History of the State
Following the Spanish Civil War's conclusion and Franco's rapid ascent to power, Spain was still reeling in economic misery. The civil war had torn apart the Spanish economy from top to bottom, and had threatened the security of Franco's regime. Due to the economic status, however, Spain was forced to stay out of World War II. This did not suit all their neighbors, however. As Spain continued to hold on to it's colonial kingdom in Western Sahara and Morocco, France continually pressured them to relinquish their colonies to a democratically elected government, as they had. The continued belligerence of the French government prompted Franco to deploy extra troops to Morocco, and this eventually lead to the Moroccan War of Subjection.
After the close of World War II, Spain was finally starting to get back on her feet. During the 1966 World Cup, Spain played Portugal in the semifinals. In the course of the game, a riot broke out. Instigated by the fans from Portugal, it lead to the death of around 100 Spaniards. Seizing the opportunity, Franco put his military and economy to the test by cutting all ties with Portugal, and declaring war by the end of the week. Some historians claim that the invasion of Portugal was a test case for a similar invasion of Germany, with whom relations had become strained, but no evidence linking the two has been found. Although the war with Portugal was ultimately a success, it came at a high price. Due to the soldier demanding fronts of Portugal, Franco was forced to constantly reallocate soldiers from his colonial possessions. As such, when Spanish Guinea demanded their independence, Franco could not afford to commit more troops to them, and was forced to grant their request.
Following the war with Portugal, Franco once more deployed forces to Morocco. After diplomatic discussions that lasted for what seemed to be a lifetime, Franco quickly and brutally subjected the rest of Morocco. Work camps were commonplace, and some are still in use to this date.
Following Franco's death and Blanco's assassination, the young Eduardo took power. An energetic leader, his brash style often clashed with the leaders of Germany. To this day, he holds military parades throughout Madrid on a regular basis. He has also seen the commissioning of Spain's only full size carrier, on the same scale as a Nimitz class, as well as the construction of two smaller escort carriers. He remains the leader of Spain, and although he has aged, he has not slowed down one bit.
