THE FEDERATED STRAITS SETTLEMENTS
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd172/Hoodtan/my_strs.gif
Overview: The Federated Straits Settlements are a federation of three states in Southeast Asia; the Federated Malay States, the Independent Malay States, Singapore, the Sultanate of Brunei, the North Borneo Company and the White Raj of Sarawak. Each state sends representatives to the Parliament in Singapore - some are elected, as in the case of the Federated and Independent States, some are not. Boasting a highly developed economy, the country is led by a white minority Government with a highly determined military, its single objective to protect the country from Pyekian aggression.
History: After the second world war, rather than directly declare independence, the plantation owners of Malaya and the industrialists of Singapore banded together and proposed to the British Government that they instead run the country, and turn the joint federation - lated to be called the FSS with the plural of Straitian, into a bastion of capitalism in the Southern Hemisphere. With India, China and the Indonesian islands falling to Socialism or else tyranny, the deal was accepted and the Federated Settlements were born.
With a laissez-faire approach to economics they quickly dominated their sluggish neighbours in the field of economics and with a small population of twenty million boasts an impressive GDP which is spent on an equally impressive self-defence force, using a mix of British and American technology to its full effect. In recent times the self defence force has designed its own weaponry and manned by competent and proffessional personnel, stands ready to defend the Straits Settlements from foreign aggression.
Economy: The Straits Settlements runs almost a strictly laissez-faire economy, with one of the free-est markets in the world which has spurred consistent GDP growth. Of course, there is a high level of wealth inequality, but compared to their neighbours in the south and north, the prosperous people of the Straits Settlements are somewhat happy with a lack of political suffrage for the indigenous majority and the inequal economic situation. However, capitalistic economies have made The Straits Settlements an international tax haven and the cities of Singapore, Kuching and Kuala Lumpur are some of the most developed in the region, easily matching Hong Kong and maybe even Tokyo and Canberra.
An OPEC member, the Settlements benefits from its massive production of both palm and crude oil. Other materials include Tin and Rubber which are profitable exports, and of course a developed service economy. The FSS has never relinquished its claims over the Spratly Islands and calls to enforce them have been popping up more often in recent years.
Military: A well trained and equipped airforce is the premier branch of the Straitian Military. In the west, Tengah Air Base houses the FSAF's fleet of TSR.2 Bombers, acquired in conjunction Confederated Territories of Latin America. Changi Air Base and Paya Lebar Air Base house the AWACs, interceptors and heavy fighters of the FSAF which stand ready at a moments notice to defend the country from its massive and rather threatening neighbour. Up the Malayan Peninsular, Alor Setar, Bukit Ibam, Bukit Jugra, Butterworth, Gong Kedak, Terengganu, Ipoh and Kuantan also house the aerial fleets of the FSAF. With six large airfields in the East, at Kuching, Miri, Brunei, Labuan, Jesselton and Tawau the Blackburn Buccaneers and EE Canberras are ready to deploy their chemical weapons developed in a joint pgoram with the CTLA.
The land army is a reservist army in which every man has to serve for two years and remains on the call up roster until age 49. A lack of artillery and transport plagues the Army, which consists of a number of brigades, regiments and divisions that are scattered around the country. A large DMZ lies to the north of the Malayan Peninsula with a comprehensive bunker, artillery and surface to air missile network. The Borneo Border is almost totally undefended with sporadic forts where helicopters can land and resupply artillery strongpoints.
