OOC: Its election time again in Faxanavia, and rather then just make a random post saying, "so-and-so is the new PM" I figured it would be much more fun to open it up to the opinion of II. As usual, donations are always accepted, as well as nation's endorsements of parties.

Faxanavian Elections '08

In the 2nd section of the Constitution of the Promethian Republic of Faxanavia, the Faxanavian senate is created to be a representative body for the people. The Senate represents the primal law-making body, combined with the office of the Prime Minister, and is made up of elected senators from each state. In total, there are 180 seats in the senate, and every six years, a new senate is elected by the people and for the people

FNN Pre-election Update
indentElection fervor has struck Faxanavia once again, and 2008's election looks to be a momentous one. Already, a clear lead seems to have been garnered by the previous underdog Freedom Party, the ultra-small government party which stepped onto the political scene several years ago has struggled to maintain its 8 seats in the Senate since its establishment. However, many voters say that they feel the need for a shift in political power within the Senate towards smaller government and, more importantly, the lowering of taxes. The current leading party, the Liberal Party, is in for a tough time in this election- the combination of the 2007 tax raises and the nomination of incumbent Prime Minister Ivansky Bochick as their candidate for Prime Minister has made it a very tough playing field. Many voters blame the Bochick administration for the rising taxes and for Faxanavia's continual military involvement in several campaigns that voters sight as, "a waste of lives and tax marks."
indentHowever, one must look past the old and the new, and examine the other contenders in this political race. On the heels of the Freedom Party come the Conservative Party, considered the more centrist-right party in this election. The Conservatives have historically held a respectably sized portion of the Senate, and this race looks to be no different.
indentThe Popular Party, considered a close ally of the Liberal Party, looks like an unlikely chance. Their policy of maintaining the status quo does not mesh well with most voters, who are looking for a more active party in support of change.
indentAs usual, there are the smaller parties on the scene. The Green Party is predicted to maintain its usual rather small influence on voters, and continues to pander to its base with success. The Lak'Tasat Party, however, may be in deep trouble after a press conference last Tuesday when Lak'Tasat nominee Kalnet Konst Lewx (Kalnet being an old Faxanavian honorific similar to chief) stated that he, if elected, would, "See about the deportation of all those stinking Uir that are stealing our proud heritage!" Uir voters currently resident in Faxanavia could not be reached for an opinion, but one Lak'Tasat official assured us that the Kalnet was, quote, "heavily on psychotropics when he said that."
Next tuesday opens the polls in Western Faxanavia and officially begins the elections. We here at FNN will be waiting with bated breath to see the results.

FNN Election Madness Pt. 1!
indentToday marked the start of Faxanavian elections with the voting of Bolshkov's 1st district. In a surprise upset, the Conservative party, which was ranking low in the polls, grabbed two of the three seats in Bolshkov's first, the third going to the older favorite the Freedom Party. Conservative PM candidate Garret Linsares said in a press conference this afternoon that he "was very pleased with the turn out" and attributed much of the victory to both foreign and internal support of the Conservative Party.
indentHowever, this is just heating up. Tomorrow, Bolshkov's 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th will vote for their three senate seats. Political analysts with FNN expect the Conservatives to continue their sweep of votes in Bolshkov, with the Freedom Party also receiving a fair share of the votes. However, analysts also expect the Labour Party to take in a modicum of votes, with their ever loyal support base among the highly industrial Bolshkov cities.

The Freedom Party sounds a lot like Anarcho-Capitalists--more, Minarcho-Capitalists--and those bright economists would want to wrest control of money from 'ze government. They would recognize that fiat currency is very stable, because it has value. A lot of value. It's VERY useful. It just doesn't have INTRINSIC value.


It seems to me that the kind of people who OPPOSE people like the Freedom Party would advocate return to the gold standard.

...actually, I don't know ANYONE who would. I guess it's mostly free of politics.

I assume that you could base the worth of the money on the market itself, but it seems logical to back it with something. In the case of fiat, its the government's promise of worth, but in the case of gold, its something with actual existence. Of course, I may lack the knowledge to understand the fiat system, but that's how it seems to me.

I like the bit with the merger of Freedom and Conservative. But, I think, Freedom's too off the scale of left and right for there to be a merger. Conservative is the more sensible version of freedom.

Actually, from one more familiar with anarchism, I think that (although it seems also out of character for the Freedom Party, I don't believe they're that extreme) the Freedom Party's view would be towards abolishment of government currency. (i.e., private organizations would issue currency, as already happens i.e. e-gold).

IMHO, government currency is based solely on the fact that, not because of gold trade-ins or government promise (what do they promise), but that one knows that if one accepts a dollar as payment, for example, that they will be able to buy something tomorrow.

EDIT: Actually, I think there is a law to the effect that people must accept dollars as payment for debt. However, the main reason is as I stated, the currency's stable enough that you know it has value.

Moreover, really, I don't know anyone who cares about the currency. I really don't understand why the issue is one for the Freedom Party.

Because: I don't think that anybody actually cares about the issue in of itself. In fact, I think that everyone supports government currency as it's a moneymaker for the government (yeah, it is) and therefore less taxes :)

Of course, anyone who advocates anarchy would realize that the situation of private currency IS what would happen, but I'm pretty sure that everyone who a) is thinking not about theory but the fact that we DO have a government now and b), understands economics is in favour of government currency.

indentAfter several days of voting, counting, and re-counting, a consensus has been reached in Bolshkov, the first of the six states to vote. In a surprise upset, the early favored Freedom Party has now taken second place to the Conservative Party in the race, with the Labour and the Green Parties trailing just behind in a tie for third. Bolshkov's thirty seats have been divided as follows:


12 seats: The Conservative Party
7 seats: The Freedom Party
4 seats: The Labour Party
3 seats: The Green Party
2 seats: The Liberal Party
2 seats: the People's Party


indentToday marks the beginning of voting for the second state of the Promethian Republic, Printernavia. Many expect the usually conservative Printernavia to stay true to form, bolstering the Conservative Party's lead even more. In a press conference, Conservative candidate Garret Linsares thanked the people of Bolshkov, and said that he hoped for similar success in the remaining five states.
