Sgt. Ivan Mishchgin pulled back the slide on his Browning Hi-Power and ducked behind the armored car as shots from an M16 rang out. Two rounds whizzed by him as he took three shots from cover and radioed for help.
"Armed criminals are firing at me! Not sure, but it looks like 3 men with assault rifles! Requesting backup!" He turned it off and went back to the criminals. He saw the assailant, not 20 feet away, reload the gun. He took the chance. Leaping up, he delivered 2 rounds right into the man's chest. The last he saw was the man, unharmed, pull back the charging handle on his weapon.
The next ten officers, armed with AK-103 assault rifles, arrived and surrounded the area. One officer suffered a bullet wound to the leg, and allowed one of the criminals to escape. Another was killed with a shot to the neck that caused near-instant death. The third shot himself in the arm with a Beretta M92 moments before being disarmed. He died in the hospital due to loss of blood.

In an apartment on the southern side of the city, 8 men watched the news broadcast. Their "valiant heroes" had killed two policemen, with one of them missing. They knew he would return. They sent a man out to find him.
"Now," said the leader of the group "our final war has begun. We shall return Izhevskia to the once-great nation it has been, and rid the land of these vile communists. Send a letter to the police."
