The First Day (Disaster Thread, MT)

Boico
01-05-2008, 17:22
2:25am, Vradian, West Boico

Izaad was woken by the light on the ceiling creaking as it swung to and fro. The shaking stoped, the started again but faster, more violent this time. It stopped again. Then it started again, but the entire house started to shake, a rumbling sound eminated from the ground, he could hear screams outside. Then dust fell on his head, he looked up as the ceiling fell onto him.

Houses and buildings were colapsing, an almighty bang could be heard as a gas main had broken and the gas had reached a flame. A fire started amongst the rubble, more and more quakes. Some people wrre killed outright by the colappsing buildings, others were traped in the rubble, then burned alive as the flames reached them. After about 15 minutes, the quakes stopped. About two thirds of the city was destroyed, yet more would be as the flames continued to spread out.

One hour later, The Presidential Mannor, Creipa

Maria couldn`t sleep. It was her first ay as President. She was reading 'A History of Boico' by Nisilla Quiad. She thought about all of the other presidents who`d slept in this room, about the fateful night Jack Odrinhow had been woken to the news of the rebels.

There was a knock at the door. "Come in" Maria wonderd who would be knocking on her bedroom door at this time in the morning.

"Mrs President, I have some bad news..." Maria`s face fell. What was he going to tell her ?

"Go on"

"... There`s been an earthquake in Vradian. Over half the city has been destroyed, there`s still a fire raging there too. We... we don`t know how many people are dead yet, but we estimate around 200,000."

"Dear God!" Maria couldn`t help but think of all those people, the faces of the dead.

8:00am, BNN News

"... around 200,000. We now go straight to the Senate Hall were the President is just beginning a press confrence about the earthquake."

The screen flicked from the news presenter to Maria.

"Today at around 2:25 in the morning, an earthquake occured in the city of Vradian. We cannot release the exact details of the disaster, but I will say this. Please, if you have friends or family in the city, do not attempt to go there. The M9 to Vradian is closed. If you want to try and find out how your friends or family are, please call 0500 629 859. Thank you for your time."

The screen flicked back to the news presenter again.

"If you are just joining us, this is the news that there has been an earthquake in Vradian, the first since 106BC..."

“Good,” Said Mr. Henry Richardson, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “It appears, my friends, that Boico has made the decision to allow us in.”
“Oh?” Replied one of the other Directors, reclining comfortably in his chair against the large mahogany table where the Board Members met each day. “Well this is most excellent news. Shall I mobilize the “aid workers”?” He grinned.
“Oh yes. Yes you shall,” Richardson replied, his eyes growing dark and a malevolent smile etching itself into his face. “Send II and III Corps. They should be sufficient to do the job. Transport them in large C2 Cargo Freighters. They’ll not know what is within them until it’s already too late.”
“Absolutely. I’ll get on that right away. It appears we’ll soon have a new industrial base, eh?”
“Quite.”

The ships deployed the following day. Within their holds were millions of State Guardsmen, the elite warriors of the Catilio Corporation. Field Marshal Benjamin Norris had already drawn the strategic operations orders for the two corps being deployed. They would make a landing at the port where the 1st Motor-Rifle Regiment of 5th State Guards Motor-Rifle Division, III Corps would be the forces vanguard. Emerging from their respective ships, they would secure the port, buying time for the other Corps to disembark and make landing. The 9th State Guards Armour Division would then spear head the assault out of the port and into the surrounding area, followed suit by the rest of the army. Engineer Brigades, deployed along with the forces, would construct airfields to host Corporate Air Force units, allowing them to have heavy close air support and tactical fighter support. Initially, helicopters and etc would be the only support available, though by the second day of the invasion air superiority should be achieved. Due to the lack of tactical fighter support, numerous additional anti-aircraft artillery units were being delivered as well, they would be deployed rapidly after landing so as to become combat ready before the enemy could respond. They were sure that there would be a window of some three to four hours before the enemy knew precisely what was occurring at that port. Afterwards they could anticipate massive response, but until then the Corporate Guardsmen would almost certainly have absolute surprise and the general upper hand. The Boicoian state would be enslaved to the whim of the Board of Directors, and become yet another state tied to the Catilio Corporation.

OOC: Damn, I walked right into that one! Would it be OK if we started a new thread for the invasion?

IC: The scene in Vradian (or were Vradian once stood) was terrible. The rescue staff were still trying to get people out of the wreckage and move the bodies, but the flames of the fire were so intense that some of the bodies were burnt on to the rubble. The fire was mostly under control, still it was burning but only just outside the area in the pipe that the gas had escaped from.

President`s Office, Senate Hall, Creipa

"Madam President, we have reacieved offers of aid from the nation of Markiana and from the Catilio Corporation. Even with this help, it will take years to rebuild Vradian."

"Thank you Yagien, now if you`ll excuse me, I need to get ready for President`s questions." Maria stood up and walked out of the stuffy room. She was shaking, she still couldn`t understand why there wasn`t any warning, how so much destruction could happen in just that short space of time. No doubt the senators would be asking her the same questions...

DAY 2
----------
JAZEEN NAVAL BASE

The once-sedate Naval Base was abuzz with activity. Ordinarily for use by NU members, the empty base had been commandeered to host the flotilla of aid ships heading to Boico. Tractors belched Diesel fumes as they lugged Vehicles and digging equipment towards the four Type-B Cargo Ships. Onboard, crew were guiding the massive dock winches as they loaded their cargo Pallets full of Food and medical supplies. Underdeck, in the hold, prefab shelters were being strapped down for their journey. Fuel tanks were engulfed with Tonnes upon Tonnes of Fuel Oil. Two days later, the NS Vigilant, Temper, and Peace slipped their moorings, steaming as full speed for Creipa, Boico's main port.

Damnit! I walked right into that one. Would it be ok if we started a new thread for the invasion

OOC: Definately dude! Let me post this thread and actually begin the assault. Its more pertinant to whats already begun. Once my plan is unfolded, i.e the bringing up of the battle fleet to support me, I'll post the invasion thread.

The Corporate ships had arrived within sight of the dock. There were numerous ships, however the plan was to slowly trickle into the port with six which would be enough to deliver the 1st State Guards Motor-Rifle Regiment. The Guardsmen had already prepared their battle gear and the initial combat preparations on the part of their officers began. The soldiers needed no pre-battle encouragements, they had each been individually bred, raised, and nurtured for this function. However the Officers, members of the “Capitalist Class”, were not. Nerves were tight as they slowly neared the active port city, and other cargo freighters exited and entered alongside them. Their commander, Colonel James Smith, stood at the command bridge of the ship scanning the port through his binoculars. There were several adjacent empty loading docks which they would make their landing at. Once docked, the plan was to have an infantry battalion rush onto the deck and begin killing each dock-yard worker which they saw. An infantry battalion consisted of two thousand State Guard soldiers, therefore the deck would likely be filled to capacity relatively quickly, so several companies would slip off the deck and onto the dock, finding whatever cover was available. Meanwhile, the rest of the Regiment, four additional infantry battalions, would disembark under the cover of the other unit, and seize the dock yard. Then, attack helicopters stowed inside the cargo holds would activate themselves and lift into the air providing close air support, utilizing their 30 millimeter auto cannons to…discourage any resistance on the part of whatever defensive forces the port had available. Within the hour several Armour Divisions would land as well, providing both battle tank support as well as anti-aircraft artillery disabling any possibility of close air support from their foes respective air forces. With this done, and their position stabilized, the two corps of troops, some three to four million men, would encompass the entire area and formulate a beachhead within the Capital City. Soon thereafter a battle fleet would be assembled quickly with another additional Army Corps, the I Corps, along with several fighter and bomber wings. This would bring the total invasion force to nearly six million troops. It was anticipated that the enemy would likely fall within a month, though attrition of insurgent forces was expected for the following few months. However, the Catilio Corporate Doctrine for dealing with such behavior was exceptionally…harsh and intolerant, so the enemy would likely come to its senses in a relatively short time.

With that, the ships pulled into their docks. Smith nodded to his Executive Officer (XO), Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Henry, who simply smiled and touched a button on his lapel, activating his collar microphone.

“All units, this is Lieutenant Colonel Henry, execute Operation Irene.” It had begun. The infantry surged onto the deck within seconds and began targeting the dock hands immediately. Machine guns were aligned upon the railings and began chattering with high caliber death. Two companies advanced down the loading ramp which had been engaged after making dock, and they moved forward several meters to gain better fields of fire on the other people moving about the docks. Wide spread confusion broke out, and few knew precisely what was occurring. A harbor is a place of many distinctive noises, with the sounds of construction, repairs to ships being made, crews making merry carousal aboard their ships or across the dock yards, and machinery loading equipment onto ships. However, the sharp retorts of rifles were a new sound, one which few there would have either expected or recognized immediately. This would be their mistake as this slowness to react would cost many their lives, buying the rest of the several million troops more time to disembark from their own respective ships. The helicopters began rising into the air and circling the docks, their main guns and 20mm rockets firing at targets of interest. Police stations in the area were hit as well as other potential threats. The Armour Regiments which were in position lumbered off their own ships and into the loading yards. They began immediately to fire coaxial guns into the scurrying yard workers and moved quickly to position themselves in roads to form armoured road blocks by which no opposing forces could breech. Within the hour an air defense grid would be established and the Corporate Forces would become a metastasizing cancer throughout their Capital.

"Madam President! Madam President!" An aid ran up to the President.

"The aid workers from the Catilio Corporation were, well, they were actually soldiers, they`ve taken control of Creipa port, they`re fighting their way inland!"

Maria couldn`t belive it. Her first day as President and already, there had been a natural disaster and now an invasion.

"Mobalize all available units. I want soldiers placed at every port in Boico and every major town. After that, bring all units here, to the capitol. May God have mercy upon us all."

"But Ma`am, that will take days, maybe even weeks."

"I know, but there is the ceremonial division of the Imperial guard, and the army base just outside the city, it should only take a matter of hours for those to reach us."

HIMS Melzadia, flagship of the Boico Navy, the 1st Imperial Fleet

The Melzadia was the pride of Boico. Nine other ships had bore her name. The first being a Man O` War in 1763. She, and the other 120 ships from a detachtment of the 1st fleet were on there way to Creipa. It would take around an hour to get to Creipa.

With the initial assault phase completed, Colonel Smith ordered the Regiment to disembark from the ship and position itself around the perimeter of the harbor. The rest of II and III Corps followed suit, positioning tanks as mobile road blocks and providing stationary support for the infantry units. Each road way was blocked by an armoured platoon supported by an infantry company, each several ranks deep. Buildings were seized by the State Guard soldiers and garrisoned for cover, and within the hour the entire area became a near impregnable fortress. Enemy police units had attempted to strike back against the State Guards, but were routed quickly as machine guns and assault weaponry cut through their ranks. The roads were red with the blood of Boicoi dead, and thick black smoke billowed high into the air as flames consumed the areas which Corporate Artillery batteries had hit with barrages of fire, or helicopter launched 20mm missiles had struck. The enemy armour units had yet to arrive, but when they did the first challenge they would meet would be those same helicopter craft. Missile pods had been armed with numerous variations of anti-tank ordinance thus would enable them to annihilate the tanks which Boico were going to throw against them.

Air Defense Artillery units had been established around the area of the dock yard, formulating a defensive grid of surface-to-air missiles (SAM), Anti-Air Defense Artillery (AAA), and various other forms of anti-air defensive measures. Intelligence reports had indicated that the enemy navy was dispatching a rapid deployment force to attempt to hit the Corporate Forces while they were still relatively close to the sea, which could result in disaster. Therefore the Corps commanders immediately met within their Headquarters Unit, a repossessed dock warehouse filled with maps of the region, radios, and every necessary piece of equipment to control an operation of this scale and magnitude.

“Now then,” Field Marshal Grant asked calmly, “what do you believe the best course of action is?” Field Marshal Frank Peters considered their options briefly.

“Well, one possibility is to turn our tanks into coastal guns, however I do not know if our SABOT or HEAT rounds can penetrate warship hulls.”

“I do not believe they can Frank,” Grant sighed, then a thought entered his mind. He snickered briefly as the details of the design worked into his mind. “Actually, I have a plan.”

“Oh?” Marshal Frank queried, “Do tell.”

“How many civilians have been arrested, might I ask?”

“I’m estimating that we’ve detained several thousand. The ones we’ve not executed, I mean.”

“Good. Do not kill any more, we need them. Have them chained and sent to these warehouses. We’ll stockade them in electrical wire and guard with a few Flame-troopers. Then, once the enemy fleet appears, we’ll simply inform them of the grievous error they would be making by firing on us. Sure, they can blockade us all they wish, our battle-fleet will arrive tomorrow soon enough to break it, but if they even consider using indirect Naval Artillery fire against us they’ll be killing their own citizenry by the thousand. I do not believe their President will cause a calamity of that sort.” Field Marshal Frank cackled.

“That is positively horrendous! I love it. I’ll make sure my boys know what to do.” Grant nodded in agreement.

“As will mine. Let’s make this happen.” Immediately thereafter, the detained citizenry were shipped back to the harbor to be shackled within the warehouses. In close order, thousands were chained together and surrounded by electrical wire, some ten thousand volts of electricity surging through its fiber-cord every second. If this was not enough of a deterrent to revolt against the State Guardsmen, flame thrower troops were placed at each corner of the wire, ready to let loose upon the people without hesitation. The people would eventually be the slaves of the Corporate State anyhow, thus Field Marshal’s Frank and Grant decided that perhaps these people should…acclimate themselves to bondage before full enslavement.

From the Board of Directors office, all were very pleased by the progress made by the Corporate Armies. Their initial objectives had all been achieved in timely fashion, and some strides had been made such as the virtual elimination of the enemy Navy, as it would almost certainly be unable to carry out offensive maneuvers with the mass number of prisoners taken by Corporate Forces. Field Marshal Benjamin Norris had been summoned up to the Board Room and sat at the head of the table for this meeting.

“Now then,” One of the Directors spoke, “Please enlighten us further as to the plans for this operation.”

“Absolutely,” He responded with a curt nod, “As we speak a battle fleet has been dispatched to the region. It shall arrive sometime tomorrow and reinforce our already very strong positions. We could likely finish them off even now, however in the off chance that they manage to attain assistance I have felt it prudent to maintain a defensive posture for the moment.”
Another Director spoke up, he was an older man with broad shoulders and severe eyes, “Yes, I can agree with this measure. I believe you’ve made a very wise decision.” The others nodded.

“Thank you sir, I appreciate that. It appears to be working. All attempts by the enemy police force to resist us have been more or less a joke, cut apart with ease, and the enemy is dispatching an army Division, probably armour, to assault us, but it should be turned back easily.”

The first Director spoke up again, “Good. Now what of when our Battle fleet arrives?”

Norris nodded. “Right, the enemy is deploying a battle group of its own to attempt to blockade our forces in the port. We’ll slaughter this opposition, land our new forces, and maintain a defensive formation around the port until we’ve moved out and seized more territory. I’m trying to keep as much of the enemy shipping alive as possible, as I’m sure it will be a wise decision to simply make those ships part of the Boico Corporate Forces after we establish a Corporate Board there.” Heads nodded around the room from all thirteen directors. “Anyhow, on that note, if there are no more further questions I shall retire back to the Command Room. I believe we can expect total victory within a relatively short time, and begin the process of making this a new profitable venture for the Catilio Corporation.” And with that, he watched as the Board of Directors rose, he shook hands, and all retired from the Board Room.

Maria was worried. Since the Cyonists took over in the 1980`s, when ever there was a war that caused loss of life inside Boico, the nation had a tendancy to fracture into many rival factions. "Just hope that doesn`t happen now." She muttered to herself.

She was in a car, being driven as fast as possible away from Creipa. Even though the car was almost out of the city, she could still hear the cracks of gun fire and explosions behind her.

Boicoan 5th, 6th and 12th Imperial Guard Divisions.

Even though the members of these units were used to ceremonial duty, they had all fought in some wars, they had too to reach a rank were they could join the Imperial guard. They were runing towards the port. It was a strange sight, around 300-350 soldiers runing down the streets, occasionaly stopping to take cover or reload. Most of them knew that this was the end of them, but they wouldn`t die sitting around, or become a prisoner.

"Quiet!" The captain ordered, "If it looks as though the ground forces can`t handle the invasion force, then all we can do is fire on the port."
