The Invasion of Hanharria - The Central Front

Noern

70,000 Noernon troops move steadily towards the Hanharrian border. Massive airships slowly drift through the skies towards the border, columns of tanks and armored vehicles on the ground steadily trudge onwards, followed by large units of infantry marching behind.

Emperor Leonus eyed the army below as his scarf fluttered in the wind, his eyes shielded by thick aviator goggles.

"My children, what have I done?"

Sergeant Thord peeked over the log he was hiding behind and eyed a mob of thugs waiting by the side of the road, apparently fussing over some sort of trap.

"This is Recon Troop 4, Eleven tangos sighted, I say again, Eleven tangos. Requesting permission to engage."

"Permission granted. Weapons free, Recon Troop 4."

Thord raised a thumb to his unit, lifted his weapon up, and fired. The first target had no clue what was going on, he had just stood up, about to kick the man next to him when the three rounds hit him, spraying blood and tissue over the huddled mass. The rest of the unit opened up, showering the men with rounds. Thord eyed the mess of wounded and dead and fired another burst for good effect.

"Road is clear. Send the boys in."
Hanharria

It wasn't too long before message arrived on horseback that Hanharria had been invaded by organized militants. The Emperor greeted his subjects upon his balcony, admiring the lush land about them, how Noernians threatened to take it from Hanharria. His speech continued upon how the "Noernian race" was inferior to the "Hanharrian race", and therefore must be stopped before their "unholy seed" is planted anywhere else in the world. He rallied the militia, calling for all men not required in the basic maintenance of the country to take up arms and bring the fight to Noern. Capital and corporal punishment were among the main persuasions in the reasons to enlist.

Colonel Seiler straightened out his beret, checked his ammunition, and inspected his G36 for the last time before he stepped on board the enormous Il-76 troop transport. The plane had been painted white with the letters "LPBIH" in black staring the congregation of soldiers in the face. They would be dropped in at low altitudes in a parachute jump due to the lack of air facilities in Hanharria, and from there they would make their way to the capital city to evacuate and protect the civilian population.

"Seiler!" One of the larger soldiers yelled, also with a blue beret on.

"Yes, sir, Commander Faust?" He responded, curious. Generally, when a superior officer addressed you directly, it meant that you were about to be volunteered for some hellish and dangerous patrol duty, or perhaps a nice anti-genocide mission. Those were really the ones you wanted to tell your kids about...

"Colonel, I need you and your squad to secure a hotel in the center of town. Several tourists are holed up there and need evacuation before the brunt of the Noern military hits," he said, glancing down to his watch. He looked up and cupped his hands over his mouth. "FIVE MINUTES, PEOPLE! FIVE MINUTES!"

The remaining soldiers marched into their transports on the tarmac and took their seats (uncomfortably) on either side of the two aisles, parachutes strapped on and fasteners...fastened. Many took their blue helmets off to give themselves some air because the Il-76 was not air-conditioned or ventilated. They had a long flight ahead of them.
The Royal Code

When the news reached Parliament at midnight the following day, only three senators were present to review it. Without five minute's discussion, all three stamped their approval of a deployment, and in a matter of seconds, the entire 1st Royal Army Corps was, once again, put on full deployment alert.

For the first time in over 2 years, the 1st Royal Army (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13340268&postcount=3) was the first Army component to be called for immediate dispatch. It would take less than 5 days to collect the 180,000 men that made up this fighting force, and less than one day for the two airborne divisions included to begin preparations for a combat drop. The 21st and 52nd Airborne Divisions would drop into neutral territory north of Neorn, and set up field operations while they waited for the rest of their force to arrive.

The Commander of the Grand Fleet, Sir Admiral Wallace Jellicoe, was woken from his sleep by a phone call shortly after the parliament had stamped the order. He was given orders to collect his ships to commit to a rapid-deployment, to conduct combat operations and transport the 1st Royal Army.

In a matter of minutes, all the key movers and shakers began sprinting into action.

In less than 10 days, the Noernians ( is that the plural?) would learn to respect other nation's boarders as Royal troops amassed on their own.

OOC: Eh, we ought to move this thing along a bit, so I guess i'll continue my part.

The men stood in four lines inside the modified Il-76, nervously eying the red parachute light on the side of the cabin. Commander Faust stood in front of them yelling something about the justness of their cause and the people who were relying on them, though no one seemed to hear. Colonel Seiler strapped his rifle onto his back and pocketed his beret, waiting for the order to jump. Thirty other similarly armed planes flew in formation behind them, the noise of the engines on each overwhelming the young men in the cabins.

The pilot glanced over to the co-pilot, tapping the navigation chart in front of him.

"We're go for launch, hit the button."

The parachute light flicked from red to green with an audible ping, and the Commander waved his arm in a circular motion, indicating that the lines of men should jump. Seiler gripped the pack in front of him and inched his way forward until he was next to jump. With a rush of freezing night air he thrust himself out of the plane, his chute deploying exactly on-time. The other planes had begun to jump as well, and the only thing left now was to regroup on the ground for the march on Miraa.

The ground came as quite a shock for the men of LPBIH, but they regained their composure and remembered their training. Another Colonel ran over to Seiler and helped him out of his flight gear before moving on to the next soldier. Commander Faust climbed on top of one of the IFV's which had been airdropped in and spoke into a megaphone.

"Regroup on this position! Everyone find your transport, we move out in ten minutes!" He yelled, his voice carrying out for several kilometers.

To Emperor Leonus,

The AIA (Avalic Intelligence Agency) and I have watched the video thoroughly and the AIA believes that the video was an actual scene. Though if this isn't a one time incident we will not take military action on Hanharia. We are receiving reports that you are sending a major force into Hanharia's borders. So of course we'll have to beat the clock on evacuating the citizens. If needed we have a missile that will intercept the warhead, if Hanharia chooses to use it. Though of course, you'll have to be careful about air craft as it could contain a nuclear bomb. We are not going to interfere with any military activities on both sides yet.

Leonus stared at the slowly moving blips on the tracking screen aboard his massive airship.

"Your Imperial Majesty! The Royal Code have mobilized, and the peace keepers are beginning to deploy in the capital!"

"We know the terrain better. Entrench the First and Fifth Infantry Divisions in the Gorund Forest, ask them to prepare IEDs and ambush points along the road. They're going to be fighting a guerrilla war. Prepare to encircle the capital with the First Cavalry and the Eighth Armored."

"Right away, m'lord."

Sergeant Major Odri adjusted the sight on the VT-95 cannon towards the center of the village and pressed the commo key.

"Avoid civilian casualties if you can help it, and keep an eye out for the Royal Code. If you catch sight of any non-Hanharrian resistance, report it over all applicable channels and fall back to Rally Point Zulu. Break. Fire. Over."

The armored unit opened up on the village, blowing huge chunks of building from their foundations, rubble and bodies lay smashed in the street. The armor advanced cautiously, firing sporadic bursts of .50 caliber fire into the ruins at moving figures.

"This is a little unnerving, Captain, it's almost like they don't even care.", the driver shouted up at the gunner amidst the sound of the cannons opening up again.

"I know."

An army of one hundred men stood outside Hanharria's largest city Miraa, all armed appropriately with blades. The weather was rather cloudy, as usual, but the temperature remained a startling 25 degrees Celsius. The nearby forests had been completely cleared for use as transportation vehicles, leaving the area looking like a barren savanna with an overcast.

Miraa was locked behind large, fortified walls all citizens and government officials hiding in their structures. Rumor had it that while Hanharria suffered almost no meals during war-time, the government managed to be happier than ever.

Death followed quickly, and rumors easily leaked into Miraa of the destroyed villages left behind in the wake of the army of Noern.

To All Involved In The Conflict,

We would like to evacuate civilians from Hanharia so we ask of you not to fire on our helicopters. There will be a flag of Avalic on the helicopters and they will all be NHI NH90, they should be able to evacuate 18 people at a time with a crew of 2 people. We will send 200 of the 500 we own to Hanharia to evacuate civilians that are not participating in the war. We will evacuate 3,600 civilians at a time and temporarily give them refuge in our colony, we ask you Hanharia to allow us to evacuate the civilians.

OOC: Avalic, trying to steal my humanitarian thunder? :D

The column of armored vehicles rumbled down the dirt road at full speed, kicking up dust as they went. Messages squawked through the radio intermittently, none of them overly important...except the last one.

"Helicopters incoming, looks like a column. No one fire a shot, remember, no interference unless civilians are in danger."

Colonel Seiler motioned to the gunner of the M50 "Lucas" (an Aequatian design) to open the hatch and he peeked his head out, only to see a line of five NH90 helicopters pass by overhead at high speed heading in the same direction as the column was. The Avalic flag was painted on the sides of each.

"Colonel Seiler, are you seeing what I'm seeing?" The voice of Commander Faust came over the radio, concern evident in his normally calm tone.

"Yes, sir, a formation of helicopters. Definitely not ours, over."

"Right. Inform the UH-96's, tell them to give the unknowns a wide berth. We're only five minutes out from Miraa, and I don't want the first wartime casualty of Lesitung to be from a friendly. Over and out."

All other forces in the area continue on, we do not wish to interfere with any operations." Then the Avalican Air Force soldiers were going in from house to house to take the civilians to Avalic's colony of islands.

A messenger rushed up to Leonus and knelt down breathless.

"Your majesty, Leistung is... Leistung is approaching. Lord General Valkarius says we will hit them if we do not halt the attack on the side they are approaching from!"

Leonus, visibly irritated tapped his boot on the floor and replied to the kneeling man, "Very well. Encircle them and inform them that the city will not be safe to enter until we have captured their leader and resistance has ceased."

The messenger stood up, bowed deeply, and ran off to the commo officer to relay the command.

Almost instantly, sixty of the one hundred militiamen outside Miraa were rained upon with debris and bullets. What forty survivors could still move instantly fled for their lives. "Commander Faust, we have a message incoming!" The driver of the IFV yelled, flicking on the radio.

"Leistung peacekeepers, divert your current course. The city is not safe to enter until our bombardment is complete. Over." The radio crackled out and turned off.

"Bloody hell. Do not divert your course. The bombardment is killing more civilians than it is soldiers anyways, and our mandate is to protect the innocent. Move into the city via the east gate and commence operations immediately. Over," the Commander said, speaking into the radio microphone. "Gunner! Engage targets only in self-defense, no stray bullets."

"Roger that, sir," came a gruff voice from the gun turret. The M50 ground to a halt outside the city gates along with the other 60-so vehicles, all waiting for someone to open up.

"We're sitting ducks out here, Colonel Seiler," Faust muttered to his second-in-command over the comm. "What do you think?"

"I vote for blowing this thing down. It's only iron and steel, sir, a few sabot rounds on the hinges should take it out. Over," the Colonel responded, tapping the gunner's turret. "Did you hear that, Private? Hinges with sabots."

"Yes, sir. Plotting a firing solution now. Shall I await an order from the Commander?" he asked, as the turret began to traverse with a whirring sound.

"No. Squads are independent in the Leistung military, unless given a super seeding order from a superior, which we're unlikely to get. Open fire."

"Rodger that, sir."

The booming from the M50's (http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z317/Aequatio/AFVs/M50_Lucas_Chieftain.png) main gun was deafening, as the gunner fired six rounds at the two hinges on the right side of the gate.

OOC: Eh, I realize that this is godmodish, but since Hanharria hasn't responded in a while, I'm just going to say that the sabots destroyed the gate. Tell me if anyone has an issue with that.

The gate came down with a resounding crash, and the first few M50's rolled in through the dust at high speed. The Noernian infantry circled around the column, gesticulating and looking highly annoyed that they couldn't blow up any crazed militiamen from the air.

"Ignore them, men," Faust's voice said over the radio. "Continue on and don't fire unless fired on. UH-96's will be approaching at low altitude to evac any civilians we secure, but they'll need a place to land first. Therefore, our primary objective is to secure the town square, which has enough open space to allow helicopter landings and to set up a command post. Colonel Seiler, your primary objective is to secure the hotel. Over and out."

Colonel Seiler reached for the radio and pressed the commo button, speaking into the microphone to his squad (36 men).

"Men, continue on your course towards the center of town and move in on the large gray building. Its a hotel where militiamen are holding a number of foreign tourists hostage. We'll blow through the doors, flash-bang the militiamen, and then clear out the rest of the building in a similar manner. Stay alert, and don't fire unless I give the order. Over and out."

Four M50's broke off from the column and fired their engines at full-speed towards the target building. Two UH-96's helicopters flew overhead, each laden with a full complement of soldiers, and each painted the same off-white as the IFV's were. Bullets ricocheted off IFV's armor, and the men inside waited tensely for the order to disembark. Suddenly, a voice came over the radio.

"This is Corporal Thalberg of the spy plane SR-71 #61-7694. I am currently observing a large mass of militiamen massing in the town square and around the hotel. Proceed with caution, all units."

Secretary of War, Tobias Wall was not pleased at the message. The President allowed him to send more military forces if needed. Though this may make Hanharian more hostile to Avalic. Emperor Asa Bakadu looked on at the destruction that had befallen Miraa. Fellow government officials took up arms, desperately looking to their emperor for advice. He shook his head as he looked out his window, seeing the rioting amongst civilians and militiamen. All throughout his life, he had control over them, his little playthings. They were barcoded, his objects, his -subjects-.

He walked into his panic room, and there he impaled himself with his sword. It would be thirty minutes before his brother, the Secretary of Defense, found the man's body.

The militiamen instantly rebelled, following the commands of the Avalic officers. They joined fellow Hanharrian civilians, marching on the government buildings, all hoping to take the head of their emperor.

It was little more than ten minutes of discussion before everyone in the room had agreed that another conflict, one which demanded the righteous involvement of the Makaarian people, had surfaced. Hanharria, a small and little-known nation, was collapsing under an invasion by its neighbours; a humanitarian crisis loomed.

Parliament drafted a message to the warring parties, to be broadcast across international media to reach both openly and clandestinely involved nations.

----------------------------------------------------------

To all those nations whose troops have entered Hanharria

The Monarchic Assembly of Makaar has decided that it will deploy peacekeeping forced to Hanharria to oversee its reconstruction and avoid the crises that so often occur after an invasion of this scale.

We are preparing to deploy the 1st and 5th Royal Guard Brigades, as well as 10 Regular Army Brigades, to the nation. Any attempt to resist their arrival will be taken as an act of war against Makaar and responded to in the harshest possible manner.

Signed, the Government and People of Makaar

----------------------------------------------------------

On board the HMS Benevolent, a Makaar-class supercarrier of the Royal Navy, klaxons alerted the crew that their presence at their stations was needed. Pilots ran to their aircraft, strapping on their helmets and lowering the canopies over themselves. Below them, the ship's complement of 800 Royal Marines set sail on small troop transports for Hanharria. Covered by the carrier's 120 Makaarian F-44ABs in the sky, they would secure a landing site for a force incoming by air.

In Makaar, the first of many C-130 aircraft were being loaded. The first was to carry the RAF Regiment, who would parachute in to help the Royal Marines in their task.

"Holy God, Commander, there's a mass of militiamen and civilians headed towards the town square. It's bigger than anything I've seen here before," the spy plane pilot radioed in to Faust's IFV. "They look armed to me."

"Thanks for the heads-up, Lieutenant. Faust out," the commander responded, moving towards the side of the cabin to get a look outside. The column had reached the town square only a few minutes ago, and the fortifications were only just being erected. Faust stepped out the back ramp and shielded his eyes from the dusk glare. The men nearby were placing sandbags around the street entrances to the square, while others set up razor wire and machine guns, all being brought in by helicopter.

"Men, gather round!" he yelled, stepping onto his command IFV. "A mass of combatants and civilians is on their way to the palace for unknown reasons. In the interest of national stability, we have been ordered to intercept and disperse the group. The majority of our forces are patrolling the city and there is no way for them to respond in time. Myself, Colonel Seiler, and two other men will attempt to confront the militia, but if the meeting goes badly, we will hold this position until relieved by Noern or Avalic forces. Everybody got it?"

When the latest news of Norernian troops killing citizens of the city of Miraa, the top-brass gave the official orders to execute the drop.

320 heavy-lift aircraft, carrying the four thousand men of the 21st and 52nd Airborne Divisions, crossed into neutral territory north of Noern, and began to conduct their drop.

It took less than 20 minutes to get all four thousand men on the ground, and reformed to receive additional equipment, to include a large number of surface to air missile systems. Over a thousand miles away, the Royal Navy steamed at full speed towards Noern, ready to deliver the rest of the Royal Expeditionary Force.

The 21st and 52nd established a southern facing perimeter about 50 miles north of the Noern boarder. The local terrain was relatively flat, but heavily forested. The approach, if and when it occurred, would be a slow one, though on the other hand, they had a defensive advantage, should the Noerns decide to attempt to attack.

Time would bring the Royal Expeditionary Force into contact with the other nations currently pitted against Noern, but until then, the Royal Army would conduct it's operations independently.

OOC: I would be happy to oversee negotiations, if no one objects. The parties involved would be Noern, Hanharria, and The Royal Code, as peacekeepers such as Avalic and myself wouldn't seek to gain.

ooc: I don't care to use 3rd parties to see to my gains or losses. Noern and I can conduct our session privately. Obviously, if we do not come to terms and armed conflict breaks out, then that status will be revoked.

OOC: Hm, yes, though your role in the course of the war is debatable, so you probably wouldn't lose or gain anything. In the war, what did you really...do?

ooc: My nation is a Imperialistic one, lands my troops conquer become part of the empire. My usual role is to waltz in after the most of the fighting, push over the exhausted enemies, and enjoy my new addition.

Not saying i have intentions to do that here, because i could just as easily establish bases nearby Noern to keep an eye on things.

To the Governing Body of Noern, communique of the Royal State Department:

On the behalf of the greater interest of the Colonial Empire of The Royal Code, this department openly rejects the prospect of using a 3rd party mediation procedure. The only negotiations that will take place will take place in either a Noernian city, or a CERC city, with respective delegates. If our two parties cannot reach agreement on time, place, and personnel within the next 15 days, military action may be used to further along the diplomatic process.

OOC: Trouble brewing! Oh, by the way, I'm not as arrogant as depicted in the letter below - that's just my military, who by virtue of the fact that their massive budget means that their overpaid soldiers are basically underpinning my entire economy, tend to assume that there isn't a foe they couldn't destroy.

To: Makaar
From: LPBIH Headquarters
Subj: Peacekeeping

We do not wish to dissuade you from sending peacekeepers, but know first that Leistung already has 6000 peacekeepers and Avalic has pledged some as well. The humanitarian situation seems well under control, and we are hesitant to add more factions into the already volatile situation in the capital city of Miraa.

-Sincerely,

Commander Faust
Acting general
Leistung peacekeeping forces in Miraa

To: LPBIH Headquarters
From: Makaar Peace Operation In Hanharria

The Makaarian government is not currently of the belief that 6,000 peacekeepers can ensure peace throughout Hanharria, given the current situation in Miraa which could easily be duplicated in other settlements. We can bring overwhelming technological and numerical superiority to the area, and indeed that is what we intend to do. 15,000 Royal Guard soldiers from the Rapid Peace Enforcement Corps are prepared for deployment to the area by sea and by aircraft.

We suggest that all peacekeeping forces be unified and placed under the command of Brigadier-General William Foster, the leader of the Makaarian peacekeeping forces currently en-route.

Rex Derige Nos,

Fleet Admiral Dr. Sir John Harold Winters PhD
Supreme Commander-in-Chief, Royal Navy and Royal Marines
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff War Committee

------------------------------------------------------

The first 100 soldiers landed by C-130 on the small area near the coast claimed as a Makaarian airbase. On the coast itself, 1,000 Royal Marines from the rapidly forming collection of ships off the coast were establishing a beachead for the operations and preparing for their march towards Miraa.

To: Incoming peacekeepers from Makaar
From: Office of the Chancellor
Subj: Closing of hostilities

I have serious reservations about the unification of our peacekeepers, as well as you sending peacekeepers in the first place. There is now only sporadic fighting in Miraa, and unless The Royal Code renews their invasion, I cannot see a reason for our troops to be unified, especially under the command of one of your men. Commander Faust has been on-station since the opening of hostilities, and has my full support. If you insist on sending 15,000 of your men, know that I will have no choice but to reinforce our 6,000 soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Division with 8,000 more in order to bring the division to full strength. This is so that our force in the region will not be either overwhelmed or taken too lightly once your troops arrive, and should not be taken as cause for concern.

-Sincerely,
Chancellor Ringkampf

To the receiving body of Makaar:

The Colonial Empire of The Royal Code wishes to implore the Makarrian decision makers to re-evaluate the situation in Noern. Civilians are still meeting gruesome fates, and the Noernian governing body has been unchanged, thus can be expected to continue aggressive maneuvers and crimes against humanity. By upgrading Markaarian peacekeeping forces, Makaar is quickly becoming a host of defense for the Noernian government. The senior intelligence staff in the Royal State Department fear that Makaarian troops may attempt to defend the Noernian government in armed conflict, while knowing true and tall that the Noernians have a dangerous and corrupt government.

If negotiations fail, and the Noernian government is not reorganized, the CERC humbly wishes that the Makaarian forces not interfere with Royal Military Operations. The CERC has no intentions of making their involvement in Noern a prolonged one, but merely a quick and decisive police action to rid the world of a unstable and potentially global-commerce-dangering government. Upon the removal of said government, however, the CERC would be more than happy to allow the Makaarians, as political allies, to institute the new governing body of Noern as they saw fit, so long as our two nation's ties remain largely allied.

The CERC is not out to make enemies in such small-scale conflicts, and an ally as potentially powerful as Makaar is far too valuable to pass on. The CERC awaits with great anxiety for the official Makaarian response.
