Official Communique From the Empire of ka-Spel

To: Maximilian Egbert
CC: Axel Brougeheimer
From: Princess Coldheart
RE: Assistance

The Empire of ka-Spel is happy to be of service to resolve this conflict. My mother, Queen Belladonna, has put me in charge of our role in this conflict. As such, I hereby extend the offer to both leaders to attend a meeting in our Empirical capital, Traumstadt, to conduct peace talks between your people. We have enormous respect for both sides of this conflict, and therefore will not be sending any military reinforcements, but rather offer to mediate peace talks. I urge both sides to put aside violence and consider our offer. It may be the last chance you get to end this peacefully.

Best wishes and regards,
Princess Coldheart

The Princess sat in the head chair at the Traumstadt Hotel conference room, reading a copy of the fax sent to both the Dictator of Der Volkenland and the president-elect of the rogue army. In hindsight, she sounded much more compassionate than she'd intended; a far cry from the detached, indifferent, royal image that she'd wanted to project. C'est la vie, she thought to herself, At least they both agreed to peace talks.

And indeed, the offer was made by Coldheart after the violence had been initiated, and even after it had progressed beyond the point of isolated guerrilla attacks and escalated to the point of organized militias and far-range explosives. In other words, the offer was extended in the epicentre of outright war. Even Coldheart doubted the effectiveness of her own diplomatic skill in this situation.

Coldheart sipped her coffee, waiting for the two leaders and the single ally they were permitted to bring, to arrive. 8:31am, and it was already shaping up to be a long day.

Maximilian Egbert looked at the atomic clock in his personal fighter jet and sighed. He was already a few hours late to the meeting; some of the rebels had decided not to listen to Brougeheimer and not to stop the fighting for the duration of thie meeting. They had sabotaged the fuel reserves in Volksgrad Airport, where he was planning to depart from. He had had to take an autobahn to Pons Du Galle, where the only other functioning military airport was. While Axel Brougeheimer had to take the bus to ka-Spel, He, being the Chairman, could travel in luxury. Still, it pleased him to know that Brougeheimer's train was just as late as he was. After waiting what seemed forever, he landed down in the main airport of Traumstadt about half an hour before Brougeheimer's train was due to arrive. He looked around. At first glance, the city looked very modern and advanced. Of course, there was some litter on the ground, and a small amount of graffiti, but there always was in crowded cities such as this one. He smoothed out his formal atire, decorated with badges and chevrons as befitting the high commander of the military of a great nation. His loyal bodyguards escorted him to the secret location where the meeting was to take place. He was now to wait until Brougeheimer arrived.

Alex Brougeheimer, President Elect of the Republic of Der Volkenland, looked at the mirror on the wall of his train compartment and adjusted his suit. These were the same clothes that he had wore for the three days, leading the Republic in its armed struggle against the Dictatorship. Some of his soldiers had accidentaly-on-purpose sabotaged the airport where Egbert's plane was taking off. For the whole day today, there would be no fighting until the situation was resolved in Tromstadt, in a meeting with Princess Coldheart and Egbert. They had eventually agreed to bring no allies, because this was a very unique situation. Not so unique, really, as much as hard to resolve. But they would try, if only to give enough time to bury the bodies. When the train arrived, he left with his three bodyguards and marched down to the designated meeting place.

Princess Coldheart sat on the bench in the courtyard situated on the roof of the grand Traumstadt Hotel smoking her ritual pre-meeting cigarette. Contrary to popular belief, the Princess was not a natural in diplomatic relations. To be frank, meetings such as this one made her incredibly nervous, and often she had to exert an obscene amount of energy just to retain her composure. But she did it with grace, apparently, as the media ate her up as the best foreign relations diplomat they'd ever seen.

Not that it mattered to Coldheart. She had her goals and her beliefs, and if assuming role of foreign relations extraordinaire was a means to an end, then that was fine with her.

"Madame Princess, your guests have arrived." The young bellboy had apparently come out of thin air, startling Coldheart. Now her nerves were back on edge and she wouldn't have time for another cigarette. Damn.

On her way back to the Conference room, she stopped to peek out the large picture window that overlooked Traumstadt Blvd. She noticed one sleek, black limousine parked outside the Hotel with the banner of the Der Volkenland flag on the antenna. Probably the dictator's. Coldheart thought to herself. But surely the two rivaling leaders did not arrive together. Where was the other car? From the looks of it, the rebel president-elect had either walked, took a cab, or not shown at all. Either way, it was not looking good.

__________

"Good morning, Mr. Brougeheimer; Mr. Egbert. Welcome to Traumstadt." Coldheart declared in a voice so friendly, it was almost sing-song. "I hope everything has been accommodating. If there is anything I can do to make your trip to Traumstadt a more pleasant one, please do not hesitate.
Coldheart smiled gracefully at the two men, "I am Princess of these lands. My word is law."
The subliminal assertion of authority in Traumstadt by Coldheart was not lost on either men. They had been in politics long enough to note the subtle warning to behave themselves; the last thing Coldheart needed was the two men to attack each other in her Conference Room.

"Now, we are here to discuss peace talks. The first thing I would like to note is that you both have chosen to refrain from bringing an ally. This, I feel, is a great sign. It seems to indicate that you both want peace in your nation. The trick now is how to achieve it. I'm fairly positive that we will be able to do so today."

Egbert spoke up first. 'This will hopefully be achieved soon, at the very least. We wouldn't even need this conference if little Axel over here hadn't decided to whip himself up a little rebellion.' Already the conference was off to a bad start.

Axel, hatred and rage on his face, replied, 'You are an evil, evil little man! You pretend everything is happy and good, and if anyone doesn't beleive you you have him shot! You're despicable!'

The two men, though they had received and understood the Princess Coldheart's words, were too full of hatred for each other to care much.

Coldheart had to suppress the urge to referee an argument between the two leaders. It wasn't in her contract to have to pry apart feuding military officers, even if this was a Civil War.

"Mr. Egbert; Mr. Brougeheimer, I ask that you two refrain from outbursts during this conference. Let's try to act like refined politicians.. or adults, whichever way you prefer to look at it.

"The concept of peace between two parties whom oppose each other relies on a benchmark of compromise. To achieve that, let's spell out what exactly the two of you want from each other."
