Letter to the RyanBrum Head of State

Sir,

It is likely that my name is unknown to you, as it is to many. Yet in the observation of world events I find it expedient to make contact with you. I am the head of the Royal Drilling and Refining Chartered Company, tasked with exploration and operation of fossil fuels internationally.

Provided to us is not only a Charter from the Questarian Crown but large sums of money, from our investors, to not only find fossil fuels and produce and export them but to protect and defend the assets of our investors when the Royal Navy has neither the time nor the inclination to do so.

To this end the Company employs numerous flotillas for the protection of our assets and to assist exploration efforts. Our investors have signed and bought stock knowing that the military power of the Company, which is fairly significant for a free enterprise organisation, can be used for whatever the Company sees fit.

Therefore, in exchange for a contractually-secured 15pct of your nation's oil reserves at any one time, the Company will commit its resources to the security of your sovereignty against any foe that will threaten it; as we will be bound to by the contract we will offer you. In your current predicament it would be unwise to refuse; after all, should Griffincrest suceed you will have nothing at all.

I hope to hear from you in good time.

God Save the King.

Yours Faithfully,

Nearly 400 ARAKYD XR-85 tanks rolled up to the western coast of RyanBrum. Completely powered by computers, these machines are armed with ARAKYD ST2 Concussion Missiles which are quite capable of destroying large battleships from long distances. Along with them were almost 10,000 Elite Troopers equipped with EWHB-10 repeating machine guns. The well sized RyanBrum Navy was now assembled to defend the western coast (all other coasts are sealed off by giant mountain regions that make access to the mainland impossible).

Admiral Greyhorn walked onto the bridge of Obliteration, the RyanBrum flagship, and began to examine battle stations. He was one of the greatest military minds to ever grace the RyanBrum military. First Officer Ferguson walked onto the bridge carrying the Intelligence Reports on the enemies plans for the oil fields existing in the realms of the Yarg'un Mountains.

Greyhorn: "Arm all ships and prepare to annihilate the enemy!"

Fort Ballantyne
Matwabeland, Atruria

Fort Ballantyne, home of the 1st Rapid Assault Corps, was all hustle-and-bustle. Ordnance personnel were handing out munitions as if they where candy being thrown out at a parade. Flight crews were fueling planes and helicopters. Mechanics were giving those much needed last-minute-tweaks to tanks and other armored vehicles. Infantrymen, artillerymen, and tankers were executing combat drills repeatedly, one after the other. The vibrations of excitement could be felt in the air. The First was being deployed!

Lt. General Penrod Bradley, commander of the 1st Rapid Assault Corps, peered up from the requisition papers at his desk as his adjutant, Brigadier O'Gara, entered the room, saluting.

"At ease, Brigadier," allowed General Bradley

"Sir, we are being deployed?" O'Gara inquired

"That is correct. High Command has seen it fit to grant 1RAC the honor of being Atruria's shock troops in this new war on tyranny. We are being deployed en masse, by the Air Force to the nation of Ryanbrum.

Recently, Ryanbrum began selling its oil internationally again. This, of course, again attracted the attention of the notorious Griffincrest Corporation, the oil giant, who have begun an attempt to invade Ryanbrum. Our mission is to aid in the defense of the free and sovereign people of Ryanbrum and their inalienable right to the resources that lie within their lands."

"Understood, General. How are we deploying, and who else will be joining us?"

"Well, at the moment, High Command has seen it fit to grant 1RAC the sole responsibility of conducting ground warfare. the Air Force's 17th Transport Corps is deploying us to the western coastline of Ryanbrum, where the battle will likely occur. Command has also tasked the navy's Lepanto Carrier Battle Group to provide naval and air support.

I have conferred with the Lepanto's CO, Commodore Peregrine. He has assured me that the Lepanto and its associated vessels are already en route to Ryanbrum."

"Sounds like a plan, sir,"

"Alright, now out of my office," dismissed the General, "ready the men. Operation Javelin is Oscar Mike in not a second later than three hours.

"Yessir, General," saluted Brigadier O'Gara as he relieved himself from the Lieutenant General's office.

As the hours began to pass by, a vast armada of aircraft landed upon Fort Ballantyne's airfield.

Helicopters, tanks, IFVs, and vehicles and equipment of all sorts where speedily loaded onto C-17 Globemaster III cargo planes, while troops filed onto C-130s.

As the Elite Troopers stood on the beach, memories flooded their mind of the events of nearly 3 years ago, when the First Great Oil Wars took place. Over the hill behind three Gyro Walkers began to move towards their command bunkers to report ground battle positions to the fleet. Gyro Walkers are machines that have a small computer concealed inside a thickly shielded hull mounted on two legs. On their "heads" were four mini-rocket launchers. They are completely run by computer. With the Gyro's here the Elites got into their fox holes and prepared for whatever was ahead.

The vast fleet of transport planes from the Air Force's 17th Transport Corps and escort fighters near filled out the sky as it zoomed through international airspace, east of Ryanbrum.

Inside one of the many C-17s, crowded to the last seat with troopers disassembling an reassembling their weapons, praying, or dipping tobacco in preparation, Brigadier O'Gara looked across to the General.

"General Bradley, sir, remind me again why we're entering Ryanbrum from the east, when the western route would have been so much quicker," he solicited.

"My intelligence analysts have informed me that the western coast is essentially the only one approachable by sea, and that that is where the Griffincrest paramilitaries are going to land and where their navy will station their ships. Basically, we're taking the longer route to avoid fire from Griffincrest naval vessels, if they are there."

Glimpsing some sort of small change in the settings on the left, O'Gara swirled his head to the window and peered downwards. He gasped in awe at the mighty mountain ranges that appeared to collide into the sea.

"General," O'Gara alerted, "I do believe that we are now in Ryanbrum airspace."

From the cockpit of this same plane, the pilot attempted to initiate radio contact with Ryanbrum.

"Hello. This is Colonel Thomas Andrews with the Atrurian Federal Air Force to any Ryanbrum military forces or air traffic control. Our convoy is currently above the mountain ranges of Ryanbrum's eastern coast. We do plan on landing and unloading our troops at the west coast, traveling across the countryside of Ryanbrum. However, we have several hundred aircraft and require an area to land. Please advise, over."

The massive Griffincrest armada, four fleets of the Griffincrest Naval Security Forces, began making their way to Ryanbrum. The poor nation seemingly really wanted a scrap, and two trillion barrels of oil was far, far to much oil to pass up. Admiral Lucius Ironclaw sat in his bridge, reviewing the positions of the Ryanbrum forces along the beach, as well as a satellite feed of the navy of Ryanbrum.

The first volleys were about to be launched, and these would not be anywhere near Ryanbrum. They woul dnot even be anywhere on earth. Miles above the planet, Griffincrest assault Soyuz's, hunter satellites, and solar sailors began their campaign against Ryanbrum's orbital assets. Television, radio, telephone, internet, military, and spy satellites were all being targetted by the Griffincrest orbital fleet, semding missile after missile streaking across the cold black expanse.

The next volley's would be a bit closer to home. Four GRRF stealth ships slipped up to the maritime border of Ryanbrum, and prepared to fire their missiles. In all, forty eight Tomahawk missiles flew from the fleet, screaming for several military positions along the coast.

Meanwhile, with the fleet, hundreds upon thousands of mercenaries, tanks, APC's, and various other vehicles were prepared to go and possibly die for the pay out of their lives. Each and every vehicle and mercenary all brandished the same, powerful symbol of their corporation, the symbol of the Griffincrest Security Forces

http://myweb.cableone.net/bschott/Playerdoc/gc.jpg

The men were all trained, and motivated, and willing to do whatever it takes to achieve victory in this campaign. Failure meant a lower paycheck, and when your family is starving to death in a hell hole in the Paradise City slums, the kind of money these men get by winning can go a long, long way.

In international waters, several nautical miles outside of Ryanbrum's territorial claims, Commodore Peregrine stood aboard the deck of FNS Lepanto, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, staring piercingly into the blue sky as he awaited the return of the jet squadron that he had just hours ago deployed. No. 6 Squadron of the Lepanto's Carrier Air Wing, comprised of ten E-2C Hawkeyes had been deployed in a covert reconnaissance role.

Normally, in a situation such as this, the Commodore would be up next to the communications officer, waiting for word from the pilots of No. 6 Squadron. However, on this particular mission, Commodore Peregrine had ordered radio silence. He wanted to prevent the possibility of Griffincrest Security Forces picking up their communications and being alerted of their position. The Commodore had decided that he would have to wait for an in-person debriefing.

Commodore Peregrine noted several aircraft appearing on the horizon. As they neared, he recognized them immediately as Hawkeyes and saw the Federal Air Force markings that they bore. Peregrine motioned the jets angrily and impatiently to him with his hand, though his common sense was sufficient enough to know consciously that it would not have any effect. As landing personnel got into place and waved the jets down, the aircraft landed one by one.

Peregrine rushed towards the pilots dismounting their planes and impatiently attempted to pump them for information.

"Well boy, spit it out! What did you see?"

"Sir," replied the Squadron Leader, "their mass of forces is f***ing enormous. They have four full fleets. All types of ships. I don't believe that we could realistically stand a chance against them, sir. They have a ridiculous amount of vessels, sir It's just crazy."

"Alright," replied the Commodore as he turned to Captain Hartford, his XO.

"Captain," he announced, "Get in touch with the Admiralty, inform them of these developments. Request that they send in a full fleet as reinforcements.

For now, the ROE has changed. We will not engage the Griffincrest Naval Security Forces fleet head on as per our previous course of action. Instead, we will deploy only our attack submarines on covert assaults against the Griffincrest fleet and our aircraft to attack the fleet and provide air support to ground forces. We will remain in the region, but constantly change position, to try and prevent Griffincrest from locating us."

Within minutes, new orders had been issued and all four of the Carrier Battle Group's Blowpipe-class attack submarines were en route to the Griffincrest fleet's position, with the intent of launching a hit-and-run raid on the fleet, essentially, destroying a ship or two to cause confusion, then retreating.

The Aprikan fleet, one Martin class aircraft carrier, two Hemel class frigates, three Toubkal class anti-submarine warfare frigates, and a replenishment ship cut through the water off the shores of Ryanbrum. The Aprikan fleet was small, as the navy's main goal was protection of the the Aprikan mainland and they could not afford to lose any capability to defend the shores of the nation. Such a small fleet would be little threat to the massive Blackhelmian fleet that was expected to show up, so the best course of action was to join with the Atruian fleet.

Aboard the bridge of RAS Martin, the carrier commanding the battle group stood the leader of the Aprikan fleet, Rear Admiral William "Will" Hampton. In his mid to late 30s, he was one of the youngest and brightest commanders of the Aprikan Navy.

"Rear Admiral Hampton, our AWACS just detected a missile launch, forty-eight total, mid sized cruise missiles, probably BGM-109 Tomahawks!", a radio operator on the bridge shouted.

"What? And we didn't detect the ships that launched them beforehand?", Hampton replied. A frown curved onto his face. "Stealth ships. This means they have the advantage, as our ships aren't stealth and from our reports, the Atruian's don't have stealth ships either... Patch me in to Commodore Peregrine on the Lepanto. Also, I want a flight of Shadows to strike those Blackhelmian ships, but tell them to land at Ryanbrumian land bases if possible to try and conceal our location."

"Yes sir, patching you in."

"Hello FNS Lepanto, I am Rear Admiral Hampton, Aprikan Navy, aboard the aircraft carrier RAS Martin. I wish to assist in your efforts to defeat this vile act of imperialism perpetrated by the Blackhelm Confederacy. Requesting to join up with your fleet."

Meanwhile, three B/A-2 "Shadow" stealth bombers were loaded up to strike the Blackhelmian vessels. The newest and most advanced example of Aprika's century long history of aircraft engineering, super-stealthy, similar in appearance to the radically designed Northrup Tacit Blue demonstrator, and fully loaded with eight sea-skimming anti ship missiles each in their internal bays. As they slowly flew from the deck of the carrier and accelerated to cruising speed of 280 miles per hour, the war had begun...

Back in Valkner, the capital of RyanBrum, Supreme Grand Admiral Harper marched into the office of King Ryan himself.

Harper: "Sir, there is a space force attacking our satellites! They are on all sides! What are your orders?"

Ryan: "This is excellent news. We've got them were we want them. Attack!"

Harper: "Attack sir? With what?!"

Ryan: "Admiral, as you know our nation's more current project other than making a new government, is creating a HoloNet. Just a few hours ago, our lead scientists completed the HoloNet's distribution system. At anytime it can take over television, internet and so much more once activated. Launch rounds of KRUPX MG7-Anti-Missile Missiles to hold them off. The HoloNet can start working in about 4 hours."

The Ark Royal class fleet carrier slipped gracefully through the waves, her bow bobbing up and down with the movements of the sea. With a wistful sigh she turned over to the starboard and cut a new course, her fleet moving in rough synchronisation and the other seventeen carriers line aft of her moving in tandem. She was, of course, one of twelve of her kind in the Company squadron, part of an unprecedentedly large gamble that had led to the deployment of the Company's 1st Squadron to these dangerous waters.

"Captain on deck!" There was a sharp click of boots and a snapping of salutes as Captain Waterman, the intelligence and communications officer, entered the deck. The crew were all in the pay of the Company, ex-Navy men from all over the world who seeked higher pay and better insurance deals, or just plain action.

"Good morning Captain," Company Admiral de Lapeyrere greeted his officer before turning back to business. "I pray you have some detailed information for me?"

"Yes Sir," the Captain nodded. "It's all in here. Four Griffincrest fleets on the approach. Distance fifteen hundred klicks," the Captain briefly reported. "They outnumber us quite significantly."

The Admiral grunted. "Let these other forces take a pounding. We will only move in when necessary. Lieutenant Harrison, continue the emissions silence. Let's not give ourselves away too fast."

The Company fleet slowed itself and running no sensors that could be detected by anyone listening, slowly began moving towards the Griffincrest fleet.

Flying at five miles above the ocean floor far below, the three stealth bombers were closing in on the area where the launch of the Tomahawk missiles was detected. The sea was calm and all seemed very quiet. Too quiet.

"All right guys. We only have one shot, and the ships may have moved so we need to go in for a visual. Dive down to low altitude and stay behind. I'll head in to get the visual and guide you guys in for the attack", the leader of the group said over the crackling radio.

Immediately after this, the planes entered a shallow dive into low altitude flight. The lead plane accelerated from cruise to a 350 mile per hour dash towards the position the stealth ships were known to have been. They couldn't have gone far by the time the planes had arrived At the site, so finding the ships shouldn't be difficult. What would be harder was striking them without falling victim to anti-aircraft fire. Within minutes, the lead plane was within visual range of the suspected location of the ships.

The Air Force's 17th Transport Corps had finally reached the western half of RyanBrum. Having received no instructions from the RyanBrum military or air traffic control, however, the 17th was forced to scout out a landing site of its own. Eventually sighting a large, open, and relatively flat area, the commanding officer of the 17th made the decision to land there. The armada of flying craft landed. Infantrymen filed out of the C-130 transport planes, swarming the area, and logistics personnel approached the C-17s and, slowly but surely, Challenger II tanks and Warrior IFVs were rolled out of the planes. All manner of helicopter, having been stored in the planes, as they could not carry enough fuel to make the journey alone, had been stored in the planes, and where now being hauled out.

Resting only to refuel, the 17th Transport Corps bid their Army brethren adieu and took off, turning back toward Atruria,

Within a matter of hours, the largest deployment overseas in Atrurian history had been galvanized and was ready for action. Tanks, IFVs, and Humvees rolled across the countryside of western RyanBrum, intending to reinforce the RyanBrum Elite Troopers' positions on the coast, in the event that Griffincrest was able to penetrate the naval defenses of RyanBrum's navy and launch an amphibious assault.

Mundus was a man of his word. Trillions of tons of water were being displaced by his carrier battle group. Two aircraft carriers, twelve transports, eighteen destroyers and twenty four cruisers, along with an undisclosed number of submarines, headed towards their Empire's new territory. Above them, the clear blue sky was darkened by twelve battle cruiser zeppelins and the six transports they escorted. Within a week, they would be embroiled in combat.
