History

He was merely a name and a number fifteen years later, but the city of Kotovo - now somewhat of a sleepy city on Russia's central regions - had bad implications. To the American Federated Republic's computer databases, he was only X23X - a letter, two numbers, and a letter. Special Forces who had been in a situation, designated by the "X"s. But as a person - if he was still a person - X23X was Barry Richardson, white, male, aged 41. Maybe it was just a name, but to Richardson, X23X meant so much more than just a designation of numbers and letters.

* * * * *

Fifteen Years Earlier

Kotovo, Russian Federation - December 5, 1993
0725, Local Time

Barry Richardson of 1993 was a young man of 26, bred through West Point with flying colors. Trying to blend in to the older Russian city was a bit of a pain - the snow was everywhere and the temperatures were below freezing - but Richardson found it more entertaining than his home town of Butte, Montana - the snow had always been present in his life, whether in the Continental District of the AFR to the parade grounds of the Academy.

Russia was fresh off of the tensions of the 50s to the 80s - having warred directly with the Americans in Korea - and sentiment towards the Westerners wasn't exactly at a high with the proud Russian people who - much like the Americans - had suffered only domestic hiccups in their pursuits of power, mostly economic or through bad leaders. Richardson could already tell that this Michael Dukakis probaly wasn't the best idea for the country (for the record, he'd voted for Bush again. Succeeding a legend like Reagan wasn't easy, especially after all he'd done).

He was supposed to be a Croatian for the purposes of OMI. The Republic's legendary intelligence agency wasn't a legend outside its borders like some of Russia's agencies - for good reason. The Office of Military Intelligence didn't want its name to get out - and quite often was busy spying on its own citizens just as it spied on everybody else. Russia was always the big bad boy that America really didn't like all too much - Dukakis especially hadn't hid that running for the Democratic platform - with only China being a contender for the country that OMI spent most of its time on.

Richardson hated the night, however, and in the encroaching winter it was still hours before daylight. Snow was light and drifts were building, but it was gonna be a bad season up here - the OMI operative could tell that already. No stars were out - apart from the lights of the town of 34,000, the entire place was dark, yet people were already moving out for work. With the death of the "Cold War" that had been hot once still in its throes, the Russians could definitely see the value of capitalism - no more issuing everybody shoes from a dump truck, that was for sure.

One of the clouds in the distance began perking up to Richardson - odd, since the sun shouldn't have been up yet. Far too early for that - unless some other dumb Russian accident was going on. The outskirts of the town were sleepy, but that didn't stop the American operative from heading closer to the uptown part of the city to investigate.

The cloud was getting a little brighter, which was odd - almost as if it was lightening by the second. It was still too earlier for daylight, and...

The cloud abruptly seemed to throw up something that hurtled through the sky - seemingly right at Richardson as he looked up. Several other Russians on the street glanced up now as the thing came in hot, fire shooting through the air as the very atmosphere itself seemed to burn, the object hurtling down and coming in - right at the center square of Kotovo.

Richardson's retinas registered a massive blast of light, followed by a rush of air that swarmed his senses...and blackness overcame everything.

A half hour later, the falling snow woke up Richardson...along with another sound.

Gunshots.

Richardson shook himself awake as he noticed it wasn't snow but ash that was raining down from him - and he soon saw why. The entire city center of Kotovo was ablaze, detrius everywhere around the raging inferno. An Mi-6 transport helo was just coming down, nearing the fire, dropping below a building as it neared the city center - when it up and disappeared. Didn't come out as its trajectory pointed, didn't seem to have been wanting to slow down to land - just disappeared behind the building.

This was too much for Richardson - he was an OMI op. He had to go see what was going on. Soldiers - the Spetznatz, actually - were running in towards the blaze - something had happened. Classified weapon, perhaps? Maybe so. Or a project that the Americans weren't supposed to see - and in the days of satellite technology, it was all about seeing.

As he got closer, the rush of jets above him lit up Richardson's ears - Su-25 Frogfoots blasting in towards the city center and the fire. Bombs began dropping - he could see them visably above the fire - rushing down to add more chaos. Shrapnel and explosions blasted out as each 500lb bomb blasted into the site of the disaster, flames pluming into the sky. Richardson slinked around buildings, stepping over blasted corpses of bodies who had been too close to the initial shockwave - and now couldn't tell the tale.

Three Spetznatz soldiers rushed in towards the blaze - Richardson was close enough now to get visual on what was happening. One of the Spetznatz was levelling his AK-74 into the fire, rattling off automatic rounds into the oven. Something screamed inside the fire - was it a person? Maybe someone who had failed on a mission of utmost secrecy? Richardson had to report this. A second scream, however, generated chills down his spine...that scream...what were they shooting at?

The Frogfoots passed by again as an Mi-24 Hind opened fire with its nose gun at the site, both AGMs and bullets raining in. Richardson looked around, squinting to get a better sight on what was in the middle of the blaze. It looked big, whatever it was - not anything unworldly, but definitely some sort of project the Republic didn't know about. That was definitely worth exploring - even if the Russians had bad things planned.

What wasn't worth it, however, was the Spetznatz soldier nearly running into him as he turned a corner. The Russian's expression blanked momentarily before turning into a snarl, raising his AK-74 and slamming it into the OMI op's temple. The American operative went down, his vision clouding and slipping. As the tunnel of darkness began forming to indicate unconsciousness, he saw the Frogfoots flash by again, firebombs blasting waves of napalm across streets and through the inferno that was whatever had started this...and vision slowly slipped away.

* * * * *

Present Day

Richardson sighed as he stacked another report from his team - Barry was a Delta Force controller, a powerful if secretive man - into his inbox. Richardson had been offered the post somewhat to keep his secrets locked up, somewhat because he had had the foresight to check out the situation fifteen years ago, even if it was not the most informational situation. He liked the job - Richardson was single - and he was able to exert force while not be directly in the firefight. A good situation.

The situation fifteen years ago, however, had recently come up - not because of any other events, merely because OMI was getting bored with toying with other intel agencies and decided to look up Richardson's report of the accident in 1993. As such, the Office was getting paranoid again - what sort of Russian project was in the fire? What had crashed or something that had led the Ruskies to try and cover up yet another failure? Was it something to bring the Americans down to their level, or bring the Russians up to the Americans?

As such, OMI had put a lot of pressure on the pro-military Chancellor, Bill First, in his reelection bid - his Democratic competition far behind. Frist was only too happy to find an excuse to re-amp the military of which Clinton and Dukakis had left in need of upgrade. Richardson was watching the international press conference now as Frist stood at the podium, the Executive Center - essentially the new White House, except that Miami was so much more picturesque as a capital - standing behind him as real backdrop.

"...The ever-changing global situation has convinced me, leaders across the Republic, and America as a whole, that security is the chief concern of freedom as the 21st Century moves on," Frist said, entering the latter parts of a speech that had, for the most part, been motivational fodder.

"While human nature promotes peace and harmony, evil always abounds in a world permeated by greed and tension. Some nations around the world have seen to it to promote violence, to promote fear, to promote darkness. The Republic looks for peace - war has been an action not seen in quite some time in America - yet concerns are concerns. Snowballing, concerns can be much more - from thorns to cancers to tumors to imminent threats. Something must be done, and today I am proud yet sorry to announce that America will not stand idly by to defend itself."

"With this spirit, I announce that the Republic Senate has approved with an astounding majority the Serenity Act - passed to improve all aspects of the military and improve security concerns at home. We need not expand the already large government to make sure every American is safe - merely need to ensure that preventive measures are in place to dissuade those in the world who would look to harm the Republic's interest that this eagle will not simply watch as a shadow is cast upon the free nations of the world."

"But this does not simply need to stop with America. We encourage all free-thinking nations of the world to see the Republic's spirit - and to ensure they are ready for any menace to intrude upon their lands, to see the safety of their people guarenteed for whatever plague may try to poison the spirit of a liberated future. Tomorrow starts today across the world - and we encourage that tomorrow to be fulfilled with peace, not laced with violence. Thank you, and God Bless the Republic."

Frist stepped down from the podium to the usual cheers and applause of the media - the liberal media that would of course tear the speech to ribbons in a mere matter of minutes. But the message would go out around the world, the hidden message that Frist had meant all along - Don't mess with the Republic.

At least, that was how Richardson saw it. And if he was a representative sample, it could be a new dawn upon the Republic's investments of the future.

"Today the Premier of the United Balkan States made a speech to the people of the Balkans." The News anchor on the TV made her report, her speech perfect, not showing any sign of bias. She was a pretty one, blue eyes, brown hair, nice full bosom. She filled out her black pants suit very well. Yes, she was a good anchor, well known across the UBS.

"He again called on the people of the Balkan nations to throw off their shackles of the weak governments ruling them and join the UBS. He then went on to say that the increased beligerrance from both Vienna and Rome should be something all Balkans should be worried about." She gave the report slowly, letting each small detail sink in perfectly. Yes, the Premier would have to call this one to his "Secret Office" one of these days. He chuckled loudly as he turned off the Television and went back to the task at hand.

He had on his desk a message that would be hand-delivered to the Governments of Albania, Montenegro, and Serbia, along with choice radical elements within that country. The Message spoke of a dark future where Vienna and Rome both ruled the Balkans jointly, enslaving the Balkan people. It mentioned the only hope being joining up with the UBS and combating this rise in Imperialism headon. It finished with an invitation to a Meeting in Skjope to discuss many things.

He smiled as he called in Aide to take care of the message. He watched the beautiful redhead walk in, a smile on her face as she took the message to the Cryptology department to coded and sent to the UBS' Embassies. He whistled lightly watching the redheads rear as she walked away. Leaning back in his comfy leather chair he thought "It's good being Premier."

The Quirinal Palace, Rome; April 28, 2008

Salvatore DiSano hated not knowing what was going on. For as long as he could remember - and before that, even, according to his mother - President DiSano always loathed to be in the dark, with things happening without him there to overlook them, if for no other reason than an insatiable curiosity. It bugged him when people wouldn't let him in on their goings-on, even then. But as President of the Mediterranean Alliance, he absolutely abhorred it.

And things were, indeed going on behind his back.

Lucrezia Dellatorre had been appointed to the seat of Minister of Foreign Affairs following the resignation of her predecessor, Gino DaSilva. It had been a joint decision between President DiSano and Grecco Prime Minister Athena Karamanlis. Though she wouldn't admit it, Prime Minister Karamanlis' main motivation behind suggesting Ms. Dellatorre was the fact that Lucrezia was a woman, and Athena dreamed of a day when women would run the government. She's a bit of a feminist, for sure, but she's a brilliant politician, so no one could fault her for it.
Salvatore, on the other hand, liked Lucrezia because she was intelligent; hard-nosed yet fair, determined but cautious, and aggressive while consistently remaining tactful. She had everything necessary for Foreign Affairs, and thusfar she had not let him down.

Until now, that is.

Lucrezia had attended the League of Venice conference (something Salvatore found stunningly pompous for the Austrian Empire; if only for the name) without notifying him or any of his Cabinet members. He even doubted that she had informed her secretary. Yet she attended the League of Venice conference in Vienna, and now it was the hottest topic of discussion on the International Front. From what he had gathered, some whack-job from Vienna was trying to claim superiority to the Asian nations (particularly the ones with nuclear weapons), attempting align the European powers to return to the days of Empires and colonies - namely on Asian soil.
President DiSano had held his breath while waiting for word on what stunt Lucrezia had pulled during the conference. From what was understood, she didn't declare any alliance, and was the first representative to walk out.

Oh, thank god, President DiSano prayed wordlessly. The very idea of the League of Venice - from the world domination, to the European powers, to the instigating Asian nations with nuclear weapons; hell, even the DAMNED NAME - was ludicrous. Surely Lucrezia had seen that immediately and left.

The intercom in his office sounded, "Mr. President, Lucrezia Dellatorre on line 5, sir."

Salvatore all but knocked everything off of his desk in a desperate scavenge for the receiver.

"Ms. Dellatorre!"

"Mr. President. How are you this morning?"

"Not as good as I would be if I had spent the weekend in Vienna."

Lucrezia laughed, "Yes, indeed, sir. The city is gorgeous!"

"I take it the League of Venice" - Salvatore scoffed at the name - "conference didn't go well?"

"Well, not exactly. People weren't very happy. But, the good news is, I have invited them to hold their next meeting in Venice!"

Story One
Today at the Senate building behind me the Imperial senate passed the Clean Industry Act 266 votes to 174. The clean industry act is a comprehensive measure designed to attract high tech industry to the empire by giving incentive tax breaks to industries such as biotechnology, Nanotechnolgy, Computer Technology, Space and Aerospace development and Robotics design industries. If successful within the Empire the bill will end up creating thousands of high paid job for skilled workers and university graduates; and gives a large boost to industrial capacity and the economy. Passed with it was the Electronic Industry act; a second set of tax breaks to attract computer manufacturers and telecommunications Multi-nationals to invest in The Empire and open new factories here particularly those from the Americas and Europe where there is an excess of skilled workforce to job ratio. The Clean Industry act is predicted to double the Gross domestic product in five to eight years.

Story Two
The Tallest building in the world Al-Burj, was destroyed this morning when it mysteriously collapsed; Engineers have long stood on both sides of the argument saying the building is a piece of wonderful middle eastern engineering and a disaster waiting to happen since the building was very top heavy. 800 workers were on sight when the building collapsed on top of them several eyewitnesses claim to have seen an explosion at the base of the tower moments before it collapsed leaving speculation on whether it was a terrorist attack; the Arabian government has promised a full investigation. The thoughts and prayers are with the 800 souls that lost there lives in this tragedy.

Story 3
The Imperil Military today has been put on alert with official government sources stating that this is a planned exorcise which was pencilled in weeks ago and has absolutely nothing to do with the collapse of the Al-Burj earlier today in Southern Arabia’s Dubai district. Military officials say the exorcise will continue for several days before de-mobilising and is simply a test of the Empires ability to mobilise its armed forces quickly should the need arise.

OOC: So you are expecting your country to have 12.5% to 20% growth, consecutively, within the next few years because of some literature your government passed? Sorry, but with an average 'real' GDP growth of around 4.5% tripling or quintupling because of... That... Is more then just a suspension of disbelief... It is a suspension of reality.

Of course, I understand if it was just filler for a nice IC post, yet I cannot help but add this little bit of constructive criticism.

The 4.5~% I came up with by considering the your largest country, Saudi Arabia, has a 5% annual growth, your second smallest (by far, almost 3 1/2 times smaller) country of Israel has a 5.1% but Jordan (slightly less populated then Israel) has a 1.5% growth rate- if not lower.

Spetsnaz Appreciation Day Celebrated Across Russia

Moscow, RF - Celebrations and parades filled the streets of Moscow today as the people celebrated the elites of the elite in the Russian Military, the Spetsnaz. Considered by most Russians to be the best in the world, today is a day set aside by the Federation to allow the citizenry to show their appreciation for Russia's best fighting force. Work was dismissed across the country and the streets run rampant with celebrators taking advantage of the low-price state-supplied vodka. For the crowd's entertainment, Spetsnaz soldiers demonstrated how unnecissarily tough they really are by performing acts that would stunn even the strongest man.

http://www.nato.int/sfor/indexinf/113/s113p06a/b0105166c.jpg

A Spetsnaz commander, Lieutenant General Alexei I. Vladimirovic, was interviewed earlier on the celebrations today. This excerpt was taken from his response to the question 'Is all this training really necessary?'

"Come on now! Is that a serious question? Why shouldn't we train them this way? It would make no sense not to! The Americans may have their laser guided NLOS systems and pinpoint explosives, but every sensible military tactician knows that the only real way to kill a terrorist pig is a double backflip hatchet-toss to the forehead! You would have to be a drunken fool not to think so!"

PARIS, GERMAN DOMINION - Yesterday afternoon, there was an attempted attack on the Eiffel Tower. A SUV driving through the park illegally and breaking the speed limit was stopped by security forces and discovered to have enough explosives to heavily damage the Eiffel tower. The driver was from the Middle East police state, but no other information was given. Security doubled around Paris yesterday, after the car bomb incident.

Police have not said whether this is connected to the recent "bombings" of the Al-Burj.

Mediterranean Army Mobilizes in Friuli

VENETO, Italy
The Mediterranean Armed Forces are on the move, according to local and regional officials in the northern part of the Italian province. The military has set up base on the coastal town of Monfalcone, in the northeastern corner of the province.
Minister of Defense Chief General Carlo Cadeva released a series of statements during a press conference yesterday stating that the mobility was "standard operations for this time of year. The troops will undergo a series of training sessions between Monfalcone and Trieste."
This follows a high-profile meeting in Venice earlier this week with the League of Venice; a controversial European organization founded by Austria. With the harbors of Monfalcone and Trieste so close to the Slovenian border, increasing tensions between the Mediterranean and Slovenia continue to rise. Chief General Cadeva stated that Italy "had no plans to engage in any military aggression towards Slovenia," despite a series of rumors in Italy and abroad.
The military gathering consists of approximately 5,000 Army, Naval, and Air Force personnel, though the exact amount remains classified.

Fears grow after Kohima attack kills 27

In recent years peace has fallen across India seven-sister states. Other areas of India have encountered it, largely believed to be sponsored by Socialist nations and the dangerously quiet nation of Pyekan-Kuogu. However, in the morning rush of a Saturday market in the capital of the state of Nagaland, Northeastern India, named Kohima, two armed men, claiming in a letter recovered from their bodies afterwards, to be fighting "in the name of the end to Indian rule", opened fire killing 27 unarmed citizens. Both where killed in a gun-fight with Indian police forces after the market place had been largely cleared.

The attack has sparked new fears in Indian over terrorism in the states. Peaceful for years after fears of a socialist uprising were squashed, the area now seems to in fear of a further-right leaning terrorism. Previous terrorism has also always been previously used to primarily target the military, however was clearly focused on "just killing anything that was Indian", once policemen at the scene said. He also made no second guess on who was to blame, saying "before we feared the Socialists. Now it is Pyekan-Kuogu. They have been eyeing up our land for years and have also clearly been annoyed by the rumours that Indian has been sponsoring terrorism there. However, I feel our nation would not stoop so low. It is time for our leader, Indra Patel, to act."

OOC: Pyeki, this is all speculation of course, though we had discussed the proxy war thing. Also, if you are open to it, India would like to plough resources into your terrorist organizations to attack primarly military targets (as citizens do not seem to mean all that much to you... ;))

One of the biggest military operations in modern Pyekan history is reported by various sources as being under way this week, with government forces suspected to be engaging rebel forces on Sulawesi.

Initial reports suggest that the operation has been undertaken in response to an incident in Makassar, when two policemen were allegedly killed by a pipe bomb. Yangon, it seems, credits Islamist radicals with the attack, and Pyekan National Army forces have been called in from across the island to conduct a serious operation in the interior.

Witnesses report heavy fighting and the use of light artillery and small COIN aircraft by the PNA, and it seems evident that anti-government forces are in a reasonable degree of armament and organisation, leading to suggestions of foreign sponsorship and advice.

Satellite imaging shows a number of literal hot-spots, which may be forest fires or, as dissidents claim, burning villages put to the torch by Imperial troops for alleged sheltering of militants.

The Imperial government denies that there is a serious threat to its authority, but vows to spare nothing in the pursuit of any person or group linked to terrorism in the Pyekan-Kuogu, be they found at home or abroad.

RSF Report by Field General Mambo Jumanji
for King Gamunda's eyes only

The TCN has continuosly sought refuge inside the borders of Eritrea. Intelligence reports show their encampment to be 15 miles beyond our borders. The Eritrean government has failed to respond to our concerns and seems to be harboring the TCN, although of this we have no proof. RSF insists your majesty must approve an incursion by our forces into Eritrean territory so that we may stamp these rebels out once and for all.

(Pyekan Kyogou, you didn't see this AT ALL)
HEAVILY-CODED MESSAGE TO THE FOLLOWING NATIONS:

Honako*, **
Grand Mongolian Empire
The Kanisovian Federation
The Second Israeli Empire
The Persian Empire
The Federated Straits Settlements*, **
Republic of Indochina*
Oceanic States*
The Republic of the Philippines*

Dear leaders of the above nations,
It has come to my attention that the nation of Pyekan-Kyougou, located in then Burma, the Dutch East Indies, and Siam, has claimed all of the areas within South-East Asia. This conserns me greatly, as not many people know information about this isolated nation.

In recent times, the nation of Pyekan-Kyogu has turned violent, and attacked areas within Honako and the Oceanic States. I believe that we are in very large danger, and that a full alert be placed in case Pyekan-Kyougu decides a plan of attack. The traditional fishing areas of the Oceanic States has been raided by Pyekan's, and 27 men and women died in an alleged Pyekan attack.

Rumours have also been leaking about the forced labor of the Javanese ethnic group, among other unnamed ones. This disgusts me greatly, as I myself am 1/4 Javanese, though that is beside the point. These rumours claim that the dead laborers are left to die within the constructed hull of a large mega-ship the Pyekan's are creating. This one mega-ship may be one of many.

We must defend ourselves once the time comes. We must train our armies and navies and be on guard. We must be prepared - Against Pyekan-Kyougu.

Mustafa Khammas,
President of the Sheikhdom of Southern Arabia

Post-Script:
* - The following nations with this symbol means that you are within the boundaries of the nation of Pyekan-Kyougu. You should be the most aware of this threat.

** - The following nations with this symbol means that you are in very much danger. The nation's danger is explained below:

Honako: You are in much danger because of the rescent attacks by the Pyekans (allegedly). I strongly suggest that your military be on guard, if not higher.

The Federated Straits States: You are in much danger because your nation almost is completely surrounded by the nation of Pyekan-Kyogu. If the worst case scenario truly does happen, you will be on your own. I strongly suggest asking for military help from other nations, and putting your military on stand.

Mediterranean Alliance to Open Naval Base in Kansiov

KARAGANDA, Oskeshki Island
Mediterranean Minister of Defense Chief General Carlo Cadeva announced in a press conference yesterday that the Mediterranean Alliance were expanding its military presence throughout the world.
"There will be a series of military base openings in parts of the world of key Mediterranean interest. This is the first step in establishing peaceful military camaraderie with the international powers," Gen. Cadeva stated to a crowd of roughly 6,000 civilians and diplomatic delegates gathered in Karaganda.
The new military base, officially named the Cadeva Naval Arms Center, is located in the oceanic city of Karaganda, on the Kansiovian island of Oskeshki Island, located between the East and South China Seas, merely miles from the southeast coast of the Grand Mongolian Empire. It comes after the Mediterranean opened its doors to the Kansovian Federation, who opened a naval base on the Italian island of Sicily, The Augusta Kansiovian Naval Base, 3 weeks ago.
The Cadeva Naval Arms Center is expected to house a fleet of roughly 55 units and approximately 500 Naval personnel.

Seperatist Group attacks bank

The Slovakian Liberation Movement (SLM) has in recent months become active once again. The organizatio, classified as a domestic terrorist organization with ties to international groups and organized crime, as reemerged after years. The last significant act of the SLM was the 1995 Jonensberg University Hostage Crisis which resulted in the deaths of all fifteen SLM members as well as three students and one policeman killed.

After that, a large-scale government crackdown forced the SLM to run and hide and in 2003, their leader, Josef Adwal was arrested and convicted for planning the University taking. Since then, there's been no activity until recently.

Last week, the Central Bank in Vedroga was hit by several armed robbers and made away with over one millions dollars. An internet video was released by several masked individuals who stated that the SLM is continuing the fight for Slovak independence. An overwhelming majority of Slovaks are ardently against this group and state that they are: "A blemish to the Slovak people in the Worker's State."

Government Officals believe this bank robbery is an attempt for the groupd to procure funding. There have been no arrests made at this point.

Kansiovians Take to the Streets!

http://tashian.com/carl/archives/inaugural-protests.jpg

Today, over 36,000 people took to the streets in Karaganda, with banners saying, "Hands off my land, Italians!!!". Our public survey shows a staggering 57% disapprove of the Naval Base, with 33% as "Don't care" and 10% approving. In Kansiov City, protesters too were rampant, they protested outside parliament building, telling the Government to rethink about the Naval base. On the daily Grensko Political show, Grensko joked, "Its amazing that the Italians want a Naval Base in Kansiov, do they seriously have a military? Even if they have one, they would run before the bombs start falling." with the crowd laughing. Currently, none of the Cabinet members made a statement about the issue thus far.

Italy Addresses Plans to Unite With Vatican City
http://www.gulker.com/blog/wp-content/2007/04/pope_easter.jpg

ROME, Italy
Vatican City lies just two miles outside Rome Square, just beyond the center of Italy's capital. Surrounded by thick, 40-foot high walls and heavily guarded, a man checks passports and IDs from people wishing to enter what may be, at 61 square miles, the world's smallest country. If Italian delegates achieve what they aim for on Friday morning, that may all come to an end.
It has been no secret over the last 50 years of the Italian government's desire to unify Vatican City within Italy. Italy has made offers to the Pope on numerous occasions to integrate the Vatican under the Italian government, even offering to relocate Italy's capital to Vatican City.
The Vatican, which has no military nor governing body outside of the Papacy, have thusfar not issued a statement as to whether they plan to integrate. The responses from the last 5 Popes have been lukewarm, and the issue was ultimately dropped in all instances, overshadowed by more pressing Italian affairs. Now, the Italians hope to have more success with the newly-crowned Pope Benedict XVI.
Friday morning, Italian President Salvatore DiSano will meet with the Pope, along with Swiss Minister of State Samuel Schmid and Greek Prime Minister Athena Karamanlis to breach the topic once again.

Greek Prime Minister Outraged at Turkish Use of Animals in War
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/335/499583ligerao8.jpg

ATHENS, Greece
Greek Prime Minister Athena Karamanlis has formally slighted the Turkish government in a press conference held in Sparta yesterday afternoon.
The above picture appeared in an article of a Mussleburghian newspaper yesterday morning. The article described the animal as a "[a cross between] Lions with Tigers [...] creating a massive killer, machine gun wielding, steroid pumped monster." Prime Minister Karamanlis issued formal sanctions against the Mussleburgh government, demanding that it destroy the creatures, or risk the cut-off of trade relations with the entire Mediterranean, Karamanlis declared in a press conference to over 2000 international military officials, delegates, and human and animal rights activists.
"This is a clear affront to animal rights and takes the term "animal cruelty" to an entirely new level. It is also a direct threat to the surrounding nations."
Karamanlis plans to tour the region starting this week, to meet with security councils in Eastern Europe to discuss what course of action should be taken internationally. Mussleburghian officials could not be reached for comment.

North Korea Attempts Attack on Kansiovian; Italy to Aid Siege

KANSIOV CITY, Kansiov
In a shocking and unexpected turn of events, a North Korean terrorist group, whose affiliation with the North Korean government are under investigation, planted a bomb inside a Putrograd mall. The bomb attempt was intercepted by Kansiovian Intelligence, but later revealed the bomb to be of medium-scale destruction, aimed at destroying the entire mall and surrounding buildings. The Kansiovian Federation has declared a state of total war with North Korean pending investigation of terrorist regimes within N. Korean infrastructure.
Mediterranean Minister of Defense Carlo Cadeva has issued a sanction on North Korea, and stated in a letter addressed to the Kansiovian government that the Cadeva Naval Arms Center, located in the Kansiovian-controlled city of Karaganda would see its first action since its establishment merely one week ago; that action will be to aid the Kansiovian Armed Forces in the siege on North Korea. Imperial Ambassador to Pyongyang Pledges, "utmost support"

Following the recent return to Asia of offensive European forces, this time from the Mediterranean Alliance, the rapid onset of a vast conspiracy's sinister manifestation reveals the complicity of the running dog Kansiov administration in western neo-colonialism.

The Emperor's ambassador to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has delivered His Imperial Majesty's pledge of support against this cabal of worms that threatens to complete the subjugation of the Korean peninsula just as it would surely seek to achieve in South East Asia once it has its way in the north.

Yangon has also declared that it will not accept a new age of imperialism, and will bring down the weight of heaven upon the heads of those who seek to wage war on the weak and the righteous.

Editorial notes-
The Pyekan-Kuogu stands as the DPRK's chief export partner, purchasing several hundred million dollars of military hardware from the Juche state since 2000, while supplying numerous raw materials to that isolated nation. Pyeki's best ballistic missiles are based upon North Korean technology, and some measure of WMD development co-operation between Yangon and Pyongyang is generally accepted to be a fact.

Talks With Kulikovia Successful; Kulikovia to Join League of Venice

ROME, Italy
Minister of Foreign Affairs Lucrezia Dellatorre returned from Kulikovia yeterday after a series of talks with Kulikovian President Nevsky regarding their opposition to the League of Venice.
The conference, held in Poland and spanning three days, were to focus on the intentions of the League of Venice and the role that Kulikovia would play in such an alliance. Delegate to Kulikovia Sir Karlovy had expressed "deep concerns" during the official League conference held in Venice earlier this week. After a series of heated debates, the Minister of Foreign Affairs traveled to Poland to meet with their president directly. She returned today to announce that talks with Poland were, indeed, successful, and that Kulikovia had announced its intention to join the League of Venice.
The League of Venice is a European defense coalition spear-headed by Austrian politicians. The League suffered immense criticism over alleged imperialism from notable Asian nations, and has made waves on an international front since the formation nearly three months ago. Thusfar, all talks of Imperialism have been shot down by representatives of the League, including Lucrezia Dellatorre. So far, the League consists of the Mediterranean, Austria-Moorington, Kulikovia, and Germany; making up the entirety of Central Europe.

The Worker's Report

Kulikovia Divided on League of Venice

President Nevsky met with a joint session of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies today. The President outlined his intentions for Kulikovia to enter the League of Venice. He met mixed opinions from Assemblymen, many of whom were skeptical in the wake of reports of several Austrian delegates stating the League would reclaim Europe's dominance in the world and paranoia over rising Asian powers. The President met with the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs who reassured him that those were the statements of a very small group, though boisterous, had little authority or support. During this meeting with the General Assembly, President Nevsky calmed fears of many officals as well as the people that the League was not an Imperialistic alliance but a European alliance aimed at economic cooperation and good-will, as well as a military alliance.

A survey taken by the Worker's Report say that 40% of the population is against the alliance in the wake of the President's speech which was televised. 60% favor partnership in the alliance but many remain weary of its' actuaql intentions and only time will tell. The majority of Slovak's taking the survey were vehemently opposed to Kulikovian aas well as Slovakian support of the alliance.

Many experts and officals are worried that the Slovakian Congressional Party, which was the loudest in opposition, will pull out of the General Assembly in boycott, all this in the wake of a reassurgance of the SLM. We will keep you informed, good evening, comrades.

Pyekan "Survivors" Targeted as Indian Population Grow Angry at Invasion

The Nicobar and Andaman islands have never meant much to the Indian people, until yesterday. That was when Pyekan forces invaded much of the islands, especially the Nicobar set, and now lay siege to the more populated towns and cities of the Andamans. Hundreds of thousands of Indian lives are at risk. And, in a wave of dangerous patriotism, riots and destruction of the few Pyekan "survivors" (labelled so for escaping the tyrannical regime) have been targeted. Three deaths so far have been noted, and some thirty businesses and homes destroyed, though violence could escalate when the Indian fleet reaches the islands in the next few days.

Amnesty International has said "in times of war civilan immunity must be noted by both sides" and has cited alleged corruption in the Indian Police Forces, who are said to have overlooked the destruction of property and let one man go without charge who freely admitted to aiding in the death of a Pyekan. Meanwhile, Indra Patel has not commented on the issue, but when answering questions today said "India would end this invasion with force if the Pyekan do not leave" and again called for international condemnations of the attacks.

Assistant Deputy Minister of State Shot!

Assistant Deputy Minister of State, Andel Karlovy was shot earlier this evening on the balcony of his home in the Old District, Jonensberg. The outspoken, yet firery Karlovy exchanged heated words with the Chanbcellor of Austria as well as members of the Italian Delegation. Despite this, Kulikovia has entered the League anyways.

He was rushed to Jonensberg Central Hospital where he remains in critical condition. A doctor working at the hospital told reporters that he was shot in the lung and may have severed an artery. He was rushed into surgery just an hour ago and no word yet on his condition. Police and MDS are combing the area but so far, no arrests have bveen made but all efforts are being made to apprehend those responsible. The President is expected to visit the hospital and deliver a speech regarding this event.

Good evening, Xaristan. I'm Bron Turgundy. And you are watching FUN-TV.

Our lead story tonight comes out of Cairo, Damascus, and Tripoli. Three separate, large-scale terrorist incidents have taken place, one in each city. Casualty counts are sketchy at this time, but as many as one thousand Xaristians may have died in the attacks. We have full, comprehensive coverage on the incidents tonight, starting with Trit Bramland in Cairo. Trit?

http://www.edrperformance.com/images/brick.jpg

Thanks Bron. I'm standing here on I-1, the main artery for traffic in Cairo. Approximately two hours ago, four massive truck bombs exploded on the bridge overpass in the center of the city. The bridge collapsed on top of the overpasses below it, causing two others to collapse as well. We have not been able to get a truly accurate report on fatalities or injuries, but the bombs went off at the height of rush hour. Preliminary counts from local hospitals have indicated at least four hundred injured, and a confirmed seventy-five dead. Of course, this number will only continue to rise as more people are rescued and recovered from the rubble here. Some may never be recovered as the bombs exploded in close proximity from what I'm told by eyewitnesses, vaporising the cars closest to them. Bron, back to you.

http://www.big13.net/Achorman%20photos/Burgandy.jpeg

Thank you for that report, Bron. Now we head out to Coronica Verningstone in Tripoli with the report on the attack there. Coronica?

http://www.big13.net/Achorman%20photos/Veronica.jpeg

Thanks, Bron. Triploi's hospital district was rocked this afternoon by three strong blasts out in front of Tripoli General Hospital and Tripoli University Hospital. The reception areas were engulfed in flames and there were many ambulances destroyed when we arrived here today. Fortunately, the car bombs were not strong enough to damage the ER rooms or the ICU units. The only hospital in the area that had just finished constructing it's blast wall for just this type of event, the Hospital of His Most Holy Noodle, is understandably flooded with patients from the blasts. All three hospitals are running on overdrive at the moment. Injuries here are currently just over 100, and fatalities are around 35. More on this story as it develops. Bron?

http://www.big13.net/Achorman%20photos/Burgandy.jpeg

Thank you Coronica. And now, out to Damascus with our man, Frian Bantana. Frian?

http://highedge.vo.llnwd.net/d1/3_prod/d1/Picture/03/73/36_42595347.jpg

Thank you Bron. Gunmen stormed the Regional Government Office in Damascus today, firing Ak-47s while overtaking the guards. A hostage situation has developed, but it is believed that more than half of those who were inside at the time are dead. Negotiators have contacted those inside, and have asked for demands. The attackers have given none at this time, however they have mentioned that they are a part of the MEMFF, the Middle East-Mediterranean Freedom Front. As you know, the MEMFF has long operated out of Lebanon and Cyprus, though they have never been this bold before. As soon as we have exact casualty figures we will pass...

*Gunfire erupts. Bantana can be seen ducking behind the news van as his cameraman continues to film. Suddenly the camera jerks and points to the sky as the cameraman can be heard screaming. Bantana's face fills the camera as he calls for a medic. The screen cuts to black for a moment before cutting back to Turgundy.*

Obviously, we will continue to update you on all three situations as they develop. Stay with FUN-TV, your only name in news for Xaristan.

Mediterranean Alliance Shocked by Karlovy Assassination

ROME, Italy
After the shocking news of the assassination of Andel Karlovy, the Deputy Minister of State for the Worker's State of Kulikovia, Italian officials reacted immediately.
"Everyone in the Mediterranean, as well as the League of Venice, is saddened and appalled by the assassination of Andel Karlovy." President Salvatore DiSano stated in a press conference directly following the news from the Kulikovian government. "This marks a very trying time for the people of Kulikovia, and we'd like them to know that they have our full support."
Andel Karlovy, who had represented Kulikovia in Venice during the initial League of Venice Conference, had shared heated words with Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lucrezia Dellatorre. Karlovy was remarkably against Kulikovia's entrance into the League.
"We shared heated words, yes. He was a really great representative," Ms. Dellatorre stated in an interview with Giornale News. Rumors of an Italian coup attempt on the nation were quickly dissented by both governments.

The RNC stated that the operation was to observe the Pyekkan incursion there, though there have been rumors of a possible intervention.

The Indian message sent to Russia was one of a mixture of warmth and severity, for they did not know of the intentions of this nation. They reminded them to stay in international waters unless permitted and welcomed their assistance if it was friendly, though would like the Russian fleet to either commit itself to friendly assistance or observational status.

Kingdom of Romania to join the League of Venice

VENICE, It.
Upon return from the Italian City, Prince Traian of the Royal Family has announced the Romanian Kingdom's admittance into the League of Venice. As neighbor to the Austrian Empire and the Mediterranean Alliance, the Royal Family hopes this will increase developing relations with other European nations.
The League of Venice is a slightly controversial organization that consists of all major powers in Europe, with the exception of the United Kingdom, Belgium, Spain, and Portugal. Controversy arose during its inception because of imperialistic implications, and received further harsh criticism after the German invasion of Luxembourg and a rumored Austrian invasion of Slovenia.
With regards to any imperialistic connotations, Prince Traian stated that the Kingdom had no intentions of expansion, but will benefit from the protection that the League offers from growing unrest in Serbia.

OOC: Boss Up, Bungussi! (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=556339) For anyone interested in African affairs, the long-standing bush-war between the white elite and black insurgents in Bungussi, the Republic's hinterland. No foreign interest, yet, but I gather that Austria at least might want to get its dirty fingers in this particular pie.

Official Press Release from the Mediterranean President

The Esercito Italiano and Marina Militare aided our neighbors in Xaristan in an invasion of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus after severe terrorist attacks by Cypriot radical groups endorsed by the Cypriot government were carried out in Cairo. This mission was one of promise of future stabilization in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Cypriot government surrendered without defense and the Italian Armed Forces saw no bloodshed. We are happy to report zero casualties on the Mediterranean Front, while very limited casualties on the Xaristani front. Military leaders of the Mediterranean and Xaristan are meeting in Nicoisa within 24 hours to discuss stabilization of the island, and following that, the Mediterranean Arms will be recalled back home. The Mediterranean has no plans to engage further at this time.
