Special Edition, Herjun Times: INDEPENDENCE DECLARED 30 JULY 2008!

The clanging of bells in squares throughout the city of Jurikesh could mean only one thing: The Kingdom of Herjun had proclaimed independence from the harsh Federation of the Sands. The monarch of the fledgling nation, Lord Serek of Jurikesh, has been crowned monarch of the Kingdom of Herjun by the Low Council, the legislative body charged with determining domestic and economic policy, and has sworn to bring the small nation into a new era of prosperity and greatness. The youthful monarch has outlined a three part plan for the future consisting of:

1. The improvement of irrigation systems. Only 30% of The Kingdom of Herjun is arable, with large stretches of desert and scrub vegitations in the north and east. However, given the pledged funding, the arable land may improve to 38% within the next three years.

2. Decreasing dependency on the importation of foreign goods, especially food. With an increase in land able to be farmed, there will come an increase in amount of food produced, thus making the new kingdom more easily self-sustained.

3. Healing the internal rifts caused by years of outside domination. Many factions exist within the Low Council, which has 25 seats, held by 8 different political parties. A breakdown follows:

Monarchist Party of Herjun - MPH (11 members, Moderate Monarchists). The dominant party in the low council, and party credited with bringing about the restoration of the Kingdom of Herjun.

Old Believers - OB (2 members, Theocratic Monarchists). A fringe party belonging to the governing coalition, led by the Metropolitan of Jurikesh and the pretender to the throne of the former line of kings.

Urban Restoration League - URL (5 members, Democratic Socialists). A newly formed party which joined the governing coalition after Lord Serek of Jurikesh pledged to keep the Lower Council as the governing body of internal and economic affairs.

Unionist Party of Herjun- UPH (4 members, Conservatives). The chief opposition party. Disagrees with the decision to declare independence from the Federation of the Sands.

Marxist Agrarian Party - MAP (3 members, Marxist). A radical leftist party opposed to the removal of protectionist tariffs promised by Lord Serek of Jurikesh.

The ambitious intentions voiced by the new monarch can mean only one thing - the Kingdom of Herjun will some day be great again. Consisting of only two major cities, Jurikesh (the capital city) and Kilia, a city based on mining and metal working, The Kingdom of Herjun has its work cut out for it: to establish itself as a legitimate power, or fall.

The King has announced that he will host a reception for foreign dignitaries and diplomats at the Royal Palace of Jurikesh tonight, and all are welcome. Diplomatic dialogue is crucial for the survival of The Kingdom of Herjun, and both Lord Serek of Jurikesh and the Patriarch of Kilia, Nikolai III, will be in attendence. The King would once again like to stress that all foreign diplomats and heads of state are welcome, regardless of political orientation.
