HuTianDi

Population: Estimated 1,002,000,000 (NSAD [nationstates AD] 2008.604 Census)

Name
The name of the country is officially the Dominion of Hu Tian Di. It is commonly called just Hu Tian Di around the world. Its official Abbreviation is HTD. Its name stems from the local language, Hua yu, rather than the universal standard language (also spoken in the country as a second language). The three words specifically meaning between, heaven earth (乎天地). Thus it means between heaven and earth. In the local language the people are called tian di ren (天地人) however since this actually means people of tian di it presents a uncomfortable phrase for people commonly adding –ian, -an, or –ish to a name. Thus the government has come up with a standard adjective for the people of the nation. This name is Dian (pronounced De-ans).

History
The nation of hu Tian Di was originally a colony founded in the 1400s by the Chinese treasure fleet in the Pacific Ocean. While not an official colony of China, it was still lead by the Chinese. The specific group from the fleet was separated from the fleet by a storm. The group itself had few females onboard but there was a significant native population on the islands. The soldiers, with superior weapons and technology took over the islands in the area surrounding their landing. After a series of battles all the islands were subjugated and its people enslaved, some of them willingly, by these soldiers.
The soldiers took wives among the native population and introduced Chinese Culture and learning to the islands. Within the first years of occupation the native population were forced to construct towns in the traditional Chinese style. This first generation were treated relatively inhumanly compared to the later mix blooded descendants of these soldiers. However, this treatment also resulted in massive growth. The largest and main island was found to be rich is resources including metals. With these supplies the Islands were transformed into a traditional Chinese culture. This Chinese culture dominated. With this culture also came the advent of Philosophy, learning, technology, and imperialism. The philosophy of the society quickly diverted from Chinese norms as independent thought coexisted with harmonious thought in a harmonious manner between the opposing Chinese and greek world views.
In AD 1530 the people of the islands expanded further into other areas, specifically the surrounding islands. This was done with the revived art of junk building. Many of these nations were filled with primitive trips easily subjugated by the soldiers experienced in Chinese martial arts and the advanced gunpowder based weaponry.

Even with this however the inquisitive minds created by the advent of this new worldview spurred on the advancement of knowledge. With this schools were set up and with them observatories, laboratories, and other structures instrumental to the development of technology. With these the introduction and development of models abandoned by the Chinese after their discovery (such as the repetition of comets) were further developed resulting in such things as a basic atomic theory, revolutionary in the fact that the people viewed things as continuous substances in their world view, and a heliocentric theory were developed. These developments soon brought the nation in line with European advances in these fields by the year 1650. However, one thing that was not shared was expansion fever. Though imperialist, the nation did little to expand beyond the islands though it knew of a large eastern landmass by early map makers. It also did little to expand east where the Chinese ruled.
Over the next 100 years technology was further refined and expansion stopped as HuTianDi expanded roughly to its current size. Spies located in China and other asian countries showed that a mysterious people group with exprodinarily pale skin were making colonies and subjugating people with gunpowder weapons. From the descriptions of these people technologies had to be developed. These people were a little behind the technology of the islands, but a significant lead needed to be achieved. With this new weapons such as rifled cannons and iron plated sailing ships, an Idea taken from Koreans, were developed and put to use.

The First European arrivals would be from England in the form of the East India company. These ships were attacked and all but one destroyed. This one ship returned to England where the defeat of the most powerful maritime nation by some barbaric fleet caused an uproar and caused an informal war between England and Hu tian Di. The war was entirely a naval war where the brittish sent a fleet of its strongest ships to the islands. The islands were caught relatively off guard with its outer islands falling quickly. These islands had no military detachment. The fleet soon came is Sun Island. On this island was a small military outpost. The fleet attacked but was initially repulsed when it was shocked to find that the outpost could target the ships at a range several times that capable of the fleet resulting in minor loses. The ships soon after were attacked from the north by a fleet armed with the name weaponry. With the superior range of these naval units the fleet was defeated and sent into retreat.

A year later in 1782 a single ship came. From this ship came emissaries bearing a message of peace. The following negotiations were hard but after each side had several people learn the languages involved (the British also pulled some diplomats out of china) peace was achieved allowing both parties equal trading rights in their respective nations. The British, having been defeated by Hu Tian Di, also discouraged attack by other nations.
For the next 60 years a period of stagnation occurred under ruler Dai Liu. During this period the other nations in the world were able to catch up technologically. It was the lowest point in the history of the nation. However, it was resolved with the creation of a republic and the exiling of the emperor to China. With the world playingfield evened the nation now had to struggle to keep up with the rapidly advancing Europeans. Except in the area of Iron Covered Ships the nation now lagged behind in most areas of technological advance and the new rulers needed to badly start a new technological revolution.

The technological revolution started quickly. The new democratic government brought in experts from around the world. However, the development itself came from the HTD students taught by these people. These students independently developed breech loading weapons, steam driven ships and other technologies already developed in Europe. With this also came much nationalism, and while not accompanied by the colonial expansion of western nations the nation still created a large and modern army and one of the most advanced navies in the world. The nation quickly became a dominant nation in Pacific diplomacy, but it was mostly an isolationist nation like the United States as its continual and rapid economic and military growth continued.
The nation, in its isolationism, was able to stay neutral in the Great war and continued to prosper in it. The nation was able to trade with all parties in the war and its ships were neutral, protected by the continual strength of the HTD Fleet. The nation, with its near self sufficiency, was able to withstand the great depression with a minor recession.

In accordance with its neutral policy the nation was able to trade both with Japan and with China for weapons. However, the nation also had relative little involvement in the war. Its continual progress both in new technologies such as aircraft and existing technologies allowed the nation to have a significant number of battleships and carriers that deterred anything larger than a small skirmish between the Empire of Japan and the Dominion of Hu Tian Di.
The nation continued to progress rapidly after world war two establishing better relation with Japan and America. However, its neutrality ended when the republican government was replaced with a more power-hungry communist government. The nation fell back into a state like other European nations, past its first golden age as its technological progression slowed and nations grew. However, still in 1998 the nation created a complete military makeover continuing to this day equipping the armed forces with some of the most advanced equipment in the world.

In 2007 a great civil war broke out as the large fundamentalist Christian division within the nation. This fundamentalist Christian division came from the missionary work of the Asian Missionary Fund. The missionaries sent by the group were fundamentalist, conservative, Protestant Christians. These missionaries were able to convert a great many people from the variants of Buddhism and Confucianism and Taoism to Fundamentalist Christianity. The hidden group was violently oppressed by the people in Charge. However, soon this violent treatment also caused further economic damage and the military revolted and restored the Government to a democracy dominated by fundamentalist Christians with a minority of Confucian remnants.

Geography
The nation of hu tian di covers an area about 2000 km x 1250 km (around 250,000 km^2 is land). The nation radiates from a small cluster of islands located in the central of the nation. The islands get smaller and smaller as the distance from the center increases. These islands labeled the “Hu Tian Di Archipelago” are a geologic anomaly. Their method of creation is unknown as the islands are both rich is Iron, more so then the islands of Japan. The islands no doubt exist and will remain a geologic anomaly. Other than that, however, the islands are entirely normal. Their climate depends on the latitude and the size of the islands. The rains come according to a monsoon type repetition with varying amounts of rain depending on the state of the winds. There are heavy rains in the winter and less rains in the summer. Most of the islands are forested with limited resources but the larger are somewhat mountainous and heavily forested. The islands also suffer frequent typhoons.

The islands are mostly volcanic and at several islands, including the main island, have active volcanoes. Many islands are dormant but most still erupt from time. The islands continue to Grow and at time new islands arrive out of the ocean forming more land for the nation of hu Tian Di.

Demography

The people of HuTianDi are mostly of mixed Polynesian and Asian Decent. These people make up around 80% of the population in the nation. The largest minority group are Asians from the mainland. This accounts for another 10% of the population, of which half are Chinese. The remaining 10% account for the small minority groups of people of African and European decent as well as a very small percentage of native people (<0.1%). The people mostly live in the large islands, many of which come close to 70% Urbanization. This accounts for around 80% of the people. The remaining 20% live on the outlying islands. Many of these are agricultural islands but some islands form the small “rural” towns of the nation.

There is an increasing trend in immigration causing the rapid growth of the nation. While a majority are local born, the rate of increase for foreign born residents is achieving a record high as Job opening and an immigration scheme comparable to that of Canada has allowed many people entry into the nation. By the time the population of the country reaches 1 billion it is expected that the nation will have around 75% of the population coming from the mixed decent of the original Chinese and residents with 25% of people people immigrants coming from other nations. Many of these people are asian but there will be some more people of White or African decent but at current rates it is projected that such people will account for a lower percentage of the population than today.

The government recognizes two national languages. One is a variant of mandarin, understandable my mainlanders but still fairly changed, with the simplified character set. The government is currently teaching standard mandarin as the primary language and it is expected that soon the entirety of the people will speak mainland mandarin instead of the dialect now spoken. While this has caused much controversy it has been accepted because it is known that it will be more beneficial in the long run. The second national language is the International Standard Language. This language, formerly known, and still colloquially known as English has been the language of trade since first contact with the Europeans and it is still used as the secondary language as the ISL gains more acceptance throughout the world. All schools much teach this language “once students gain an acceptable proficiency in Hua Yu.” Thus with that being said all people from 21-death usually are able to speak proper ISL with American Grammar. There are several other minority languages but these are only spoken by a few and other foreign languages have gained little acceptance.

The country is almost entirely populated by people with a fundamentalist Protestant affiliation. These people make up about 70% of the population. Other religions include Traditional Chinese religions at 10% and other (consisting of Roman Catholic, Muslim, hindu and other) at 5% the rest claim to no religion (though the government classifies atheism as a religion). Fundimnentalist Christianity has permiated almost every aspect of the nation. It thus has allowed the nation to lead in creationism in a World hostile to such a theory. However, this also means that outside HuTIanDi many scientists in various fields have little world credit though they are able to adequately defend their theories of world creation.

Economy

The Economy of HTD started with the coming of Chinese ships. The Chinese, already ahead of the world by at least one hundred years, introduced numerous aspects of an economy not present in the islands. The Chinese introduced such things as a monetary system and set measurements. The things introduced by the Chinese soon created a sustainable market economy which has continued to this day.

In the 17-1800s a rapid increase in industry, akin to an industrial revolution, occurred. It was ahead of other nations in Europe and contributed to the independence is the islands during the entirety of its modern history. This rapid expansion in industry allowed export to be a viable market option to countries such as England where the goods of hutiandi circulated along with Chinese wares in the European marketplace.

Today the economy is recovering from the dictatorship which was recently removed from power. The economy still, and will continue to be based on military technologies. Military factories are essential to the national economy and to the continued safety of the nation and the Government has ruled its protection under a government run company called “Bai Engineering.” Bai engineering is the foremost employer in the nation. It produces many products from MP3 players to the latest tank. The company makes up around 36% of the national GDP. The company has been controlling a declining share of the economy since the expulsion of the dictatorship and the reintroduction of a free market system.

In recent years Bai Engineering, which once used to control 90% of the economy, has grown greatly. However, with the rapid increase in population the growth of the company has not been sufficient to take up all of the jobs in the nation as it once did. Thus the company’s grip on the economy, with the government’s allowance, has shrunk to 1/3 of it once was. However, the company is still the largest in the nation and will most likely be in the foreseeable future.

The Government has been working of diversifying its economy. The rapid expansion of the nation has allowed a vast increase in the number of service industry jobs. This increase in Service Industry Jobs corresponds to the greater number of people operating independent businesses and foreign corporations opening offices in the borders of HuTianDI. In the last several years the amount of service industry employed increased to around 73% from 45% during the old government. This rise also corresponds to the increase in HuTianDi economic power and GDP.

Several major companies from numerous countries are also developing the large, extensive oil fields discovered recently in the eastern sector of the HuTianDi Archipelago. It is expected that this discover will provide a much needed boost to the economy and will further spur on HuTianDi’s economic development.

The HuTianDi Currency is called the Heavenly Dollar, or Tian Yuan in the local language. It is a fairly strong currency when compared against the Universal Standard Dollar. The currency has little reserves located within foreign countries. However, it is the main currency used in the Islands of HuTianDi and as such it is greatly important both to the nation as a sense of pride and as a source of income as other countries have to exchange their currency upon entering the country for business or tourism. At 2008.604 the exchange rate was 1HD = $1.1780. The HD has relative strength against the USD used by many countries and this exchange is used by the HTD government to acquire goods at a relative lower cost.

The Islands of HTD lack any major farm land. Several large, major islands are set aside for this purpose but they do not provide enough for the whole population of HuTianDi. Thus the primary import of the nation is Food adding greatly to the trade deficit. While this trade deficit, at the time may show a increase in economic power, it is something that the government wishes to reduce but that too seems to be an impossibility with there not being enough food supplies for self sufficiency greater than a period of four years.

Government]

HuTianDi is a Constitutional Monarchy. The Emperor is hereditary and still carries little political power other than the influence he carries with the people. The government itself is a parliamentary form of government. There are three sectors to the parliament , the Monarch, The Senate, and the house of Commons. The government is organized by a constitution passed in 1950 by popular demand.

The Monarch is always male, and is hereditary. The Monarch is selected by the previous monarch, the decision on the monarch can be over ruled by the other two branches of Government with a 4/5 majority ruling however, in the event that no other suitable person is available the original choice of the monarch is retained. The monarch has only limited power in the government. The other two houses may call for the monarch, or his representative in the case that he is unable to be reached, to make a decision on his own will. However, this is rarely done. The Monarch may also increase the number of senators by ten if he so wishes for a session of parliament.

The Senate is a group of people appointed by the monarch. There are 5 people from each province, or two people from each territory appointed by the King. The Senators must own at least 10,000 HD in the province or territory in which they reside. The senators serve a maximum of 75 years in office and can before the term is up or miss three consecutive meetings in parliament.

The house of commons is a body of 300 officers elected by the people who are age 21 and over. The 300 people are divided into regions by population. There is no difference between territory and province here. These people are commonly called “officers of Parliament (OFs)” Each officer has a term of five years.

The Provincial and Territorial parliaments are also similarly organized with a representative acting for the monarch.

The parliament operates with at least 30 members as a quorum for the House of commons and fifteen for the senate. The session is presided over by a Speaker, known as a Speaker of the Nation. The Speaker judges which side is the majority by voice votes. However, a traditional count can be demanded by at least three people in the senate of five in the H of C. In the event of a tie the Speaker may vote.

The members of parliament has freedom of speech in their deliberations and debates. No one may be questioned for anything said outside of parliament (though their reputation might be ruined) members may also be removed by vote from the people (at least officers in the house of commons) if they are found to be morally incorrect.

The national parliament controls many national features such as tariffs, income tax, health care, postal service, the census, the military, navigation and shipping, currency, banking, weights and measures, bankruptcy, copyrights, patents, and naturalization. The Local government controls education (as long as it conforms to national standards, each area is given freedom in the management of a school district), local officers, police, roadways and other transport (with the exception of airports), local taxes, and other matters on the local level.

International Relations

The Nation of hu tian Di has little external relations. It has an ongoing diplomatic exchange program but few nations have taken any major interest in Hu Tian Di due to its mostly isolationist tendencies.

Education

The Dominion of hu Tian Di has a public education system. It has a literacy rate of 98% and has mandatory classes until the age of 18. The Public education system differs from all other nations in that it is founded on dispensationalist, fundamentalist, conservative, protestant Christian Principles. As Such the schools teach creationism along wide with evolution (for working knowledge in the world) and uses books from The University of Hu Tian Di, a conservative Christian University like that of bob Jones in America.

The schools each two languages, standard mandarin and the Universal Standard language. The learning of these two languages starts at the home and continues as a child enters mandatory schooling at the age of 4. The Asian philosophy that permeates the country, however, also creates a large market for tutoring and extracurricular activities. Thus schooling the both an effort by the government and the parent in an increasingly competitive country. Foreign students often fail quickly due to the extra workload imposed by the government and peer pressure

OOC: I don't get how a company could dominate 90% of a nation's economy... is there no agriculture or services in the entire nation?

OOC: --> refering to industrial sector... though technically as a conglomerate and a government controlled company then collective farms could explain "economy" whichever you like better....
