The World Soviet Party

The World Soviet Party is a peaceful nation, it just comes naturally to them and thus, it does not excel at war-mongering. However, Soviets tend to be quite stubborn and determined, and they don't cease until they get what they want or need.

Because of this and the dense population, the government had begun looking for new territories long ago, and it just happened that the nearest, least defended nation was the ex-endorsian colony of Muncheria, a communist country that had recently suffered a coup and was now a mix of struggling warlords and factions.

At first, there was no official reaction from The World Soviet Party, but later, after several months had passed and with no one showing up to restore order or any faction gaining the upper hand, the Armed Forces started considering the possibility of an invasion. A plan was quickly drawn up and presented to the High Command, which approved it almost immediately and began preparing several divisions for the new combat zone.

Not only would this be the first hostile action STARTED by the Soviets in over five years, but it would also allow the Soviet Army and Air Service a good chance to show that the increased spending it had gotten as of late had gone to a good cause, there were lots of goodies that had been purchased with the funding-boost and High Command was eager to try them in a real combat situation.

By noon of that same day, the 4th Division was on it's way to the assembly points near the border, where they would be rapidly briefed and then, finally, deployed to Muncheria in what High Command considered to be a sound and quite simple strategy.

This time, going over Soviet doctrine, the tank "rush", as it could be described, would not be preceded by a large artillery barrage, instead, they would try and breakthrough the light Muncherian defenses, penetrating hard and deeply into enemy territory.

However, before that, the Army needed to perform some reconnaissance of the border and in order to do that, several F/A-77A Kovas "Havenfighters" were diverted from their patrol routes and into enemy territory. Their job was to mark positions were heavy defense could be expected and thus allow the Army to neutralize them.
The World Soviet Party
20-08-2008, 00:24
The Havenfighters were fast to go in and out, but for no reason, as the evidence suggested that the Muncherians had absolutely no forces posted on the border. Photos only showed endless kilometers of forests, interrupted by a camp every now and then, High Command theorized that they belonged to irregular militias, hardly any threat to an armoured force.

However, there were still some problems to resolve, the first one being the lack of roads and proper infrastructure to move and support said armoured force, something which would prove quite difficult in a forest as big and dense as the "Endless Forest". An unanimous decision was reached on this subject, and this time, several flights of A-127A "Marauders" took off their air bases in Soviet territory, escorted by "Havenfighters" and armed with an assortment of napalm and cluster bombs, both capable of rapidly and effectively clearing a forest and, of course, anyone in it.

Just in case, an extra squadron of "Marauders" was diverted to the approximate locations of the irregular encampments, with orders to terminate them with extreme prejudice, again escorted by the Kovas.

ooc: OSHIT, A POST!

IC:
Muncheria, the land of promise and wealth. Everyone had seen the old posters advertizing the claim, and for a while there had been a rush to fill the territory. Then, everyone realized that there was no gold, and the population boom turned into a fizzle. Millions still resided in Muncheria, the population staying relatively stable over the years. That is, until the revolution. But even after the seemingly endless bloodshed and wanton destruction, life goes on.

=========================================

"Sequoia Muncherium," the teacher scrawled out the name on the board, "commonly known as the Muncherian Redwood, is the largest tree within the sovereign nation of Muncheria, both in height and mass. While its relative Sequoia Sempervirens, or the Coastal Redwood, is common throughout the coastal regions, it is far more commonly found in the deeper forests in the region. These trees have been known to routinely exceed one hundred twenty meters in height and twenty meters in diameter deep in the so-called "Endless Forest" or in Shafer's Backcountry." The teacher glanced up at the class before her, noting a hand towards the back of the crumbling room. "What's your question, Comrade Ciampi?"

"Have you ever seen such a Muncherian Redwood, Instructor?"

"No. The only ones who go into the deep backcountry are prospectors and scientists. The militias make it too dangerous. Now, a primary canopy starting at around one hundred meters has interesting results for the flora and fauna of the region. Please turn to page three hundred nineteen and follow along...."

=========================================

One hundred meters.... Silvio Ciampi tried not to look down at the drop. It was only a few meters to the tree's lowest branch, and a very welcome rest. Stealing one brief glance behind, Ciampi could see the belayer far below, motioning him upwards. A few awkward moments later, he lay back on the colossal branch, looking about throughout the massive forest.

All the greatest creations of man could hardly imagine the forest that stretched before him. Behemoth trees as far as the eyes could see. Truly this was arboreal perfection, a tree that took two thousand years to reach its full height. Cones the size of basket balls hung about him, hardened to withstand the fall to the ground. It took the greatest of fires to scorch through the bark on these huge beings, and indeed there were some serious fires here. Ciampi pulled out a cigarette, and lighting it, fastened several more ropes to the branch. He and his assistant would ascend to the top by noon, as good a time as any for height measurements.

As he fastened the last rope, however, an earth shattering noise split the air, and one of the great trees began to topple, its base a smoldering ruin. Seconds later, several jets screamed overhead in tight formation just above the canopy. BASTARDS! Another tree began to fall, this one bearing directly towards his branch with astonishing speed. Training kicked in as he hurled himself into space, yanking a small red cord on his jacket.

=========================================

“Yankee-November, you are cleared to land.”

“Roger Nest, we are coming in.” An MD-500 skimmed the trees, swerving into a small clearing. A collection of rusting vehicles sat around the perimeter, and a cluster of fake buildings and tents gave the illusion of a camp. The full encampment was over a hill from this clearing, but this was as close as the chopper could land. The Muncherian Capitalist Army had learned long ago that clearings were perfect targets. As the helicopter began its slow descent to the clearing, several vehicles emerged from the forest's edge, taking up positions around the cleared pad.

The instant the MD-500 touched, however, it disappeared in a colossal explosion. The entire clearing became a firestorm, scorched debris flying everywhere. A few TWSP airplanes flew overhead, peeling off in sequence for another run. Circling around, they lined up for another strike on the now quite barren meadow. Then, the world seemed to open up.

Around a dozen quadruple rapid firing anti-air guns unloaded into the sky, their flaming tongues seeking the fighters overhead. Two short ranged anti-air missiles screamed into the air as well; antiques by most standards, but more than capable of providing “bang” for buck.

At the encampment, hardly a twig moved. Stealth was the key now, as was the hope that the planes would leave.
The World Soviet Party
21-08-2008, 18:34
By the time the AAs opened fire, the "Marauders" and their escorts were almost on top of the clearing and thus some of the planes were damaged but none shot down, even the most modern weaponry the militias had, a couple of old MANPADs, were quickly evaded by the squadron. The primitive yet determined defense was useless. However, the existence of such weaponry, which could very well shoot down an unarmored helicopter or destroy a light land vehicle, was duly noted. Pilots would have to be more careful in the future.

Indeed, reports were pouring in from the front, as squadrons returned and thick, black smoke covered the skies. High Command would have a reason to be happy, and one reason to be unhappy.

Soviet High Command (SOVCOM),

"Sir, reports indicate that all flights have completed their mission without much trouble."

"What do you mean by 'much'?"

"There have been reports of sporadic anti-air fire from some of the irregular militias, nothing to be worried about, as no plane was shot down and only a few were slightly damage, it seems that the Air Service has done it's job again, sir."

"Good, anything else?"

"Yes, our experts estimate the forest will be burning for a further twenty four hours, and that's the most optimistic report, thank god it's raining."

"Indeed, inform divisional headquarters that they must be ready to push forward as soon as the fires die, tell them to keep pushing until they reach Lumberton, capturing it is our top priority."

"Yes, sir."

"Oh, and inform the Staat-Truppen that they must be ready for deployment at all times, no leaves this weekend. We might need them in the near future."

"Aye, sir."
The World Soviet Party
24-08-2008, 07:37
Exactly one day after the attack, most of the fires had died down, and only small patches of the forest remained untouched. This was the perfect opportunity to advance a,d crush everything, right before the Muncherian Army, or it's equivalent, moved into to close the breach. The irregulars did not pose such an important threat, but they would still need to be eliminated, further attack missions were scheduled for the rest of the week.

The first wave was composed, almost entirely, of M20A1A1 "Mackalls" and M1 "Spartan Phalanxes", supported by M4A5 "Spartans" filled to the top with heavily armed infantry. These would exploit the breach as much as they could before night fell, and then a perimeter would be created in order to assess and properly defend, supply and equip whatever gains they made.

In the air, entire squadrons of Marauders and Havenfighters made their way to the interior of Muncheria, aiming to destroy whatever air strips and combat planes they could find. The goal was to achieve total air superiority as soon as possible.

At the same time, squads of Staat-Truppen would be deployed in the middle of the remaining forests, so as to locate and destroy irregular militias in the area. This would give the army a chance to test their elite force in a real combat situation, along with the K28 automatic rifle and the Doomani weapons acquired over the years.

Mondothian 12th Naval Battle Group
"Admiral, the Soviets seem to have advanced over much of the interior, we are clear to begin our assault."
"Thank you ensign. Comms! alert the battle group to begin the assault, I want the islands pacified by the end of the day so we can begin our assault on the mainland by tomorrow."
"Aye sir, signaling the rest of the fleet."

Almost as soon as Muncheria had collapsed, Mondoth had begun assembling a 'peace-keeping' force based around the 12th Naval Battle Group, organizing the task force and intelligence gathering had taken up several months But now, the fleet was in position.

The first wave consisted of Cormorant SEAD aircraft which flew over the outer islands under the watchful eyes of AWACs and Kestrel ASFs to pave the way for more comprehensive air-support for the marine landings that were already preparing for their assault.
Intelligence indicated that only minimal air defenses would be present, but there was no sense in leaving them to ambush later air-support that might be vital to ground forces.

To whom it may concern,

The recent demise of the Muncherian government will probably lead way to rash imperialistic movements into the area to greedily absorb the fallen nation's land into another's borders. Well, as I've heard stated by another person, 'two can play at that game'. Which is why, on this date (24/8/2008), I issue a decree on behalf of the people of the Estonsko Archipelago. The territory so close to those people shall not be taken by another government. If one does not understand my statement, it is as follows:

His Imperial Majesty's Government promises to protect the sovereign nation of Muncheria no matter what the cost. The lands, to be claimed by a belligerent, are too strategically close to the Cohenian bases in the Estonsko Archipelago, making way for a perfect move to destroy the Cohenian way of life. Throughout the ages of Cohenian held Estonsko and even during the state of independence of the Estevakian Kingdom, ethnic Muncherians and No Endorsians have held a sacred trust with us. We have not been attacked by them, and we trust the people not to attack us. To allow another nation to so claim and attack the Muncherians is tyrannical, pure and simple.

His Imperial Majesty's government demands the immediate withdraw and ceasefire of all belligerent nations immediately, or force shall be used. The Estonsko Archipelago is currently preparing to defend the Muncherians at all costs. Pull out now or face the further consequences.

Tsar and Autocrat of the Cohenians

TO: Whoever it may concern, The Grand Empire of Jaredcohenia
FROM: Alexander Nevskij, Minister of Foreign Affairs, The World Soviet Party

In response to your communique, made public earlier today, we have prepared a proper response:

The Socialist States of the World Soviet Party, whose Armed Forces are currently deployed to the area in question to ensure the safety and well-being of it's citizens, foreigners and Muncherians alike, refuses to recognize the Cohenian claim as legitimate. The Soviet government has already started a military deployment to Muncheria and will not recall it.

Furthermore, and while the people of The World Soviet Party hold no grudge or ill-will against the Cohenians, any threat made against them will be responded in kind. We shall not be the ones to start a war, but we are ready to defend ourselves.

Therefore, the government of the World Soviet Party would like to arrange a conference with representatives of the Grand Empire in order to discuss the current situation in Muncheria, as well as peaceful ways of resolving it.

Finally, I would like to add that the Soviet Armed Forces will carry on with their scheduled operations until a decision is reached on the subject.

Duntovostok, Chevrokia

“Mr. President, our focus thus far in the Hjeltland theatre has been on the Concordite colony of Ferrum Lupus, as well as the Doomani forces stationed there, and so far, this seemed an appropriate course of action. However it appears that activity is occurring in and around the rather unstable nation of Muncheria, activity which has not originated from Muncheria itself.”

“Our long range radar stations in southwestern Hjeltland picked up contacts coming from the south and southwest into Muncheria, it is believed they originated in The World Soviet Party. SIGINT and COMINT indicated combat activity by the Soviet aircraft, this has been confirmed by satellite recon from Air Force birds, and interestingly, a few under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Interior. We have no knowledge that the Muncherians made any moves against the Soviets, and in all fairness, we don’t expect that they made any. The Soviets themselves have not made any public statements on the matter as of yet. My assumption is that they most certainly aren’t going in for peacekeeping. Secretary Gregory thinks it may be a landgrab on the part of the Soviets.”

“Not long after this, our command cruiser Syttende Mai, which was operating off the Muncherian coast as part of our anti-slavery operations focusing on the north coast of Granatia, spotted a large battlegroup moving north towards the Muncherian coast, and they were determined to not be allied. Our ships kept their distance for the time, but observed their movements and conducted SIGINT and COMINT activities. They’ve determined the ships do be Mondothian in origin. We had up to this point assumed the Mondothians would focus their attention on attempting to break the Cohenian hold on Estonsko. Given their imperialistic notions towards the Cohenain territories in East Haven, we have reason to believe that Mondoth also wants to grab a slice of Muncheria.”

“Thank you, Secretary Gustav,” said the Chevrokian President, Olav Jagland.

At that moment, the Secretary of State, Peter Gregory, entered the room. “Mr. President, we’ve just got in two communications regarding the Muncherian situation. First one is from the Cohenians, they are moving to halt Soviet and Mondothian activities, and they have given a guarantee of independence for Muncheria. Second one is the Soviet reply, they have no intention of halting their activities, but apparently want to hold a conference with the Cohenians about the peaceful resolution of the Muncherian crisis.”

The Secretary of State handed the President the two messages, and he read over them carefully. After finishing, he laughed briefly. “The Soviets must out of their minds. If you read their message carefully, they’re already claiming sovereignty in Muncheria over the people, and state that they refuse to halt their military activities until a decision is reached on the matter.”

“They clearly want to be in a strategically advantageous position at the end of their operations, Mr. President,” said Secretary of Defense, Harald Gustav.

“How quickly could they do it, Mr. Gustav?”

“It would take a while, Mr. President. The terrain in southwestern Muncheria is really not at all suitable for large scale operations. Very dense forests, mountains, rivers, and so forth. Our intel says what roads that do exist in Muncheria are mostly concentrated along the coastal areas, and even those are difficult to pass due to extensive roadblocks and other fortifications erected by the Muncherians. Railroads have been severed entirely. In the area the Soviets will be operating in for the near future, the infrastructure is quite poor, I can’t imagine they can advance very well just due to these factors alone, nevermind activity from the Muncherians themselves.”

“Well, I think we ought to see if we can slow them down even more,” said the President.

Official Statement from the President
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j118/ChevyRocks/ChevrokianCoatofArms.png

It is sad to hear that crisis yet again looms in East Haven, this time in regards to the troubled nation of Muncheria. Conflict in Muncheria is nothing new, first the Muncherians rebelled against No Endorse, and then they began fighting amongst themselves. Countless thousands have already died in the fighting, but apparently this is not enough for the battered nation. News has come to me that The World Soviet Party has begun bombing targets in southwestern Muncheria, an attack without good reason. The Soviets then claim that they wish to hold a conference for a peaceful resolution to the crisis, after they initiated the attack, and also state they refuse to halt any military operations in Muncheria until a decision is reached.

The Soviet refusal to stop their advance into southwestern Muncheria leads me to believe they have other motives for this attack than to “safeguard the citizens of the area,” as they so claim. It is interesting to hear the Soviets claim they will not start a war, when they have already commenced combat operations in Muncheria. The Soviets have no business with Muncheria, and do not have the right to make decisions on the fate of the Muncherians when they themselves are still in a state of crisis. The Soviet belligerence should not and will not be tolerated. We stand by our allies the Cohenians and recognize that Muncheria is an independent, sovereign nation, and we demand The World Soviet Party immediately cease all military action within Muncheria and remove all forces they currently have in the country.

Official Statement by the Freehold Foreign Affairs Commission
It has no doubt come to the attention of the Havenic nations that following the collapse of the Muncherian Government that Mondothian forces have begun advancing on former Muncherian territory, in fact, we have already received several rather indignant letters of protest regarding it.
However, the people of Haven cannot be ignorant of the Muncherian situation, as a nuclear power, Muncheria's current instability endangers it's people and the safety of the surrounding region, of which Mondoth, Chevrokia, TWSP, and Estonsko have so willingly pointed out their inclusion.
While we would be perfectly willing to attend a conference regarding the long term disposition of former Muncherian territory, I imagine we can all agree that the nuclear threat posed by the instability must be dealt with quickly and as such cannot wait for the decision of such a conference.

While we are interested in attending such a conference, Chevrokian attendence would be based upon the actions of the Soviet military. The previous communique stated that Soviet forces would not halt their operations until a decision is reached on Muncheria.

It must be stated quite firmly that before any Chevrokian delegate is dispatched to such a conference, Soviet forces must cease offensive operations in Muncheria and move back behind the Soviet-Muncherian border.

Through your open communique with the Chevrokians, it seems that a peace conference would be moot. You obviously wish for war to continue, and you obviously are only interested in the imperialistic gains of your own people. The Muncherians have always kept to themselves since declaring independence from the Endorsians, yet your people have decided to destroy their way of life and annex their homelands.

For any peace conference to begin, the Soviets must stand down their militaristic actions in Muncheria and return to the World Soviet Party's official borders. The Grand Empire agree with her allies in the Chevrokian Republic in that no delegate will be sent until the World Soviet Party ceases offensive action in Muncheria and returns to her borders.

The soviets were dissapointed with the response to their communique, even though the Muncherians had yet to respond. For the moment, and as promised, further operations were canceled, and the Engineer Corps set on building roads and infrastructure for both the Soviet Army, Air Service and civilians who would live there when the war ended.

However, they still kept scouts ahead of the main force as well as patrols around the perimeter and regular flights to mantain air superiority and scout the area from above.

The Muncherians had yet to respond to the communique, and the Soviets were getting restless. Not only would this give their opponents enough time to mobilize, but it would allow irregulars a chance to survey the invading forces and take action against them. Fortunately, contact with the militias had been, so far, sporadic, and over 3 encampments had been destroyed by the Staat-Truppen. Still, there were many more out there, and they were a threat that could not be ignored.

For the moment, the extra time was used to build infrastructure and resupply the armoured strike force, bring more planes and ordnance to the front-lines and overall, prepare for a new assault, one that hopefully would reach Lumberton in less than a week.

By now, the Soviets had waited for a Muncherian response for more than a week, and they were getting impatient. While work on the new roads and airfields was almost completed, and the area had recently been pacified, the government considered it was not enough. If the Muncherians refused to talk, then the intervention would have to continue.

The order was given for the main force of the division to get moving again, the daily air patrols had ensured that the Soviets enjoyed complete air superiority and provided them with detailed maps of the surrounding area. In addition, no significant forces had been committed, either by the Muncherians or their allies, the Chevrokians and the Cohenians.

All in all, the operation was a piece of cake, at least for the time being.

Brighton Air Force Base, Rourke's Landing, Aequatius Prime
Operation Bright Dawn, D-Day

Although the Aequatian military's Central Command had one of the highest number of staff personnel on its order of battle, the organization itself had no formations of its own under its command, meaning it would have to borrow from the Republic's other geographic and operational commands in order to fulfill its mission of organizing the nation's expeditionary operations throughout the world. This practice, despite being better suited to the individual missions undertaken by the command, also led to a number of administration issues, and time delays, when it came time to transfer operational authority within the military's command infrastructure.

One of the quickest branches to respond to requests from Central Command was ultimately the Air Force as they maintained one of the military's highest readiness percentages and quickest deployment times in recent years. Evidence of this was that within hours of the initiation of Operation Bright Dawn, B-198A Kodiak bombers, EB-198B electronic warfare aircraft and their accompanying aerial tankers were already in the air towards their specified targets in Muncheria. Satellite images, confirmed through the Aequatian Republic Intelligence Agency's HUMINT resources on the ground prior to the operation, pinpointed a number of target zones, the most pressing were those dedicated to the province's air defence capabilities, including radar outposts and airbases supporting interceptor aircraft.

Flying ahead of the 910th Strategic Bomber Wing were the aircraft of the 1045th Special Operations Squadron in the modified EB-198B aircraft. Closing the distance to within 1,500 kilometres of the eastern coastline, the bombers ran a parallel course to the coast and opened their bomb bay doors to release massive clouds of chaff which would hang in the air and effectively blind any radar systems looking out towards the 910th Wing's vector. Their mission complete, the 1045th aircraft withdrew to their rendezvous positions with the tankers for the journey back to the airbase as the 24-strong formation of Kodiak bombers released their own weapons, the majority of them being the AGM-202E Taipan cruise missile which would crater the enemy airfields and hangers and destroy exposed aircraft and fuel storage tanks, in addition to sowing mines to hamper the disposal and repair procedures. The second set of weapons launched were the AGM-202C variant, using combined effects bomblets, for use against any of the known positions of long-range air-search radar stations, it would be just over an hour before most of the weapons reached their targets, flying at a low altitude over the water and eventually land and combined with their low radar cross section, the weapons would have a relatively easy time in penetrating the air defence networks.

Despite the size of the Aequatian military and the number of its overseas possessions, the, a majority of the military's assets were still centrally-located in the home continents and required a lengthy preparation for expeditionary warfare when needed. However, when such operations were as close to the Republic as the Soviet mission to Muncheria, the Republic was in a much better position to support its ally with its varying assets from its home bases. The first units that would be deployed under the operation's mandate, the 89th Marine Expeditionary Brigade, was already en route for Hjeltland for the regular security operations against the threat posed from Ferrum Lupus, the Amphibious Readiness Group that was underway with the marine forces also included a carrier battle group formed around the RNS Redeemer fleet carrier and an attached Laurana-class Battleship, RNS Gemini, plus the usual escort vessels and submarines.

Rear Admiral (Upper Half) Willam Fisher III, the top officer amongst the group's vessels, stood on the catwalk of the Redeemer as he watched the deck crew perform their usual duties of preparing the CAP fighters for their scheduled time in the air as those below decks fueled, armed and maintained the other fighters and bombers in the carrier's air wing. Just as he finished the last drag on his cigarette and crushed it out in the nearby ash tin mounted on the wall, his chief of staff stepped out onto the catwalk, "Admiral, orders from CNO Central Command, we're to be diverted to the east coast of Muncheria as part of Operation Bright Dawn."

"Of course they'd make this interesting," He thought before turning to the commadore, "Thank you, White, make the necessary arragements for the course change."

"Aye, sir," The officer responded as he left the catwalk. Fisher looked out over the water as a pair of Bullwhip fighters flew off into the distance and sighed before turning around and making his own way inside to the carrier's command centre. It would be another day's worth of sailing for the amphibious group to make its way to its operational positions.

The Aequatian deployment on the Muncherian conflict zone had been expected by the Soviet military, albeit earlier. Experts were baffled as to why the Sozialdemokratische Republik had, at first, declared that it had no intention to support Soviet efforts but now, apparently, had changed it's mind. Most believed it had something to do with the recent tensions between Aequatio and Chevrokia.

Still, late or not, the help was appreciated by all since the Soviet mission was small in terms of manpower, not having expected a Chevrokian, Granatian or Cohenian intervention.

RNS Blackjack, Muncherian Area of Operations, Eastern Ocean
Operation Bright Dawn, D-Day

The arrival of the Mondothian 12th Naval Battle Group in the Muncheria area of operations was brought to the knowledge of the Aequatian Republic Navy, the office of CINCEASTFLT to be specific, as the commanding officers decided on a course of action. The battle group posed a significant threat to the 89th Amphibious Readiness Group built around the Redeemer and Gemini capital ships, so maintaining contact with the potentially hostile fleet was paramount in the concerns of the Aequatian headquarters.

Undertaking the duty of tracking the Mondothian warships and aircraft was Commander Cristoff Braun, a thirteen-year veteran of the navy with six years aboard submarines, as he stood in the middle of the Blackjack's combat information centre. The Valour class nuclear attack boat maneuvered into a position that would allow its sophisticated monitoring equipment to keep track of aircraft launches as well as collect valuable ELINT and SIGINT data from the Mondothian operations. Although not technically at war with Mondoth, the Aequatian submarine nonetheless remained under the surface of the water to best avoid detection by any of the trailing escort vessels. That, along with the strict rules of engagement outlined by the operations staff of EASTSUBCOM, would protect not only the submarine and its crew but also the government from any political debacle that would ensue with an unlawful action at sea.

The Blackjack would not be the only Aequatian submarine tasked with monitoring the Mondothians as nearly a dozen more attack submarines shadowed many of the supply ships and other related support vessels that were making the trip from bases and ports in Mondoth to the 12th Battle Group's position. These missions would allow CINCEASTFLT and the operations staff to have a near complete image of the Mondothian actions as well as give them an "ace in the hole" strategically should the time come for operations against their navy and merchant marine.

Curry Air Force Base, Aurunca, Aequatius Prime
Operation Bright Dawn, D-Day

The small two-door sedan zipped by one of the massive HET trailers hauling a pair of M59A1 Russ light tanks as Senior Airman Paul Haag pulled up to the gatehouse and greeted the Security Forces sergeant, "What's all this crap doing here? The road's backed up for miles with these trucks."

The sergeant examined the airman's identification card with the portable scanner and handed it back, "The 5th Airborne went on twenty four hour alert this morning, the MAC folks are getting themselves ready to deploy, Muncheria, they think."

"Figures," Said Haag with a frown, "I had such a nice weekend too."

Curry AFB was largely garrisoned with units primarily under the authority of the Air Force's Military Airlift Command and the massive hangers and runways were evidence of the strategic transport aircraft that now sat on the tarmac. Just past the front gate was a large pedestal mounting an ancient C-47 Dakota aircraft, a well-recognized symbol of transport pilots in the Aequatian Air Force, and one which Haag saw each morning he arrived for his duties. Moving through the interior network of roads and finally to the usual parking lot, the airman was on his way to the operations building with coffee in-hand to start his workday not unlike a clerk in a civilian business.

The base found itself nearly drowning in Army paratroopers, light artillery, transport trucks and a handful of light tanks as the 5th Airborne Division prepared itself for the coming operation in Muncheria. Unused hangers, a product of the recent drawdown of Tactical Air Command fighter wings on the West coast, were used as temporary barracks for the soldiers as the logisticians from the division's support brigade took inventory of the "warstocks" of cached equipment saved in preparation of contingency operations such as the current one.

The Soviet advance had gone on relatively unopposed, with only small pockets of resistance (mainly irregulars) which posed little to no threat and would be eliminated swiftly soon enough. However, the issue of the Muncherian Army and it's nuclear arsenal remained on the table, and while they had not been formally encountered, there was something about nuclear Katyushas that made everyone, from general to private, cringe.

This was a secondary concern for SOVCOM, as the city of Lumberton drew nearer every day that passed, and it still wasn't clear if they would be welcomed as liberators or attacked and forced to take the city by assault, a fate which no one wished for. Muncherians were renowned for their unconventional tactics, urban warfare being one of the prime and most suited scenarios for them.

It is most unsettling to me that the Soviet advance into the disputed territory of Muncheria has continued unabated. The Soviets themselves had only weeks ago put forth the proposal to hold an international conference on the status of Muncheria, which we would have been party to as we sincerely hoped the situation could have been resolved without the use of armed force. However, none of the major Muncherian factions agreed to participate in such a conference on the grounds that their political and territorial status was not up for foreign debate.

Despite this, the Soviet advance continues. The Soviets themselves have not given any clear reason for their operations in Muncheria beyond a supposed claim of maintaining peace and stability on the continent. Further more, they have clearly stated as their conditions for the peace conference of their own idea they would not return behind the official demarcation line which marks the Soviet-Muncherian border on the grounds that it would be detrimental to the morale of their troops.

I must ask: what of the morale of the Muncherian citizens?

The actions taken and messages put forth by the Soviets hint towards just one likely goal; Soviet domination of Muncheria. Whether it is an outright annexation of Muncherian lands or a Soviet puppet government at the helm of the territory, their intents are quite clear now. All of their proposals for the peace conference have been weighted significantly in their favour, and they state that their troops are under no obligation to return to their own territory. As we speak the Soviets are building their own roads and airfields in Muncherian territory, moving more troops deeper into Muncherian lands.

This is not peace and stability as the Soviet Foreign Minister, Alexander Nevskij, would like for us to believe. We have seen this sort of aggression from the south before; especially those in Hjeltland know all too well of the last time the Reds came across the border. Surely, those in Muncheria must feel the same way.

This outright invasion of Muncheria by the Soviets will not be tolerated any longer. To Premier Alejandro Aszenmil: if you do not, within 24 hours, disengage your troops in Muncheria and retire back to Soviet territory, Chevrokia will be forced to play its hand.

This is your final warning.

TO: Olav Jagland, President of the Chevrokian Republic
FROM: Alejandro Aszenmil, President of The World Soviet Party

It is with a sad heart that I must refuse to comply, The World Soviet Party has the right, as a sovereign nation, to do anything it deems fit to protect itself. In this case, it has been decided that the stabilization of the Muncherian territory was necessary for the defense of the Soviet homeland, always threatened by those (and I shall not name them) wanting to destroy our way of life.

Furthermore, the Chevrokian Republic is in no place to make demands. They took part in the division of Holy Marsh earlier this year, in order to gain "lebensraum", as the Akimonadi so kindly put it.

It's this kind of international hypocrisy that has discouraged us from our peaceful points of view, us Soviets need to be realistic, Haven was, is and will be a harsh place in which only the strong survive, and we can't afford to be weak.

Aboard the Destroyer FHS Defender, picket for the 12th battle group
"Watch, sixth position sentry reports a contact, possible reactor noises, type, bearing and range unknown."
"Designate contact Bee-Pee-Six-Twelve and route a ninety-two for a fix."
"Aye, contact Bee-Pee-Six-Twelve designated, Sentinel Seven is free, routed to position six."
"Very good, keep me informed."
"Aye watch."

Deep in the Defender, in the Sonar annex of the CIC reports about possible contacts came relatively frequently. The area of the 12th battlegroups operations wasn't the most interesting in Haven, but with multiple nations converging on former Muncheria, it was more active underwater than normal.
Most of the time, the contacts were uninteresting, even verified submarine contacts, such as BP-6-12 were often only briefly in the area, but each had to be designated, investigated and cataloged, any one could be hostile, and if Murphy had his way, it would be the one that had been ignored. It was the destroyers int he fleets picket positions that were responsible for nto ignoring any contact.
For maximum coverage, each picket destroyer had a set of URSVs (Underwater Remote Sensor Vehicles), Autonomous submersibles equipped with sonar equipment.
Six high endurance units equipped with high sensitivity, low directionality passive SONARs were arrayed about the ship at the '12, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10'o'clock positions, while several lower endurance but faster units with high-directionality SONARs were towed along by the destroyer, ready to be dispatched to locate a contact so that another high-speed unit with a higher sensitivity SONAR could close and identify it.
"Watch, Sentinel Sentinel seven is having trouble picking up contact BP-6-12, but it is still on Sentry six's scopes, requesting assistance on sentinel seven."
"granted, I'm tasking a -"
"Wait, I got it, contact bearing Two Four Zero relative, range is... about 30 km from us. I bet we could see it on the towed array if we looked hard enough."
"Alright, good job. Dispatching sentinel twelve to identify contact BP-6-12."

The High-speed URSVs used for identifying targets were not quiet, the target would know an AUV had gotten close enough to identify it, for the very small number of submarines that had gotten that far, it had always been enough.

Meanwhile
While the Defender sedately played cat and mouse with submarines, the fleets air wing wasn't doing so well. For starters, the first island was putting up much greater resistance than expected and SEAD operations had been suspended around the island after a large number of unexpected SAM sites had opened up on the first wave. The Cormorants had quickly responded with a volley of HARMs, but the counterstrike was too late to save many of the aircraft.
Now, the fleet was instead positioning a pair of monitors to begin shelling the island in preparation for a landing while UCAV's and decoys were dispatched to draw out anti-aircraft weapons and radars and destroy them, but so far, few were responding to the provocation and the island was not giving up it's defenders locations easily.

HMS Markant Seier, Task Force 69.3
~1100 N.Mi. South-East of Muncheria

Task Force 69, built up around the four Monarch class fleet aircraft carriers Markant Seier, Ubestirdet Mester, Trolig Fanatist and Svart Korall and three Sydøy class medium aircraft carriers Underlig, Mesterlig and Underliv, normally served as the Royal Cottish Navy's contingency force for East Haven Station, where the Task Force carried out its mandate to protect Cottish shipping to and from among others Aequatio, Hjeltland, Ichkeriya, Soviet Bloc, Ceylon and Chevrokia, as well as various Cottish interests in that region of Haven. A lot of sea for less than ninety warships to cover, yes, but it worked. The problem came now when the entire task force had been ordered to divert to a point 600 nautical miles off Muncheria in order to stand ready to assist the Chevrokian military in the neutralization of the growing Soviet threat to the Cottish's close ally Chevrokia and its territory of Hjeltland.
That was why HMS Markant Seier, the designated flagship of Task Force 69 and currently the centerpiece of Task Force 69.3 with an escort of two County class cruisers, four Type 30 air defense destroyers and two Type 36 escort frigates was steaming at best speed towards Point Whiskey, the designated rendezvous-point for the entire Task Force some 600 nautical miles due east of Muncheria, from her normal patrol area off Ceylon. Steaming at thirty knots, TF 69.3 would reach Point Whiskey in a little less than seventeen hours, where it would join the three aircraft carriers that were already on station.

Inside the Combat Information Centre in the belly of Markant Seier, the Task Force commander, Flaggkommandør Jalmar Meidell finished the final sip of his now cold coffee, sighing as he looked down on the digital plotting table one more time. It seemed that there was already a rather substantial multinational presence in the area, with a Mondothian battle group that appeared to pose the greatest headache for Meidell, a Aequatian task force that had yet to announce its intentions. He also had to factor in the high probability of Chevrokian naval forces surging out from Hjeltland and into the Theatre of Operations, and the neighboring North Point naval forces protecting their sovereign waters. Fortunately, the Chevrokians were providing Task Force 69 with good information on the whereabouts of the foreign fleet movements, as did the SIGINT and RORSAT satellites the Cottish Intelligence Branch had over the area of space. With three RORSATs getting at least two orbits over the Theatre of Operations, Meidell should be able to keep a relatively close eye on the whereabouts of the Mondothian and Aequatian naval forces. While you may manage to evade one or even two satellites, three is quite a bit harder to avoid, and when you factor in the relatively confined waters, keeping track of the locations of the potential adversaries would be relatively easy. Of course, it would mean that the Cots could be detected relatively easily too, but Meidell intended to keep the bulk of his force out in the open seas, where he'd have room to manouver and, more importantly, give the opposition a harder time to detect him.

Looking at the tactical display and the information received from the encrypted StridsNett battle network, Meidell could see that the three carriers already on station had established a barrier combat air patrol with their FA-77C Kovas navalized air superiority fighters, and deployed the escort vessels in a defensive formation that would allow them to adequately defend the four carriers from both air and submerged attacks. The formation was holding position roughly 600 nautical miles east of Muncheria, with the BARCAP maintaining a 100 nautical mile exclusion zone around the force. The remainder of Task Force 69, consisting of three aircraft carriers and their escorts, would arrive within 3 days, steaming down from off Soviet Bloc at flank speed. Whether or not there would still be hostiles for them to engage when they arrived, or if the situation would even still exist, was yet to be seen. Until then, Meidell had orders to assist the Chevrokians in their endeavours to secure Muncheria, and other than that he was to take whatever actions he deemed necessary to "ensure the safety of your command."

For the moment, all he could and would do was wait for the Chevrokian ultimatum to run out in six hours.

Field Marshal Hans Sager, Commander of the Havenic Frontal Army, paced about the room. The threat of war grew with each passing moment, and as perspiration dotted his brow, and the gray area beneath the arm of his form fitting tunic began to darken, he knew that he was, believe it or not, nervous. The Wanderjarians really had no desire for this war. Nothing really to gain from it. However, their long time friends in the World Soviet Party were in danger and this was something that they could not, and would not allow. Even as he paced about, oblivious to the chattering of the General Office Staff and scurrying about of his various S-type officers, hundreds of thousands of reinforcements to the garrison were being flown in. The majority of these were from the Luftwaffe, as President Luther Schenck had no intention on launching a counter attack if this war grew to be as large as he feared it had. However, large numbers of interceptors and strike fighters would be sufficient to repel any bombing raids and provide adequate ground support for Wanderjarian troops in the region. They would certainly have no trouble defeating the Akimonadis or the Clandonians, this was not the issue. The problem lay in how many allies who the Wanderjarian government was on good terms with would become involved. Chevrokian involvement would be terrible, as Wanderjar historically had purchased numerous Chevrokian munitions for their aircraft, and had always been friendly with the country.

At any rate, that was not his problem. He needed to focus on the task at hand, repelling any invasion of the Soviet mainland. He estimated that he had nearly five hundred thousand troops on hand, and an additional two hundred and fifty thousand on the way from the 9th Armee Korps. Numerous air wings of interceptors and fighter craft awaited the call to arms, and each squadron had a certain number of fighters in the sky at all times, eagerly patrolling the air for any infringement. The Soviet Government had given them the "Go Ahead" to take care of any enemy forces on sight, so long as they violated Soviet territory, an order that the Wanderjarians would follow to the letter. The Havenic Luftwaffe Detachment commander, Lieutenant General Guy Reinhardt, was busy scurrying about the office directing the massive influx of equipment while his juniors assisted him. All appeared to be going smoothly, despite the numerous amounts of headache and the peculiar coffee disappearances...

He could only wait. Time would tell what the end result was. As ground troops fortified their bases, dug trenches, and prepared themselves for war, Junior General Staff Officers, Corps, Divisional, Regimental, and further down the food chain prepared their commands for what was, possibly, to come. And as always, the Wanderjarians would come out on top. He hoped. So as he watched his Armor Clad enlisted personnel pass through the office, he waited. War was coming.

Eastern Hjeltland Ground Forces Command
West of the Lumberton Pass

While en route to the command center in eastern Hjeltland, General Aasmund Odegård was suddenly reminded of why he hated flying in inclement weather. The big Osprey was bucking around from the wind gusts and the view out the windows was solid white. ‘It had only started snowing lightly in the northern districts on the mainland, how could it be so bad here?’ he thought to himself. It didn’t help that it was a utility transport Osprey, like most of them were, and thus it lacked entirely any sort of sound deadening or comfort item which might improve the journey for passengers.

“We’re fifteen minutes out, General.”

His stomach started making hints that it was extremely unhappy with all the turbulence. Hopefully he would be able to make it to the base without throwing up, and so he closed his eyes to try and catch a quick nap, and hopefully get his body distracted from the bumpy ride.

When General Odegård awoke as the Osprey landed, he noticed that it had in fact, not stopped snowing. The only advantage was the visibility was slightly improved. He sighed, and traded his peaked cap for a ushanka and put on gloves before departing the tiltrotor. As he stepped out, he saw his commander for ground forces in the east of Hjeltland, Generalmajor Svein Andersen presenting a salute. Odegård briefly returned the salute and asked, “General Andersen, I thought it was supposed to be warmer in Hjeltland?”

“You’ve not come up near the mountains come winter, yet, have you sir?”

“I have not, unfortunately. I haven’t been posted to Hjeltland long enough. Anyhow, you’ve got the commander of the exiled Muncherian forces here?”

“Yes sir, they’ve set up their headquarters here. General Gary Holloway, also known as ‘Sweeper’ Holloway.”

“Why do they call him ‘Sweeper?’”

“He’s got somewhat of a short temper, sir. When he gets mad, he tends to sweep everything off the threat board and throw nearby objects. They make sure to not keep anything dangerous in the situation room when he’s around.”

While walking towards the headquarters building, one hand on their head to keep their hats in place in the wind, they spotted the Muncherian commander outside, furiously trying to light a cigarette.

“General Holloway, I presume?” asked General Odegård. “General Aasmund Odegård, Chevrokian Army.”

“How do you do, General,” Holloway said briefly before returning to his cigarette lighting attempt. “Fucking luck, isn’t it? I don’t even have a fucking good lighter. Finally…” he said, as he was able to produce a flame long enough to light the cigarette. “So anyways, what can I do for you?”

“Well I came here to see what sort of forces you would be able to muster for an operation,” Odegård said.

“Into Muncheria?”

“It’s quite likely, General.”

“Well it’s about fucking time,” he grumbled. “Here, let’s go to my office.”

A few minutes later the three were in Holloway’s office, which did not appear to be in any sort of order, with papers strewn all over his desk and the floor.

“Right then,” Holloway started. “We’ve the equivalent of nine divisions. Six of them regular army, three which came across right away, three which were formed up from later evacuees. Of these, we’ve got three armored divisions, and the other three infantry with various levels of mechanization. The remaining three divisions, are really actually six divisions, understrength Frontier Guards divisions that have formed up since the fucking communists came out of the woodwork.

“The problem, in some cases, is making sure everything works correctly. Our Nakil tanks and M165MK self propelled howitzers are in good working order, parts for them are easily available. Our light armor, the Super Shermans are slowly dwindling due to lack of spare parts. Same goes with the APCs and the big self propelled howitzers, their flat-12 engines are nice when they run correctly. Not so much when they don’t. We might have to use some of them as fixed artillery and AA positions.”

“How are you for air support?”

“Oh … you’ll have to ask my air commander, where ever the hell he is. I don’t know, ask one of my aides. If you can find one. Where the hell are they all? Damn it.”

“Thanks a lot, General Holloway,” Odegård said. “We’ll check back if the situation changes.”

“You mean if we have to go in?”

“That or if we don’t have to go in. The Soviets haven’t backed down yet, but there’s still time left until the deadline.”
