The only ones she had encountered were Mekayla - an imported model - and the fairly rudimentary central AI of the space station, little more than a glorified voice interface.

Genjiko recognised the style of suit exremely easily and replied "thank you Admiral. It is possible to build a life size persai and they're about my size and usually well proportioned back home. However for the purposes of training a small model will suffice as well as being helpful to yourself. They can hold a lot of information, look after your diary and comm calls, act as a library computer and thats even before their AI personality comes into play.

You might build a full size model at some point in the future but without the AI personality it would just be a large doll."

She said something to Mei in Kirisuban and she took out a Kirsuban tricorder from her jacket pocket ready to run a slide show. Pictures of the first two Persai created appeared. One young girl who looked around 14 years old and another who was round 17. Both were extremely cute as the pictures were projected against a blank wall for all to see.

Yuko woke up after a few hours sleep and groaned in pain. She still felt very sore and took the chance to get a relaxing bath before she slipped on a sleeping kimono and rested.

She wouldn't forget today in a hurry but she knew the babies were in good hands right now.

The class listened intensely, the two separately seated female officers - their nametags identifying them as lieutenant Nukari and ensign Bauman - busily typing their datapads, many of the others taking notes as well. Even the "hentai", ensign Erik Norkio seemed to pay attention - though he would have clearly enjoyed a more... thorough... presentation of the human-sized persai.

Training these men and women into proficient 'smart AI' programmers would definitely be a challenge, especially when at least one of them - the man in Asian-cut garb, engineer Sakari Waris - was already proficient in designing and building 'dumb AI'. He would probably have to 'unlearn' a lot of his old training, if he wanted his own personal AI - and his later works, of course - to be little more than palm computers with a glorified voice synthetizer.

As a training-and-building schedule was approved, Professor Watanabe could really get underway with her new duties - she was both a mentor for a new breed of AI builders in the Principality, as well as the foreman in using Mekayla's parameters to build siblings for her.

During the two months she had stayed in New Turka, she had been kept busy with various tasks: Talking with the ship engineers about the power needs and physical requirements of the AI, including holographic projectors and power couplings to make the new AI actually control the vessel, if need be. Studying Mekayla to better understand her (the flirtatious AI was certainly enjoying thse moments). Teaching her class of ten on the principles of 'smart' AI programming - with varied but generally positive results.

Still, while New Turka was a military base, life there had its moments of relaxation as well. The recreation areas were quite impressive, with even small areas turned into gardens and small groves with an artificially-made sky. And every Friday a special 'shore leave ship' was standing by to take those who had been granted that privilege to the nearest civilian colony, that of Vestal in the Astra Princeps system. It was an agrarian colony of less than ten million inhabitants, but as something of a regional capital it received most of the basic amenities that came with that status.

Genjiko and Mei had settled in nicely making full use of the facilties. Genjiko especially liked the pool and the sauna and Mei of course had her lover to spend time with. Mei had also been a regular member of the knife fighting club.

The project and training were proceding nicely and the mixed resuts from her students were to be expected. Everybody was different after all but they were all heading in the right direction.

Genjiko had a few days of shoreleave built up by now and she was seriously pondering taking them but there was so much work to do..

Some of the R&D people were also avid pool players, and Genjiko usually had little trouble finding a partner for a game or two.

Mei, on the other hand, had been initiated into the knight-fighting club - partly thanks to Mathias who was also a member. As she trained and fought with the other members, she could see that knife-fighting, or "blade-rattling" as some of the Principality troops referred to it, was a curious mix of old and new. Blades ranged from bulk-produced training knives to beautifully carved and clearly hand-made blades that some of the members sported. The rules of each fight were clearly set up, whether to first blood, 'mock blood' (where the winner was the first to press the blade against a killing spot) or until the opponent either surrendered or passed out (which was exceedingly rare), whether only the blade was allowed to touch the opponent or punching and kicking were also allowed... The members also told that in times past knife-fighting had also been the Principality's style of dueling, and the rules had evolved from there.

Some of the knife-fighters actually sported the cuts they had received as tokens of memorable fights, but a medical crew was always present in case of (rare) serious injuries - or just to apply nanomimetic cream that didn't even leave a scar. Mathias had also given Mei private lessons in this style of combat after-hours - although their more heated training sessions were sometimes concluded in the bed or in the showers; once even on the training arena itself.

"Ouch!" Mekayla's sudden yelp roused Genjiko from her thoughts. Floating near Genjiko in her cathedral-like central chamber, the Ilmatar's AI pouted as Genjiko replaced the delicate programming grid she had knocked loose, thus making part of Mekayla's form disappear. when Yuko woke up she would find Natasha asleep next to her after Wolf had told to get some rest and stop worrying,after their fun in the shower as Natasha was spent both physically and emotionally

The message from the Admiral was certainly something out of the ordinary: apparently the Primogen, the prototype LYONESSE-5 vessel was ready to begin her first trial runs. After much deliberation and haggling it had even been fitted with a Neo Kirisuban cloaking device. And while the vessel according to the attached schematics was not yet FTL-capable, the people at the Bovillia Shipyards wanted the professor to be present during the first in-system trial run. They also requested, if possible, for a rudimentary 'dumb' AI to be fitted for testing the ship's naviogation and combat abilities.

The launch would be in little over a month - and added to the message was a pre-approved shore leave request for Professor Genjiko Watanabe and Ensign Mei Kutaka, dated to be used within the next two weeks. The reason: "As recognition of a job well-done and to offer You what I believe is a much-needed breather". Included in the shore leave requests was the contact information of the Far Fleet local headquarters in Vestal, in case the two women would need a direct passage from Astra Princeps System to Bovillia System.

"Be nice, okay? I'd hate to see you get my little sister's or brother's new body all banged up", she whispered, tilting her head.

"I'll be careful with your little sibling but the Admiral wants combat tests as well" Genjiko replied. She noticed the attempt at a hug which passed through her.

While waiting for the shuttle along with other crew members they were both in what passed as civilian clothes back home. Casual and comfortable was the main theme for the balmy Neo Kirisuban homeworlds but local conditions had to be factored for as well.

There were several possible locations that the two Neo Kirisubans and their "escort", the Principality lieutenant commander could visit during their shore leave, as evidenced by the information package Mekayla had assembled for them.

Vestal City itself was a settlement of three million people, and the cultural and civilian government center of this region of space. By default all military personnel were given lodgings at a hotel in the Government District, but other choices were available as well. Vestal City offered all the modern conveniences of a modern city, ranging from sports and nightlife to culture and art. That would also be the shuttle's destination.

From Vestal City there were maglev train and atmospheric airplane connections to other holiday spots on the planet. The Kalaisa Archipelago near the equator was a popular destination for those preferring sun and the sea, while the Rukiine Plains offered chances for more rugged activities, ranging from licensed hunting to horseriding and observing the local wildlife. As a whole, the planet Vestal consisted of two continents, most of the population and activities available in the northern continent, while the more mountainous southern continent was the center for planetary mining operations.

Attention, shore leave shuttle Welser will begin boarding in thirty minutes, the station's central AI announced as they were waiting in the lounge area. Most people present there were military, but also a number of scientists had decided to take advantage of the summer season in Vestal's more populated areas. So having at least some people they knew Genjiko and Mei they disembarked with them. The next stop would be the seaside and this was something the Neo Kirisuban's were well used to.

The voyage to Vestal was a relatively short one: the star systems in this segment of space belonged to the Infinitus Tractus cluster, a tightly-knit formation of several hundred stars with relatively short distances between them. The Hermitage system was a military zone, but once the Welser exited hyperspace, the verdant green-and-blue world of Vestal appeared in view, her orbit a-buzz with transport and passenger planes.

The planet itself was very much earth-like, but the native flora and fauna was apparently quite large in size, as the two Neo Kirisubans could well see during their journey. The central colonisation zone of Vestal City was a heavily agrarian one, though the City itself had all the markings of a major city despite her size - less than half of what Tokyo on Earth had been at the turn of the third millennium. From the space port the Neo Kirisubans and their companions - Mei tightly held under Matthias's arms, as if he wanted to make every single man on the way jealous - boarded the maglev train for Kalaisa Archipelago.

The train ride would last almost as long as the shuttle flight, but at least the train was comfortable, and the views spectacular. Running on a strong railing high above the thick forest, a calm computer voice was narrating the biological wonders of this planet to those who placed a small Bluetooth in their ear. Apparently the native lifeforms were mostly reptilian, and the holo presentation notified that in Kalaisa there was a chance of seeing one of the rarest creatures of the planet: the Iku sea dragon, whose mating season was beginning. Usually these leviathans remained in the ocean depths, but they came to the surface to begin their mating ceremonies.

Mei was clearly enjoying being this close to Mathias and looking forward to the fun they'd have later on once they'd settled into their hotel.

Genjiko was taking in the narration since a scientist was rarely of duty. She was clearly relaxed wearing a lot more casual clothes than her students would normally see her in.

Soon the Maglev train reached its destination, the recreational community of Sunhaven. The township was small, but clearly intended for holiday purposes. Restaurants, nightclubs, hotels... all built on the steep cliffs overlooking the azure bay and the Kalaisa Archipelago in the distance. Most of the buildings were pure white or in natural colours, reflecting the verdant surroundings in which they had been built. Some of the more ambitious clubs had even built their facilities on the thick branches of the massive trees that loomed over the cliffs. White sand of the beaches was beckoning, and sun-tanned local residents were calling tourists and vacationers for tours at the archipelago. Scuba diving, fishing, or simply travelling to the maze-like archipelago of towering stone islands, topped with lush plant life. Some of the locals even claimed knowledge of where the Iku would be rising to the surface...

Yuko watched the ceremony for the fallen warriors from Wolf's side, Natasha beside her. She was also quiet and thoughtful. Her own people revered the souls of the departed as well with them both warrior peoples.

Mathias was certainly doing his best to take advantage of the situation, right away taking Mei on a stroll along the long promenade, to look at the bazaars and shops that lined the pristine streets. The holiday season was on, so there was no lack of female - or male, for that matter - beauty for one to feast one's eyes on. Clearly the Principality populace was more than just the organized military population of Hermitage. The local police held a presence, of course, but even their uniforms were light, clearly implying a relaxed atmosphere in the area.

"So, what do you want to do?" Mathias asked, his hand caressing Mei's side as they strolled down the street. "There's plenty to do here. Diving, naturewatching, sunbathing, hiking, surfing, swimming... and I hear that there's a nice nudist beach not far from here."

Meanwhile in her hotel room Genjiko had a chance to see the aesthetic qualities of the "Paradise City": compared to the militaristic conditions at New Turka, the smooth, warm colours of the room and its furniture, and the rolling lines of window panes and doorways was a nice change of pace. A cool breeze blew through the open balcony doors, and from time to time distant, undulating calls could be heard from the sea. The Iku were indeed close, and for a biologist that would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Genjiko being a scientist would chose diving to see what was under the waves. She also dressed for the heat settling for a red tankini top and a short red skirt over her black bikini bottoms.

So she headed to the beach to try and get booked onto an underwater tour.

The wide, crescent-shaped beach was by no means silent or deserted when Genjiko made her way across the white sands. People sunbathing, young men and women playing volley ball, children playing in the sand... the beach was abuzz with sounds and sights, and where the azure waves crashed into the beach, young men wearing nothing but loose swimming trunks sat or stood by long, decorated canoes, hollering and offering rides to the archipelago, or to the sightseeing ships hovering at the edge of the lagoon.

Suddenly Genjiko could hear a whistle, and from behind one of the dragonheaded canoes a young man, probably in his early twenties appeared. He was tall and well-formed, his skin the shade of bronze, his long hair blonde, almost white with the touch of the sun. He wore very little, only red swimming shorts, a diving bracelet on his left wrist and a strange little neck piece: a serrated tooth, about the length of a finger, dangling in a synth-leather string.

"Looking to go diving, miss? I can take you to the Sea Horse, if you like", he suggested and threw his hand towards the open sea. He pointed at one of the vessels at the mouth of the lagoon. Unlike the others, the Sea Horse seemed to be an actual boat, not a modified hovercraft with hover fields keeping it from touching the surface. Compared to the sleek, white or sea-blue hovercraft she looked practically archaic, floating gently in the waves.

"They're going to look for the Iku soon. Captain Hansen says she knows a place where they appear regularly."

"Now that was a surprise", Mathias purred teasingly, stealing a kiss from Mei's lips. "Come on, it shouldn't be far. Just over the ridge."

With that, Mathias began to lead Mei up the ridge that formed the lagoon's land-side rims. Under the forest canopy, the city was both built and grown, Asian-style organic building used alongside with plasteel and ceramite. The hustle and bustle of the beach turned into colours of the rainbow, with brightly-coloured marquises hanging over shop fronts, with fruit, seafood, diving and hiking equipment and local handicrafts sold. Clearly there was a native population as well, with many of the men and women clearly more tanned the otherwise pale-skinned colonists and soldiers that Mei had thus far observed in New Turka and here on Vestal. The warm climate favoured loose clothing, with sarongs and loose tunics being most common sights. The paved road snaked up the hillside, with hover vehicles humming calmly along, carrying supplies and tourists.

Surprisingly, many of the locals also seemed to employ the local fauna in their daily life: alongside hovercrafts large, iguana-like lizards were used as both mounts and beasts of burden. No wonder, Mei could see, when one of such lizard riders brought his mount to the side of one of the giant trees. Sinking its nails into the thick trunk, the lizard began to climb up the tree, deftly like a spider on the wall.
