Introduction
Background: First absorbed into the Chinese Empire during the Qin Dynasty, the idyllic but strategic location of Dragons Bay in the South China Sea was ideal for establishing a trading post with Southeast Asia. With the weakening of China in the 3rd century AD, Dragons Bay achieved autonomy while recognising Chinese hegemony. The British colonised the island in the late 19th century, but it was not after the Japanese occupation in the mid-20th century did Dragons Bay begin to grow into a global industrial and finance centre. It achieved independence peacefully in 1987, and is now led by a constitutional monarch ruling through a democratically elected parliament. After two decades of relative isolation from the international scene, it is now eager to engage the world.
