Province-00024(Codename: 'Mirska Prov'), Totalitarian State of Red Tide

Located just too the east of the Red Tidean Southern Mountain Provinces, Mirska Prov(named for the provincial capitol, Mirska) was the breadbasket of Red Tide. Containing a population of nearly one hundred million people, it was the #1 wheat growing region in Red Tide, the #3 corn grower, and the #2 meat-producer. It also contained the largest population of the Red Tides largest minority, the 'Forgotten'.

The Forgotten were the original natives of Red Tide who had been brutally exterminated by the initial colonizers from the Russian Empire, then they had been further brutalised by the Soviet Union after it re-established control of the Red Tidean lands. By the time of the Soviet collapse, the Forgotten had been reduced to less then five million people, 63 percent of whom lived in Mirska Prov.

The rise of the Totalitarian State had led to further repression against the Forgotten, driving many of them into the fold of the democratic rebel groups. The 'Red Tidean Front for Liberation' (RTFL) was particularly strong in Mirska, which lacked a presence from the State Armed Forces. There were only one or two State Aero Force bases and few bases of the State Guard(the Red Tidean Army) present. This, plus the rather rural nature of the province making it hard for the various towns and farms to be monitored by the Intelligence-Commissariat, led to Mirska Prov eventually gaining the highest number of rebels out of all Red Tide provinces.

Even then, it was still quite a shock to the Red Tidean Government when the Province erupted into revolt. The State Guard bases were overrun as were the various Intelligence-Commissariat buildings. The rebels had managed to steal large numbers of old Soviet-equipment from the Red Tide Mafia facilities in the eastern part of the Southern Mountain Provinces. Within two days, the State Guard and Aero Force units in Mirska Prov were defeated, fighting too the death in typical Red Tidean military style.

The central Red Tidean Government in Ariga did not fully absorb the news until this proclamation was issued to the ineternational community.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM DRMP GOVERNMENT
"The Democratic Republic of Mirska Prov hereby declares its independence from the Totalitarian State of Red Tide. For too long have we been repressed, down-trodden, and hunted by the Totalitarian State. NO MORE! We have established our own government and shall govern the way it always should have been since the collapse of the USSR: by the people!"
End Statement

A few hours later, the Red Tidean response was released.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM TSRT GOVERNMENT
"The Totalitarian State hereby declares Province-00024(from here on referred to by codename, 'Mirska Prov') under Martial Law due to unusually high levels of communist rebels in the area. All foreign nationals in Mirska Prov are hereby ordered too leave. Failure to comply will result in deportation.

In addition, none-Red Tidean military air and naval traffic over and on Mirska Prov airspace and waters is hereby suspended until further notice. Failure to comply will result in the offending craft being shot down/sunk."

1700 hours, VPA Base Beta

The Sokolov class Aerohaulers stood out like massive, black leviathans on the pristine grey airfield. Unlike standard civilian zeppelins, the Sokolov were deep black instead of the usual off-white. For the first time in history, a "stealth" zeppelin would be flown. Beneath the Sokolovs, countless NVID soldiers and technicians hurried about their ever important work.

On paper, the operation would be rather simple. The Aerohaulers simply needed to infiltrate the nation of Red Tide undetected and drop off some weapons and troops. Unfortunately, they would have to get by the rather paranoid and alerted Red Tide Military. Thankfully, the stealth technology would make the job much easier and the craft would be almost invisible in the darkness of night.

Even though the Volzgradien Military would not be officially "invading" Red Tide, they would certainly be causing some havoc within. Contained inside the 3 Aerohaulers were enough weapons to equip a fairly substantial army. This, of course, they were planning to do. Also, around 40 NVID spies and soldiers would aid the rebels in maintaining the freedom of their new found nation.

If the operation is completely successful, then the entire rebel army would be equipped with top of the line small arms and vehicles. Not only that, but they would have a fairly large tap on the Red Tidean army's communications courtesy of the NVID spies. If all things go according to plan, then there will be another nation in the Volzgradien's pocket.

The DRMP rebels quickly found themselves in trouble. Red Tidean airstrikes demolished every single RADAR and communication tower in Mirska. The DRMP armored units which were moving towards the border were under constant air attack. In addition, the State Naval Forces had deployed four Carrier Battlegroups offshore which were erecting a blockade against the DRMP.

The Volzgradians would have to be careful when approaching the shore, because wandering too close to a Red Tidean CBG would result in detection, even with stealth... and the CBGs were moving constantly.

Even worse, for the rebels, was the forces the State Guard was mobilising against it. Three Guard Army Fronts consisting of one million men each and equipped with thousands of armored vehicles and even more artillery, were moving into position on the DRMP/TSRT 'border'. The troop movements were impossible too miss due to the signal traffic and the sheer size of the formations being brought into play.

But stealth was never a familiarity with the State Guard, only massive, overwhelming numbers and firepower.

2300 hours, Red Tidean Airspace

Despite the many words of encouragement said before take off, Captain Ulan couldn't help but be nervous. He knew that the stealth technology and darkness of the night would protect him, but still a grip of fear held his heart. Every sign of turbulence made him sweat like he was in a hothouse. The only thing he could do was pray not to be caught.

Recent news from the rebels wasn't good. They had been completely blockaded by the Red Tidean Navy and Airforce. On the ground, a millions strong invasion force was preparing to crush the rebellion once and for all. The weapons they were sending were the perfect weapons for this kind of situation. All were reliable and durable, and of course almost all were purpose built for guerrilla warfare.

They were now only approximately 20 minutes from the drop zone. The dim lights of homes on the ground now looked like searchlights to the frightened crews of the zeppelins. Unlike the massive and nigh-unstoppable war zeppelins used by the airforce, the Sokolov class was only armed with 10 AA missiles and one 7.62mm minigun. Hopefully, they wouldn't have to use these weapons.

Finally, the drop zone came into view. It was very inconspicuous from the ground, just a meadow, but from above it was like an airport. The three zeppelins began to gently "float" down to earth as they approached the grassy fields. The gently bump of the soft earth beneath them alerted them to their landing.

Almost immediately the NVID troops within clambered out and began to unload the heavy equipment. Out of the shadows stepped a rather disheveled looking man. He looked at the masked faces of the NVID and then began to talk, "Are you the Volzgradiens? I was told to meet some arms dealers here." One of the NVID stepped forward and faced the man, "Yes we're the Volzgradiens. All the weapons you need to hold back the Red Tideans have been unloaded. I trust you have brought some help." After a hand gesture from the man, almost 50 rebels emerged from the black woods.

The "leader" yelled out a few orders and the rebels began to hoist the heavy crates and vehicles onto several flat bed trucks. After a half an hour of hurried packing, the rebels were beginning to return to their base. The Volzgradiens on the other hand started up the zeppelins' engines and took off into the dark night.

Skies over Mirska Prov...

The squadron (twelve jets) of Su-30RT Jet Fighters screamed through the night on their combat air patrol. This was Charlie Squadron of the 54th Fighter Regiment, they were keeping a look out for any unauthorized intruders into what the Red Tidean Government still regarded as its own airspace.

The rebel airforce consisted of... nothing. The only aircraft that should be in the skies over Mirska Prov were the aircraft of the State Aeroforces. The twelve aircraft were constantly scanning the horizon for any aircraft anyways.

"This is Charlie-8, unidentified aircraft spotted, five o'clock low..."

Charlie-1, the squadron leader, glanced at his RADAR.

"I have nothing on my scope..." He said, then looked in the direction that Charlie-8 had given. Sure enough, with his nightvision he could see three... airships?

"Thats not ours." Charlie-2 said.

"I know," Charlie-1 snapped, "We'll give them a fly-by then order them North."

The aircraft peeled off towards the Volzgradian Airships.

In an instant, countless alarms began to blare as the Red Tidean aircraft neared their position. Thankfully, they were already fairly high in the air and didn't appear that suspicious. Captain Ulan on the other hand, was a nervous wreck. If all went well, the Red Tideans would pass them off as civilian aircraft.

Captain Ulan was now pacing rapidly in the command gondola. His thoughts were racing from making a stand and fighting to fleeing like a coward. Finally, an idea came to him. Wasting no time, Ulan sprinted to the communications terminal and desperately attempted to message the incoming Red Tidean fighters.

"This is Captain Alexander Ulan to Red Tidean aircraft. May you please explain why you are coming so close to our flight. We are civilian craft." He let out a deep breath as he finished speaking. Now the only thing he could do is pray that they would believe him.

"This is Charlie Squadron, you are in violation of a Red Tidean Military Exclusion Zone, all aircraft who do not belong to the State Guard, State Aero Forces, or State Naval Forces are prohibited from entering the airspace above Province-00024."

There was a moments pause as the Red Tidean squadron leader consulted with his superiors.

"You are hereby ordered too set a course North for Airbase-27. We will escort you and the other two craft too base."

They flew on, North, deeper into Red Tide. The sun came up as they were crossing the provincial border. Down on the ground, one could see rebels hurriedly digging trenches and setting up the few artillery pieces they had.

Then they passed over the amassing Red Tidean lines, it was truly a sight to behold, with immense columns of trucks and armored vehicles moving up. At 10 kilometers beyond the border, they passed over the Red Tidean artillery positions, stretching as far as the eye could see East-too-West was a staggered line of 122, 152, and 203mm self-proppelled and towed artillery guns, with about 30 meters between each gun. It was a truly immense line of firepower.

They continued on for another 100 kilometers before they reached Airbase-27. The radio crackled and then:

"This is Airbase-27 to Captain Ulan, you are hereby ordered to land in the meadow about 100 meters too our West and prepare to be borded. The Intelligence-Commissariat would like to have a word with you."

Captain Ulan was shaking as he responded to the Red Tidean's message, "Confirmed. We are currently making preparations to land." Ulan knew that if the Red Tideans found out what they were doing, they would surely be exectued. The only chance of survival they had was if one of the airships stayed behind to cover the retreat of the other two.

Despite the clear firepower difference between the Venkov and Sokolov classes, they both had very similar protection. Having flown over the Red Tidean front lines, Ulan knew that at least two could reach Volzgrad without being destroyed. However, this would only work if one of the airships remained behind. He quickly reached for his radio and dialed it to the Volzgradien channel. "You two, get as high and far away as possible. We'll remain behind and make sure the Red Tideans are appropriately distracted."

With no response the other two airships began to rise steadily. Thanks to the abundant helium within, airships could actually fly high enough to thwart enemy fighters. However, this maneuver put massive amounts of pressure on the airships frame. If an airship captain was inattentive, then the entire substructure of the craft would implode.

SR-71, 82,020ft bearing South by South-West 186° @ 2,500 F/s
Five Seconds out from Revolution Region Border "Mirska Prov"

The SR-71 was well above the firing ceiling of any SAM batteries in the region especially the old Russian batteries that the Red Tide Rebels were using, but A.R.H.P Strategic Air Command wasn't taking anything for granted, the Recon Plane was traveling just under its top speed of Mach 3 and just slow enough to take snapshots of recent developments in the old USSR territory. The Prime Administrator hadn't actually issued a statement stating A.R.H.P's stance in the ordeal, but anyone who had ever dealt with grouchy old man knew that he would side with the apparent Victor. So the SR-71, the fastest, highest flying Recon craft in the A.R.H.P had been dispatched to gather Aerial Photos of Rebel, Red Tide and any other involved nations, movements.

The craft screamed across the border at well over 2,500F/s and only had time to snap a few photos of Rebel AA Installations and a captured Red Tide Airbase before the pilots found something far more interesting... Three Stealth Super-Zeppelins. Two of the Airships were closing in on their Flight Circling and were close enough for the Camera aboard the SR-71 to catch a shot of the Volzgrad Insignia stamped on the their sides…. The PA would be extremely pleased when he read this report.
Red Tide2
08-07-2008, 23:15
The SR-71's bearing had been wisely chosen. The SR-71 was detected by Red Tidean RADAR easily enough and identified as a military aircraft and none-Red Tidean, which would have gotten it automatically shot down by Red Tidean air defenses. But its NorthEast to SouthWest course in a diagnol line across Mirska Prov had prevented it from being engaged, the only four regiments(consisting of MiG-25RTs) Red Tide possessed that could go after it was too far North to get there in time. And the rebels, of course, had nothing to bring it down with.

It also meant that the SR-71 only got a fleeting glimpse at the Northern Red Tide/Mirska Prov border. There were three million rebels in Mirska Prov. However, the lack of motor vehicles and the wrecking of railroads and roads by Red Tidean airstrikes in Mirska Prov meant that only nine hundred thousand of those rebels were close enough to the action to take part in the coming battle. Not to mention they only had around 750 total main battle tanks(and 700 of those were old Soviet T-72s) and only four hundred more armored personnel carriers. Their strength in artillery consisted of 1,500 obsolete WW2-era guns and rocket launchers.

The State Guard, in the mean time, had only deployed a fraction of its forces against the rebels, yet the rebels were faced with 3 Guard Army Fronts, for a total of 3,000,000,000 men. Each Guard Army Front had a bit under 8,000 main battle tanks and armored personnel carriers(with twice as many APCs too MBTs) and even more self-propelled and towed artillery guns and rocket launchers. The Red Tidean infantry forces were completely motorized and and their transport infrastructure was completely intact.

Airbase-27

Unfortunatly, the Volzgradians stealth was not exactly working for them anymore. 100 kilometers from Airbase-27 was a powerful MkR-XX Over-The-Horizon RADAR, which had been tracking them awhile after they crossed the Mirska Prov/Red Tidean Border.

The Red Tideans noted the ascent of the Volzgradian Airships and immediatly contacted them via RADAR.

"We must make this clear... all three of you are hereby ordered too land. Any attempt at fleeing will result in you being shot down."

Ulan paused before speaking. "We in no way want or condone warfare, but we must warn you. For your own good we suggest you let us be."

The message that came back was chilling:

"Unfortunantly, your government has no jurisdiction over our airspace. As a matter of fact, from how it appears, the Volzgradian Government has committed a act of war by against us by sending you into our territory. Let us review here:
1: You were caught in an area that was declared a no-fly zone about two days ago.
2: When caught, you claimed to be civilians despite the fact that civilian aircraft are not ordinarily stealthy. However, we have checked with the Intelligence-Commissariat and your aircraft and the records indicate that there are not, and have not been, any authorized civilian airships inside Red Tide, much less Province-00024.
3: When you and your friends were ordered to land and be boarded, your friends attempted to disobey our orders, when we ordered them to correct themselves, you suddenly reveal to us, although not outright stating it but we got the idea through the simple use of logic, that you are in fact military airships.
Given these facts, you are lucky to be recieving this reply and not have been blown out of the air already. So, now you have two options, you can land and surrender yourself too the waiting Intelligence Commissariat... or we can open fire and have every right to do so. Your call..."

There was a sudden pause, then before the Captain could answer back.

"Oh, and implying that we will be attacked by nuclear weapons is not wise, for we could devestate your nation as well."

If you set us free, we will provide intelligence on all the rebel positions we managed to see. We can provide you excellent intelligence without the rebels even realizing. The weapons we gave them were declared obsolete almost three decades ago."

He wiped his brow of sweat before continuing. "So what do you think? Would you rather have both of our nations become nuclear wastelands, or crush the rebels even faster?"

The silence of the dark red-lit cockpit was suddenly broken by the incessant sound of one of the many alarms that the SR-71 possessed. The ships co-pilot Cpt. Mark Antony remarks to his flight companion, "They've found us." The man nods and flips a switch, silencing the alarm; without turning to the Co-pilot he responds, "Prepare for evasive Maneuvers" and eases the throttle all the way up, coaxing a second sonic boom out of the aircraft as it hits Mach 3. Cpt. Antony glances over a grin on his face as he says, "Very inconspicuous..." and laughs.

He had taken control of the family a little over 20 years ago and in his time the nation had prospered, and while many people would call him a dictator, they just didn’t know or understand him. Prime Administrator Christophe A. Phillips did what he thought needed to be done for health of the nation, and if he stepped on some democratic toes…. He didn’t care. At the moment when the young officer came running over with the pictures of the Super Zeppelins he was bent over a Light top table review the final designs of the S.M.C. He straightens up and takes the papers away from the officers. He remains silent for a movement before a grin breaks across his face. “Always sticking their nose where it doesn’t belong..”, He murmurs. He flips the paper over and pulls a pen out of his pocket, on the back of the page he scribbles a note:

Atten Democratic Failures, your recent peace disturbing antics will not be tolerated by the A.R.H.P. surrender. You have been warned.

He turns and hands the paper back to the officer, “Have this note turned into leaflets and airdropped on the rebels and get me the SA of Foreign Relations on the line and tell them to prepare a letter of Consolation and a Pledge of Assistance for Red Tide and a Letter of Warning to these other bozos.
