Not so long ago, Zinaire was a peaceful nation ready for anything. Now it appears that "anything" may be coming sooner than expected. Zinaire, and the region of the New Caribbean (http://wikistates.outwardhosting.com/wiki/New_Caribbean) as a whole, has been facing increasing hostility from the notorious nation of Fozcria and their allies.
Now Zinairian intelligence agencies are warning of Interimo-sponsored terrorist attack against governmental symbols such as National Plaza in the heart of Zinaire City (http://wikistates.outwardhosting.com/wiki/Zinaire_City). This has led to a rapid, and somewhat controversial, increase in security measures. There are now military checkpoints, run by the army's (http://wikistates.outwardhosting.com/wiki/Zinairian_Army) Diplomatic Defense Division (originally established to protect Zinairian diplomats abroad, but it now carries out a wide variety of VIP protection duties). The relatively lightly armed troops, carrying only P90 personal defense weapons and the coordinated Five-Seven pistols, have blocked the street with their Panthers (http://www.army-technology.com/projects/future/), allowing only some vehicles to pass and only after they, and their passengers, have been extensively searched.
Land Rover Defenders belonging to the ZNPD (http://wikistates.outwardhosting.com/wiki/ZNPD) also patrol and line the street, the officers assigned to them leaning on the hoods for hours on end. At all times, a ZNPD bomb squad vehicle is also present both as a deterrent and as a countermeasure. Each vehicle can expect a twelve hour day and even the ZNPD is not exempt from being searched at the military checkpoints.
If one were to look up, he would find himself staring down the barrel of at least one sniper rifle. Both ZNPD and army Tactical Operations Division snipers are stationed on the roofs of National Plaza. Police snipers carry the deadly accurate PSG-1 and those from the army carry the truly fearsome Barrett M82. One would also notice that the roofs, usually topped with helicopters for the transport of important officials, are bare, ready for support from either the military or the ZNPD.
Public response has been extremely mixed. Some are reassured by the increased military presence in this tense time, but others feel they are being muscled out of representation. The blockades of National Plaza, to some, feel like blockades keeping the people out of the government. Others are generally fearful of the heavily armed troops in the middle of the busy city. The government has only offered one statement regarding the blockades and increased security: "Better denied than dead."
