Second Rebel Attack[MT,OPEN,IC,attn Agroprom]

back story: First Attack: "Good evening comrades, This is Roman Vladimirovich reporting from NN2. At approximately 5 p.m. today armed gunman stormed the Naszran capital building, taking it's occupants hostage. An hour later, the gunman had formed a large sized rebellion in the city, and led an attack on the nearby military base. heavy casualties were reported on both sides. We now go live to Olya Stasenko, who is reporting from the outskirts of Naszran."

[sporadic gunfire and grenade explosions can be heard in the background]
"This is Olya Stasenko reporting, heavy fighting has broken out between the rebel forces and military, with countless civilians caught in the crossfire. The Ministry of Internal Affairs are attempting to close off the city as to not let the rebels retreat into the valley, but as you can see it is causing some problems with civilians. I have just received information that an armored column is going to spearhead a counter offensive into the city supported by artillery and air support."[the cameraman focuses on a church tower collapsing from being hit with multiple RPG rounds, then pans to where the T-80 tanks are massing about 700m away from them]]" We will follow the tanks by moving in with the supporting infantry."

"We are now in route to the Ceder District a short distance behind the APC's which appear to not be under heavy fire. it appears the enemy has been suppressed in this neighborhood and the soldiers are dismounting. due to the road conditions we are now going to have to move on foot."

{Infantry squad} "Take no prisoners comrade!"The Officer yells as the soldiers dismount from their BTR-70, they begin to take small arms fire. "Get behind cover! get suppressing fire on their position, over there, by the stairs!" many of the conscripts begin to fire in the general direction of the fire escape of a multiplex. "Advance forward, shoot from behind cover" "enemy down!" "Ahshit, I'm hit!" "enemy sniper!" "Arrow! Arrow! requesting gunship support on these coordinates, E7-49-B!" "Where are the gunships Zanski!?" "they should be inbound any second now" seconds later two Mi-24 Hinds completely level a small apartment building, one of which is then shot down with a portable SAM launcher" An RPG then destroys one of the APC's in the column, killing it's crew and two infantry"

[Olya]
*bullets can be heard ricocheting off nearby buildings and pavement*
"The Motor Rifle group ahead has just run into stiff resistance, and we are cut off from the group by one of our helicopters that was just shot down, one of the crewman survived and is being taken behind the safe zone. Me, Adam and Nikolai are going to try and find another way around." The three cut through a warehouse, which was occupied until recently by the rebels, who left a number of wounded and dead behind in the building[which would later be hit by a stray artillery shell]. "I'm back, we have lost sight of the infantry, and are now near friendly tanks, which are advancing on a position. It appears the rebels have captured some T-55 or 64 tanks along with several BMP from the Army base meaning that it was overrun." *nothing can be heard do to the 125mm main guns from the friendly M-84's and T-90's, along with the captured enemy tanks firing damaging the sound equipment*
[Olya now yelling loudly] "AN ARMOR FIGHT IS TAKING PLACE ACROSS THE STREET, SORRY IF I'M YELLING BUT I CAN'T HEAR ANYTHING, NIKOLAI, FILM IT" *the camera shows the battle, several of the enemy tanks are in flames, with 3 disabled and abandoned, while another 3 retreat, and two friendly tanks disabled, another of which needed to be abandoned*
[Olya, still talking rather loudly] "It appears to me that the enemy have to be from a foreign country, since many of the stolen armor didn't hit anything at all. We are going to fall back to the main line for now, as the battle in this neighborhood is getting too intense"

Official Government order: starting at 7 a.m., Naszran will be leveled with heavy artillery and air strikes. any civilians still inside the city have exactly 3 hours to evacuate. anyone still within the city after then will be assumed to be rebel fighters. Designated evac points are located in the eastern city limits at the following locations:
1- Capital Ave. Bridge.
2- Berdan st.
3- Tilmann Airfield
These are the only locations that are authorized to evacuate, and you must go through an MVD scan. They are authorized to detain any suspected fighters. Anyone seen escaping from any other location are left to the mercy of the Federal Forces.

"Today, just before dawn, the 76th Air Assault Division conducted a successful, decisive attack against the rebels. It is reported from sources that there were few casualties among the VDV, and that they had inflicted heavy casualties against the rebels, killed a key leader, and effectively stopped their capability to mount any offensive attacks on other cities. Meanwhile, the nationwide curfew has been lifted."

"As of this moment, the time limit ran out for the evacuations and the Army has begun striking certain areas of the city with thermobaric weapons, along side helicopter gunships and heavy artillery strikes. Lt. Colonel Zhukov has announced that they will not bomb the city completely, and that there are units within the city tasked with both evacuating civilians and treating wounded, but also wiping out the enemy. It has been confirmed that the origin of the rebels is the country of Adjikstan. Due to the country not having an effective government or military, our Government has authorized the military to preform cross border raids."

"Earlier today, the Government announced that the rebellion has been suppressed, and it is to begin reconstruction of areas damaged by fighting, alongside finding and disarming unexploded ordinance. Naszran is still blocked off, although emergency service crews are granted access while mop up operations continue within the city. This is NTV-1, I'm Aleksandr Djukovic.........."

"It has been announced today that all embassies within the country are to be relocated into Raccoon City, due to recent development in the city. the area's in question are located in the uptown area, close to the University.

In other news, riot police were called in to the nations capital to deal with protesters, who are upset about the governments human rights record concerning the bombing of Naszran and Pripyat, in which many civilians perished.

Racoon City

Petran Redak nursed his AK-74, sitting in an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Raccon City. The fighting in Naszran had been intense, he admits it, but not as intense as it was due to get. It was the opening event, the warm up. Racoon City was seen as safe, not under threat. Soon, that would change.

The first target for him and his brothers was a small helicopter base in the north of the city. There, they would group and strike into the city, and towards an air Base ten miles to the east. At their disposal, they had a wide variety of weaponns, ranging from light artillery pieces to BMP's. It had all been massed in secret in the forests around the city. Contacts in Agroprom, right across the border, had provided some high tech weaponary as well.

His motives were wide and varied. Mainly, he just wanted combat - that taste, that rush. He would go with the rebels to the end - everyone had different reasons for fighting, but a common goal - anarchy in Racoon City. It would start that night - Chechnya in Russia would be on a minor scale compared to this.

-From the Raccoon Times newspaper, rumor column

"Secret Military base in Raccoon?

Speculators suggest that the government may have set up a base somewhere in the forest or Arklay Mountains. Lately, hikers have seen what seem like tank tracks. While I could not get contact with internal sources, I don't believe the rumors that it is rebel activity, perhaps it's just a farmer driving his tractor?"

today:

Raccoon City, 0530 Hours

And so it began. The sun was just beginning to rise when the sound of light artillery guns and mortars cracked through the forest. Birds flew from the nearby trees and dew dripped from the branches as the ground shook. The sound of tanks rumbled through the forest, and armed men ran over the moist early morning ground. The first target was an airbase a not far outside the forest.

At the base itself, two large groups of rebels had amassed in the night, along with some BTR's and BMP's. The first artillery shots fell on the base, lighting up the morning. The attack was planned as accurately as could be done with the lightly trained rebels. As the artillery rounds fell on the base, the tanks opened up on the defenses and buildings of the base itself, and some infantary machine guns provided covering fire.

Rebel Troops (http://www.ruvr.ru/files/Image/RUSSIA/chechnya/Chechen_fighters.jpg)

As they did, around a hundred rebel troops rushed out of the forest towards the base. It should be taken within minutes - more vehicles and rebels were on their way to an airbase further east, which would be a tougher nut to crack.

Racoon City Sewers, 0530 Hours

A full company of rebel troops had been hiding out in the sewers since the night before, trying to avoid all contact with the local populace and police forces. Finally, after 14 hours underground, a runner arrived telling them it was time to begin the attack. They were right under the city hall and police station, their first targets.

Simultaneously, they popped up from manhole covers and service buildings all over a two block radius, terrifying passers by. And so, the assault began. They tossed grenades and tear gas in the upper windows of the city hall and police stations, and rushed the lower levels. The guards, to be honest, stood no chance. Automatic weapons cut the early morning silence, and the grenade blasts could be heard all over the city.

And so, it began.

Murska AB, Kiev Oblast, 06:45

"As you now know, gentlemen, the rebels have launched a full attack on Raccoon City. estimated manpower is somewhere between 70 to 200 people. A transmission from a helicopter base in the northern area of the city said that they have a number of BMP IFV's, more then likely left over from their botched attempt at taking over Naszran. As of now, we assume all contact has been lost with the police station, and that the city hall next door is the rebels assumed GHQ. Due to logistical reasons, the 76th Air Assault Division will be the first to arrive. We are going to split the group into 4 separate companies; A,B,C, and D.

"A" Company will drop to the southwest of the city, and engage the enemy from the rear.
"B" Company's task is to set up a defensive line at the airfield and hold it
"C" Company will be dropped at the foot of the mountains to prevent a possible escape.
"D" Company will be dropped into the woods and proceed to A Company's location.

Each Company will be dropped with two BMD-2, save for B Company who will be dropped with a Sprut-SD 2S25 for heavy fire support. After "B" company has et up a defensive line, Armor will be inbound"

On the tarmac sat three AN-124 and an AN-22, all being fueled. Approximately 80 paratroopers could fit in each plane along with a single BMD-2 in each plane. The soldiers were busy loading up spare magazines for their AKS-74 rifles, when Lt. Col. Samylenka approached them. "We have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that our government leader is going to seek help from foreign nations. The bad news is that the rebels have the central part of the city under control." He then gave a quick salute, and returned to his office. An Officer then made the order to load up the aircraft. "engine check"

"all engines are go"

"copy that, you are clear to take off"

The first of four aircraft began to take off.

-In the green zone between Naszran and Raccoon-

Activity at the makeshift HQ was heavy. Soldiers were loading up the artillery pieces, along with the tanks they had at their disposal. The artillery detachment had a total of 13 howitzers along with a handful of T-62M tanks and a ZSU-23-4. They would be reenforced by a Motor Rifle Devision and the 5th Guards Tank Company, who were equipped with the T-90 MBT.

Official Communication:

In the early hours of the 16th of May, rebel forces launched an attack on Raccoon City, which is in the northern reaches of the country not too far from Naszran, which as you know, recently was the site of a three week long battle which took the lives of many.

The government of Chernobyl-Pripyat is requesting aid in combating the rebel forces in the city, due to the lack of available transport aircraft. The Army estimates that it will be at least a week before we can mobilize soldiers to the area.

Helicopter base-

The attack on the base came as a surprise to the security personnel there. In total, there was about 40 people on base, and a little under half were civilians. Due to the fact that the base was more or less a civilian helipad, there was no need for the guards to have heavy weapons. The equipment they had were a bunch of AK-47's from the 1950's,various handguns, an RPD light machine gun and a few HE grenades.

The first rebels than ran past the burning gate had gotten mowed down by a hail of gun fire, which startled the rest making them pull back behind a BMP they had brought in. It would at least be an hour before the paratroopers arrived, and they were limited with ammo supplies...

Meanwhile, the paratroopers where in route to the city. Because they didnt know if the rebels had any anti-aircraft guns, the planes would spread apart from each other and release their payloads within seconds of each other.

"B COMPANY, PREPARE FOR DROP".

All 80 paratroopers of B Company stood up and lined up at the door. The flight crew in the cargo bay would release the BMD-4 they have with them once they began to jump. When the time came, the trooper at the front opened the door and they began exit the plane, and the rear cargo door opend, realeasing a drag-chute which pulled the BMD out.

It took them a moment to realize that they were off target; instead of landing at the helicopter base, they ended up a few clicks west. Even where they landed, they became under enemy fire from the woods near by. Six VDV troopers were killed in that hit-and-run attack. "Everyone stay on guard, we aren't too far from the helicopter base. where's the BMD?"

"Engine problems. should have it up and running in a few minutes."

They waited until the armor was operable, and a few men climbed on top.
Another group found some ZIL 6x6 trucks, left behind because they had no armor. They were operable, so the remaining troopers loaded up inside the trucks and began their advance on the base.

The Helicopter Base

It had been no contest, really. Within ten minutes, the base was completely over run. Petran stood, providing the logistics for the incoming rebels - unprecedented numbers were moving from woods and hills all around, around a thousand armed men and woman. A column of two BMP's, a T-72, a variety of anti tank weaponary and five trucks was on its way into the city, to link up with the rebels there. They had secured the city hall and police station with little resistance, and were digging in around the surrounding neighbourhoods.

The helicopter base itself was a hive of acvitity. Four BMP's, four trucks and two armored cars were moving off to assault an airbase slightly east of their position. The light artillery and mortars had been relocated to the helicopter base - soon the shelling of the airbase would begin. All around, men hurriedly dug trenches and set up machine gun positions. They would not retreat without a fight.

In the woods, a small force had been left behind to hold up any troops moving to retake the helicopter base. The sound of transport aircraft filled the early morning skies. Petran's radio chirped.

"Eagle, eagle, this is Wolf! Paratroopers, all over the place! Some have landed near the woods, others all around the city!"
"Roger. Hold your ground, and radio for orders."

And so it had began. If the troops in the wood's were forced to retreat, they would fall back to the helicopter base. The next retreat point was the city - they would hold the city at all costs. Behind him, the artillery and mortar fire on the airbase began. It would be another twenty minutes before that attack began - they would easily hold until then.

"Major Wilkins suggested that we travel on foot from here on out, it's likely that they have ambush points set up."

They then spread out on opposite sides of the road and continued towards the helicopter base. A small group that was ahead of the rest spotted the would be ambushers. They were equipped with a variety of weapons; AK-74's, AKM's, M4 carbines, a few RPG's and some weapons that Cpl. Vasiliev had never seen before, obviously from a foreign country..

Vasilev shouldered his rifle at the radio man, while the other soldiers took aim at different rebels. Once one the soldiers took his shot, the rest followed. Only one of the rebels was able to return fire, seeing as he was the only one not with the group due to a bathroom break. The paratroopers scavenged through the rebels equipment, deciding to take the RPG's with them, AK-74 ammo and the radio.

"Why bring the radio?"

"With it, we'll be able to hear their communications. it's a civilian radio, so we can't just take down the frequency."

The radio in question, was a police scanner. For obvious reasons, it was quite except for chatty rebels.

Vasiliev and the others waited until the rest of the group and the BMD caught up. the helicopter base was just over that hill..

OOC:

Just a pointer, its not really traditional role play to post other peoples losses. For example, you could probably say "They spotted a rebel position and opened fire", but not "They spotted a rebel position and opened fire, killing them all."

It works out better =)

By the way, heres a plan of the rebel positions:

http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/3268/helibasewn0.png

They are advancing towards the airfield, remember. Strength at the heli base is about one hundred men.

IC:

Any rebel's in the forest who had not seen the paratroops coming certainly heard the exchange of gunfire, followed by the sound of the BMD. They cocked their rifles in their slit trenches and waited. The paratroops moved into view, moving at right angles to them towards the helicopter base. The twenty or so men opened up, a mixture of fire from AK's, PK's and grenade launchers. Three men volley fired RPG's towards the BMD, firing out of their trenches.

A young rebel radio'ed Petran the news.

"Enemy advancing towards your position! Strength one company, with a BMD! We're going to ha....."

A bullet to the head killed him instantly.

When the rebels open fired from the trenches the BMD was just peaking over the hill; there was no way it depress it's 30mm cannon low enough to kill any rebels that were entrenched. the RPG's they had fired took out a tread and the engine, in way that it would have to be abandoned. Many of the paratroopers began to fire upon the trenches, and into the woods, where one of the RPG's came from. the other paratroopers moved back behind the hill.

"Ok, we have two trenches at our 12, and a possible trench at our 9."

"I would suggest we flank them, but we don't know how many men they have in the area. Where is A Company? They have the SPG, don't they?"

the ground crews had loaded the wrong vehicle into B's plane.

The trooper with one of the radios then called up the other company's.

"Arrow, this is Bear, what is your status?"
"Bea--his is Arro-- we ar--n the southe-art of the cit-- the rebe--re dug in prett--ood."

it began to rain shortly after.

The fire from the woods was withering. Grenades and automatic fire had thinned their number, and those remaining were withdrawing one by one. The paratroops had taken cover and it was time to fall back. In all, thirteen made the sprint back, further into the woods. At the helicopter base, final preperations were being made. If the company wasn't totally eliminated, they should be severely weakened. The base would not fall.

Meanwhile, the assault troops were reaching the airbase. One mile out, they made their final preperations before the attack began. The airbase was basically a large rectangle - three quarters of the force would sweep round to flank the north of the base, while the armor and heavy weapons would suppress the airbase defences. It had been shelled extensively for twenty minutes - little was known about the effects the shelling was having.

[ooc; B Company from the Paratroop division, they were dropped with a Sprut-SD 2S25. the troopers themselves are going to be shooting from the upper levels of the terminal]

"Casualty report?"

"20 dead, several wounded, BMD is destroyed. the fire from the woods has ceased."

"That leaves us with about 60 of us.. how are we on ammo?"

"We have enough to shoot it out with the enemy in the helicopter base providing we can hit the trenches with grenades."

GP-30's are rather troublesome to use, even for well trained soldiers.

"what did you scavenge from the corpses in the woods?"

"assorted sub-machine guns, grenades, some 5.45 ammunition, an extra PK machine gun."

The task of breaking through to the helicopter base would be a difficult task.
Their plan was to use the squad snipers and PKM gunners to cover the riflemen from the hill, while they crawl.

"Everyone knows what their task is, right? I want full coverage on those enemy trenches."

Vasiliev and six others were dug in along with the snipers and machine gunners to cover their flanks.

The attack began.

19-05-2008, 21:53
The rebel's were pinned down straight away by the viscious sniper, machine gun and grenade fire. Bodies were shredded by shrapnel and the heavy bullets, young men stood shocked by the mailstrom of mud and dirt around them.

Return fire was slow to muster. Machine gun fired raked the hill and some rebels fired RPG's towards the snipers. More men were being cut down by the second. And, in the heavy fire, no-one saw the main paratroop force crawling towards their position. Petran was curled up in one of the buildings, yelling into the radio trying to find out what the hell was going on.

"Fuck, they reacted so QUICKLY. The airbase must fall...."

He picked up his AK, fired a burst out the window, and tried to get the City Hall on the radio. He would have to leave for the city centre, soon. They had secured the station, gas station, high school and were currently setting huge demolition charges on the substation.

At the airport, the assault was proceeding as planned. They were receiving fire from the terminal, so the BMP's started shelling the upper floors, and 12.7mm MG's mounted on trucks started shredding the paratroopers positions. The main force was getting fired at from bunkers and the main gate, and was beginning to get pinned down. The BMP's were attempting to take out the bunkers one by one, using HEAT shells.
Chernobyl-Pripyat
20-05-2008, 22:51
The paratroopers plan was going unexpectedly well. Just feet from the trenches, they fixed their bayonets. Up on the hill, one of the machine gunners had been killed by an RPG, while several others had been wounded by the same blast. When the machineguns ran dry, the troopers swarmed into the trenches, while some stormed into buildings.

Over the radio, Vasiliev heard that A Company was having trouble, apparently due to enemy armor. If they could capture those artillery pieces, they could help them out..
Agroprom
22-05-2008, 15:41
It was all over at the helicopter base. The trench was more or less gone - the remaining rebels threw grenades at the paratroopers, or lay on the trench floor firing madly at anyone that came their way. In the buildings, it was much the same - rebels pulled the pins out grenades, waited until para's entered the building, and then blew themselves up as the enemy entered the room.

The rebels at the guns dropped C4 and grenades down the gun tubes and tried to wreck the aiming pieces. They were all rendered un-usable, just before the rebels were gunned down. Grenades were thrown in helicopters and vehicles, sending huge fireballs into the sky.

Petran was trapped in a building, and could think of only one way out. He tossed a smoke grenade outside, and made a dash for nearby UAV. He dived in, gunned the engine, and made a dash for the centre of town. Bullets skipped all around his as he rallied the off roader out of the base.

24-05-2008, 07:27
The battle for the helicopter base had been a bloody one. Only a hand-full of paratroopers survived of the initial 80 from B Company. Vasiliev and the other soldiers up on the hill were the only ones not wounded, and had gone down to the field to finish off any dying rebels, and to scavenge ammo.

The troopers who were to secure the now destroyed artillery pieces managed to get the radio back up and were informing HQ that they had the helicopter base under control.

"Falcon, this is Bear, we have secured the helicopter base. Heavy casualties sustained, area is clear from rebels, over."

"Copy that Bear, sending in back up unit with gunship support. Also friendly armor is inbound, ETA 20 minutes with supporting infantry, over"

Shortly after, a column of T-80U's and BTR-70's arrived from the north, and an Mi-26 had landed at the base and was dismounting the extra paratroopers.

The Mi-24 gunships had gone to deal with the rebels at the airfield, who's numbers should have been thinned by now despite the heavy casualties inflicted upon A company.

The armor column's plan was to attack the rebels at the airfield from behind, with armor being priority targets. The main guns were loaded with Sabot rounds, although some had HE-Frag rounds to be used against infantry

During the assault, the Mi-24 gunships would attack from the sides, prioritizing on AT infantry and other soft targets. The infantry would tag behind the tanks and cover them.

Meanwhile, near the forward command post...

Not too far from the city, a large number of artillery pieces were massed behind the cordon. The vast majority of them were BM-21 rocket trucks, a handful of towed 105mm guns, two S-23 180mm cannons, and four OTR-21 "Scarab" launchers; which were loaded with chemical agents. The soldiers who were operating the weapons weren't too sure of using gas on the city, but it was a direct order from the government..

"Hey, whats in these things, anyway?"

"I dunno, probably VX or something."

"Christ, VX?? how long do we have to wait until we fire them?"

"I assume right after the Ural's run dry. Sooner the better, i don't want to be near this stuff"

While the two soldiers were chatting, an officer was setting the coordinates for the scarab's, two within the center of the city, one in the housing project areas, and another in the commercial district."

"You two, are the missile ready?"

"yes, should we activate them?" The missiles would have to be aimed before firing."

"Comrade, won't this kill a lot of innocents?"

"Unfortunately. Now get them ready, the barrage is going to start soo-"

The BM-21's began launching rockets in random directions into Raccoon, while the towed pieces were to "aim" at taller buildings.

The missiles would launch in five minutes.

The Spire, Magna Polis

Marshal T. "Tootall" Briggs was walking through the Army Headquarters Floor #5 in the Spire, practically being smothered in arms holding reports on conflicts taking place. Floor #5 was the highest, and as such, was where the top officials of the GWO Federal Army had their main offices. Briggs towered over the officers following at his fame-grabbing height of 7'5", which also was how he got his nickname, "Tootall."

He glanced over the report of an Anarchist uprising in some nation called Chernobyl-Pripyat. He was intrigued, and stopped in the hallway, clearly in thought. He was going to send troops, though he didn't really care about the people in Chernobyl-Pripyat. He went to his office to phone GRIFFITH-II...

At the Airbase

The troops had finally gained access to the airport. Which meant they could bring out their secret weapon. One of the rebels went into the back of a BMP, and carried out a flamethrowe. Within five minutes, a group of rebels were systematically grenading and flaming the airbase buildings, and armored patrols were going around the rest of the airbase.

One of the men heard the sound of gunships closing in. That couldn't be good.

In Racoon City

Buildings were exploding all around. The gas station went up in a huge explosion, and the city hall was caved in at one end. One of the taller buildings, a banking building, was being pounded by artillery. Men and woman were fleeing out of it, scared for their life. Rubble was falling from the sky, and shells hitting the streets.

As Petran drove into the town, a rocket bombardment smashed the buildings around him. Rebels were hiding everywhere - in buildings, in the sewers, in cellars. Everywhere artilelry couldn't hit them.

Not that it would make much difference.

Armor column, south of the airbase

One of the tank commanders could see the black smoke from the burning buildings, and assumed the base was almost lost.

"all units close hatches, target is in range. Gunner, load HE-Frag round."
"copy that, loading round."

"Tank 4, load HEAT round, enemy armor sighted."

The T-80's began to fire upon the enemy BMP's, and around the same time the gunships began firing upon the rebels that they saw.

"Arrow, take out that enemy T-72."

"Copy, gunner, use AT-6"

it was unlikely that any of the paratroopers at the airbase survived.

Raccoon City limits

The BM-21's had run dry and were reloading for a second barrage.
One of the S-23's had a jam with the shell extractor and wasn't firing, so the shells on the bank building had ceased for the time being.

"Scarabs are ready, begin launch."

The missiles took off and were in route to the city, taking off in seperate directions to hit the predesignated target.

"Do you think the international community is going to care about VX being used in a densely populated area?"
