Solshine Station [FT, Open]

Iosef Garen stood on the bridge of the Vilikiyan Cutter-tug with his hands in his labcoat pockets. On the primary monitor, a ship of advanced design released its load of raw iron ore. Such magnificent technology! Only a merchant ship, privately owned, but more advanced than anything the burgeoning nation of Vilikiy or its equally fledgling allies could hope to have in a hundred years.

Unless, of course, they could get their hands on one. In orbit over the immensely crowded Earth, home to billiions upon billions, the crowded nation of The Minarchist Republic of Vilikiy had sacrificed the lives of thousands of spies to gain schematics for tools with which to build the primitive propulsion systems, life support systems, and second-rate ship schematics they had stolen.

The trillions of encreds that had been spent, the years of preparation, and the long chain of power plays which had lead his entire nation to this one moment in time seemed to weigh down on his shoulders.

Chief Administrator for the Orbital Commission, he and his colleagues from several nations had come up with the idea to use the resources of Vilikiy and others to construct what must seem a pathetic and primitive enterprise - a repair station.

"The gall." Iosef laughed to a colleague, the chief researcher for the Orbital Commission, Dr. Ginsburg. "For us to allege we can repair ships like that."

Iosef gestured to the behemoth freighter pulling away after receiving its payment - the entire arsenal of plasma of the primitive Vilikiyan nation.

"It'll be enough to run our orbital manufactories for at least a week." Reasoned Dr. Ginsburg. "We have to take slow, measured steps. The journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step."

"Thousands of tons of raw iron to construct a single-reactor plasma plant." Iosef scoffed. "And to get it we had to wager our entire reserve of plasma. Suppose the schematics are not accurate or the machine tools are not ready. If a single step in this insane plot goes wrong, everything falls apart."

"It is necessary."

"No. It is a bad plan that cannot be altered. This one leaves no room for error, and there will be errors. It hasn't a prayer of working. Even if we manage to keep that plasma plant up and running, we have to establish an entire industrial infrastructure up here, and something, sometime, somehow will go wrong. You have my word on that."

"And I suppose you have a better solution?"

"Of course I don't, but that doesn't mean I approve of this reckless approach."

Ioseph folded his hands in front of him and began massaging the right with his left absent-mindedly. He had only been at this job for the past three years, but his black hair was already being touched by gray from the stress.

All of the competition in this overcrowded space over Earth meant that this repair scheme was doomed to failure from the start, but democracy had to be preserved in the transition from planet to stars if nothing else was. The council had decided against his recommendations that Solshine Services and Repair would be founded, and this trainwreck-in-waiting would go ahead as planned.

Ioseph could only look at the monitor, focusing on his own faint reflection on its smooth surface and laugh.

"Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One. Mark."

"Propulsion test fire... We have ignition. Confirmed acceleration."

"Plasma flow green."

"Armaments green."

"EMS green."

"All vital systems holding. We're in the clear."

The small, light cruiser VSS Liberty surged higher and higher from orbit, out of the sea of ships and commerce over Earth, towards the silvery moon, scarred by dark blanches where heavy mining had taken place before it was protection under international treaties.

Starfleet Admiral Louis Litvinov reclined in the central chair furthest back from the main monitor showing a live feed of what was directly in front of the ship. Somehow it wasn't the same as looking directly at the same thing, but it would suffice as the first armed warship of the Minarchist Republic of Vilikiy.

Its maiden voyage was essential, but it certainly was not glorious. They would navigate successfully and without incident from the Orbital Commission manufactory array to Luna, and then alter its course for a rendezvous with Mars and then Jupiter, and then back. Its three month mission would then be to establish diplomatic contact with stellar powers and possibly acquire new technology.

The ship moved slowly at first, classified as a cutter-tug by more advanced civilizations, The Vilikiyans styled it a light cruiser and threw some meager weaponry onto it.

As the craft whipped around the dark shadow of Luna, the Starfleet Admiral spoke.

"Relay this transmission on a broad-band." He said as regally as he could manage. "This is the VSS Liberty, the first armed starship of the Minarchist Republic of Vilikiy. Our mission is peaceful, and we wish to establish diplomatic contact with the advanced civilizations that receive our transmission. Our mission is of reconnaissance as our relatively primitive civilization seeks to acclimate itself to this new environment. Our leaders wish to convey that while we are not interested in any hand-outs, as this is a chapter in our history that must be written by Vilikiyans, we would welcome with open arms offers of friendship and brotherhood. In these first months in our new environment, we are open to official communication with any faction or nation willing to spare the time of its diplomats. This has been Starfleet Admiral Louis Litvinov with our first official stellar transmission. Thank you for your time and attention. Out."

The Admiral paused, and then spoke once more.

"INS Wardog, The VSS Liberty and the whole of the Minarchist Republic of Vilikiy thanks you for your time and helpful information. OOC: Vilikiy - just wanted to mention that generally FT begins at about FTL tech ( but not always ) - you sound more like PMT ( post modern tech ) if you are just getting beyond the moon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Domionation of Tanaara had plenty of orbital asseest, they had numerous Island Three style habitats (http://www.atddm.com/gift1.htm) and the Tater was connected to planetside by a space elevator also known as a beanstalk. And they were in the middle of colonizing a number of planets found near V838 Mons, some 20,000 LY from earth.
This is the VSS Liberty, the first armed starship of the Minarchist Republic of Vilikiy. Our mission is peaceful, and we wish to establish diplomatic contact with the advanced civilizations that receive our transmission. Our mission is of reconnaissance as our relatively primitive civilization seeks to acclimate itself to this new environment. "Greeting's VSS LIberty, and welcome to the solar system. This is AdmiralMarcus Raimus, of the Domination of Tanaara. I handle all insystem operations for the Domination. You are always welcome to stop at one of our Habitats and visit. We have long been willing to exchange technology and good converstastion."
The reply went out, giving the coordinates of the primary - and oldest habitat, the 'Tater' as it had been long called. It was a spun out asteroid that was home to only about a hundred thousand but it was a heavily visited tourist destination, and the gateway to the other Tanaaran orbitals.
"Admiral Marcus Raimus, we are pleased to receive your transmission, and our scientists tell us you are located approximately 20,000 LY away, which means that unless you have some means of reception we are not familiar with, our response will take 20,000 years to reach you.
Just the same, we have encountered a civilization that claims to be able to scan entire galaxies, and we would not put such technological capabilities past the civilizations we are encountering.
The Minarchist Republic of Vilikiy thanks you for your generous offer, and it is one we will certainly like to take you up on at our earliest ability and convenience. With primitive rocket-based propulsion our maiden voyage only allows us movement within our own star system - a journey from our third planet to our fifth planet and back is expected to take three months. There are many civilizations much more advanced than our own capable of greater feats, though, and we hope to rapidly advance our technological capabilities.
We would like to inquire as to the political atmosphere of the interstellar community, especially in the region of the Solar System. Ironically, we have had contact with you before those within our own system. Any intel you can provide as to the situation would be greatly appreciated. Over."
"Err. Alien greetings to you." Admiral Litvinov parroted, shocked by the sudden appearance of a non-human controlled ship appearing so closely to the VSS Liberty in apparent response to the hailing they sent out.
Sol was packed with hundreds of thousands of ships and many non human merchants coming from distant points unknown at any one given time, Litvinov knew, but the speed and boldness of the alien ship was startling.
"We are on a recon mission of peace, friendship, and greater understanding with the greater interstellar community." Litvinov continued. "You are the first ship who has contacted us and approached within visual range. Our last communication was sent to a party over twenty light years from here. Our basic technology level is a barrier to many important milestones, from propulsion to communications to weapons, so we welcome all the contact we can manage with new civilizations such as yours. "It appears to be picking up very tiny objects we were unable to detect until now."
"I better hail it. Put me up." Litvinov decided with a nod, putting his aged hand to his mouth in thought.
"Greetings, new vessel. This is the VSS Liberty. We are on a mission of peace and friendship, and understanding with the larger interstellar community. What brings your ship into our home system?"
"The idiots." Said Iosef, shaking his head at the ship log as it fed back to The Orbital Commission. On his monitor, huge monolithic dowels of solid refined steel were sliding gracefully in the null-G from a refinery a hundred times the size of his tiny Cutter-tug. "Even if they're willing to transmit us state-of-the-art schematics they'd be worthless to us. We don't have the tools to make the tools to make the tools to make the parts that make up one of those ships. It's pointless."
"The PDA decontructs a material to its most basic atoms where it is then re-arragned to form the materials requierd to build what you need then it builds it. essentially building what ever you need from something else."(http://homeworld.wikia.com/wiki/PDA) "be warned it cost more a proportiante amount of materials to build someone"
"Unfortunately I have standing orders to continue on with my mission regardless, but I will transport a diplomatic envoy to your vessel and transmit this bright start to our journey back to the Orbital Commission so that they can prepare for the transport of the materials and hammer out the final details of the trade with our administrator. Who I am sure will have a great interest to meet with you." Litvinov replied cordially. "Over."
As the transmission ended, the Admiral sat forward slowly and scrolled through the list of diplomats. Knowing they were aliens, and being a man of the military with a healthy paranoia and xenophobia, the possibility of his envoy being devoured by ravenous aliens after a long journey was in the back of his mind, but he did not judge it as a likely scenario, and the VSS Liberty felt safe enough so close to Earth.
"Lieutenant Lev North." He said, pointing to a man sitting on the lowered deck before him sitting at a console. "You will put together an envoy and guide our friends to the Orbital Commission and help arrange the transfer under Administrator Garen's authority."
"Yes, Admiral." Replied the member of Vilikiy's Diplomatic Corps with a smart salute.
"Put me back through to the Kewen." Litvinov ordered as the lieutenant moved swiftly from the bridge. He waited a second, and continued. "I have sent one of my best men to guide you back to our headquarters, and I thank you most sincerely on behalf of all of Vilikiy for your generosity. Over."
"This is an interesting development." Garen conceded, back at the Orbital Commission HQ. Slowly, he nodded, more and more rapidly. "Yes, this will work very well. We will learn volumes from this device, and though it's small it will advance our industrial capabilies and scientific knowledge by centuries!"
Dr. Ginsburg stared at the practically manic administrator with a bemused expression. One moment he was the most annoying pessimist and the next he was like a child on christmas morning, bubbling with excitement. "You should look into medication. Lieutenant North and his envoy disembarked from a small, submarine-like craft with a large maneuvering apparatus attached to its rear inside the dock of the Kewen ship.
Upon first sight of the aliens, a sense of awe subdued an obvious anxiety at seeing such large arachnid-like creatures which Humans seemed to have an instinctive fear for.
"My greetings to you." Lieutenant North said warmly, looking from one alien to another, at what he thought was their face, although perhaps eye contact wasn't polite among non-Humans. "I am Lieutenant North, diplomatic corps. Very pleased to meet you and your people."
"This is Administrator Iosef Galen of the Orbital Commission." Greeted an audibly giddy voice as the alien ship descended into the criss-crossing lanes of traffic around Earth. "I have organized the shipment of 100 metric tons of raw iron ore to your ship as per the trade you have offered our military vessel. Since our measurement system is likely meaningless to you, you can merely scan the large freighter approaching your vessel and see how much of that mass you will require to halfway fill your tanks. How are you, Lieutenant North?"
As the Kewen ship bridged the short distance between the VSS Liberty and Earth, Lt. North was unaware of the hailing being sent from his people. It was in fact taking his envoy longer to travel to the translator as Lieutenant North kept making conversation about the various sites to see inside the fascinating ship, and trying to get to know his diplomatic counterpart, 45D.
"I hope it's not rude to ask, 45D, but why are you named with a number and a letter? You seem to be an individual with a personality, to me. Then again, I'm sure you're actually called something else in your native language and the combination is merely an aproximation of our own alphanumeric system."
"how are you leutenant north"
1C greeted the new pary on the bridge "greetings" he chirped softly the onboard computer translating into decent english
"wecome to the bridge of the KSS incorruptible"
"Admisistrator you can tell the frieghter to dump the cargo it is enough." "a shuttle is being loaded with the PDA and is enroute to your station" with that signal a failay large transport came out of the hanger and made its way towards the station with in it carrying the PDA.
"Ease it in. No mistakes, or I'll make sure they stick you on the coldest, most remote rock in the Berring Sea." Threatened Kirill Plymouth as his pilot in training urged the cutter-tug forward, into the gaping core of the single-reactor plasma generator in construction. Aligned perfectly, the ship only needed a steady forward thrust, so it wasn't too hard, but its million encred payload of cooling coils being pulled behind the tug was still a pretty risky thing to trust a cadet with. "Steady as she goes, just put her in there."
"Don't worry, Plymouth, I'll have your job soon enough and I'll be the one threatening you with exile." Sophia Bentol replied with a smirk as the shadow of the lip of the unfinished reactor passed over them.
"The only way you'll get my job is if I get promoted out of it," Kirill said, laughing. "Anyway, we're not going to be able to create any more components now that our steel is gone. I hope we got something good in return, because from what I understand, we bet the farm on being able to finish this reactor. Everybody needs plasma."
"I'll bet we got an alien ship. I'll bet I fly it before you do." Sophia said as she increased reverse thrust to slow their approach towards the center of the core.
"Too soon to have an alien ship. Nothing to trade for one. Besides, they'd never let a wildcat like you command a priceless vessel. You'd crash it into the moon."
"Then what do you think it is?"
"Pirates."
"Pirates? We're in orbit over Earth."
"Feel safe just because we're near Earth? People get robbed in cities. It's the same principle. There's all this traffic around this planet. Small time piracy on small time micro powers like Vilikiy would go unnoticed. Somebody with bigger guns could be robbing us of our entire steel supply."
"We've still got nukes." Sophie countered, reversing the thrust even more, and backing the cooling coil into place. A loud THUNK sounded through the ship as their cargo locked into place.
"Nicely done." Said Kirill with an approving nod as he looked at the display showing everything was properly plugged in. "Anyway, I'll bet they've got force fields."
"Forcefields? Now you're just making things up. That's ridiculous."
"You're ridiculous."
"No you."
"No you."
((Lt. North asked your diplomat a question, and you were sent a hail by the Orbital Commission.))
"Sadly, all of our docks are specialized to receive only ships sharing our design, so you're probably unable to dock or land anywhere. However, this leased freighter is capable of transporting its cargo to other ships." Iosef Garen said to the Kewen ship. "We will send engineers to learn how to use your device at your convenience. Just let us know when, over."
"Just fine, Administrator." Lieutenant replied as they entered the bridge. "We were learning about the culture of our Kewen Friends. Their race is quite hospitable and fascinating and though I've only been aboard a few minutes I've learned a great deal and had an enlightening and candid conversation with their own diplomat."
"Glad to hear it, Lieutenant." Said Garen. "Your orders are to travel with the device we are being traded, have your engineers be shown how to use it, and then we will discuss the matter of creating an embassy with the Kewen."
"Yes sir." The Lieutenant responded, offering another salute.
"To the Kewen leadership, I offer you my apologies yet again. Our nation has no starport, but we have no qualms with you landing within Vilikiy if you do not require facilities for landing. How large is the object? Perhaps one of our Cutter-tugs could dock with your ship and it could be loaded into our vessel instead of vice versa. Over."
"the PDA in question is meant for fighter creation and so it is the size of the shuttle we have sent to you a bit smaller, a engineer i being sent with the PDA he has opted to stay with you if you allow it to be our liason with you as sorts,"
45D turned to the human diplomat
"You are a bit late the PDA is already on route you are still welcome to stay here and discuss with us terms of peace/trade some more"
on board the shuttle 1T watched out a window as the shuttle decended into the atmosphere rocking slightly agaisnt the pressure before leveling out and landing near what the kewen though to be the largest city and heance forth the capital city.
1T opened the rear hatch of the shuttle and hoped on board the wind rider a small 6 wheel tug vechile driver out of the read of the transport it towed a large clyindral device on wheels its size was approx 20 meters in length 7.2meters wide 3.2 meters high.
"Go, go, go!" Cried Field Marshal Star Reynolds into her headset, her long brown hair whipping back and fourth as air rushed through the Chinook helicopter with its open side doors towards the site of the landed shuttle. "There's plenty of folks who would like to kill the aliens and steal our prize just to have the satisfaction of watching Vilikiy be destroyed by a coalition as punishment. I want a FULL perimeter set up within FIVE MINUTES on arrival, do you get me? FIVE MINUTES."
As the Chinook rose above the pristine white peaks of Mount Juneau, the landing site was seen, and the huge helicopter began to descend, escorted by three attack helicopters.
"Holy hell, that thing is huge. We're going to need two flatbed semis. Get them here within thirty minutes. Take no excuses. Hijack them if you have to. This is a matter of national security and one of the proudest moments in our nation's history combined. If I hear anyone screwed up I will see to their dishonorable discharge personally!"
Swiftly, the chopper landed a mere twenty meters from the landing site, and disembarked to greet the Kewen. Overhead, the three attack helicopters began running sweeping patrols throughout the area and mechanized infantry from the National Militia swept in and set up defensive positions, securing the area tighter than a fortress within minutes.
---
"My superior spoke of the possibility of creating an embassy within your civilization." Said Lieutenant North. "Would that be something you were interested in? Naturally, only our Exarch can make the final decision to establish one, but it's worth discussing ahead of that time."
"Contact. Three bogies entering Vilikiyan Airspace at a high speed from the Bering Sea. These ain't jets."
"All units, open fire at will."
Suddenly, brilliant yellow arcs of light filled even the daytime sky, spitting streams of high powered gunfire from the APCs. Dark blotches of flak started puffing into existence from the hundreds of assembled technicals, and the three helicopters overhead released a shower of flares before pulling into evasive maneuvers.
Coming in low, the craft resembled giant albatross birds with flexed wings - interplanetary fighters.
"Alaskan forces, stand down. We have tracked an alien craft landing on Earth without clearance." Said a voice, as two missiles from each of the three fighters were loosed.
"Negative. You have unilaterally violated Vilikiyan territory and are threatening our interests. Break off or be destroyed."
The missiles whipped in past the APCs and infantry with blazing guns, and zeroed in on the alien shuttle, slamming into the ground all around it, exploding violently in near misses - distracted by the flares which now dwindled away and fell into the cold snow.
As the enemy fighters rocketed in, they opened up with their pulse cannons, blasting streams of scintillating blue energy across a swath of APCs destroying them and their infantry cohorts in an instant. The Vilikiy forces, however, did not break. In exchange for the lives of their comrades, a chain of shells ripped through the left wing of one of the fighters, causing it to violently fall away from its squad and crash violently into Mount Juneau, its dual gravity core engine exploding in a maelstrom of dark energy, scarring the mountain forever with deep whiplash-like wounds.
Coming back around, the two remaining fighters dropped glowing bombs from under their wings on another hardpoint of mechanized infantry, obliterating them in novas of light and causing the very ground to shake. Their death dealing, however, was not finished. With the same motion as their bomb strike, their pulse cannons opened up once more, destroying squad after squad of Vilikiyan infantry as their shells again raked the airborne enemy in exchange, damaging them both so that huge billowing clouds of thick smoke sprayed from their engines. Attempting to make an escape out to sea where they would be rescued by whatever hostile nation they came from, the desolated Vilikiyan forces had one more card to play.
In a sudden move, the Interplanetary fighters detected incoming aircraft, and turned to face them. It was too late, though. The Ninetails-class interceptor fighters streaked past their targets in an energetic blur, their autocannons ricocheting off their thick purple alloy armor uselessly. Coming back around, in a wide arc towards the sky, this time letting their missiles fly. Again, failure, as the missiles streaked harmlessly past the enemy without being able to lock onto any heat signature.
Attempting to escape, the damaged enemy continued on its way, apparently impervious to the Ninetails fighters.
"The trucks are here. Get this thing loaded up, now!" Shouted Field Marshal Star Reynolds, her face covered in mud and grease, her hands covered in blood. All around her, the smoldering wreckage of dozens of APCs and technicals coughed streams of thick black smoke into the air, obfuscating the entire area. "Don't forget the xeno engineer! And somebody get me that radio!"
"There's one in the Chinook, sir." reported a Major with severe burns on his arm, guiding the field marshal to the large helicopter which somehow survived the strafing.
"This is Field Marshal Reynolds reporting. We have been attacked by three advanced interplanetary fighters. One vessel was destroyed, and two flew over the Bering Sea and are believed to have ditched. Our Ninetails fighters were ineffective, I repeat, ineffective against the enemy and I expect more fighters to be deployed. The Mauser Autocannons on our APCs were effective, repeat, WERE effective against the enemy. Recommending all Ninetails be equipped with MAUSER autocannons immediately and ready to scramble at my mark."
"We copy that, Field Marshal. We will eq--"
Suddenly, the radio transmission turned to a roaring static.
"Radar and radio down! They're jamming them somehow!"
"Expect hostile contact imminently!"
Falling in the wake of the burning battleship, tiny fighters were entering the atmosphere of Earth, phasing in and out like twinkling stars, as their mothership, the GFS Conquerer jammed electro-magnetic communication systems in the arctic regions of the entire planet.
Like eerie cherry blossom petals flashing in the sunlight, the twelve purple fighters fell in a tailspin like lifeless debris from the battleship before lighting up and soaring into an upward arc and lining up into formation.
Slowly, the flatbed semis that had been bound together rolled from the skirmish site and toward the highway that would carry them to the relative safety of a bunker. Above them, the three attack helicopters and the Chinook positioned themselves as an umbrella of sacrificial metal to keep the PDA and the Kewen safe.
Above, splitting into two groups, six of the alien fighters surged away from the other squadron to fire its phase missiles at the Kewen Shuttle.
Meanwhile, missiles were simultaneously launched at the escaping semis and their precious cargo as a shining imitation fighter rolled out of the PDA. A shower of bright magnesium-thermite flares flickered down from the helicopters, again distracting the advanced missiles with the primitive technology of raw heat. The ground shook as the huge missiles sunk themselves into the ground, exploding and shattering the highway like glass, causing the huge semis and the PDA on their flatbeds to jump several feet and fall back down with a huge crash. Despite the turbulence, though, only the fighter fell with an unceremonious CRACK onto the broken pavement.
"Damn it! Major, you're in command!" Star shouted, jumping from the helicopter. For a moment, everything went still as the tug of gravity filled her stomach with dread. At first, she felt nothing upon landing, but a split second later came the hot white pain. She had broken her leg. All the same, though, she hobbled to the darkened new alien fighter and threw herself in, looking for the controls. To her dismay, there were none, but as she looked desperately for the weapon controls, a crosshair lit up on the windshield.
With a thought, the familiar blue pulses of energy dragged themselves across the highway, nearly hitting the semis, but slowly righted themselves, drifting up into the sky - back and fourth, raking the enemy fighters. Immediately, in a confused rage, they broke off the chase of the semis, and circled around to destroy Field Marshal Star Reynolds in her makeshift anti-air turret.
Though the Kewen scoured the airwaves for a trace of communications, and they successfully intercepted a message.
"We have lost this battle. We will have to destroy Vilikiy by more indirect means. Retreat to the mothership before we take further losses. These 'Kewen' will be handled. We will track down their homeworld and obliterate it." said a rasping voice, before the transmission ended, and the fighters began winking out of existence even as the swarm of Kewen fighters and drones began to fill the air with ammo that would certainly destroy them had they stayed a half second later.
Despite their best efforts, though, the transmission seemed to be untraceable even by Kewen's advanced measures. What these strange enemies lacked in strength and numbers, they clearly made up for in stealth and secrecy. But one question loomed largest in the minds of the Vilikiyans.
---
"Why would these fighters be so desperate to destroy this PDF? Clearly they have technology to rival or exceed it." Murmured a dumbfounded Star Reynolds sitting in the open cockpit of a grounded enemy fighter in the middle of a broken highway. Soaring overhead, the Kewen fighters and drones passed a pitiful handful of Ninetails fighters whipping past with their jury-rigged autocannons, too late to the fight. Inadvertently, her out-loud wonderment had turned on the thought-activated comm system, and this was transmitted to half of Vilikiy - the only radio signal received in the past ten minutes.
"these "primitives" as you call them are your brothers, you sisters and your sons and daughters why would you betray your race such?why are you hostile to us? we come with nothing but peace and sincerity yet that warrents a attack for no reason? we could of virus bombed this planet into the stone age but we didnt, yet you attack why is this? is human ignorace and xenophobia still so high?" he continued remebering the lessons taught to the kewen by the discoverers.
back on the surface
1T shook with fear such anger such rage filled within him he came with the best of intentions yet he was met with death? why he thought he did not deserve this. doing what he thought best he sent the scans of the "grey faction" fighter to the KSS incorruptible the compounds in its hull and the metals were sent to the Inncorruptible where the scanners would be updated with this and they would scan the planet for any such metal or power emimnations.
after sending the data 1T hopped off the flat bed and scruuied over to the human in the GF fighter peering into the cockpit he asked "Aliving are you?"
Despite all the swarm's fury and impetus to find a lock on the so-called Gray Faction, their stealth technology seems to be beyond the Kewen's, and every time the automated tracing was close, it turned out to be another false alarm. Though the transmissions were in the most crude of telecommunication forms, radio, it was as though the transmissions were being generated from random, empty points of space. Without being in a closed system and being able to track every wave and particle of energy independently, it would be impossible to track their source. Irrespective of that fact, though, the Gray Faction seems to have gone silent for the time, moving on to the next item on its insidious agenda.
"Y, yes." Star said, hoisting herself with much difficulty from the brand new interplanetary fighter. "Thank you for your concern, xeno. You are our technician? I apologize for this rude welcome to our planet. We don't know who these enemies are or why they wish to attack us, but I want you to know that Earth is a diverse planet with thousands of different nations and I hope you will not hold the actions of a single faction against the people of Earth, or the Minarchist Republic of Vilikiy. Let's get to the safety of the bunker, though. They might come back."
Two Days Later, Orbital Commission HQ
"I estimate we will need to scrap our entire fleet and starfleet doctrines once a year for ten years in order to stay viable as a military force. By then we might have achieved some semblance of military equality." Said Dr. Ginsburg lazily. "For example, Field Marshal, those scans of the interplanetary fighters will allow us to create more powerful bombs, extremely versatile missiles, and a new kind of power plant we're not even familiar with. You saw what it did to Mount Juneau in person. Not to mention that just one of these tiny fighters is faster, with more range, and much more powerful than our entire starfleet of so-called cruisers."
"I appreciate your input, doctor." Field Marshal Star Reynolds said, from the bunker on Earth. "On Exarch Hilscher's command, we have begun the duplication process of the PDAs, and they are being shipped to every major colony in Vilikiy. The Kewen surrogate, whose name is apparently 1T, has been extremely helpful and patient with us. Thanks to him, the PDAs, and our vast iron reserves, we have already created three hundred of the interplanetary fighters. They're thought activated, so very little additional training is required for our pilots. I've dispatched the majority of them to OC-HQ, but three of them will catch up to the VSS Liberty and escort it on its mission."
"Very good, Field Marshal. Thanks for the update."
"Oh, how close are you to finishing the plasma reactor?"
"Ah, well, we have no more iron, so we'll be unable to finish it until congress convenes and gives us additional funding."
"That's unfortunate. The fighters need plasma to operate. I have no idea how long they're able to operate before refueling. Obviously some plasma is created by the PDA, so perhaps our scientists will figure out how to make the PDAs create containers of plasma somehow to keep our fleet fueled until the reactor is completed."
"We'll do what we can up here, and as always, we will keep you updated. Over and out."
ooc: warn me before you skip ahead two days thanks and all below is taking place BEFORE you skipped ahead into thefuture.
"good that is" said 1T as he helped star out from the cockpit
"seeming it the PDA working good for theseing fighters eh?"
1T had taught the humans much about the PDA but he decided to tell some more fun facts
after being moved to the bunker
ooc: im assuming im talking to someone high up
IC:
"PDA guidelines and technical advice"
The PDA is universal device, you think it only runs on iron let me clarify IT RUNS ON EVERYTHING you can throw rubbish in there and it can turn it into a weapon, so we used it as waste diposal, nuclear waste? no problem give it to the PDA and viola more building materials, scrap metals, waste, even dead things call all be used to make new things the PDA in no instance is to be used to clone or recreate organic things bodyparts etc. it has been programed to shut down and be redered usuless for ever if such a thing was to be done. construction time of a new PDA is estimated to be at 2 days with its current size also to put a limit in any rogure factionns a failsafe has been implaneted in all PDA's and cannot be removed a PDA cannot construct more that 15 PDA's from itself also said new PDA's cannot build replicas only items, the largest a fighter PDA can construct is a PDA going to the size of one of your crusiers and thats as big as the fail safe will allow also we beg that you do not try and remove the outcasings to operate on it as it will casue a core meltdown which will disintergrate everything within 15 square miles, the PDA CAN MAKE ANYTHING, type in the specifics and atomic structure and it will creat it be warned tho it will only make the substance and no container so always have one ready.
sighing he contiued
you can use the PDA to make MORE iron reserves and anything thing else
that is the true beuty of the PDA" he finished
on the Inncorruptible
1C sent a reply,
"no we will not hold you all for this attack but when we find the location of any of their bases we warn, we will wipe it off the face if the planet."
"on a more happier note we are glad to meet you and your nation, we think it would be wise to hold a conferance between us and ALL nations on this globe?so we can explain" the Inncorruptible moved back into the atmosphere the fighters returned to the bays and the drones the PDA constructed were de-materialised again and their schematics were wiped
ooc: next time dont go skipping ahead ask first pls? also im not done yet there is still things in the present that needs to be ironed out
Transmission to the Incorruptible from Juneau.
"Commander One," said a male voice after communications had been restored on Earth after several days of electro-magnetic signal jamming. "I am Exarch Hilscher, leader of the Minarchist Republic of Vilikiy. I am glad I could talk to you. Our congress has convened, and they have agreed to establish an embassy with the Kewen people. A large diplomatic mission is awaiting transport to your ship, if you are willing. At such point as you return to your capital world, we would request a small plot of land close to your capital city to be set aside and designated sovereign MRV territory for the purposes of our embassy being created."
"Additionally, while we applaud the spirit of your wanting to communicate with all the nations of Earth, that is simply not possible. The planet is fractured between thousands of sovereign nations, and there is no impetus to meet with alien civilizations every time a new one is created."
"And in one last note, we thought you might be interested to know that your micromanufactories have been dubbed Kitsune Factories after the mother fox spirit of our national animal."
((Actually, I plan to limit the PDAs to require raw materials instead of being a magical device that makes whatever out of whatever like a philosopher's stone. Additionally, it's Earth where presumably all nations on Nationstates exist. It being destroyed or conquered doesn't make any sense.))
((As far as skipping ahead two days, I'm trying to keep the story moving and I can't promise I won't do it again. I will ignore things and skip things sometimes to keep the story moving at a pace I like. I apologize in advance for any of that I do, but I don't want people to get bored.))
"We've got one schematic of an advanced fighter." Dr. Ginsburg said to his fellows, showing the features of the schematic on a screen. "The power plant uses mass-energy to generate electricity for many systems including the high-energy weapons. The thrusters generate tiny subspace bubbles to generate thrust without a rocket engine; which provides us with superior speed and maneuvering. Its blink drive uses the same subspace bubble technology to effectively teleport itself or nearby objects short distances. Its thought-activated technology will provide countless breakthroughs in neuro-science. The advances at our fingertips are limitless. But there's one thing we don't have from these fighters. Namely, that they're interplanetary fighters. We can now travel to Saturn and back in a few days instead of a year, but we still can't travel to other star systems. Using the known systems of the fighter, what sort of plans have you come up with to get us out of the Solar System?"
"I believe I have an idea." Said Senior Fellow Susan Chertoff. "As you said, the propulsion of the fighter is related somehow to the 'blink drive' as it's being called. I have a theory that this 'blink drive' works by generating a massive spherical energy field around its power plant. I noticed a correlation between the maximum phase jump range and the electro-magnetic field around each fighter. A fighter can blink only to another point within this sphere. My idea is to confirm this hypothesis and, if verified, try to create a larger version of the power plant. Even if the experiment is a failure, it will produce enough electricity to run our new plasma reactor. If it does work, however, we will be able to jump vast distances. How vast, and if they're vast enough to bridge the distance between stars, though, is what we'd need to find out."
"All right, then." Dr. Ginsburg said, after a few hours of deliberation. "We will go ahead with the reverse engineering of the energy-mass gravity power plant and its component parts, etc., with the goal of creating a native system on a larger scale at which time we will attempt to send an unmanned probe to the Alpha Centauri system. Daniels, you will lead the research into disassembling a Ninetails Mk. II and identifying the component parts. Chertoff will lead the disassembly of its power plant following its successful removal."
"Turn the plants back on." Ordered Administrator Garen.
"Pardon me, sir?"
"I said turn them on. We are going to sacrifice our infrastructure to complete that plasma reactor."
"Sir... Do you have authorization for that?"
"I am the chief administrator. I have the authority to sink the infrastructure into the atmosphere. We have Kitsune factories and advanced power plants. We're sacrificing the ball bearing facility first, to feed our Kitsune factories, which might be enough to get production of plasma online."
"Y..yes sir."
"There she is. Mars." Litvinov said, as the rust-colored planet loomed into the view. Above the red soil, smog filled the thin atmosphere, and the gray circles of heavy industry and domed cities.
"VSS Liberty, this is Captain Stevens of the Relief Squadron. We've been sent by Vilikiy High Command to escort you on your mission."
"Begin primary ignition sequence."
"Molecule excitement observed. Thermal radiation increasing rapidly. We have a critical pressure."
"That's confirmed plasma production recorded at 3.00137 seconds."
"No, there's something wrong. There should be more pressure than this. A lot more. We peaked at 1% of capacity. There's a problem."
"Problem confirmed. Pressure is dropping exponentially. We have a plasma leak! Go to contingency A! Emergency shut down!"
The young, partially assembled plasma reactor had a glowing orange spot on its right seam, where a tiny stream of plasma had snuck through an imperfect seal and begun melting away the concrete-fiber walls of the reactor. Slowly, though, the tiny tail of blue light died down, leaving only the dull glow of a destroyed containment hull.
"Population on starbased industry has spiked as a result of our massive production boom thanks to the Kitsune factories. We've got a full infrastructure flourishing under a growing private sector of nearly a hundred MILLION Vilikiyans. Ever since we got phase technology, the transport to OC-HQ is a simple matter of getting them into the recruitment centers." Commented a pleased Under-secretary of Central Planning.
"And, though the recent plasma test was a failure, enough plasma was collected to keep the systems running on our Vulpes Class Mk. I Colony Class ships, which will be some of the largest mobile ships ever produced by Vilikiy using mass produced systems from the stolen Ninetails Mk. II fighter-bomber design. However, we will need the problem fixed within two days at our current plasma levels, and the repairs could prove to be expensive or impossible without starting over. Needless to say this is not desireable, as Exarch Hilscher has mandated that the entire population be starborne by the time Vilikiy achieves the billion citizen milestone, projected for the end of this year when the ten-year census takes place."
"Meanwhile, I have to report that our reverse engineering of the Ninetails II power plant is proceeding slowly. We have identified inertial dampers, but the immense energy storage of the power plant causes thermal detonations when we attempt to remotely disassemble them. We tried venting the mass-energy in the core, but not only did flailing tendrils of energy shoot out into space and nearly slice a cutter-tug in half, but the heat was so immense that most of the subsystems inside had completely melted when the venting was finished. We're going to have to figure out a way to use up that energy without damaging any subsystems. We're hoping to examine one of them after its plasma supply has been exhausted, but the tiny supplies of plasma are lasting much longer than we had predicted, even with a test group firing energy pulses off into space 'round the clock. This is a mixed blessing, as it means our fleet will run longer than expected, but it also means we are out of ideas as to how to get at the engine without being burnt alive or melting things we want to see."
"I see." Said Dr. Ginsburg, clipping a tiny portion from his bonsai tree as he listened to their reports. "I'm lead to believe that the plasma shortage is the most serious problem, and we have several options regarding that. My favorite is that the Kitsune factories seem to be capable of producing plasma when given enough mass-energy. I believe they are also far more efficient than our crude Plasma Reactor. Let's divert resources to picking apart every line of code in the Ninetails II schematic and finding the place where it produces the plasma. That should be fairly cheap, despite the complex schematic. With a few hundred skilled people on the job, it might take as little as a week to get us all the plasma we'll need. Get to it."
((Okay, bye. Thanks for stopping in.))
"Dr. Ginsburg. I have wonderful news!" cried Susan Chertoff, bursting in to a meeting aboard the VSS Exodus. "Yesterday, as you know, a fighter finally exhausted its supply of plasma and went dead. Well, we haven't been able to reverse engineer or even identify the purpose of a lot of the parts, but we disassembled the engine, and an idea occurred to me."
"Go on." The Doctor said, looking apologetically at his colleagues who had had their meeting interrupted so suddenly.
"We know that the phase technology works by utilizing the electro-magnetic field around a body of mass-energy. We know that the actual mass in the engine is somehow amplified to exert a larger field. Well, what if we used the sun?"
Susan stood in her labcoat with arms outstretched, staring at her colleagues, waiting for them to recognize her brilliance, but there was only silence.
"Use the sun... How?"
"Oh come on! We use the parts from the engine and some sort of focused beam of energy to amplify the electro-magnetic field of the sun. It would easily allow us to jump to other star systems. I did the math, and we could jump as far as forty light years away. Instantly!"
"That sounds incredibly risky." Said Dr. Ginsburg. "Like you conceded, we don't know how the technology works. What if we inverted the polarity of Sol, or interrupted communications, or whatever? We could make many, many people very angry at us, and there's no way to test your theory without just doing it."
"There is a way. Earth has a pretty large electro-magnetic field."
"Out of the question. Have the parts shipped to the VSS Liberty for a rendezvous at Jupiter and use it. Jupiter might already be large enough to get us to Procyon."
"Too late, I already did." Chertoff said with a knowing smirk. For a moment, Ginsburg didn't understand.
"Are you telling me that whole routine was just for my sake, and you knew that I would make you use Jupiter all along?"
"I never said that. You did." Chertoff responded, leaving the room still wearing her smirk.
Two days later, Ganymede Orbit, Jupiter
"Three, two, ..."
A light went green, and radio silence was observed. A technician flipped the switch, and a powerful beam was fired into the atmosphere of Jupiter from the interplanetary fighter with its jury rigged experimental payload strapped to its wings. As the light streaked in, it exploded, sending a pulse of light warping around its massive, layered surface.
Against orders, the pilot turned his comm back on.
"Sir, the display for my jump range just increased automatically. I think it's programmed for specifically this type of operation. I've got a number of star systems I can jump to, but I have no way of telling which is--"
Suddenly, the transmission - and the fighter - vanished, winking out of existence.
"Did anybody hear what he was trying to say?! What happened?!"
"Negative, sir. Too much static from the interruption."
"Damn it, why did he break radio silence? Did ANYBODY make it out?"
"I did, sir." Reported another fighter. "He said the experiment successfully increased his jump range, but then his transmission cut out. Sir, I fly one of these, too, and even the slightest thought can make it do things you might not really want it to do. He may have jumped to any point within jump range. I'm going after him - I don't think I need any of that equipment. After all, it was all cannibalized from another fighter just like ours. Firing ion beam now."
"Negative, pilot. You will remain on my wing until or--"
The second beam fired from the fighter, connecting Jupiter's colossal mass to the relatively tiny fighter, and in an instant, the second fighter had gone in the same manner as the first.
Weyr
05-05-2008, 01:49
OOC: A bit rusty on the posting side, so apologies for any weirdness.
Just to get such things out of the way: Imperial isa is false data as far as Weyr is concerned. Don't normally complain about post quality, but when posts are virtually illegible, better err on the side of caution in defense of sanity and such other wonderful things.
It was quiet on the bridge, the silence broken only by the quiet whisper of antiquated electronics, and the sigh and groan of ventilation systems more ancient than most nations. The combination had a soporific effect so powerful even Fleet Captain Iria Ito Gai had trouble keeping awake. It was difficult with nothing to do, she reflected, sitting in her high-backed chair, surrounded by a myriad of displays and consoles that allowed her to access any function of the ship, allowed her to look up scan feeds and obtain more information on any object within range, if she so wished it. Past the floating displays the central holotank offered a view of all orbital space around Ganymede, with the countless icons displaying a myriad of orbital platforms and vessels, refineries and shipyards that had sprouted up in the five years since the first Weyrean colonists had set foot on Ganymede and on Callisto.
It had been quiet for almost two months. A raider had dropped off the 'line and been blown to bits by planetary defenses once it entered sub-orbital space. That clip was still floating around on the various nets. Ship-borne marines had been sent down as a matter of course to comb a thousand square miles of territory for potential survivors, aided by Public Security officers from the Jovian Colonial Authority. They found nothing. Little could survive being hit by several dozen pseudo-kinetic shells moving at half the speed of light. Raiders were the only thing she had to worry about in Jupiter, it seemed, she sighed in silence. What was the site of some of the bloodiest battles in known space was now more peaceful than even Mars, where several of the great powers had aligned to ensure the peace against enemies internal or external. This peace was the reason the Self-Defense Forces had decided Mouse Parade alone was a sufficient military presence. Perhaps they were right, and certainly she did not miss the casualties that came from being deployed on a hostile front, yet sometimes she wished something would happen, just to provide some relief from the eternal boredom.
A ping! roused the Captain from her reverie. She blinked for a moment, sat up in her chair, and asked, "HyperScan, what do we have?"
"Tachyon burst in Ganymede orbit, Captain," the reply was almost instant. "Emissions don't match known Ef-Tee-El signatures."
The Captain surveyed the displays floating about her. They had changed automatically for the situation, based on the system's analysis of what she had used in previous such cases. The routine inquiries had already gone out to Traffic Control. The last known bearings of the source of the tachyon burst were up, with all known data appended if she wanted to view it. Most likely someone up there had forgotten to update Mouse Parade's list of authorized outbounds, but she had to verify with Traffic Control just in case.
"Negative on authorization, Captain."
She sighed. It meant someone had decided to not tell Ganymede Traffic Control they were going to use their faster-than-light drive within Weyrean jurisdiction. Such cases were not common. The Weyrean government did not particularly care where someone was heading or why they were heading there, as long as they did not endanger a lot of people in the process, as many faster than light drives tended to do. She checked the images of the vessel in question, compiled from Traffic Control's feed and from Mouse Parade's own scanner sweeps. It looked just like a hundred other parasites capable of flight in vacuum and within an atmosphere, the sort of parasite Weyr had stopped using some hundred odd years ago.
"Data Analysis, run identity check on the parasite." It was a slim chance, unless they could find a match for the vessel's insignia, but it was better than nothing. "Scan, do a sweep for similar vessels."
"Second tachyon burst detected, Captain," two yellow icons were now pulsing in the holotank at the center of the bridge, denoting potential hostiles amidst a sea of blue friendlies and grey neutrals. "Signature is identical."
The Captain snapped, "Alert, yellow one. Helm, prepare for interdiction. How's that data coming along?"
"Got a match on that parasite. Should be up in just a moment... "
Additional data flowed across the screens floating before her. She did not know the nation the insignia on the parasite belonged to; the available data had little more than a handful of ship sightings and some speculation as to combat capabilities. It was the story of countless other underdeveloped states which winked into and out of the multiverse with such frequency. Another display shifted, updated along with the central holotank, showing the location of another possible vessel belonging to a state which called itself Vilikiy.
"Alert, red one. Relay relevant data to Fleet Command. Pulse the Vilikiy and move to interdict."
"Moving to interdict, aye."
Some three hundred thousand kilometers away from Ganymede, a star briefly burst to life, as Mouse Parade engaged its sublight engines for a few brief moments, gently building up velocity as it headed toward the unidentified Vilikiyan vessel, meanwhile broadcasting a request that it heave to and explain why two parasites flying the Vilikiy flag were in gross violation of Weyrean law.
