Background

The Republic of Damford was originally a member of a loosely organized group of five states known as the United Confederation of States, founded in 1810. By 2004, the states had become so closely tied that they were, in effect, one nation. On the eve of the signing of the Articles of Federation (a document which would officially unify the states into the Republic of Damford), a still-unknown power attacked the UCS, leaving only a small patch of Damford without radioactive contamination. A group of no more than 1 million Damfordines convened in what was called the Provisional Regulatory Establishment, or PRE, established by a former bodyguard of the President of Damford. The bodyguard's name was Georrge Valstrum.

The President, James Eric Gatsfield, had been in a coma from the attacks, and awoke to find his nation in shambles. He immediately appointed George Valstrum the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and immediately went about the business of securing Damford's future. Sending out a distress signal, he soon was contacted by nations such as Novacom, Yanbania, Akimonad, Legion 7, and Lynion. Some time after, the nations of Novacom (led by Supraster Auria Tolion) and Tersanctus (led by Queen Sumiko Kotomari) made the offer to relocate the whole of Damford to the region of Gholgoth. President Gatsfield accepted.

The nation is currently under extensive terraforming and construction. The rapidly growing population is quickly outstretching the resources of Crescent Isle (located off the mainland of Gholgoth) and needs to make landfall soon.

Why is such a small nation in Gholgoth? Aren't most Gholgothian nations very large and powerful?

First represented by the nation of Novacom, the region of Gholgoth came to the aid of Damford after a particularly nasty nuclear attack. During these humanitarian efforts, Novacom realized the industriousness, courage, and potential of the Damfordines. Subsequently, Supraster Auria Tolion of Novacom issued an invitation to relocate them from the nuclear wasteland that was the old continent to Gholgoth. It was an investment as much in Gholgoth's future as it was Damford's.

The Republic of Damford
Military Analysis

Background

No military records survive from before the nuclear attacks, and very few high-ranking military officers. What is known is that Damford had a collective military with the other nations of the United Confederation of States, with an Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Today's Damfordine armed forces are comprised of the Damfordine Defense Forces (the land component), Damfordine Air Forces (Air and strategic weapons), Damfordine Navy (water-borne, coastal protection, immigration), Damfordine Marine Forces (expeditionary forces, landing forces), and the Damfordine Elite Military Operations Network (special operations), referred to as DEMON.

Damfordine Defense Forces

Background

The Damfordine Defense forces make up the bulk of Damford's land-based operations, as well as land-based logistics. It is organized into armies, and then to components, to which it is further divided into battalions, companies, platoons and then squads.

The DDF Soldier

The rank-and-file soldier of the DDF, known more commonly as the 'Vanguard', is competently equipped to handle almost all battlefield situations. His daylight uniform, more often than not, is comprised of digitally patterned camouflage and conceals under it tough, lightweight body armor. At night, the uniform is replaced with midnight blue Nomex.

The Vanguard is equipped with, on extended mission, a full mess kit, survival tools, and electronics suite ("Warriorlink") hard-wired into his helmet. The electronics provide an ambidextrous targeting reticule, GPS locator, communications link, night vision, and in some cases, ammunition monitor. This suite also monitors his vital signs. If the soldier dies, the electronics in his uniform physically fry themselves.

He is trained to both function individually and as a unit. In a combat situation, the Vanguard knows his position and his responsibilities within the squad. When seperated, he is trained first to survive and second to wreak as much havoc as possible on the enemy. Within an urban setting, he endeavors to blend in with the population. In a more rural environment, he sets out to find other members of his forces and either rejoin the main force or begin small-scale guerrilla attacks.

The Vanguard is most commonly equipped with the M9 Beretta pistol and the K28 Automatic Rifle, in one of several variants.

Damfordine Air Forces

Background

The Damfordine Air Forces were founded shortly after the relocation to Gholgoth. Using money donated from benevolent Gothic nations, the Damfordine Military Department of Purchasing put in orders for hundreds of aircraft, facilities, and munitions. The DoP intended explicitly to buy an air force, directly off the shelf. The Air Forces are involved in homeland air defense; strategic and tactical bombing; long-range and medium-range support; and last-defense strategic weapons research, development, and maintenance. It is organized into wings, squadrons, groups, and flights.

The Damfordine Pilot

Damfordine F-22s During Dogfight Training (http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e170/damford/300px-FA22_Raptors_Oct2005_yfb_edit.jpg)

The Damfordine fighter pilot is supported by a huge network of flight technicians, air traffic controllers, strategists, intelligence agents, military police, and commaders. He knows that he is not equipped with the finest aircraft or munitions, and therefore has been trained to be technically superior to his enemies. The fighter pilot has been taught advanced aerial techniques such as barrel rolling, split-s turns, cobra maneuvers, and rudder feinting.

His missions can range from refueling bombers to transporting light tanks to flying strafing runs. He is typically equipped with a MP7 submachine gun, and a survival kit. Pilots are taught to immediately seek help from either friendly local population or allied soldiers in order to escape and evade.

Damfordine Elite Military Operations Network

Background

The Damfordine Elite Military Operations Network ("DEMON") was not established, as most nations' special operations forces tend to be, in secret. The Citizen's Forum, in a rare unanimous decision, ratified Presidential Bill A10014-M creating DEMON in open assembly. It is intended to be minuscule in size compared to the rest of the military, but as funded and supported as the other branches. In consequence, DEMON operators are afforded the absolute best equipment, support, training, and intelligence. DEMON is broken down into Divisions, Task Forces and Squads.

The Demon

DEMON Operators commandeering a vehicle in Bundry (http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e170/damford/11asbu.jpg)

According to statistics, the average Demon is 5 feet, 11.881 inches tall, and weighs 213.129 pounds. More often than not, he has no family and no dependents. He is 26.33 years old. This is where the statistics end - from here out, every Demon is unique. After passing a training candidacy battery consisting of physical and mental tests, the prospective Demon is interviewed by psychologists, military experts, and field commanders to determine what his individual strengths and weaknesses are. Once these are outlined, he is sent to a unit which excels in areas he lacks and is deficient in areas he can bolster. This unit will train together, fight together, eat together, and live together until either a member dies or is retired.

The only affinities a Demon has is to his squad and to his country. He is disinclined to take the lives of fellow Damfordine soldiers, but will do so if his mission requires it. He sees himself as a small weapon with a huge payload - a scalpel with an atomic bomb attached to the blade. Demons are well-versed in all subjects even remotely related to combat, including psychology, firearms handling, combat electronics, medical care, political theory, guerrilla warfare, engineering, nutrition, language, vehicular operation, and anthropology.

The hallmark of a Demon takedown is a complete lack of time to respond - they typically last less than thirteen seconds.
