Official Statement from the Committee on Foreign Entanglements, The Government of the Commonwealth of Six and a Half Islands
To: All interested members of the international community

The recently founded Commonwealth of Six and a Half Islands is a highly decentralised grouping of semi-autonomous islands in a remote part of the equatorial oceans, whose citizens aspire to create a happy, prosperous, anarcho-socialist ecotopia.

We now wish to extend our international relations somewhat, by inviting fellow governments to open formal diplomatic relations with us.

If you would like to set up an embassy with us, please tell us:

(bear in mind we are a small country and we think a maximum of 15 is easily sufficient)

(Note - we have an extremely low crime rate, but if you are, shall we say, not as democratic as us, you might want a small number of guards to keep an eye on the protesters your embassy is likely to attract. We will accept light weapons, but remember, you won't be allowed to shoot protesters like you do at home)
5. Vehicles you will be bringing:
(Note - cars are banned in the Commonwealth unless they are electric powered, on the other hand if your ambassador likes boats, this is a dream assignment)
6. Where you would like your embassy located:
(We do not have a designated capital city, and generally rotate the location of much government business around the islands. Our three main cities are New Stockport, the main city on the island of Malak (an industrial city with a large number of government agencies and an international Zeppelin Port), Marianna, the main city on the island of Esse (a more relaxed city, 2 hours by airship from New Stockport) and Rainbow Bay, the main city on the island of Zara (a historic city in a stunning location, but quite remote from the rest of the country - 6 hours by airship to New Stockport)

We are happy to reciprocate by setting up an embassy in your country. If your application is approved, we will find suitable accommodation for you, and inform you of its location.

Whilst we respect international conventions on diplomacy, we do not respect ambassadors, diplomatic staff or security staff violating Commonwealth Law, whether of a civil or criminal nature. In such cases guilty parties may be expelled, and compensation for their crimes will be sought from their originating governments.

Opponents Blast Government Foreign Policy

At Wednesday's meeting of the Committee for Foreign Affairs and Miscellaneous Happenings in Rainbow Bay, committee member Arran Homes laid into the "abject failure" of the government's recent diplomatic initiatives.
"I cannot believe no one wants to set up an embassy in the Commonwealth," he said, "apart from anything else our turquoise seas and golden beaches make it a dream posting for any ageing diplomat. It is clear the government has bungled its first attempt at foreign affairs."
Other members of the committee criticised the earlier majority vote that "the Commonwealth will talk to anyone, regardless of political allegiance" as dangerous and misguided. Others have already argued that allowing armed foreign security teams into the Commonwealth was "asking for trouble." The Secretariat of the Subcommittee for Foreign Entanglements responded that it had already been well established that numbers would be tightly controlled and only small arms would be permitted.
It is likely that the Committee for Coordinating Committees will need to step in to end what is turning into a highly politicised struggle for influence between the various committees and subcommittees charged with executing the Commonwealth's new foreign policy.

In other foreign policy news, the Island of Esse holds its third referendum on World Assembly membership today.

1. We would be delighted to enter into a non-aggression pact; we cannot think of any reasons for conflict between our nations, especially given your enlightened attitude to road traffic.
2. We are happy to discuss the implications of a free trade pact. However, we will not countenance entering into any agreement which restricts our ability to manage our economy to maintain social welfare or protect the environment. Secretariat Commissioner Nicola Ren of the Committee for Gross National Happiness is being briefed on your proposal at present, and will be happy to discuss this with you further.

We are pleased you have taken the trouble to retrofit your vehicles and appreciate your respect for our laws. Your helicopter will be granted special landing rights in a roped off area of the Plaza. We are happy to accede to your armament request for your guards, but would ask them not to brandish their weapons too much when not on embassy premises.

There is no problem in principle with your 1Be 32k Diplomatic Aircraft, however the longest landing strip on Malak is just 350m. If this is sufficient, then we will set aside hangar space upon your arrival. Seaplanes of any size can land in the designated area of Stockport Sound.

We will be delighted to open reciprocal relations in your nation; please send us word when this becomes convenient.

The newly re-designated Committee on Foreign Entanglements of the Government of the Commonwealth of Six and a Half Islands is delighted to welcome the like-minded nation of the USSB to our shores, and extends fraternal greetings to their ambassador and his staff.
The Committee admires the design of your Pyrford Coupes, and is confident they will be very well received on Zara. There is no problem with your helicopter, however, please obey all air-traffic control instructions, especially in the vicinity of the Mount Cerna Radio Telescope.
We have set aside a recently refurbished colonial-era building in Rainbow Bay, with views of the Bay itself, and the famous waterfall – 34 Cascade Boulevard, next to the Island Senate Building. Senate Security Officer Sara Walt will liaise with your staff as required, whilst your designated first point of contact with the national government will be Secretariat Member Otto Mann, who will meet you on arrival.

Garage space for your vehicles is available – you are welcome to supply your own fuel cells, or, if compatible, we would encourage you to support our own nascent fuel cell industry. We hope you find everything at the new embassy very much to your satisfaction.
Commissar Orkney Vans of the New Stockport People's Militia is responsible for overseeing Embassy security in New Stockport, and has just opened a new office for his team, also in Plaza Gardens, at number 7. Secretariat Member Tuvala Redd is charged with assisting you in all other regards, and will meet your party on arrival.
The Committee is taking steps to open a reciprocal embassy as requested.
