Early yesterday morning, the Royal Admiralty chose to unveil the Navy's latest project in unconventional warfare, the Special Mammal Warfare Group (SMWG). Though the SMWG has only just been declassified, it has in fact been in the works for the past several years.

Run by the Royal Navy through the Naval Special Warfare Command, the SMWG is a program that studies and exercises the military application of maritime mammals, in both combat zones and non-combat zones. Dolphins and Seals of various subspecies, though not the only mammals in the program, are the primary types of animals utilized in the SMWG.

For the most part, the mammals in the program are still under study, however, they have been put to use in several applications. Among these tasks are reconnaissance; personnel and equipment recovery; mine detection and clearance; and force protection in terms of ships, harbors, and coasts; as well as demolitions missions.

Though the Special Mammal Warfare Group has attracted some attention from the media and the animal rights community, due to theorized abuse of animal welfare. However, the Royal Navy would like to take a moment to announce that these ideas are unfounded. The Special Mammal Warfare Group utilizes the highest levels of care and non-harmful training methods. The SMWG is manned only by sailors and officers fully-qualified in animal care and training, as well as various methods of diving; and oversight is provided by Her Majesty's Environmental Office, the Naval Special Warfare Command, the Parliamentary Committee on Animal Rights, and the Parliamentary Committee on Military Affairs, with select observers from the Royal Association for the Protection of Animals.

The Special Mammal Warfare Group is comprised of seven Seal & Dolphin Special Warfare Teams, known colloquially as Seal Teams, numbered One through Seven. Each Team consists of four squadrons that are manned by demolitions and special operations-qualified Royal Navy Beach Commandos, with additional training in animal-handling. Each squad consists of five boat crews with Mark V Special Operations Crafts, equipped with rigid-hulled inflatable boats, and ten seals and ten dolphins, each paired up with a single, dedicated, Royal Navy Beach Commando trainer.
