1930s Adventure (OOC Interest)

The Purple and Pink

So with Indy 4 around the corner (and my expectations soaring through the roof), I've looked around the boards and have yet to find a 1930s styled adventure roleplay. I must say, I.I., that I am most disappointed in you. Fear not; somebody has taken the initiative to get an excavation crew together, but right now I'm short on a couple of things. Namely a story, a setting, a lost artifact, and...well, characters of course.

With that said, I'm looking to get some participation here, maybe throw some ideas around a bit. I think it'd be great if the quest in question spanned several nations (original or real) instead of just one. The artifact could be a real one, but I'm thinking a made up one would suit us better. Something powerful but not TOTALLY outlandish. I'd like to be able to link it to some nation's history (original or otherwise).

As far as characters go, there's a gazillion possibilities, but it'd be stupid to even mention them without a plot. Help me out here folks; think The Mummy or Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Hmmm, not a bad idea. I would be interested in RPing as a Nazi, or a russian, or some other not-so-nice force. As for the object, why not an amulet of blah blah blah that gives the wearer superhuman blah blah? Hint-fill in the blahs. Also, I would want a zeppelin based task force to pursue the heroes around the world. Definatley the nazis for me.

I am most interested. Whenever the details are hammered out, I'll make a character. Possibly someone who is working for the Nazis? I'm not sure right now.

How about the Spear of Destiny?

Alright guys. I know its been a week since I've posted, but I've been busy with some things and there seems to have been very little interest thus far anyways. At any rate, recently inspired by a 50s scifi movie I happened to watch a couple days ago, I've determined a setting and storyline and now all I need is for you good people to fill-in the blanks with characters. Here's what I've come up with-hopefully those of you who expressed interest will stick around despite the noticable lack of Nazi villains ;).

The Premise:
The year is 1936, and the setting is as exotic as any other; the harsh, mountainous terrain of Iraq. Although recently declared independent circa 1932, the British continues to have a military presence in the country. Unfortunately this is a source of tension between the two nations.

Nevertheless, that doesn't stop a team of British archeologists from traveling to Iraq to study a recently discovered ancient Sumerian temple, hidden within the rocky confines of a craggy cliff. It is there the team uncovers a set of tablets in Sumerian tongue warning of rising flood waters and impending doom. The tablets say civilization's only hope is to seek higher ground-a revelation, the team believes, that leads to the Zagros mountains. With this destination in mind they pack their bags and journey towards the beautiful mountain range, only to be assailed by radical Muslim extremists who try to kill them along the way.

The attack leads to a series of events that finds our team beneath the surface of Earth, and confronted by an ancient civilization long thought to be extinct.

Characters Needed:

THE HERO
The hero doesn't neccessarily have to be British; as long as whatever nationality he happens to be can be explained. He doesn't have to be an archeologist either. He could be a pilot, a good friend of the professor's who was invited along, or maybe an extravagant treasure hunter who wasn't invited but showed up to the party anyways. The possibilities are endless, just make sure they're rational. This will be the main character of the thread, the leader of the adventure if you will, and he should have the most charisma and spunk of all the characters. Whoever writes him should be clever and creative. I plan to have other adventure threads if this one does well; hopefully the hero here can carry over.

THE HEROINE
The heroine will be the primary assistant to the good professor. She could be played several different ways; the tough tomboy who resents being seen as weak or feminine, the intellectual, or the frail and the naive damsel in distress...whatever you think is best. It will be important to note that she'll be expected to have some romantic interest in the hero...afterall, what are adventure threads without the love interest? Other then that, everything else is fair game.

THE GOOD PROFESSOR
The good professor will be the elderly archeologist who presides over this entire shindig. He will be bumbling but super intelligent; old and physically weak but resilient, and he will be good friends with the hero. Unfortunately, he is the character I will be playing for the duration of this story, mostly so I can sort of use him to direct plot points that might not be so easy or clear if somebody else were portraying him.

THE NATIVE GUIDE
This will be the man who will lead the team to and up the Zagros Mountains. He will be a native Iraqi, of course, and although the handler may play him as they see fit, it'd be nice to have him at odds with the heroine. I'd like to sort of see him played as an antagonist, maybe sort of cowardly, but I'll leave it to the discretion of whoever plays him.

THE ARMY MAN
Worried that Islamic Extremists may descend upon the foreign archeology site, a small contingency of British troops have been deployed to safeguard the team. The army man will be the leader of these troops, and should be played as a no nonsense sort of character. Shoot to kill, don't trust the natives type of guy, who is maybe at odds with the hero in his quest to win the heart of the heroine.

THE ASSISTANT
And last but not least, every adventure needs a nerdy, bookwormish youth, constantly challenged by the more masculine characters and sometimes actually rising to the occasion. He is an assistant to the professor, and like all of the characters besides the hero and the guide, he's got to be British. Other then that, do what you will with him.

It should be noted that all the character possibilities here other then the Hero and Heroine will be expendable. That means that at any point in the story they may die. Of course, I will make sure to tgram you if or when that time comes, so you can write their death out yourself. This story should be fast-paced and chalk full of conflict; as I said earlier, if it's met with success, I've got some other ideas in mind. Hopefully we get some takers on this one.

Would you be interested in a morally gray London antiques dealer and ancient history expert? The guy is helping to fund this dig in exchange for the right to sell any artifacts on the market, although he probably wouldn't be a major character and wouldn't be in Iraq- perhaps at the start and then tipping off the Nazis about the site.
Name: James Riddington
Age: 42
Height:5' 9"
Weight: 165
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Brown
Profession: Antique Dealer, owner of Riddington's Antique Emporium
History: Recruited to find the digs by the professor, who he knows professionally. Does so in exchange for the right to buy any recovered artifacts at a discount and then sell them at his store for a profit.

If you allow me, then my character will be White Russian refuge who has decided to help the excavation team in their search. He won't be one of the major characters but I want to give him some "screen time."

Name: Alexei Romanovich
Age: 45
Height: 6' 0"
Weight: 170
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Greyish blue
Profession: Guard, used to be a soldier in the Imperial Russian Army
History: Since an early age Alexei has known the true horrors of life. He was conscripted into the old Tsarist army during the dying days of WW1. But the end of the war only brought more problems for him. He and all his family supported the Tsar not the Bolsheviks which immediately caused problems when they came to power. Alexei and his family fled to Poland where they now hope for a better life. Alexei on the other hand has gone to Iraq to aid in the expedition.

Profession: Guide, used to be a freedom fighter
History: Abrahem fought for Iraqi freedom for 2 years before being thrown in jail. He is out, and, though broke, most people think he knows the terrain of the country better than anyone else. He is fiercely loyal to his freedom fighting movement and Iraqi independance. He also knows Sumerian and Hebrew, as well as English and Arabic.

Hmmm... This would have been interesting in a more NationStates-esque sense ;) I would have offered my own country as a possible location on the way: 1809-1983 Northern Rangeria was an occupied nation under Greater Rangerian rule (think of Finland or Poland under Russian rule at the turn of the century, with a crapload of German militarism and Nazi-esque race hatred ;) ).

In the real world setting... Mmmm... I'm not so sure. But I'll keep reading out of interest ^^

If a hero's needed.

Name: Napoléon Sérurier
Age: 26 (If that's too young, just let me know.)
Height: 5' 8"
Weight: 155 lbs.
Hair: Black
Eyes: Brown
Profession: Officer in the French Army, took indefinite leave to join the expedition

For his association with the professor, I was thinking that he studied in England and took one of the professor's classes. He took a keen interest in the stories and legends that the professor spoke of, and they developed a close relationship. Before returning to France to enroll in the École Militaire, he made the professor promise to take him on an expedition some day, and the professor is making good on his promise by inviting him along.

History: Napoléon was born in 1910 to a rich suburban Parisian family. He did not have to go to school nor work a day in his life, but he chose to do both out of natural curiosity. His parents were often too busy ensuring that he could continue to enjoy the wealth they did. Thus they didn't spend much time with him, and he spent much of his time alone reading and excersising. He was soon sent off to college in England for a year, to perfect his English. Upon returning to France, he enrolled in the École Militaire, where he graduated in a mere three years, at the top of his class, and became a (First) Lieutenant in the French Army.

Like his namesake, he can be both brilliant and obstinate. He is an outspoken French nationalist, which occasionally brings him at odds with his British companions.

When does this thing start? Where is the nerdy assisstant?
Belkaros
29-05-2008, 00:47
I like the idea of setting it in a NS country with NS nationalaties and factions. Of course, the Imperialist Belkans could fill in nicley for the Nazis of the era, looking to claim the land and all of its wealth (mineral and historical) for the Imperium. That could make things a little more interesting, and the whole buisness would feel less Indiana Jonesey. Oh, the hero should be American, for the sense of stereotyoicality.

Anywhoo, here are a few bios, one for a Belkan commander, should we go that route, and the other for the Nazi one.

Name: Sondereinheit Kommandant Klaus Richthofen, Captain of the Luftschiff Schwert
Age: 38
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 215
Hair: Black
Eyes: Blue
Profession: Captain in service with the Luftwaffe
History: Orphaned son of the famed WWI ace Baron Richtofen (The Red Barron), Klaus was adopted and raised by his father's commanding officer. He became a respected pilot, well on his way to filling his father's shoes, when he joined the NSDAP and became instrumental in gaining power for the Third Reich. As a reward, and as a way to utalize his gifts as a pilot and commander, he was given command of the Schwert, a war-zeppelin built in secret for covert operations.

Name: Nauarchus (Captain) Herod Narcissus, Captain of the Aeronavis Ventus and Centurus of her Task Force
Age: 41
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 199
Hair: Black
Eyes: Grey
Profession: Captain in service with the Belkan Imperial Air Corps.
History: One of the first men to pilot an Aeronavis airship, Narcissus's ability to command and his intimate understanding of his craft made him a perfect candidate for the command of the Ventus and its compliment of ground troops. The ship's mission is to secure land and resources for the Empire.

The original post promised Nazis. What if the story was bumped back a year or two to include Nazis. Hitler loved the occoult, so that could be a perfect excuse to get the Reich involved. Plus, what kind of mid to early 1900;s RP dosn't have Nazis? The bad kind.
Edvardus
29-05-2008, 04:06
I don't think using NS would be better since it would be hard for everyone to contribute writing parts of a story set in a place that only one person is familiar with.

I also don't get why everyone wants Nazis in this story. Only Eurocentric stories set in the late-1930s and early-1940s involve Nazis. I hate to break it to y'all but Western Europe and the United States aren't the only places in this world that matter.

As far as good/bad stories, it all depends on how it is written. If we're basing it on villains, the premise of a 1930s story with extremist Muslims is already stretching it since "extremist Muslims" haven't been the villains before 9/11 in any time period since the Crusades. The person who started this has set the guidelines so let's just follow them and use our creativity.

I appreciate the interest you've taken in the RP, but this particular one won't have any Nazi's or foreign antagonists. The villains won't be conventional in any sense; I just can't see anybody else being able to play them besides myself, since I'm the one creating the story here. With that said, I urge you to take the nerdy character, but I won't begrudge you if you don't. I know you'll probably say no, but everybody should try playing characters outside their range every so often.

We won't be using an NS setting because as stated previously, it'd be too complicated.
