National Progressives Seize Parliament
Salisbury, Atruria -- The results of the recent Parliamentary elections shook Salisbury and the entire Empire yesterday, as the disgruntled voters of Atruria revealed the vast disparity between the current government and their own preferences. Widely seen by foreign observers as the first fair and free election that Atruria has had, the parliamentary competition saw the National Progressive Congress, the primary opposition party of the Parliament, known for their liberal policies and pleas to do away with the monarchy and corruption throughout all levels of the government, today win the election by a vast majority. In the next parliament, the National Progressive Congress will hold 257 of the 400 seats of the unicameral legislative body, with the current majority party, the Imperial Monarchist Party maintaining only 83 seats, the Imperial Libertarian Party holding 34 seats, the Royal Socialist Front with 16 seats, 9 seats for the Royal Fascist Party, and the National Marxist Union retaining only a single seat.
The current majority party, the Imperial Monarchist Party, is particularly characterized by its insistence on a strong monarchy and the expansion of the Atrurian Empire, as well as generally conservative domestic economic and moral stances. It has been described in the past by detractors as "anachronistic," and a "reminder of the disenfranchisement of the majority of Atrurian subjects," a reference to their policy of refusing to give a say to those living in Atrurian colonies and imperial domains, as opposed to Atruria proper.
The vast majority of senior IMP members have been widely alleged to have been involved in financial and sexual scandals, government corruption, and nepotism. Though it has emerged the majority party in every parliament since the Parliament's inception in 1865, the Imperial Monarchist Party has been commonly accused of voter fraud and disenfranchisement.
Though the National Progressive Congress has won the election, worry persists that the IMP, the Imperial Government, and particularly the monarchy will not allow the NPC to savor their victory in the parliament and will somehow prevent them from gaining control of the government. This comes at a time where rumors of raids on NPC offices nationwide by the Office of General Inquiry are spreading.
