Little time had passed since Aequatio had been accepted into the Kingston Pact, an organization that Automagfreek considered nothing more than yet another incarnation of the Sovereign League, which had died and been reborn under different names ad nauseum. It came as a great shock to the Freekish people that the Aequatian government would so suddenly turn its back on Gholgoth, and speculation over Dreadfire's reaction played out on the nightly news every day with increasing intensity. The pundits were all right about one thing though; Lord Damien was going to idly sit by and watch one of their once staunch allies betray them without consequence.
Dreadfire had meditated for countless hours inside his throne room inside the Great Hall, his spiritual energies in great focus and concentration as he attempted to forsee the outcome of whatever decision it was that he made. He did not like any of the choices, but one thing was clear; he would have to initiate a course of action or be perceived as weak not only by his people, but the world in general. It was late in the afternoon on a rainy Wednesday that he summoned Minister Hartman into his chambers, briefing him on the full situation as well as issuing to him his orders. The aged Hartman himself showed signs of fatigue from lack of sleep and an excess of drinking, his eyes heavy with dark circles and his face as cold and emotionless as stone.
It was later that night that he finalized the speech that he was set to give to the Gothic media, and he scanned it carefully several times over in order to make sure it would deliver the message properly. The whiskey bottle in his office continued to empty as the hour drew near, and as the chatter of reporters filled the next room he rose from his desk and donned his hat. He stepped in front of the large mirror and looked himself over briefly. He looked like shit and felt no better. After a heavy sigh he took up his dossier and made his way through the door and into the press room, where only the sound of camera shutters snapping could be heard.
Good evening citizens of Automagfreek, and all of Gholgoth.
I am not the young, ambitious man I used to be. In fact, I am one of the few left alive who remember the old ages, of a time before our great Lord Dreadfire took power and well before Automagfreek took its place as one of the greatest powers in this modern world. I remember a time when this great country lived under the rule of President Thomas Kaye, who emerged from the ruin of a disasterous civil war under Dictator Automagfreek, who history tells us took charge of our nation after it unified following the great clash in the ULE Valley. Thomas could not have brought our country together without the help of our first ally as a nation, the gallant people of Aequatio, who sent in their famed Marines to help quell the violence and ensure the survival of our people.
It was since that moment that our two nations remained inseperable, and though Automagfreek would go through a single major change upon the arrival of Lord Dreadfire, the Freekish people watched over the ages as Aequatio struggled to find its true identity, shifting its political ideology several times. But one thing remained a constant; the close friendship of our leaders and more importantly of our people. Together our great nations fought through World War Four and World War Five against the GDODAD of old, and together we stood in the face of aggression from the likes of the Right Wing Collective and Red Bloc Army.
It was only through the Blood Pact with Pantera that we found an ally that we considered as great as our friends in Aequatio, but even then our support never faltered and never failed no matter what fate managed to throw at us. Our histories are unique, and our bonds of brotherhood were forged through the fires of adversity and war, and I believe that one of our nations would not have survived without the other. To the Aequatian people we owe an enormous debt of gratitude, and their sacrifices over the ages will forever be remembered by the Freeks and other great peoples of this land.
However it has been in recent weeks that we have seen the latest Aequatian regime fall victim to a great disease that has swept the lands of Haven; extremism. Yes my friends, extremism....the likes of which we have faced down and defeated over the ages. We have fought religious extremism during the great terrorist uprising, a time when large terrorist networks wreaked havok across the entire world until they were forcibly stamped out. We have fought political extremism during the times of the RWC and RBA, in which insane fascism and insane communism threatened to forever polarize the world, and they too were defeated in time.
The world now faces a new threat from extremist regimes who are intent at spreading their brand of "liberty" at all costs, lashing out at nation and alliance alike simply because their way of life differs from theirs. Truth be told, their brand of "liberty" does nothing but lash the people to the corporate slave stick, uprooting their way of life and forcing them into prostitution at the hands of CEO's and boards of directors. We believe that removing legitimate governments from power and replacing it with corporate controlled anarchy in which the rich get richer at the expense of the poor to be the new evil of our time. Automagfreek and Gholgoth itself have long been champions of self determination, and we do not judge entire nations based off of their system of government, for we have been close allies with democracies, monarchies, communist states, and so forth with no issue.
If the government of Aequatio forsake its ties of brotherhood and the oaths of loyalty they once gave to Gholgoth, then we will not stop them. Again, we believe in the Gods given right to self determination, and therefore the Aequatian President, Alexis Castle may make whatever decision is deemed necessary. However, we ask the Aequatian people to remember the history and sacrifice we share, and not allow their government to side with their enemies. Yes, I say their enemies because up until recently the fanatical corporate states of Praetonia and their economic slaves stood against them to the point of open war. We know the Aequatian people to be wise and just, so we ask that they reject this spread of extremism and reaffirm their friendship with the Freeks and all Gothic peoples who would have gone into the very fires of the underworld to protect Aequatio from harm.
We pray this to the Gods, but as we do we cannot stand idly by while President Castle betrays us by siding with our sworn enemies, THEIR sworn enemies. Therefore it is the position of Lord Damien Dreadfire that the Freekish ambassador and all diplomatic staff to the Federal Republic of Aequatio be recalled to Automagfreek immediately. If this corrupted government wishes to engage in dialogue with us, then they can speak to Lord Dreadfire personally. We expect their safe return without incident, and we expect all Freekish nationals in Aequatio to be free from harm or retalliation as a result of his measure.
May the Gods give the Aequatians strength, for our friendship now faces its most difficult test in history. We pray the gallant people of Aequatio make the right decision to continue to stand by their friends in Automagfreek, and to reject the fairweather support of corporate tyrants. I say this to President Castle personally; the Praetons and their slaves will abandon you. Look at how quickly they betrayed the Doomani, once their closest allies, the second it was no longer politically convenient to be allied to them. Look at how quickly they abandoned their other allies in APOC when their personal interests were no longer of concern. Our Gothic brothers in the former CAD regional alliance saw these nations for what they were, and all but the Doomani flocked to our banner of hope and brotherhood. It is sheer folly now that one of our own throws caution to the wind and aligns itself with the very evil that drove so many nations to our side. Make no mistake President, they will desert you and leave you alone in the darkness. It is only a matter of time, for our words have proven true on far too many occassions...and you know this to be true.
Thank you.
After speaking his last words, Hartman promptly exited the podium and returned to his room, where he locked the door and quickly polished off the last of the Panteran whiskey in the bottle that sat on his desk. He then slumped down into his chair, where he sobbed ever so slightly until he eventually laid his head down and slipped into a quiet slumber. Meanwhile, in a house deep in the western Freekish country an old man turned off the TV and rose from his couch, his wrinkled and withered hand gripping the wooden handle of an aged cane as he slowly made his way to the large bay window in his cabin. This man was Thomas Kaye, who had seen the birth and rise of the Freekish nation. Though time had not been kind to the now diminished former leader, a fire burned inside his soul as he soaked in the significance of events that had now taken place.
Wether or not he could be instrumental in mending Freekish-Aequatian relations remained to be seen, but he knew that he could not sit back and idly watch one of the greatest friendships in the world come crashing down . He would have to be discreet, for if Lord Dreadfire knew that he would now be injecting himself into the situation, it might very well mean his head.
