Exerpt from Shattered Union by LT. J.G Brian Engel taken, with premission, from the Mereshkan Archives
What I remeber about the fall of the union was... how quiet it was. Over the course of a decade, the Union slowly shifted its policies, a little more agressive here, a little more opressive there, the civies never knew a thing about what was happening. But the military, the military was where the change was really taking place. The entire focus of the Imperialists was controlling the Union's main stabilizing element, the military. With that under their sway, slow governmental change could become radical destabilization overnight. Of course we knew it was happening, on occasion Officers and even NCOs would dissapear, all records erased, no one admitting they even existed. And then the real change hit. Within seven years, most command positions were filled with those loyal to the Imperialists, and when word got out, a massive protest sprung up in Harrison Square. We got our orders, break up the riot using any ammount of force neccisary, obviously standing for lethal force. Did we have any covictions, any silent traitorus thoughts? Maybe, did we say anything? Np, not a word, not when we openly slaughtered several thousand civies, and not when we marched on a protesting sneate and settled who ruled the Union once and for all. Not a word.

"Go." A pound of breach charges turned a elegant oak door into a storm of splinters and torn bronze hinges, a flash bang lit the room up like a roman candle. Four civil protection units stormed the room, Westchester SAP-74's at the ready, followed by the squad leader. "Frak, nothin' here" Grunted a CP. "Sarge, whadda we do?" Sergeant Brian Gordon surveyed the room. The tip has to be right, he has to be here... "Search the room." He barked. "Glazers only." The CPs groaned as they switched clips from shockers to glazers, shockers had a nasty tendency to fry the targets nervous system, while glazer encased them in a wad of sticky gel. The CPs spread out, the room was elegantly furnished, typical of the Winchester corporation, and split into several segments that came close to violating several regulations. "Got somefin' " Brian rounded ther corner to find his men getting itchy trigger fingers over someone in a chair. He waved his hand down, then moved forward to preform the arrest. Drawing his Westchesters PP-60 and aiming it at the subjects head, he lightly tapped him and waitied for him to turn around. No response, brian felt his anger start to rise, "Incompetent Little snot...." He muttered. "Hands up!" No reply again, he snatched the back of the chair and spun it around, sitting in it was the body of Division chief Tyler Irons with a note taped to his chest. Not this time sarge... it was only then he heard the barley audible beeping of a bomb. "Shit!" He scrambled back and pitched over a work station. "Frakker had a bomb, aus aus!!" Brian dived for the window in a futile attempt at escaping, at the sixth story with a bomb ticking behind him, he didn't have a chance. The bomb went off, the shockwave hurling him out the window into the waiting pavement below. The world met him in a crimson torrent, and before the blackness could claim him, a single thought echoed through his mind. Just a stupid mistake, a stupid mistake...

William Jefferson had heard the explosion and quickly ran out from the coffee shop he was in, almost forgetting to pay the bill. He wore a long brown trenchcoat and black boots, within his coat a CPA badge could be seen, its little hammer and sickle shined lightly, it hadn't been cleaned in a while. He was armed with a pistol he had bought, Union design. The WPR wouldn't be sending in any heavy equipment unless things really heated up. He began his first mission, light propaganda. William had seen the way this country was starting to fall apart, there were even lines of poor starting to funnel to find jobs. This is where his tounge would strike the hearts of minds of the people, here is where he would bring arms against the Imperial goverment. Jefferson soon found his boots next to one line, looking at the poor bastards, they all looked sick...hungry, while just on the other side of the street was a utopia of stores and over privalged civilians, they payed no heed to there fellow comrades. William Jefferson was a kind but cold man, his love turning to hate instantly, but he didn't show it. The people of this country needed change, whether it would be peacful or violent. William found a box, rather heavy enough to support his own weight, he didn't plan on falling and making a fool of himelf. He quickly stepped up, up above the poor men, women, and few children. His voice quickly beckoned to them, snapping there heads in his direction " Can't you see what the Imperialst bastards are doing to you!, my freinds and brothers why must we squabble for scraps while the rich spit upon us!!!" he pointed to a dirty child " Why must he go through his life in shame and filth, it is not you who should be paying with your blood and sweat for working your backs away, the Imperialists are draining you like lemons for the juicer." he took a breath " Our rags symbolise the Imperialsts hold over us, should we not burn away the chains of Imperialsm and endourse our futures, our children's futures, death or change I say!" William's eyes darted through the lines, and his voice lowered slightly " If you want change, meet me at harbor street, in the warhouse at 8:00 P.M., only then can we decide for a brighter future comrades." He strode off back into the crowds, heading back to the coffee shop, his eyes looked behind him and in front.

Avuora Sekeyu was dealing with a rather belligerent customer who wanted a refund on a nano run coffee machine that had broken. "Look sir," He said patiently in his heavy Mereshkan accent, which was like Japanese but slightly more musical, "It says right on the warranty, we don't refund tampered with material. You admited to opening the nano storage unit, 'to see what made it tick'. Doing so let out the nanos, which we specifically told you not to do. The AI we have inside of them is very limited. They would not be able to cope with the drastic environmental change, and would perdorm what they were programmed to, which is heat coffee, on the nearest thing possible. In this case your cat." Seeing that he had lost the customer a ways back, he sighed. "Look, I understand you want compensation for the dead cat, but its not my fault. I told you not to screw with it."
The customer seemed about to complain when the sound of a massive explosion was heard. Avuora swore in his native tounge, and instinctively went for his katana, before realising he didn't have it. The Union wouldn't let civilians carry even archaic weaponry these days. He shook his head. The histories said that back in the days of Emperess Saya and Shogun Edward, two big heroes in Mereshkan culture, that the Union was a great country, all peace and helping out. Such a change was to be lamented. The customer had dissapeared at the sound of the explosion, and Avuora ran outside. There was a huge building on fire, yet no sign of whom perpetrated the deed. Standing on a box was what looked like the Russians back in the old days. He was addressing a large crowd, telling them how oppresive the government was, and how they shouldn't be so poor. He does have a point Avuora thought, looking around at the poverty around. He started at him mentioning the warehouse at eight. He shook his head. Idiot. You never let the government, especielly a government like the Union had, know where the meetings were. The army'll be all over this guy. Still, it bore investigating. The Emperor would surely want to know about that.

William was at the warehouse, which he had rigged with explosives should something go wrong. He waited out in the front, with his coat up over his neck to keep the chill off, he fingered his Union pistol. A boy was walking past him, very young he thought. He tapped the boy on his shoulder and gave him a stack of papers " Here, ill give you twenty if you put these up all over the place." The little boy was stunned by the money, his dirty hands reached for it, but William pulled it back" Only after you do it..." The little boy ran full speed, not knowing or understanding what was in his hands. Posters showing a worker ripping off his chains as blood ran down his scars, A man holding up a weapon with a red star in the background. He pulled out a small screen which was linked to a security camera at the warehouse, when people show up, he would know. William began walking down the street, without looking he dropped some cards, these cards said UPR (United Proletariat Revolution) it showed a Union civilian waving a red version of the Union flag.

"Damn frakkin' Reds. Thought the fall of the great wall was the end of 'em." Not many of the men understood that the fall of the Great Wall marked the end of the second cold war, but they grunted in reply. "Squads two and four, get into sniper position and lay down a static blanket. The rest of you, on me." The snipers moved off to carry out there orders while the main squad focused on the warehouse. "Everyone, stay frosty an make sure the reds don't have anything up there sleves, don't get to jumpy on the gun till we get orders from Mister Death." A couple soldiers chuckled at the name, any squad, military or CP, commanded by Patrick Dougan often had a 100% success rate. "Brewer here, we're in position." The CP leader noded. "Acknowledged, awaiting confirmation." CP leader Anderson flicked through the various command channels, then selected the proper codes. "Colonel Dougan, we're ready."
Lucky's Bar, near Lawrence MCRD.
"....and thats how we got out of many a-fix." The gravel voice of the old man told all, a man who'd seen enough and done enough. Patrick whistled. "Really now?" The old man laughed. "Sure, ya just gotta know your friends, they'll get ye outta any fix." The conversation was interupted by Patrick's earpiece buzzing in his ear. "Hold on Frank, Dougan here. You have premission to proceed CP Anderson, I will be arriving shortly to oversee opperations." Patrick slid his chair back and pressed on a battered hat. "See you later Mister Green." The door swung open onto a cold night, one with the promise of rain. Frank sighed and sank back into his chair. "Been a while since I've seen dat spunk..." He muttered to himself. He grabbed the nearest bottle and took a deep swill of it. "But y'all never leave me, will ya?"

A group of roughly two hundred people had assembled at the entrance of the warehouse, they were at the front, some coughing. William Jefferson returnd and payed the child his twenty. He arrived at the front of the warehous which was rusted pretty good. William Jefferson stood in front of the door and then opened it as all the people began to pour into the warehouse. WPR agents had pre-fixed the inside of the warehouse, inside were five crates literally filled with Kashism style communist reading material, two more crates with Renegade Assault rifles( Basically a futuristic AK-47 that fires railgun rounds.) The World Proletariat Revolution had been the leading Communist force in this time of age. There were various other crates, containing food and medical supplies. William entered the place, there were small pots cooking food, rather primitive slum. Soon there were small circles of people as William was educating them on communism and its purpose of helping them break free. His hands moved often as he spoke, and he spoke loud at times and softly at others. Some people huddled over barrel fires, reading the World Manifesto(Kashism) which contained a mix of Leninism, Moaism, Stalinism and Marx which was created by Kash Wilson as the new communism. These people had been brought to what to them seemed like paradise, in reality it wasn't really much at all. William Jefferson was not aware of the snipers, but he expected that he could be followed. Even the weapons were coverd in food and medical supplies. The huddled masses read, while others read aloud for the illiterate. William smiled, he seemed like the modern Lenin standing on yet another crate of potatoes.

Avuora sighed at the sight of all the posters around. This guy really was an idiot. Was he even aware that whomever hung up those posters was as good as dead? Well, he might as well check it out, but he was leaving at the first shot.He jogged to the warehouse, where it appeared everything was still peaceful. However, if that guy continued to talk about how the Union had a faulty government, it wouldn't be for long. That, and he suspected that there were weapons stored in the boxes. Wouldn't do any good against snipers, or Special Forces.

William continued his speech, he had them under his spell. He was now walking around, checking on little pockets of his new "students". They were either warming themselves by the fire, eating, or reading and preaching the World Manifesto. At this point everyone of them were willing to join this cause, here they found the United Proletariat Revolution. " Small stuff...but its a start" he told himself. William needed action more than anything else, perhahps some kidnappings, maybe something else. Information wasn't very easy to come by, and a police man had much more use than most expected. It had been rather tiring work, the speech was the most important, the smaller group chats were easy pie for him. William Jefferson was a man of his word, and he intended on getting the job done, only death could take him from it.

Patrick arrived to hear the shouts of agreement and joy from the warehouse. Reds, never know when to give up.... He quickly stepped into the shadows, pulling his collar up in a somewhat useful attempt to blend into the grime and blackness of the alleyway. He raised the right side of his jacket higher, a transmitter hidden within. "COlonel Dougan here, CP Anderson, give me a sit-rep." The line crackled with static before coming back to life. "Squads two and four in sniping position, we're on the second floor of the red brick building to the right of the warehouse." Patrick scanned the skyline, straining to see where his men might have hidden themselves. Sure enough, several dark forms were huddled near a window. "Lethal force has been authorized, squad two, load up with HE rounds and get those crates, most likely usin' food as cover for weapons. Squad four, get ready to lay down supression fire. Squads one and three, load up your 'nade launchers with frags and incindiaries, fire when squad two opens up on the cases. In the mean time, wait for my-" it was only then he noticed someone else had ducked into the alleyway with him. "Unknown contact, moving to enage" He whispered. He drew his SAP-56 and drew slowly closer to the unidentified person. "You're not supposed to be here." He hissed. Still aiming his pistol at the unidentified person's head, he brought the transmitter closer to his mouth. "Give those reds hell boys." The flat crack of Projectile sniper rounds mixed with the high whines of the rail rifles, the soft whump of the launchers became the bass to the chaotic symphony of war.

Body's and blood filled the warhouse and men, women and children were blow away by deadly force and accuracy. Screams and yells for help aroused. William Jefferson drew his pistol and ducked, he quickly fired two shots at a dark area, not sure where the enemy was. He bashed open one of the crates and weapons spilled out " Grab em, grab the weapons, defend yourselfs!" People hungerly grabbed the weapons, not knowing how to use them, they simply pulled the trigger and aimed it in the direction of the enemy. the greenish blue railgun rifles fired (think of the ammunition from the Moviet "Eraser".) A explosion rocked, knocking William to the ground, his ears went into a wining pitch until he came back to reality, he joined some of the others, firing.

People poured out of the building, armed insurgents and the like. Jefferson fell down and quickly ran out and into the streets, his heart thumping full speed as he ran. He quickly hit the detonating, the huge thud sound was heard and the building quaked as the explosion rippled through the neighborhood, shattering windows and setting off alarms. What was left were bodys and debry, scatterd across the streets, empty magazines, and food. William might have failed, but it was also a success, the survivors now knew that there goverment would kill people who didn't agree with them, William would re-rally them at a later point, the location would be held secret this time.

He threw Avuora to the ground a split second before he hit the dirt, hot shrapnel and wood hissed through the air, cleaving through people and buildings alike. "Scheisse! Dammit!" He franticly activated his transmitter. "Squad, come in!" The transmitter hissed into ominous silence before a reply came back." Squad two here, CP Clark in charge, we're good, so's squad four, we were far enough from the blast, just rattled our nerves. Most of the survivors got out of the warehouse before it went up." Patrick grunted. "Anderson, come in." Silence. "Squad one and three, respond." More silence. "Dammit!" The transmitter crackled back to life, an out of breath and strained voice on the other end. "CP Holt here, acting commander of squad three. Blast shredded our building, squad two is entirley down, CP leader Anderson took alot of flak but is still mobile. Three is in bad shape, if they start hunting us sir..." Patrick cut him off. "Everyone will have heard the blast, no better way to get back up then make something go boom, hold position until medics arrive, you did a good job, even if things didn't go as planned." A mufled groan came over the other end. "...Gettin' kinda dark.." The transmitter hissed into silence. "Fucking reds..." Patrick muttered.

He fingered his pistol as he waved the police officer down.

"We've had orders to treat it like a 'disobediant child' and only give it a light spanking here and there. They can't really marshall a large force unless they have some experienced tacticians or.. soldiers....." He snapped his fingers. "Not that I'm saying I will, but theres this guy I know at Lucky's bar, he's been talking about some mutal friends of his who could use the help of a guy like me or.... you?" He raised his eyebrow. "You carry yourself like a soldier, you ever served in the military?"

Suppose I'll talk your ear off about the empress later, for now, I've heard rumors of an increase in agressivness towards Mereshka, not an all out war, but prep for one, this would make a perfect backdrop for the rebellion, with men and material being drawn elsewhere, we can finaly step out of the shadows." He took a cautious glance around the room. "Most of the rebel leaders are actually high ranking generals in the military, and most of there men are loyal to the old Union. Now once it has been confirmed that an increase in activity away from Arkheim, then the rebellion will seize the city. Hopefully." He seemed to relax after having said that. "And to answer your question, Empress Saya was beautiful, she had many potential suitors, one of whom was a particular Irishman with a similar firery temper. Didn't work out between them."

Unless you mean to tell me I should let my country be invaded?" He looked like he wished as though he had his katana.

"And really, what is a Mereshkan soldier without his Katana?" He tossed a sheated Katana towards Avuora, the latin words Oderint dum metuant (let them hate as long as they fear) was engraved on the sheath, as well as a battered rendition of an old Union insignia. The Emperor is the prime ruler, and below him is a council of Shoguns, which serves to keep him in line. Should he get to power happy, theres usually a revolution. Sure, it has its drawback. But, the almost continuos clan wars serve to keep the military well trained." Frank flipped a small device onto the table then activated it, a map of downtown Arkheim winked into existence. "He should be located near the remains of the Winchester building, place was blown up earlier this week by a splinter faction of rebels, they managed to take a squad of CPs with the building." He traced is finger to the fourth floor. "This is th ruined section, anything above that is highly unstable, exactly where you'd want to go if you were commaning some troops, out of the way, and no one will think you're crazy enough to go up. Unfortunatly for him, I like crazy." he stepped behind the table and pulled a plank off the wall, revealing solid trimantium plating. "Got some weapons and gear in here if you need it, I'd recomend the LDRR-170 from there, nice, quiet, and quick. Everything you need. For you Patrick, I'd take a SFP-78, thats quiet, not to nice, and perfect for the distance you'll be at, short to long."

Avuora nodded. "THanks, but I'll pass on the weapons, never even shot a gun before. I'll stick with the swords I'm used to. Ready Patrick?"

Patrick noded. "I'd like one last thing." He flipped open his cell phone and dialed his father's phone. When the phone clicked, Patrick stiffened. "Dad, its Pat, I'm coming over there. Yes, my orders are to go find you. I know dad." His voice trembled at the end. "I'll see you soon dad, love you." He clicked his phone shut and and bit his lip. "Lets go."

Avuora, after doing some mental calculations, set both his and Patricks teleporters. He pressed the button.
OOC: I'll leave the describing to you.

They appeared just one floor below where Edward Dougan was supposed to be. Patrick clicked off the safety of his rifle, the high pitch whine of charging plasma cells filled the air. "Auvora, I need you to stay in stealth, I'll distract him, you do the actual..." He hesitated a moment. "Job. Then we'll get the hell out of here and head for the bar." He motioned towards the stiarwell. "Lets move."

Avuor anodded, turned on his stealth, and loosened his katana in its sheath. He crouched down and started up the stairway after Patrick. Poor guy, I'm sure this won't be easy for him. Its probably best that I'm going to make the actual kill. It wouldn't be good for him to have his fathers blood on his hands.

Patrick eased open the door to the thirteenth floor and stepped in. A single man wandered the abandoned office space, straing intently at a PDA and occasionaly flicking at something on screen. "Dad." Edward Dougan turned around suddenly, hand on his sidearm. "Oh, Pat, its you. we've been having a hell of the time with these rebs, don't you think?" Patrick shook his head. "Dad, you shouldn't be doing this." Edward cocked his head to the side. "And why not?" Irritation crept into his voice. Patrick shook his head again. "Dad, your getting to old for this, its time you sarted thinking about yourself and not the Union!" Edward smiled and laughed. "Are you kidding me? With modern medical science, I could live to be almost two hundred!" Patrick frowned slightly. "You never did those treatments dad, your need to think about yourself for once." Edward sighed and leaned against one of the rickity cubicles. "You're right Pat... but I have a duty to fullfill, us Dougan's are the Union's best tacticians, I can't just ignore what I've been doing for most of my life, or whats been going on. I'm a soldier Pat, so are you, we do what we have to, follow our orders, serve our nation, even if it means doing it to our dying breath." The words sliced through Patrick like a knife, hitting at the very core of his being. For a split second he doubted what he was about to let Avuora do. A single tear slid down his cheek. "I'm sorry dad."
OOC: Thats the signal mereshka, do your thing.

Avuora nodded sadly, and sympathy wrenching his very soul, he did one of the basic moves of his style, pulling the sword from the sheath, and slicing off the mans head at the same time. Avuora slid the katana back into the sheath with a dread finalty as the head rolled to the floor. Avuor stayed silent as he watched Patrick, waiting for a reaction.

Patrick stared at his fathers corpse mumbling incoherently. He took a half step forward before halting. "He drew his pistol and jammed the barley against his head, hand shaking violently. For a moment, it seemed like he would pull the trigger, before the gun clattered to the floor and he collapsed sobbing next to Edward's corpse.

Avuora made sure to check that the coast was clear, and turned off his stealth. He knelt by Patrick, and put his arm around his shoulder. "Hey,its okay, its okay. You did the right thing, it couldn't be avoided. Think of it like this. Because of your sacrifice, you can stop how many thousands from having to see their father dead at the hands of the governmenr? It will all be worth it at the end, when you see the smiling children in the streets, finally with a full belly, and somewhere to sleep. And they will all be thanking Patrick Dougle."

Patrick closed his eyes then stood up. "I... I guess your right. I tried to save him, tried to get him to turn away from this path, to finaly live life, but he wouldn't listen. I guess it was more his choice than mine that he died." He wiped away the tears that had clouded his vision, his voice changing to an icy cold pitch. "We need to leave, soldiers will wonder why orders have ceased transmitting, and when they do, we need to be as far as possible."

Avuora nodded. "Alright, lets get to the bar." He set his transporter, and pressed the button without waiting for an answer.

"Fer christ's saek, stop doing that!" Frank lowered his shotgun after coming extremly close to killing them, again. "I heard about what you did son, it took guts doing that to your own father, remind me to tell you about that one time." He activated the small holo projector on the desk, a news feed winked into life. "They've been broadcasting it all over the news for the past few hours, either you guys have a slow teleport, or it really took you that long to do the job. From what I've heard, the Union has officialy declared war on the rebellion, the reb's are calling themselves the Union remnant, and returned the decleration of war in turn. This is gonna be one long war."
OOC: That concludes the first RP thread, the second thread will deal with the war itself.

Avuora shrugged. "I took some time to comfort Patrick, trust me, ots not teleporter."
OOC: Yeah!! Wars!! Will there be another sign-up, since me and you are the only ones really participating?

William pulled around the corner at the usual line or poor folk, he noticed faces, and they noticed his. he pulled the police car over, leaving the cp in the back as his got out. He ran up to one of the bums, the poor man got his word out first " We....we thought they killed you.." William smiled and put his hand on the mans back " No comrade, they won't kill this fox just yet, tell me of your progress since my being gone." The man smiled " Your book...this World Manifesto, we have been teaching it in the alleys, secretly to avoid detection from the authorities." William Jefferson was glad his cause wasnt crushed on the spot, some of the poor were armed, they hid the weapons under garbage if they had to.

watching from the a roof overseeing the run down bar, a lone figured dressed in black could only look on and weep. Sadly, he played a tune on his violin...one could tell from it's slow eerily sweet notes that it was a requiem; a requiem for a shattered dream
OOC: A bit of foreshadowing for my char if that's okay with everyone :D
