A Death in the Empire

Tragedy has struck the Commonwealth today as news of the Sanctified Emperor's death has been made public in a joint statement made by his family, House Ounas, and the Crown Council. The late Lugalu II was eighty-one years of age and serving his tenth year as Emperor and Head of State of Uraartu. The cause of death has not yet been released and, according to the Archpriest of Taraplos, will remain undisclosed until the election of a new Emperor. The Archpriest of Taraplos will serve as provisional High and Mighty Lord of the Crown Council, and therefore de facto head of state of the Commonwealth, for ten days (OOC: until I make another post) during the late-Emperor's mourning until a new Emperor is elected by the Crown Council in line with the a.d. 1399 Imperial Edict Concerning the Death of Emperor and Election of a Successor.
Funeral arrangements for the Emperor include the construction of a stone tower which equals his height (approx. 70 inches) multiplied by his length of reign (10 years). Therefore a stone tower of seven hundred inches, or fifty-eight feet will be constructed in the Valley of the August Ones, where all deceased Emperors are placed, and his body will be set on the top of the tower and set alight in accordance with traditional funerary practices prescribed by the state-sanctioned Faithful Church of the Sacred Flame. Once the fire dies, his body will be left for Nature to dispose of in its own way. The funeral will take place immediately with no one but the priests presiding over the ceremony present.
After the mourning period, the Council of the Throne, a.k.a. the Crown Council, will meet in full session for the first time since a.d. 1998 when Lugalu II himself was elected. Candidates for the throne must be a Prince of the Empire, and therefore a current ruler of a Princely State. There are seventeen Princes of the Empire, and the two leading contenders are the High King of Kurpal, Polliak Ounas ar-Ekuno, the late-Emperor's brother, and the King of Wassa, Jaroj Orlan ar-Khorshi. No member of the Council could be reached for comment on who they would support in the election.

Your Most Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Your offer to pay for the tower is most gracious and I thank you on behalf of the Emperor's family and the Crown Council. Unfortunately, though, I must turn it down for, you see, it is tradition that only the Church, of which I am the leader, fronts the bill, so to speak, for any and all funerary costs. Again, your offer is well met, and I am sure that the next Emperor will look kindly upon your nation in the future.
Signed,
Marko Eryo ar-Naru

Today marks the tenth and final day of the period of mourning for the late Emperor Lugalu II. Sympathetic cries have poured in from all across the Commonwealth for the late Emperor, even including the Foreign Minister of Burtilana. All eyes are on the Crown Council, however, as they assemble to elect a new Emperor.
In the thousand-year history of the Commonwealth, Imperial elections have never taken less than a full day or more than a full year. Due to the mysterious death of one of the two candidates earlier this week of Polliak Ounas ar-Ekuno, the High King of Kurpal, however, it seems that the election process will take only a few minutes as Jaroj Orlan ar-Khorshi, the King of Wassa, is confirmed as Emperor-Elect.
If all predictions are true, and King Jaroj XXI is elected, then he will be crowned Emperor at the Olimban Palace in Oka-Babilu in a coronation ceremony on the First Day of the Month of Dah'alt, at the end of the Uraartite New Year's Day Festival.

News today from the Crown Council reveal that Jaroj Orlan ar-Khorshi, the King of Wassa, will be crowned Emperor to no one's suprise. Also released today are the autopsies of the late Emperor Lugalu II and his brother Polliak, former frontrunner for the Throne. A number of political insiders have hinted that the two brothers may have been assassinated by the Orlan family in order to secure a position as Emperor. The High Inquisitor and Corrector's Office has released a statement ensuring the people that they would be investigating the deaths.
The coronation, though, will proceed despite the investigation. The Federal Capital District is expected to be entirely shut down due to the influx of travellers from across the country wishing to see the crowning of the new Emperor. The coronation will take place at the Olimban Palace in the Imperial Capital of Oka-Babilu before the end of the week.

In a public ceremony earlier today, attended by representatives from all across Uraartu and even some foreign dignitaries, King Jaroj XXI was officially crowned Sanctified Emperor by His Holiness the Archpriest of Taraplos. The Crown of the Albino Elephant was accepted by the King, he took the solemn oath of the Imperial Throne, and announced that his regnal name would be Nechru XII, in honour of his great uncle Nechru XI who was Emperor for but a month in a.d. 1958. It has also been announced by the Crown Council that the Emperor has already scheduled his first foreign diplomatic visit to the Free Absolutist Empire of Neo-Ixania, in order to establish diplomatic ties and trade rights.
