[[An introductory thread for the latest incarnation of the Ventish. No big fleets/invasions et cetera please.]]

“Weatherby!”

A broad-shouldered man with greying hair in a black three-piece suit coughed gently, touching the brim of his bowler hat. The man seated in a leather armchair in front of him turned in surprise. This individual is wearing a dark grey tail coat, a waistcoat of the same colour but slightly paler with silver embroidery, a white shirt, tan breeches with white stockings, and a crimson cravat. His hair and impressive mutton chops are perfectly white and his bright blue eyes distracted.

‘Oh, there you are. Take an ethergram.’

‘Very good, sir, to whom is it addressed?’

The man pulled a thin black screened device from a pocket and unclipped the stylus as his employer spoke.

‘To my wife, Weatherby, do keep up!
‘Cruise remains agreeable, two regions found without civilisation. Primitives in the first, the Captain sent word to Raithwaite. Moving on to next region, love to children, home soon if nothing turns up.’

He pauses, clears his throat and stares into space for a moment, then opens his book.

‘Is that all, sir?’

‘Yes, yes, Weatherby. Pass that to one of the footmen to send on, and bring me a drink!’

‘Very good sir, they are called “ratings” in the Navy, sir.’

This receives a grumble of acknowledgement from the gentleman, already engrossed in his tome.

A few hours later

‘Sir, the Captain requests your presence. A new region approaches.’

The gentleman with the red cravat stretches, blinking sleep from his eyes. He stood and made his way down the metal corridors of the ship, eventually arriving in the war room directly behind the Bridge. The Captain, a figure of authority even without his impressive navy-blue and gold uniform or the half dozen officers around him, looked up from the holographic projection of the system.

‘Sir Richard, welcome.’

‘Thank you, Captain Loveday, how does it go?”

‘Adequately, Sir Richard, we have just arrived in the third region.’

The Captain pauses and turns to his subalterns.

‘Mister Carrington, all ahead full into the system. Mister Babbitt, send out Sir Richard’s message.’

‘Aye aye, sir’

‘Aye aye, sir’

The message passed out into the system.

It is my honour and duty to extend the greetings and offer of friendship of His Majesty King Victor IV, ruler of Ventuus, its dominions and territories and all who dwell therein to any beings who may reside within this region of space.

The science vessels James Carter (New Haven), Leif Erikson (Bryn Shander), Abdul Alhazred (Derscon), Plato (Belka) and the others from Auman and Outer Heaven had found a space-time rift in the Oort Cloud of the system and were debating whether or not to throw a wavefront mine into it to test the effects of a detonation on space-time rifts.

Captain Fredrickson of the James Carter did not really care what the egg-heads in the laboratory sections thought, he was only here because the Imperator was curious to see what would happen and if it could be developed into a weapon. If it wasn't one thing, it was another... and one person's space-time rift was another person's potential new super weapon.

"Communications, is our long-range communications system back up?" Captain Fredrickson asked.

"Negative, sir," the Communications Officer reported. "We're still relaying communications from HQ via the Erikson."

"This is embarassing... let me know when our long-range communications are back online."

"Yes, sir."

"Has the James Carter managed to get her long ranged systems back up yet?" asked Captain Madison on the bridge of the Erikson.

"No, Sir." replied the communications officer that was sitting at his console in the back of the room. "We're still relaying their data back to New Haven for them. The Belkans are reporting all systems go, however."

"Good. Send a request for a sitrep from the gathered forces and ask them to begin preparations for the test."

Erikson's signal lamps began to flash brightly on either side of the vessel's bridge. Her dark blue paint was the only thing that set her apart from her sister ships present, the New Havenic vessel James Carter and the Belkan vessel Plato.

17 May, 3038 - 02:00 ship's time

The engine banks fired slightly, keeping the light cruiser stationary in its dusty little part of the system. Richly painted in black and gold, it was not exactly a stealth ship - more a communications seismograph. And the seismograph had just spiked.

Lillita, the AI on beta shift, processed the equivalent of a mental sigh. Probably some more spam - they seemed to like putting it through the router complex in this system. She made a note to contact the service provider and issue them a formal warning from the Commonwealth Strategic Command. That should scare them nicely.

Her annoyance dwindled almost instantly, however, when she actually read the message.
It is my honour and duty to extend the greetings and offer of friendship of His Majesty King Victor IV, ruler of Ventuus, its dominions and territories and all who dwell therein to any beings who may reside within this region of space.
This looked to be interesting. Might even be a first contact situation.

Processing the header sendercode, she formulated a message and pulsed it back to the point of origin. It was too far away to scan with short-range sensors, and too close to scan with long-range ones. Still, she'd likely know where the message had come from soon.

Captain Nerec of the Pluto recieved the message and ordered blast shields placed and shields raised. Several antennae arrays unfolded themselves from hatches in the hull, and the Belkan ship sent the following response to the other ships:
-.-- -- .--. -.-- .. -... -.- - .-. - ..- .-.. --.- ...- --.. -- .-- --.- .--- .-.. --. .... -.. .- --.- . .--. --.- ..-. ..-. --.. - - -.-- -.-- ... -.. - .--. -.. .--. ... --.- .---

Lillita proceeded to open up the weapons arrays. She didn't open them fully, though, as a precaution. Four long, slim maser barrels rose to protrude just above the topside of the Vraye Foi.

Communications arrays were opened to receive the optical messages from the other ships, with some processors devoted to analysing the messages. A few network security specialists idly wandering around the ship's corridors were called to their stations to knock out any malware that might be coming in. It was optical code, but who knew? They might be transmitting a virus - improbable though it sounded, it had happened.

Lillita also called up a few network exploitation specialists - 'spiders', as they were called in military jargon. Delivery blocks and payloads were loaded together intricately by the spiders in methods determined by the AI, just in case things turned nasty.

Finally, the ship's Officer-in-Charge, Lieutenant Commander Alan Roe, was called up. Popping a few caff pills, he made his way to the bridge in a leisurely fashion, not expecting anything out of the ordinary. However, his interest was aroused when he saw the other six ships in the system.

"Le, take a message, please."

Sure. And I've always thought Le was a bit of an unreasonably short abbreviation, you know? the AI replied imperturbably through Roe's neural weave.

"Right then. Oh yeah, and bring out the spotlight banks, we'll probably need them."

Battleship HMS Implacable, unknown system

‘Mister Babbit, Mister Patey, you seem excited.’

The two lieutenants saluted in front of the captain and Sir Richard.

‘Sir. Message received from in-system, on screen three.’

‘Sir. Ships detected in-system.’

‘Very good Mister Babbit. Sir Richard, you are the king’s emissary.’

‘Thank you Captain Loveday, if you would send the following messages...’

The formal response went out toward the Assault Cruiser Kronos.

The business of this vessel, the Ventish starship Implacable of His Imperial Majesty, is the exploration of diverse systems and contact with the nations and races who dwell therein, be they human or otherwise. Command of the ship is granted to the honourable Captain the Lord Alexander Loveday, and carries the emissary of Victor IV, king, in the person of Sir Richard Harleigh who offers you greetings. What is this “Federation” of yours?

Another, similar, message was sent toward the other ships in the system.

This is the Ventish starship Implacable of His Imperial Majesty’s fleet, tasked with exploration and ordered to make contact with other nations and species of this region of space. Command of the ship is granted to the honourable Captain the Lord Alexander Loveday, and carries the emissary of Victor IV, king, in the person of Sir Richard Harleigh who offers you greetings

Captain asulu formally greets his Majesty's emissary. As for the Federation, we are refered to as the United Federation of Oblivion a large star faring nation in whose territory you now fly in, we are also a member state of the Cyprian Circle. As such you are also held in Cyprian Jurisdiction. Now then if you don't mind we shall escort you to Antares Battlestation where diplomatic negotiations will commence. You may either compliy with our terms and follow us to the station or leave the system. The choice is yours...

"Good job cadet, now then send a message to the Cyprian and Kostemetsian vessels and inform them of our actions."

"Aye aye Captain"

To Our Circle allies
From Captain Asulu of the Assualt Cruiser Kronos
We have made contact with the Ventuu Vessel and are preparing to escort them into Antares station for diplomatic tidings. It would make things easier for the Circle if Vessels from your nations attended this session. Please reply promptly

"Message away captain."

"Good job Cadet"

"What are our next orders sir?" Asked another cadet

"Ready weapons, just in case these Ventuus ar'ent friendly. Also Prepare the Jump engines and set a course to Antares."

"Aye aye captain."

In an instant the Cruiser went from Patrol readiness into full combat readiness. Just in case.

The message came in. Le formulated a quick response and sent it off.

This is the Commonwealth Navy cruiser Vraye Foi, registry CC-235, tasked with reconnaissance in this system. My name is Lillita, and I am a twenty-seventh-generation computerised polysentience currently in command of this cruiser. As with the Oblivion Federation, we are a member state of the Cyprian Circle.

With the happy happy joy joy diplomatic business over for a convenient few seconds, Le formulated another message and dispatched it to the Oblivion ship.

Captain Asulu, the Tao that can be seen is not the true Tao. I highly suggest you leave the Kingdom ship alone for at least a few minutes.

The emissary raised one eyebrow ever so slightly.

‘A battle station and an ultimatum all in one go? Charming people.’

The captain glanced up from talking to one of his lieutenants.

‘Welcome to space, Sir Richard. Apparently the United Federation’s ship is emitting the kind of energy spike that implies a change to war readiness. Still, if a nine hundred metre long warship appeared in our systems we would be a little wary as well. Best prepared and all that. Mister Hargreaves!’

‘Sir?’

‘Beat to quarters; all hands, readiness only’

‘Aye aye, Sir.’ He touched an intercom button to the Bridge next door. ‘Mister Jenkins, beat to quarters; all hands, readiness’

As an affirmation came through the intercom speaker the sound of a rhythmic drumming sequence echoed throughout the Implacable. Ratings and officers alike ran through the corridor systems of the warship to take up their quarters. Crew quarters near the medical bay were quickly and efficiently turned over into emergency quarters for the injured, readiness checks were performed on loaded missile tubes and solders grabbed weapons and ran to their guard positions.

While all this occurred a response was sent to Captain Asulu’s ship, much terser and much less formal than the emissary’s.

Cpt. Asulu, this is Cpt. Loveday. Received and understood. Implacable inbound on your position, lead the way.

The intercom buzzed. All hands at quarters, Mister Hargreaves.

Hargreaves turned to the captain, clicked off a stopwatch.

‘All hands at readiness quarters Sir, four minutes seventeen.’

‘Very good Mister Hargreaves. Mister Carrington, set course toward the Federation vessel, all ahead standard.’

‘Aye aye Captain, all ahead standard.’

"Vogh ml deq laoisg yz dah lqeqdlm nswoqt?" The captain turned around and glared at his XO.

"English, motherfucker, do you speak it?"

"Sorry, sir. What's the status on the Havenic vessal?" He shrugged.

"Comm still seems to be down."

"This is madness!"

"One more meme out of you and I'll blast your fucking brains all over that console." The captain looked once more at the display. "Ah, well. We'll wait for contact from the others."

Zapping the Abdul Alhazred with a signal composed of thousands of mudkips, a Pool's Closed sign, an Anonymous demotivator, the 'ScientLOLojyuuichi!!' flash animation and the director's cut of the movie 300, Le formulated a nice polite message to Captain Asulu, sent it, and went into hibernation, allowing Roe to take over.

The Captain picked up the message, but froze the transmission before the rest of it played. Infuriated, he sent back a signal with only one word, one that if written on a public forum would probably get oneself b&, and was a derogatory term for black people. This was sent repeatedly -- over nine thousand times a second -- to DDoS the communications system of the Kostemetsia ship.

the Ventuuian vessel is willing to move to the Antares Battlestation for Diplomatic Negotitions. If it's acceptable, we shall escort them there. We would as like to have diplomats from your respective nations on the station ASAP.

Withstanding the pitifully slow assault easily, an irritated Le sent a command to the Dersconian ship's guidance array to do a barrel roll.

Turning to the other matter, at least for the moment, she force-booted the ship's ambassador AI, Jonas. He appeared, rubbing his holo-eyes, then perked up when she informed him of the situational status and booted up one of the mechbodies sitting in the basement which they used for these situations, not having a human ambassador on board. An affirmative acknowledgement transmission flashed from the local communication array, letting the Oblivion ship know that their timing was excellent and that an ambassador would be sent right over. The diplomatic fallback was also cancelled, but a suggestion was politely made that ultimatums not be issued so quickly after the discovery of a new humanoid species.

The captain nods his head very slightly.
