Yet not quite what you might think it is. It's been common practice for a while now for players of NationStates to periodically declare a "new" Earth for MT, free of the craziness of the older versions, where one could finally lay claim to what they really wanted. You could claim one, two, maybe even three nations off of the world map, within reason (combinations of Russia and China frowned upon for what should be obvious reasons).
This isn't quite the case with Past Altered, an ambitious (or insane) project from Arenumberg and myself. Past Altered is an alternate Earth, but claims are drawn out - i.e., territories are "filled in," so to speak, by the applicants. Want one country but only parts of the territory of a few others? If you have Paint, simply fill them in and submit your application at the claims thread. Don't worry if it's not neat or realistic looking; the "rough" edges are smoothed over when your country is added to the map.
What really sets Past Altered apart, however, is the possibilities for convergence from history as we know it. From 1183 onward, you can reshape the history of a region as you see fit (within reason). Want to shape the rise of an Aztec dominated North America? Want to see what would happen if a few great Byzantine empererors were a little greater (and a few of the stupid ones a little less stupid)? Wonder what the world would have been like if 1940 brought a civil war in the greater Prussian kingdom which envelopes Austria, Germany, and Denmark? It is all entirely possible here.
Bear in mind that this is, of course, a fairly in-depth and involved process. Your participation is required, and two-weeks of inactivity will see the disbanding of your claim. Constructing an alternate history can be a maddening process, especially as you try to weave it into the grander tapestry of the world's history. When it works, though, it is stupendous.
As well, space is limited. Europe, as usual, is already nearly full, as is the Middle East. Don't take that as a "stay away" sign, though - huge swaths of land are otherwise unoccupied, and eagerly await plausible reconstruction of their histories. When the map is filled completely, however, barring someone being disbanded for inactivity, the game is full. So hurry up!
Probably be good to give you the address:
