The Island of Horner

The House was a small, quiet cottage out in the open country side of a small insignificant nation, it was an Island, barely even noticable on a map, in certain circumstances one would simply overlook it passing it by as nothing more than a lump of rock in the middle of a vast ocean...

Dorothy was an oldish woman, she'd seen the best part of Sixty and was becoming tired in her old age, she lived alone, her husband had died many years ago defending her from a nightmare that she relived every night she fell asleep, it was a terrible event that took place... one fateful evening..

The Island of Horner: 20 Years Ago

It was raining, Rodger, Dorothy's Husband stood outside in a rainmack, he desperatly tried to nail the shutter closed against the window, the rains were lashing against the whitewash walls and all around him the black clouds above errupted in a fierce electrical storm, every now and again his hammering against the nails was joined by a backing chorus of Thunder...

"Rodger!" Dorothy yelled, peering around the corner of the door, he face being sprayed in cold wet rainwater...

"I'll be two seconds Dorothy" Rodger yelled back, he tried in vain to hear himself speak and wondered if Dorothy had actually heard him...

"Rodger, Listen to me, come back inside, you've done more than enough!"

As if to punctuate her words, the storm errupted in a great cacophony of Thunder. Rodger turned around looking at the Thunderstorm in all of its glory...

He let out an inward sigh and headed back in, shutting the door behind him and bolting the latch. He removed his raincoat and set it on the side, in the dim quiet of his home the thunderstorm continued to rage outside, breaking the silence every few minutes...

Dorothy came into the front room carrying a large mug of coffee...

"Here, this'll warm you up..." She smiled and handed him the cup, as he took it and began to sip, she slid up to him and wrapped her arms around his midsection...

"I do appreciate what you do for me Rodger... I hope you know that..." She looked up and he simply smiled and nodded, taking another sip from the cup...

There was another rumble, followed by an even lounder crash, the house shook violently as though the very earth was being moved from beneath them, instantly Rodger turned around, looking towards the direction of the noise...

"What was it..." Dorothy asked...

"I don't know... but it wasn't Thunder..." Rodger started for the door, Dorothy held onto his hand...

"Don't go... stay here, We'll find out what it is in the morning, theres nothing you can do now..." Rodger turned towards her and smiled... she cared for him a lot and he knew that, he was sure it would be fine...

He started for the Door, when something caught his attention, Flames and lights coming from between the slits in the wooden shuttering he'd nailed to the windows earlier in the day before the storm had landed and caught him by surprise...

He paused for a moment...

"It couldn't be... not this far out..." He turned back and reached for his shot gun that was mounted on the wall, he checked the weapon and grabbed a handfull of shells, it was times like this he was glad he'd got the shotgun when he did...

"What is it?"

"Hide... just hide, get out of here, anywhere... just go..." Rodgers voice had changed from being calm to being all out scared...

"No...I.." She was just about to say something, when Rodger threw her a scornful look that read "Do As Your Told" then in an instant he'd opened the door and was gone...

She stood for a few moments, half scared to death and half worried for the safety of her husband, in a moment she regained her senses and ran headlong up the stairs to the safest place she could think of... The Loft...

Outside in the howling storm, Rodgers fears had been confirmed, it lay half buried under dirt and grass sods, smoke billowed upwards and was quickly carried away by the strong winds, it was like nothing he'd ever seen before, but he knew what it was. He'd seen these on the news, Screaming over head deploying death where ever it roamed...

He'd seen them on news reports hovering over buildings while black clad soldiers decended from them on ziplines, he'd seen them strafe convoys of refugees, he was sure that the pilots were sick, sick men and it was nothing but sport to them... but then the grim realisation of reality kicked home... these were not men at all.... but the vast Terror Troop Army of Kraven...

and this... on his very front door was a Wrecked Kraven Air Arm Vtol...

He held his shotgun up and approached, very cautiously, the wreckage was strewn over a wide area and he was sure that most of them inside would have been killed in the impact...

He continued towards the craft, his stomach had tightened to a knot and the adrenaline in his system had sped his heart to such a rate that he could litterally feel it in his chest. The Rain continued down hard, he was very close to the craft now, when suddenly he heard a crack, something on the soft earth breaking, a twig or something else...

He turned around to face the noise, when he was greeted by the fully armoured frame of a Capitol Police Trooper standing up to full height, The Troopers armour had been badly damaged in the crash and areas had been dented and bits had broken off...

The Trooper turned its gaze towards Rodger, who stood with shotgun ready, Rodger fired on instincts alone, The Trooper caught a shotgun shell to the torso, it blew red chunks of meat outwards, but still the Trooper lurched forwards, now, fear over took Rodger and his next shot went wide... the Trooper grabbed the shot gun in both hands and in a deft manouver span the shot gun round and smashed Rodger in the face with the butt of the weapon...

Rodger dropped to the ground, it felt like he'd been hit in the face by a steam train going at full pelt, and he vision swam as he felt his body hit the cold wet ground, he lay motionless for a moment, unable to control his senses, his jaw was on fire, he'd just been attacked by a Kraven Trooper, his first thought was his wife... but he could move, he just lay there as the Trooper dropped the shotgun and retreived the MG42 that lay a few feet away...

With slow diliberate movements, The Trooper headed towards the house, its weapon ready, it was loosing blood, but was still a highly efficient killer... even with a wound such as it was currently sporting...

Inside the house Dorothy remained still, she hid in the Loft of the house and tried to keep as quiet as she could, he breathing was rapid and sporradic, the adrenaline was flowing through her veins like it was her blood alone, her heart raced like a humming birds and all of her senses told her that she was going to die...

She'd heard the shotgun shell go off twice, and then nothing... after a few minutes she'd decided to go and see what was happening, ignoring the advice of her husband...

She walked downstairs, onto the landing, next to their bedroom, downstairs she heard the Door open and a set of heavy footfalls enter the house...

"Rodger?" She called out but their was no response, she cautiously went down stairs. Slowly. One step at a time...

She Called again, and continued down the stairs, until she was in the front room, looking around, she called once more, and headed into the kitchen...she gently pushed the door open, when her eyes filled with pure Horror, a fully armed and Armoured Capitol Police Trooper was stood in her kitchen, its eyes glowed red with nothing but cold indifference, it viewed the world the same no matter what.... Orders and Objectives... Targets and Kill Confirmations...

The Capitol Police Trooper walked forwards, barging its way through the door, in the commotion, Dorothy fell over, the Trooper pulled parts of the door off that had now splintered, its heavy frame was no match for the flimsy construction, She screamed, when suddenly a shot gun blast rang out in the kitchen, The Trooper shook for a second as the round impacted on its back...

Instantly the Trooper wheeled around and brought its MG42 up to bear, it let rip with a three round burst that sent Rodger tearing through the door and sprawled on the other side, his chest covered in blood and gore...

Rodger could feel things starting to fade, but the screams of his beautiful wife kicked him back into reality and conciousness..

He rolled onto his side and coughed, blood spurted onto the wooden floor, his blood soaked hands scrabbled for the shotgun, and with it, he used the wooden butt to drag himself back into the kitchen, with every ounce of his strength fading, each movement became more and more of a labour, but through his dimming vision he could see the Trooper drawing its Bayonet, the silver blade glimmered in the light of the Kitchen, as the second Shot gun round impacted with the Trooper, the man Machine paused for a moment, before dropping the bayonet and falling over backwards landing with a heavy thump...

Rodger breathed deeply, blood was filling his lungs and each breath was becoming harder and harder... Dorothy rushed over, Tears streaked her face, she screamed, there was nothing she could do... no matter how hard she screamed it wasn't going to stop Rodgers bleeding....

He looked up at her and smiled, She cradled him in her arms one last time, as he whispered the words to her... "I love you"

Rodger looked into his wife's eyes one last time, as finally his vision faded into nothing. He'd done what he'd intended to do from the start... Protect his wife... almost in a sense of Irony, he'd beaten the Trooper not only in combat but also in its Doctrines... He'd completed his Goal... it had not...

And knowing that he'd saved his wife allowed him to let go...

That night, Dorothy lay there with the body of her husband, screaming and crying all night long and never once letting go of her beloved's body...

This is The Curse of Kraven....

Present Day

She sighed, and turned from the window... Kraven was a plague... even the grass where the craft and crash landed hadn't regrown and it stood as a reminder every time she looked out of the window, that Kraven had left its mark on her life...

She Closed her eyes, and opened them.. For a breif second she thought she saw the twin red eyes of the Kraven's Monsters glowing in the distance, but in the same second they'd vanished... she shook her head, sighed again and returned to her front room....

They looked exactly like the others of their kind, only they moved differently, they seemed to have an almost human gait about their walk, they didn't walk in unision or swing their arms in perfect timing, they simply walked forwards, they didn't seem to have a purpose or a goal... they just walked...

Their armour was badly maintained, it hung from their bodies and was pock marked by bullet holes and various signs of battle damage, their helmets were stowed onto their back packs and their gas masks hung limply around their necks...

They looked at the ground as they walked, none of the four was interested in the forest around them, it was like every other tree they had seen before and to them, it was one more tree in thousands...

"How far in are we?" one of them asked, looking to the other three, the squad leader stopped walking and bent down, he let out a sigh, as though he was thankful for the breif respite in walking...

"About three k's in... I'd say we have another hours walk before we meet with Red Fox.."

The others nodded and checked their wrist watches, nodded again and pull out a ration from their side pockets, each of them began to take a bite before taking a sip from a water canteen, one was passed around between the four of them, conserving water for the duration of their trip..

One of them checked his weapon, ensuring it was clean, he pulled the mechanism back and then slowly slid it back into place, looking for any sign of dirt build up...

These were Troopers... Kraven Troopers, each of them bore the Kraven Insignia tattoo on his face, below the right eye on the cheek, but these were different, they weren't like normal Troopers, they ate from ration packs and talked amongst themselves, these were like none of the others before them...

These four Troopers were special, something more... Something equally sinister...
