The Snowball Rolls On...

Cotland
03-06-2008, 17:10
It promised to be another one of the warm beautiful days in Eeobroht, the capital city of Cotland. The sun was starting to rise above the Hills of Eeob that marked the capital's eastern edge, and a gentle breeze was flowing through the streets and high-rises of the capital. The city of fifty-seven million had yet to fully awaken from its gentle rest, save for a few early birds on their way to work or the 4 000-strong garrison in the Citadel, many of whom were already well underway on their early morning exercise run through the city.

It was to this sleeping city that His Majesty King Haakon VIII, by the Grace of God Monarch of Cotland, Protector of the Weak, Defender of the Faith, Supreme Warlord of the Realm, Master of the North, Conqueror of Korangar, and a thousand other fancy titles would soon declare that His Realm and its five and a half billion subjects would no longer feel bound by the articles and rules of the Alliance for the Preservation of Civilization. The Realm had joined this alliance when the dark clouds of Gholgothic invasion loomed over Haven, mostly out of fear for being caught in the crossfire when hostilities began. Fortunately, the invasion and subsequent war never ensued, and the Realm soon found itself a member of the far smaller, but far more capable Royal Georgian League, where it joined forces with Praetonia and Clandonia. It wasn't long after this that APOC began collapsing, starting with the Questerians and the Questerian Commonwealth ceeding from APOC, followed not long after by several other nations, including Clandonia. The snowball had started rolling, and it was going to get bigger.

At exactly 10:30 Kingston Mean Time, which translated to 08:00 Eeobroht Time, King Haakon addressed his subjects through the television and radio, as well as through live feeds over the Internet. The speech was short but informative, wherein the King informed the people that he felt it his duty to inform the populace that the Realm's involvement in APOC was no longer beneficial to the interests of the Realm, and that he with the support of the Cabinet of Ministers had decided to cease the Realm's involvement in APOC. He maintained that the Realm's relations with the other nationss that had been and still were members of APOC were still good and prosperous, and that the Realm's leaving APOC should have very little if any influence on the foreign affairs of the Realm, other than that the Realm withdrew its military forces from APOC nations and commands, and requested that foreign APOC forces stationed in Cotland or Cottish holdings withdraw their forces immediately.

"My Cabinet," The King said, "Continues to conduct its foreign affairs with the best interests of the Realm and its population as its highest priority. There is no greater priority."

As the King concluded the address, he declared that the Realm would continue its involvement with the Royal Georgian League as its principal foreign affairs alliance, but that the Realm would be open to joining other alliances if it suited the best interests of the Realm.

The reception of the address was mixed. Some applauded the move by the government, saying that the Realm never really had any need to be in APOC in the first place, while others were more sceptical, fearing that the Realm's leaving APOC would have a negative effect on relations with other countries. Whether or not this would happen would be revealed with time. One thing every analyst and political editor agreed upon though was that with first Clandonia and now Cotland leaving APOC, two of the three nation-states in the Royal Georgian League had left APOC with Praetonia being the only member still in both alliances.
