OOC: As I said in the title as long as your reply is OOC and not IC feel free to respond.
The convoy pulled up into the front of the simple looking bunker with some small offices branching off of it. They had just gotten through the heavily guarded checkpoint at the front gates that were a good mile away from the facility itself.
The door on the driver's side of the black SUV at the front of the convoy opened up and a man in a black leather jacket, black sunglasses, black dress pants and shoes stepped out and walked around to the other side of the convoy facing the bunker. He opened backseat door to a silver SUV in the middle of the convoy and out stepped Prince Martin Leichstur II.
At the entrance to the bunker stood two scientists in their stereotypical attire and a pair of armed guards.
"Good afternoon, my Führer. I am Dr. Metz and this is Dr. Lincoln, my assistant. I trust your ride was pleasant?", asked one of the scientists as he and his assistant bowed respectfully to the Prince as he approached followed by his own entourage of guards.
"I would only enjoy coming out here if good news were awaiting me. I trust that this is the case?", he asked a little irritably.
"Oh yes! Have no worry my Führer we have a breakthrough that will no doubt make your trip worthwhile.", he said with a few excited nods as he turned towards the guards and motioned the one closest to the door to enter the code into a keypad lock next to the door. He did so and within a few presses a loud beep and a greenlight above the door signaled the code was correct and the group opened the door, stepping inside the quiet and partially lit bunker.
As the door closed behind them, the slam echoing down the hallway, the group proceeded towards the end which had an elevator at it. The talkative scientist again entered a code and pressed an up arrow on the pad, the elevator rising up to their level shortly after.
The group stepped inside and after around a 15 second ride down the metallic doors slid open after a quick ding to notify them they had finished their ride. The stepped into another corridor akin to the one the had just left except this one branched off to the left and right at the end. They turned to towards the left one and passed through security checkpoint where they were checked for the items on their person.
They then stood at another door which required a keypadded code from the same scientist. When they stepped inside they were in a massive room that resembled mission control at NASA with the side opposite the door occupied by a massive screen that was constantly refreshed every few seconds by satellite images of the world. with some statistics and data at the lower corners of the screen.
"So..what exactly am I funding again? Explain to me what this weapon does...", asked Martin with some impatience and curiosity.
"Well, my Führer, as you know the project is know as code name "HPFAR", High Power Frequency Auroral Research. What we have is the world's most powerful shortwave transmitter. It is designed to beam high-energy radio waves into the ionosphere. The array consists of one hundred and eighty antenna towers, which are housed in underground silos when not active, on a grid of fifteen columns and twelve rows on a gravel pad of some thirty acres. Each tower consists of a pair of dipole antennas that run either in the 2.8-to-7 MHz, or the 7-to-10 MHz range. Each transmitter can generate some ten thousand watts of radio-frequency power, and the combined raw output of the three hundred and sixty transmitters is thus three point six million watts. When focused on a single point in the sky, this is effectively multiplied a thousandfold to three point six billion watts."
"What exactly does this thing do, is what I meant...", he said rather irritably having listened to all that science talk and not received an answer he liked.
"Yes. My apologies, my Führer. There are several things we've learned along the way. Research has been primarily in four areas: communications, such as extremely low frequency waves, or ELF, for such things as contacting submarines in the depths; tomography which is the ability to see great distances underground, and even the possibility of some rudimentary weather control. There have also been some experiments with pulse generation, EMP, to knock out enemy missile guidance systems and that sort of thing. And as a byproduct of the ELF research, the possibility of affecting and altering biorhythms of plant and animal life have been explored."
"What was that last part?", asked Martin with genuine curiosity.
"We've known for a long time that long-term radio-wave exposure can affect people. Increased rates of cancer under power lines and the like. Civilized people live in a virtual bath of non-ionizing low-frequency waves. Everything electrical produces them. At HPFAR, certain areas of research involving the 0.5-to-40Hz frequencies, the same ones the human brain uses, have been experimented with. The Earth is essentially a giant magnet, surrounded by incoming cosmic and solar radiation. A certain number of these solar winds spiral in and down at the magnetic poles, in what is known as the electrojet. This is what causes the aurora, the northern and southern lights. With HPFAR, we can, in effect, turn the length of the electrojet into a kind of antenna, and by certain electronic manipulations, make it as long as we want, within limits, of course."
"So, using these frequencies and this electrojet, we can target almost anywhere in the world?", asked Martin as he glanced at the satellite image of the world briefly.
"This is correct, my Führer.", answered the scientist with a bow of his head.
"I see...have we done any...experiments on a large scale using this?", he asked with a smirk that showed he was scheming up something.
"Not yet, my Führer. We've yet to apply to your office for permission and...", he was cut off before he could continue by Martin. "Permission granted. You have my approval to test this idea anywhere and at anytime as long as i'm notified when the test begins, when it ends, and the results."
"Absolutely, my Führer. We'll keep you posted if and when we make the test."
"Good job. You can expect some more funding for the project coming your way soon.", he said with a smile which made the scientist smile back excitedly and bow his head in thanks.
Without another word, he and his guards made their way back up to the surface....
OOC: For those of you who have read the book, this idea comes from the book "Tom Clancy's Net Force: Breaking Point" which in turn took the idea from the HAARP real life project. In no way shape or form do I claim ownership to this idea and the real project and would like to thank Tom Clancy for creating such a great idea that made the book very interesting to read.
