist the tyrant, and fight for a real leader, not a crazed tyrant, Godspeed and good luck." The message was shrouded in complete and utter shock. The Ministry of Intelligence knew that Konovalev was not a popular person amongst the military or the government, many believing that he only got elected out of the fear of the people. When the kangaroo court sentenced Anthony Cortes, a Layartebian citizen, people took to the streets in agonizing happiness. Afraid that the Empire was infiltrating their country, trying to establish some sort of puppet state, they turned to a leader they didn't fully understand. Konovalev used that fear and uncertainty and now pushed the Alaskan state towards a highly hostile state of affairs with two of the world's most powerful militaries.
Now that something different was going on, broadcasts went out to Layartebian vessels and aircraft near the Alaskan state and their territorial claims. It was simple, "Alaska in possible state of civil war. Avoid contact with all Alaskan vessels and craft as previously. Do not engage unless directly taking fire from these vessels or craft. They remain hostile but their intetions are, for the moment, unclear."
Northwestern Alaska
Konovalev was hiding somewhere in the Arctic Northwest. This became his hide out to command what forces he had. The loyal elements he had were scattered across the nation. He consulted with his followers and decided to get foreign aid. A short message was composed to be send to the nation he could trust to aid him.
To: The Government of Spizania
I request aid in the fight to return to power. I need what support you are able to give.
The short message was intercepted by the Alaskan government and what other forces in the area.

The Alaskan Federal Military was preparing to locate and arrest Konovalev. The only forces backing Konovalev were anti-TOA citizens and a National Guard regiment. The 1st LIR which was key in the beginning of the coup against him was tasked with the rest of the Northern District to find him. The Navy was returning to port since the OPV squadron was the only pro-Konovalev naval asset. The Air Force was surprising not affected and the entire service was backing the government. A-10s from Eielson AFB were on standby incase they were needed. Fullerton was ready to fight the war, but if Konovalev manged to get the foreign support it would be a harder fight then expected.
Northwestern Alaska
The 1st LIR and rest of NORDIST was on the hunt for him. The regiment nor any militias were encountered yet. It was believed the NG unit was with Konovalev and the militias were scattered across the area. Sgt. Faulkner's discovered a militia controlled checkpoint with three guards, but reinforcements were unknown. The checkpoint had a radio which needed to be taken out before they could radio what other militias that were in the area. Pvt. Forrester readied his M203 and aimed it at the radio shack while the rest of the squad got into position. Faulkner gave the order and Forrester fired, the 40mm HELLHOUND round flew through the air and destroyed itself in the shack. The men rushed the checkpoint taken out the rest of the men. He entered a nearby building which operated as a HQ for the area. They discovered a map with the location of Konovalev's hideouts, with circled. They believed it to be his possible location currently, there was a chance he moved from it or was the the process of moving.
"Command, we have a possible location for the objective." Faulkner radioed
"Roger, you have permission to engage the area and take the objective into custody. "
The men moved, the location was 5 miles from their current location. They decided to walk since they had no transportation currently.
North of Selawik, Alaska
Konovalev was sitting in his hideout. The government forces were nearing, and he prepared to hold out. His only hope was support from the foreign ally. He had enough supplies for two weeks. The NG regiment was ready to battle the government with the militia units in support. Now he waits the response from the Spizanian government and for the eventual battle.

Aboard the Missile Attack Submarine CSS Montrose Castle
The Gold Alert teleprinter finished typing the last few characters of teh dispatch and shut down, the orders it had just transmitted to the submarine were simple, give Kornavelov whatever aid was practical, using whatever means neccesary. Which in the first instance meant disposing of Alaskas small navy, but the Montrose Castle was one of only two Castle-class submarines in the entire Northern Pacific, and it would take days before the submarine squadron now being scrambled from Peurto Princessa and Baker Island Station arrived in the area, so he would just have to do as much damage as possible with his extremely limited supply of ordnance.
"Conn, Sonar, didnt you get a suspected Type 212 on the sonar a few minutes ago on bearing 149 relative?"
"Sonar, Conn, Aye Captain, it faded out, sounded like a 212 snorkelling"
"Very Well, Conn, Helm, Heading 149 relative, Ahead Tactical"
The submarine turned from its new heading and descended back to standard patrol depth, moving at 3 knots, its liquid metal reactor operating on natural circulation alone, feeding enough power to maintain full sensors and that modest speed as the boat crept silently towards its new prey

The situation in Alaska went from bad to worse fast. The Alaskans were now in a civil war it seemed with those loyal to Konovalev and his anti-TOA rhetoric fighting against his opposition, which seemed to be, possibly, the upper echelon of the military and government. It was tough to piece everything together so quickly and there were gaps in what was received and what was really transmitted. Satellites were moving out of the area and those that were coming in would leave a gap of an hour or more of coverage. Orbiting aircraft in international airspace around Alaska could only receive so much because of their significantly lower altitude. They would do their best to observse and listen while the satellites transferred around the globe, orbiting over the Earth at high speed and low orbit altitudes, giving them excellent views of the ground below.

The 1st LIR was nearing the former leaders location. Unknown of the defenses, they asked for a overview of the area. Satellite recon showed defenses around a building complex. Now to see if he was there, the task was given to Rainbow 1-1, a RC-135W from Shemya Island. The aircraft was scan the area for radio traffic then discover it's location. There was a lot of radio traffic from the complex and a regiment sized force. Those two pieces of recon identified the complex as the hideout for him.

The sonarman pushed a button and a distinctive drone filled the control room as the four engines of the P3C sent noise through the air and translated it into the calm northern Pacific.
"Have they detected us?"
"Probably sir, that low they would have got us on MAD, even with the titanium hull, I recommend we continue as we are for now, and load some Subsurface to air Missiles into tubes 1 and 2"

With the war in Alaska over and the renegade government defeated, it was a breath of relief for the Empire, who risked being brought into the war should anything happen to Cottish equipment near the Alaskan territory. With everything subsiding now, the Empire scaled back its alert status and resumed normal activities. Where the Alaskans would go from there was something of an unknown to the analysts in the Ministry of Intelligence but time would tell.
With the fighting over and Konovalev imprisoned on charges of treason, the Cots decided it was time to put an end to the daily flights to Alaska. Thirty-six days after the first flights started, on the same day that the news of Konovalev's arrest was learned and subsequently confirmed by Cottish intelligence sources inside Alaska, there were no Cottish B-1B Lancers to be detected in the skies near Alaska.
The Cottish had concluded what had been known in the Air Force as Operasjon: Arktisk Tåke, which had seen Cottish B-1Bs log almost 12 300 flight hours, expend millions of litres of jet fuel, and an unprecedented amount of realistic training for the pilots of the B-1B force. Of course, the extraordinary amount of usage had placed great stress on the aircraft, meaning that now with the conclusion of Arktisk Tåke they would receive much needed maintenance. As for the pilots, they were awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for their outstanding conduct in the operation and given a two week leave to allow them to catch up with the time they had spent away from their families in the past month's time.
