Beatusian Inaugural Address 2008 (MT, Open)

The new President of the Beatus, Jeff Melton, walked up to the podium, ready with his speech. He adjusted the microphone, and began to speak,

"My fellow citizens, we stand at a crossroads for our nation. There are many paths before us, and you have chosen me to decide which one we take. Some are short, clear and straight, and some are long, narrow, overgrown, and winding. Some of my opponents promoted the shorter clearer, easier paths, but as I'm sure many of you know, shortcuts rarely work, and often end up being longer and more difficult than the other way. I will chose one of the longer paths. We need to be focusing on where we will be in 20 years, not 20 days. Now, I'm not saying this is going to be easy, sacrifices will need to be made. There are a few things that I am going to acomplish in my first term in office. I am going to cut taxes. I'm going to make our nation safer, especially for the children. And I am going to restore our nation to it's greatness in the international community. I wish to thank you all for voting for me, and now I will answer any questions the from the press, both domestic or foreign.

Jeff scanned the room for questions.

A tall journalist stood up, ruffled his trench-coat, cleared his throat nd called out:

"President, what taxes do you plan cut? and by how much?"

"President, what taxes do you plan cut? and by how much?"

"Well, I plan to cut income taxes, by at least 5 percent. These people work hard for their money, and they should get to keep it!"

"Has there ever been a time in your life where a shortcut was the best option for you? Also, if in your presidency a shortcut would be the best case scenerio, would you consider to use a shortcut?'

A tall, somewhat ruffled looking journalist stood. He had had a long, rough flight in, a red eye from Vallingard to the capital of The Beatus just for this speech. Now, he spoke calmly, addressing the new President. "Mr. President, how do you intend to relate The Beatus to the rest of the world? Your nation's relative size and power not withholding, how will The Beatus face the world under your presidency?"

An elderman man, 87 years of age, was present from ViZion. Not only was he old, he looked old - a few white strands of crooked hair stood on either side of his above his ears on an otherwise bald head. His eyes were as grey as a stormy evenings sky, and his face was as crinckled as a raisen.

He looked like he could not even stand, but stand he did. "Sir..." he began, his index finger raised in the air and shook as badly as his voice, "What do you propose to do about the current situation arising against slavery and the like? Do you plan on joining in on this so-called 'crusade'? Likewise, what would you do should genocide breakout in nations around you?

Finally, what is your view on ViZion, and what will you do in regards to diplomatic and economic relations between our two nations?" he then began to sit down slowly as he held his back with one hand and supporting himself on the chairs armrest with the other.

"Has there ever been a time in your life where a shortcut was the best option for you? Also, if in your presidency a shortcut would be the best case scenerio, would you consider to use a shortcut?'

"Yes, there have been times in my life where the shortcut has been the best option, and I would use a shortcut if it was the best case. I simply stated that in most cases shortcuts can cause more trouble than they are worth, and we should be willing to do things the hard way if needed."

"We will seek peace from whoever is willing to offer it. Not to say that we will shy away from war, we will go to war, but it shall be a last resort, only after all other options have been exhausted."

"Slavery is always wrong. We would most likely not go as far as to join this, 'crusade,' as you put it, but we would work against it. Slavery is a major factor in undermining the global social-economical system. When nations rely on slavery for they're economies, placing so much on people who are forced to work, will ultimately result in the downfall of those nation's economies. I would like to quote the famous statesman and general Dwight D. Eisenhower, 'I would rather try to persuade a man to go along, because once I have persuaded him he will stick. If I scare him, he will stay just as long as he is scared, and then he is gone.' Once the slaves are gone, the economy will collapse, and the effects of the collapse ripple across the economies of the world. Such things put all of our economies in danger, and therefore are a threat to global peace and stability."

The old man managed to stand himself up again, albeit with a moments struggle against his own body. "Uhhh... sir..." he wiggled his finger in the air again, "What about the second part of my question - what do you plan to do with future relations with my nation of ViZion?" he asked in is shaky voice, then trying to sit down again without toppling over.

"Oh, I am sorry, got a little wrapped up in my speech against slavery there. I wish to strengthen relations with all nations. Also, are you okay sir, for it seems as if you are having difficulties. If there is anything I can do to help, just ask," Jeff said, with a hint of true caring in his voice.

"What is your foreign policy?"

"My foreign policy is peace first. I will attempt to make peace with any and all nations."
