HM War Office
The Imperial Army is the land-based branch of Atruria's military. It is the senior service of the military, considering that several of its units are directly descended from those in the British Army, formed several hundred years earlier, and that it was the first branch founded by and independent Atruria. It is the largest branch within the armed forces and is equipped for a multitude of tasks.
The Atrurian Army, in its first incarnation, was founded in 1781, as the Army of the Imperial Union. The Union Army was incorporated by the Union Assembly, the provisional government of Atruria at the time of the War of Independence from the British Empire, as a loose coalition of regional militias, guerrillas, and defected British Army units.
In its present form, the Imperial Army is a highly-modernized, well-trained and professional military force, administered by Her Majesty's Government under the War Office. Currently, the Imperial Army equips itself primarily with modern-era British-made equipment, and to a minor extent, American and even some Scandinavian weapons systems. However, the War Office has announced its intention to refit the Metropolitan Army with even more high-tech (PMT/NS-made) equipment. This process, having not yet begun, is expected to last up several months, beginning with refitting the infantry.
Currently, the Imperial Army is comprised of several independent major formations: the Metropolitan Army of the Empire, the Rifles, the Corps of Experimental Warfare, the Free Corps, the Special Operations Executive, and the Imperial Yeomanry.
Metropolitan Army of the Empire
The Metropolitan Army of the Empire, more commonly known simply as the Metropolitan Army, is the largest, and main, branch of the Imperial Army. Though small for the regular army of a nation of 3.6 billion people, the Metropolitan Army is well-equipped and consists of highly-trained, highly-motivated personnel and is an all-around capable force. The Metropolitan Army essentially consists of several smaller formations, known also as armies. These armies themselves are only semi-autonomous in terms of command, but fully independent in terms of the ability to wage campaigns on their own, well-stocked with supplies, and with ample combat and logistical personnel. Each army consists of three independent Air Assault Divisions, as well as three Corps, in turn comprising each of two mechanized infantry divisions and one armored division.

Mechanized Infantry Division: Equipped with the Warrior IFV, the mechanized infantry is considered the quintessential force of the Metropolitan Army, the lion’s share of which is centralized upon them. Following the phasing out of light infantry from the Metropolitan Army, the mechanized divisions became the main infantry force, performing both armored and light infantry roles. Mechanized infantry divisions have organic artillery, air, and armor support, as well as a full array of logistics units, and are a versatile, capable force.
Air Assault Division: Deployed from helicopters to meet their adversaries in combat, the sole remaining light infantry forces of the Metropolitan Army belong to the more elite air assault divisions. Known for their mobility as much as for their discipline, air assault infantry enjoy a very substantial amount of air support, as well as light armored support from the air-droppable Sheridan Light Tank and air-droppable artillery support L118 Light Gun.
Armor Division: Built around the Challenger II Main Battle Tank, the Metropolitan Army’s fearsome armored divisions are quite a sight. Though not quite as speedy or mobile as the mechanized infantry, the armor divisions are known to pack quite a punch. Armored Divisions draw organic air, artillery, and mechanized infantry support and, like Mech Infantry Divisions, feature a complete set of logistical units.
