Coup and Capitulation in Unkerlantum
Hostages taken but few deaths

KUZOV, Unkerlantum- After decades of economic and political decline, the government of the Republic of Unkerlantum has capitulated. A temporary provisional government has been set in place until a new form of rule can be established.

The collapse comes as no surprise to a population that has languished under inefficient, corrupt leadership for nearly forty years. A gaping trade deficit, severe inflation, and unemployment rates at their highest since before the 1950 War culminated in massive riots last Thursday. Then today, at approximately 9:00 AM, key Unker officials, including President Votol Zubin, were taken hostage all throughout the country by teams of ethnic Traxans and Unkers. The Traxans are a minority race whose lands were conquered by the ancient Kingdom of Unker in the 12th century and have long been oppressed since. Given the long history of enmity between the two races, government officials were baffled to see them cooperating.

There have been few reports of any actual violence taking place during the apparent coup, with the exception of one rural town on the eastern border, where Unker civilians assaulted the local courtroom where the mayor and other minor officials were being held. The attack was staved off with severe casualties on both sides. The military has remained inexplicably silent, perhaps paralyzed with confusion at no clear indication of whom to report to.

New Faces in Unkerlantum
Skeptics…skeptical

KUZOV, Unkerlantum- In sweeping moves that come just days after a total governmental collapse, the political makeup of Unkerlantum has been completely rebuilt, though not necessarily from scratch.

Nearly all governmental figures holding office prior to the August 6th coup have been replaced. The only ones to escape being supplanted were minor officials, ranging from rural small-town mayors to postal officials. Those who were unseated are to be replaced by appointed individuals, most of whom played roles of varying importance in the provisional government or in the coup itself.

More changes are on their way, hinted Konstantin Zimonov, who is to be Unkerlantum’s first prime minister, sharing the position of head of the executive branch with president Alexander Karakov. “Out with the old, in with the new, as they say.”

Opponents of the coup (the term “revolution” has been vehemently denied by the new leadership) criticized the changes as being superficial. “What makes them different from the last set of bastards?” asked one protester outside the Council Chamber, the Unkerlantum legislative seat of government. “You ask me, it’s just the same shit, different assholes.”

Unkerlantum Renamed
Successor state named “Travda”

KUZOV, Unkerlantum- Soon to be replaced as KOLITKA, Travda. Today the new government which four days ago replaced the government of the Republic of Unkerlantum declared itself a new sovereign nation, the Federation of Travda. The name is alleged to mean “Truth” in one of the ancient tongues of the continent’s history, which died out long before the Traxan and Unker languages came into being. “The name is neutral,” said Alexander Karakov, the newly elected Travdan president. “It shows favoritism to neither culture, wiping the nation off and starting over with a clean slate, which is what we’re all about.”

The nation, the capital, as well as several other major cities are expected to undergo name changes, the exact names to be determined by city referendum.

The newly formed Federation, having successfully established a new governing body, and having reached the noteworthy population of over one billion people, feels it appropriate to now approach the international community for recognition of sovereignty as an independent state.

As a sign of good faith and for the purpose of furthering international cooperation, we have taken the liberty of constructing new headquarters for our future foreign delegates. One set is located in our national capital of Kolitka, located at the Houses of Order. The other is in the city of Smalyenka, our “small capital,” at General Avenue.
