Asgard Artificial Satellite, Lagrange Point 3

The SSTO arrived at Asgard, home of the Commonwealth’s 8th Defense Fleet. The satellite itself was a 4-mile diameter asteroid, brought in from the solar asteroid belt. Existing alloys within the asteroid had made construction of space structures simpler, and it now served as the last port-of-call aside from the Tyr Spacedock of Mars. The shuttle was escorted in by a pair of SF-01 Sleipnir fighters, their delta designs shimmering like daggers in the sunlight. The captain of the newest ship-of-the-line was onboard. At age 28, Lt. Commander Edmund Carlson he was the second youngest captain of a Spacy combat vessel. As the shuttle approached, the Commander removed his command cap and ruffled his dark brown hair. Inside the hat was a picture of his wife, Natalie, with their daughter, Jamie. Carlson pushed off from his seat and floated to the nearest viewport as the shuttle entered the internal docking bay. To their starboard, tendered and connected by numerous umbilical’s was his new command, the FSS Mark of Ansuz. It was an Asgard-class attack corvette, third in its line. Unlike most Commonwealth ships that consisted of only a primary hull, the Asgard-class was different, with starboard and port ‘secondary’ hulls that housed the hangar bays. The connecting ‘wing struts’ even made it possible (theoretically) for the ship to survive atmospheric flight-and it had been built with that possibility in mind. As he stared at the prominent hammer and sickle on the starboard, Carlson knew that he had arrived.

A smaller shuttle took Carlson over to the Ansuz after the SSTO had docked. He was again nervous as the shuttle passed through the starboard hangar’s plasma window. There was a small shudder as the skids hit the deck, and he took a breath, standing up straight as the hatch opened.

“Captain on deck!” the deck chief barked as he stepped out. A small detachment of the crew-most likely those not vital to the ship being underway-had been assembled to greet them. At the head of the small column was Lt. Yuri Cherenko, the Ansuz’ Executive Officer.

“Captain, welcome to the Ansuz,” he saluted. The rest of the assembly quickly followed.

“Glad to be aboard,” Carlson said as he returned the salute. Now came the official part. He produced a manila folder, removing a sheet of paper and reading from it. “Let it be known, that as of 1423 Commonwealth Standard Time, I, Lt. Cdr. Edmund Carlson hereby take command of the FSS Mark of Ansuz, LCAS-03.”

With formalities aside, the detail was dismissed as the hangar crew prepared for landings. With Lt. Cherenko at his side, Cdr. Carlson headed for the bridge. On their way, the Captain and his XO held idle conversation, sharing stories of their past experiences. Carlson was not surprised to learn that Cherenko had originally been a submariner-a lot of Spacy personnel had been in the Silent Service. They drifted through the winding corridors, taking several drop shafts before getting to the main bridge.

Like the rest of the Asgard-class, the bridge was built in several tiers. At the top was the captain’s chair as well as the Comm. and radar/lidar stations. Below that, in a semi circle, was Helm, Ops and Engineering. Tucked slightly aft and below of the second tier was a compact CIC, with a central hub for the XO and four action stations that controlled the ships weapons and the ATC station. Currently, only the Helm, Comm. and radar stations were occupied. Aside from ATC, the CIC was vacant during regular ops. Redundancy and automation had made the ship very self-sufficient, relying on a minimalist crew if necessary. Taking his station, Carlson prepared to bring the ship underway.

The umbilical’s severed, the great Atjun furnaces were awoken, their power surging through the ship. Ordering power to the engines, the helmsman brought the Ansuz out of drydock. The large doors of the bay opened, and the ship was christened by sunrays breaking over the Earth-a welcome sign. Flanking the Ansuz on port and starboard were here sister ships, the Flame of the AEsir and Light of the Vanir shot starbursts from their secondary batteries.

“Incoming transmissions from the AEsir and Vanir, Captain,” the Comm. officer reported.

“Display them.”

Smooth sailing and clear skies-Capt. Ramius, Flame of the AEsir

Good luck and a good wind-Capt. Cristof, Light of the Vanir

“Send our thanks and compliments,” Carlson ordered.

“Sir, another transmission from Space Defense Command,” the Comm. officer replied.

“On screen.”

Overhead, the ethereal project-beam solidified into an image of Admiral Gagarin, Chief of Spacy Operations.

“Captain Carlson,” the Admiral addressed him as he stood at attention, “Is the ship prepared to be underway?”

“Yes, Comrade-Admiral. The Ansuz stands ready to fulfill her patriotic duty to the Motherland.”

“Then you may proceed on your mission,” the Admiral concluded. “Godspeed.”

Carlson nodded as he saluted and the beam image dissipated. He took a seat and looked at the readouts on his command console. Recovery of the ship’s fighter compliment had been completed and Engineering showed no signs of disturbances in the Atjun reaction. Helm had plotted a course that would take the ship out of nearby gravity fields as they prepared for spacefold. He keyed the internal PA as the ship was cleared of the moon’s gravity well.

“All hands, this is the Captain,” he began. “I am honored to be your commanding officer on this, our Motherland’s newest achievement. It is a testament to Commonwealth ingenuity and determination. Our orders are to initiate spacefold and conduct training exercises at the Tyr space station in Martian orbit. Upon conclusion, our cruise will continue to Alpha Centauri, Wolf 359 and Bernard’s Star before returning to Earth orbit. I am confident in your skill and in our ship. All hands, prepare for spacefold.”

“Engines stand ready,” the Helmsman reported.

“Initiate spacefold,” Carlson ordered.

Incandescent motes of energy began to form around the ship. Ripples of electric energy arched across the hull, releasing flares of non-space that died instantly. The energy began to solidify around the ship in a bright greenish-yellow halo. Inside the bridge, all seemed fine until a klaxon sounded.

“Unexplained gravity well forming!” the Engineering tech reported. “Field becoming unstable!”

“Cut engines, halt the spacefold!” Carlson ordered.

“We’re too far into the maneuver, subspace eddies would tear the ship from itself!”

“Captain!” the Helmsman pleaded, “If we fold like this, the jump would be completely random!”

“I know…” Edmund muttered, clenching his fists as the ship disappeared from normal space.

Somewhere in the depths of space, the Ansuz emerged in a bright explosion of energy. From the unfathomable reaches of non-space, the ship was spat forth, its attitude slightly off as he drifted to a halt. Faint traces of electric arches continued to run over the hull even as the ship came to a dead stop.

"Report," Carlson said as he righted himself.

"Main power is fluctuating, secondary systems have activated...calculating position," Cherenko responded.

"Sir, Astrometrics reports that no star charts are matching our position," Helm answered.

"I want radar on a continuous full passive scan," Carlson ordered, "And a CAP to patrol at a radius of 25 km."

The newly christen system of Assssikuchituk or Astik we to be the main hub outside of the Nebula not only had it vast mineral wealth and clear space with no nebuals the kewen had come to hate and dislike it had three not one but three whole solar bodies capable of sustaining Collection pools the system contained a Large rocky world with 8 moons and only four gass giants as far as the kewen were concerned it was a perfect system.

Large Oddly shaped ships of varying sizes were in high orbit of the Rocky planet surrounded by the 1st Collection and Intergration fleet which consisted of 6 Battle cubes 12 Battle Crusiers and 4 Carriers + hundreds of numerous support vessels although only the Battle Crusier Arch and its escorts were in system.

On the bridge
<hisssssssss> "Ssssssire we ssssensssse that there are newcomersssssss to thisssss sssssysssstem" came a voice from the bridges pitch black darkness

"Sir, incoming transmission," the Comm. officer reported. "Triangulating position."

"Acquired," radar answered, bearing 030-125. Bogey is 1.3 km in length at-"

"Play the message," Carlson said with a raised hand to stifle the radar operator.

As the bridge crew listened to it, their expressions turned to surprise and amazement. First contact with an alien culture.

"Prepare to record and send this message," the Captain ordered. "This is Captain Edmund Carlson of the Commonwealth Spacy ship, Mark of Ansuz. We have reached this region through navigational error and would gladly accept any assistance you may provide."

"Thank you for your assistance," the Captain's reply came in. "Would you be willing to send over a representative in order to help with our navigational systems?"

Engineering

"Dammit, now what's going on?" Chief Engineer, Lt. Gordon Haverish asked. Since the exit from the fold, ship's power had begun to fluctuate.

"It looks like we've sapped all our reserves," a crewman answered.

"That's bull, we have enough power to last us-!"

"Sir, according to these readings, the magnetic spike also caused a phased variance...we're leaking energy."

"It's like a hemmorage," Haverish muttered. "How long until the Atjun furnace can be restarted?"

"Another half hour," came the reply.

"Cut non-essential systems. Turn off automatics for plasma windows, the linear catapults, anywhere we can spare. I'll inform the Captain."

"Haverish, I need those furnaces on now," Captain Carlson said.

"I, know, I know," came his response. "But if we don't find the leak, it'll be the same thing. Atjun energy will bleed from the power system."

"I'm well aware, but right now we need something to keep us going. I'm confident you can repair the leak before it will affect our Atjun reserves."

"Sir, Kewen shuttle approaching, power online in 3...2...1...mark," the XO reported. "Launch systems are online."

"Guide the shuttle in," Carlson ordered.

"Aye, sir," the ATC replied. "Kewen shuttle, you are cleared to land in the starboard hangar. Follow guidance beacons and my orders for landing."

In the starboard hangar, the plasma window reactivated as the hangar door opened. The ramp extended as guiding lights activated along its surface.

"Well, look at that," the deck chief muttered as he scratched his head from underneath his service cap. "It looks like it can be stored in a Sleipnir bay..."

And he was right. The protrusions looked exactly like the built-in devices used to keep the fighters in their stacked bays. But the work of a hangar is never over, and the crew soon went back to their duties, setting up another pair of fighters to relieve the ones on CAP duty. They barely even noticed when Cdr. Starling headed towards the shuttle to greet the emissary.

Starling was bit taken aback. I guess that's what I get for watching too much Star Trek, she chided herself as she walked forward. As she walked forward, Starling realized she probably shoulda worn her regs instead of her flightsuit, zipped down and tied at her waist.

"I'm Commander Starling, the Ansuz' Commander of the Air Group. I'll escort you to the conference room." she explained. As she turned to lead the way, she added, "Onboard, we keep gravity at 1/4 that of our home planet. If you have trouble getting around, let me know."

"Anyone wanna explain why we're waay over here," Starling pointed to their current position, "And Earth is waay over there, on the other side of the black center?"

"Darling, how'd you get into the Spacy?" Lt. Cherenko asked smartly.

"My looks, of course," she said, pushing him out of the way as she landed.

"Ahem, we have somewhat more pressing matters," Carlson said to the two senior officers.

"Sorry, Skipper," they said in unison.

"Ok, so, I don't know techie stuff," Starling interjected, "But, do we have enough power to get back? I mean, I know fold technology let's us travel far, but it wasn't designed for this, right?"

"Well, you're correct," Cherenko offered. "It seems whatever that gravity spike was, it provided enough of a boost to shoot us this far..."

"And we have no way of knowing what caused the spike, let alone reproducing it," Carlson argued.

"Well, I'll be damned if we have an astrophysicist aboard," the XO muttered, "But if this nebula causes gravimetric distortions, it's possible it can help us get back..."

"But folding within any gravity field makes the jump completely random," the Captain interjected, "We could end up even farther away, in another galaxy, even."

"Anyone else remember that crap of a movie called Lost in Space?" Starling asked. "'Cause this sounds just like it...sucks more 'cause this is real, though..."

"Let's run this by our chief engineer. He knows enough about the fold drive...maybe there's a loophole."

Before anyone could say more, there was the gentle sound of the hatch opening and a scuffling of feet. They turned as the CIC and bridge crew was relieved.

"Shift change," the XO explained as they turned around.

"Man, I sure could use a bite to eat," they overheard the ATC mutter to his comrade.

"Hm, that's not a bad idea," Starling said. She pushed off and drifted backwards to the hatch. "Well, this really isn't my area anyway. I'll go ahead and grab chow with the kiddies," she announced, much to the chagrin of the enlisted rates.

She led him to a couple of free chairs opposite the crewmen from the bridge. Both looked uncomfortable as she took her seat. And that gave Starling an idea...

"Khassuk, this young man here is the ATC that guided you in," she explained, nodding to the Petty Officer.

The first to be built were our cruisers, followed by the first battleship, the Segried. It was about three years ago that our first Asgard-class, the type the [IAnsuz[/I] is, was launched. It was thought that it was necessary to have a small, fast and cheap vessel with a comfortable enough armament in order to deal swiftly with any engagements. Main Engineering was a long corridor along the x-axis of the ship. It was built around the center, which housed the Atjun furnaces and fold reactor. Engineers and machinists sprawled all around the compartment, each on their separate tasks. In the center, surrounding a table and console station was the Captain, XO and Chief Engineer.

"Well, we found the energy leak," the Lt. said. "A ruptured conduit. It knocked out surrounding internal sensors, so when we scanned our sensors didn't detect it."

"That's a piece of good news," the XO said. He nodded to Starling and Khassuk as they approached.

"Getting shot outta big gun sounds fun," Starling quipped before getting serious. "That could work, couldn't it, Chief?"

"Theoretically," the Chief Engineer answered. "Though, we'd have to make sure the ship could withstand the stresses of being accelerated that way."

"Aren't we capable of launch from the mass driver?" Captain Carlson asked.

"Yes, but the stresses compared to that are...incalculable," the Chief answered again. "Let's look at this technology," he turned to Khassuk, "We have to at least try."

"Well, how does a fold work?" Starling asked. When she recieved wondering looks, she held her hands up defensively, "Hey, I'm an experience pilot, they didn't really give me an education in anything else except the Sleipnir."

"In layman's terms," the XO began, "The fold begins as energy from the furnace is concentrated into a single area of space in the direct center of the ship. The application of energy causes a small quantum singularity to open. Now, quantum theory suggests, and is supported by our technology, that wormholes surround the event horizon of these singularities. Our fold system merely 'guides' the ship through one of these wormholes towards another area in space..."

Hangar

ATC had decided to bring the fighters into the same hangar bay, in order to expedite their orders to get underway. The hangar's forward area split along its axis as the linear catapult was activated. It now activated as a decelerator, slowing the fighters down as they entered the bay. The first fighter landed smoothly, it's wings folding in almost immediately after landing. The other fighter landed a mere 20 seconds later. From her vantage point on a raised platform, still affectionately called, Vulture's Row, Cdr. Starling nodded in satisfaction. The Captain picked up a Comm. microphone. "All hands, this is the Captain. You are to provide any support our allies request and allow access to any systems or areas as needed." He switched it off and turned to Khassuk, "You won't need to touch the engines, will you? We can't unseal the furnaces."

ooc: sorry i haven't replied. i went ocd on another thread...

"hmmm, no we have backup plans" as he spoke the first of the transpots landed on the ship dispatching 20odd kewen and their equipment, along with four pint size horrors which were, on the scale of a normal human being still quiet large. Drafing the kewen engineers they unloaded various equipment and things te,porary interital dampeners that looked like old Seamines(you know ball with spikes) and a single large pillar.

When they had finished unloading the equipment the second shuttle had arrived with another 20kewen the first one had headed back, working togethor the fourty kewen engineers seperated into groups and began taking the Interia units to seperate parts of the ship while two took the pillar to the control room.

on the brige.

oooc: Very sorry for late post, jolt ate mah post and i didnt notice my bad

Through the ship Kewen Engineerering teams were placing seamine like contraptions, which anchored themselves to the hallways seemingly unmovable activating them and setting them to remote activation the kewen engineerers went back to the hanger except the the three which lugged a pillar like machine to the control room

mere minutes later appearing on the bride the three Kewen Enginners set down the pillar in the middle of the room preparing it for activation the top part of it split revealing a single large red button along with a small green one next to it.

"Hit the green button first, then hit the red button when the Green button begins to change color to red when the Inertia dampeners activate we will Activate the Slingsho, godspeed and we wish you luck." He said as he followed the engineers back to the hanger

Throughout the ship, alarms rang as they prepared to get underway. Blue alert lights flashed along the corridors as the crew went to their action stations.

"All hands, this is the Captain," Cdr. Carlson said over the PA. "We're preparing for launch. Secure all stations and compartments."

"Captain, all compartments are answering ready," the XO answered.

"Good, let's get ready..." the Captain said as he strapped himself into the command seat. "Initiate sequence."

ooc: idk how you want it to work, so rp the launch.

Outside the ship the slingshot activated and three yellow beams latched onto the hull of the ship.

the ship was slowly pulled back to a distance of 1km, then the pre prepared boosters activated and the ship was hurled at a nwely forming Jump Window at the edge of the system. upwards og 1000G's were reached in the split second it took to get to the portal before the ship was in Hyperspace crusing along till it would evenutally slow and drop out.

The Intertia Dampeners would hopefully work if the captain remember to hit the big red button.

ooc: eh, sorry for the delay

"Activate the Kewen dampeners," Captain Carlson ordered.

"Dampeners engaged," the XO answered as he punched the button.

"Hull stress is decreasing," a tech reported. "Monitoring all surfaces for changes in condition."

"All compartments are reporting green," another tech announced.

"So far, so good," the Captain muttered.
