Their Ties Will Tear Them Apart

Fokion

In various forms the nation of Fokion had existed for centuries, straddling the Fokiian Island Chain and the Fokion Mainland. For centuries the two sides had been united by common heritage, despite great differences in theology. The islanders, the powerbrokers, were Muslims and Catholics, while the mainland farmers were for the most part Anglican and other Protestant denominations.

This setup had worked well... for a while, but now, on the eve of the third year of drought on the mainland, everything was beginning to unravel.

______________________________________

"They have to be withholding food, it is the only explaination," said one senior Fokionian official, “In which case they have engaged in high treason against the state. The group of ten had been sitting at the table now for several hours, discussing drought issues in detail, and the correct responses to the crisis.
“Yes, I would agree,” replied President Andre Bigels, a Catholic, “Their actions cannot be tolerated when they endanger the welfare of Fokion as a whole, we must sieze food from them, to feed the army, and the industrial workers that form the backbone of the Fokiianic economy, the industrial workers are the most important priority, simply put.”
A older man from the side of the table sat up and cleared his throat of a dry phlegm that was thick within his lungs after years of sucking down cigarettes. His hair was gray, but glimmered with flashes of blonde, where time had not been yet. From his eyes came the wrinkles of age, wrinkles that came from squinting at the sun, from years out in the fields, laboring intensively against the heat—against the seasons, and the gods who controlled them. “If you think that the Mainlanders are dumb enough to horde food against those who control the army you have no business being the most powerful man in the Serene Republic.” After looking at the shocked faces around the table, the older man continued, “Now if it is war that you seek to make, I believe then that I have no other choice than to depart for my own lands, where I will find my kind as you call it.” With that, Franklin McGee got up from the table and walked out of the room, and onward to paths unknown.

The hot sun beat down upon the cracking dirt fields from its perch in the cloudless blue sky. Yet another day of hunger, Matthias thought as he looked up at it. He had been saving his food wisely, but with seven mouths to feed, frugality could only do so much, he needed rain now. But the rain was not coming today, Matthias could feel it, and it was not coming tommorrow either. Now when the rain clouds came, the water evaportated before it would even reach the ground, so the only hope that this farmer held was for some sort of miracle storm, one that dumped enough rain to replenish the soils without causing mudslides upon his undulating fields of wheat.

Off in the distance, a column of dirt rose from the barren surroundings of the road. What it was, Matthias did not know, but it certainly looked quite ominous to him. He ran into the house to go get his gun, and called up his neighbors on his telephone, just in case he needed their aid.
As the columns became closer to the homestead, and more and more homesteaders converged onto the farm, time seemed go by ever faster for Matthias. The homesteaders were digging mounds and treanches alongside the road, and were tearing up the road in an effort to slow the possibly hostile intruders. A few men took the broken down truck in Matthias’s shed and flipped it onto the road, offering another obstacle for the motorcade to get around.

The army convoy stopped. From their Fokion Army Jeeps they looked down at the faces of some five or ten starving men, all wielding guns, clearly ready for a fight if a fight was to come.
“By order of the President Bigels, stand down right now, and hand over any and all food you have with you for use by the people of Fokion.” Said one of the soldiers in a shaky voice.
“By order of the owner of this here land, get the fuck off my property, pretty boy.” Matthias said to the young soldier who ordered him around. Suddenly, a shot was fired. Which side fired it, Matthias did not know, but with that, he sent a shotgun round square into the young soldiers chest, knocking him down to the ground. From behind the mounds the street soon became flooded with Mainlanders, who fired at the terrified soldiers like they were a gaggle of geese.

Whatever god had put three years of drought onto the lands of Fokion, He had just sparked a war.

"Well, they've initiative." said President Valdez to his cabinet as they addressed new points in a regular meeting.

"And we've a rebellion of our own on our hands." said the fine looking, blonde, female that looked out of place as defense minister.

"I agree. We've got too many problems of out own to work out. Rising food costs have left some of our own hungry. We simply don't have the food, guns, or cash to offer any help at this time." Said the minister of commerce.

"Well, I want to issue a statement of condemnation of the rebels." Stated the President.

"But, Mr. President, we'll look stupid without promising aid too." said the Foreign Affairs minister.

"Then I suppose the best action is no action." lamented the President.

The Great Hall, the home of the National Assembly was abuzz with activity. On the steps stood hundreds of media reporters, from all corners of Fokion and the world, waiting for the latest word on the events within the quickly disinigrating nation. WIthin the main hall, aides and lawmakers sprinted about, like relay runners, waiting to hand off their baton of paper to the next man or woman. Pure chaos, that was the only way to describe it.

And in the Assembly's chambers, the Chair of the Assembly slammed his gavel repeatedly, in an attempt to gain order in the tumultous room. Around him stood some seventy-five very nervous Jurists, demanding answers and awaiting word from their respective districts. They wanted to know, what was going on, was the rumors true that martial law had been declared by Bigels, was the Army now mobilizing against a band of rebels on Mainland?

It seemed true on both accounts, since the twin seaports had just been taken over by the Navy, who as the Assembly convened was shipping a large grouping of soldiers off towards Mainland to face the rebel group that had just fought off a garrison force.

________________

In Mainland, at the Matthias Younger Homestead

Outside on Matthias's front lawn lay the remains of the garrison troops, the ones who had attacked him and his neighbors for their few calories of food. Here in the kitchen stood fifty or so men, all yelling at the tops of their lungs at the young Matthias, who soon responded with a booming call for silence.

The room became quiet, just as Matthias began to speak, "Folks, it looks to me like the Good Lord has given us a mission, a Calling in life. We are to fight the evil of oppression, we modern day Maccabees."

With that, the men stepped outside, to rummage what they could from the dead soldiers, so they may create their own army, their great Army of the Lord.

"I understand Mr. President. I will relay our government's position on this matter to the Fokion leadership posthaste. Let's hope they have the good sense to follow our advice."

Putting down the secured line, Ambassador Dale Ogawa adjusted his expensive, hand-tailored suit and turned to his aide.

"The government is concerned that this rebellion could destabilize the entire region. The Fokion government, frankly, isn't experienced enough to handle this without bloodshed. They'll make a hash of this whole affair if we let them try and handle the situation on their own."
"Please see if you can arrange for a meeting with their foreign minister. The President has some proposals on how to resolve this before it blows up."

The aide hurried out of the room, bright young thing that he was. Ogawa knew his academic and family background- the kid was born into New Potomac's elite.

Dale Ogawa didn't come from that background. With his generically ethnic looks, Ogawa looked like a regular citizen of New Potomac- with the melting pot that was that country running through his veins (though, that melting pot did not include Muslims- the nation's founding father had made sure to put this restriction in the Constitution.

Dale was a powerful looking man, with hard muscle slowly melting into the fat of middle-age. Born on the wrong side of the tracks in New Washington, New Potomac's capital city, he had made a career as a professional rugby player. Though never the fastest or the strongest player on the field, he made up for it with a stubborn unwillingness to quit. A knee injury sidelined him, but shrewd investments in real estate had subsequently made him a very wealthy man. The rough and tumble lessons of his sports and business careers had been a perfect training ground for his next battlefield- the cutthroat world of New Potomac politics. He rose in the ranks of the ruling Conservative Party, but found himself backing the losing side of a brutal power struggle. His punishment had been appointment as ambassador to Fokion. This was, clearly, a move on the part of the President to get him out of New Washington. But, regardless of his feelings, Dale was a patriot and he would support his nation's policies and interests.

As his motorcade sped to the Fokion Capitol building, Ogawa read the report regarding detailing the movements of the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Task Force. An entire brigade of New Potomac Marines, some 1,920 men and women, with their accompanying warships, had been re-routed towards this new hotspot. The UAV Carrier, NPS Pacifica, had also been rerouted, along with its escorts to provide air cover, if necessary.

As Dale walked up the stairs leading into the Capitol building, he wondered whether he could defuse this crisis, before it escalated out of control. Couldn't be worse than his third divorce, he thought to himself.

Hethran
Capital of Jimzraway

A man known only as Fox, entered the office of Charles Kain. Kain's chair back was towards the door when Fox walked in. Kain didn't bother to turn around and see who had entered, knowing that only three men in his nation had the ability to walk into his office whenever they deemed necessary. One was Roy Campbell, his Secretary of War. He knew it was not him, because the wall of cigar smoke that always surrounded the man did not come upon him. Another was a man known as Wolf, one of the two Commanders of the secret branch of the Jimzrawayin Government, known only as the Black Eagles. However, he knew it was not Wolf, because Wolf was currently on assignment in a nation on the other side of the world. The only option left, was Fox. The other Commander of the Black Eagles, and quite possibly the most skilled, and definitely the most damned lucky man, that Kain had ever known.
"What brings you to my office, Fox?"
"I have news sir...a rebellion has broken out in the Nation of Fokion, and the areas around it which it controls. I believe this would be a most opportune time to test project FC-931."
Project FC-931...Kain hadn't heard a word about that project for almost 5 years. The last time he had received a status report on it, it was still in it's Alpha test stages. If it was ready to be tested in a live combat situation...and if it were to prove itself wholly ready and operational...it would mean a very, very big ace in the hole for Jimzraway, whenever it came to an armed conflict.
"Very well...a team of 4 men, hand picked by you, will be dropped into the nation in 36 hours. They are not to be told the true purpose of their mission. Be creative...something about a possible nuclear incident should keep them on edge. After they have established themselves on the ground, wait 6 hours, and activate project FC-931. If things go wrong...the fail-safe is still in place, correct?"
"Affirmative sir."
"Good. Then you have permission to move ahead with testing. Dismissed."
Without a word, the man known as Fox turned, exited Kain's office, and went to go choose 4 men to send to their deaths.

((OOC: FC-931 isn't going to work as planned. It's a chemical/biological warfare prototype weapon delivery system, but it's only going to be about a third as effective as it should be. Just so you don't think I'm going to give your entire nation Ebola.))
