Speech by the Senate Majority Leader, Antalia Reynes
Ladies and gentlemen of the Senate!
People of Allanea!
Fellow Havenites!
There is a term in foreign relations – something known as the Havenic Madness. The tendency of Havenic nations to go to war with each other over silly reasons. The NATO-Questarian War. The Shen-Zhou Conflict. Interventions. Invasions. Ethnic cleansing. Civil wars. Haven truly is a new face of the Eldar God of War, Khaine. From the Strobovian Straits to the Fyre Sea, again and again, armies clash, steel meets steel, fire meets fire.
It is here in Haven that Allanea has been founded. And though the new capital of Allanea is no longer in Haven, it is Port-Allanea and the North-East of the region that is the homeland of the Allanean people. For good or bad, Allaneans are Havenites first.
Some may insult us for it – call us 'barbarians', perhaps, or modern-day orcs. But we are what we are, natives of one of the greatest areas of Earth, inhabited by some of its greatest civilizations – and among those greatest civilizations, no doubt Allanea deserves an honorable place.
But this does not mean that we must succumb completely to the Havenic Madness, to allow ourselves to be drawn into the meaningless struggles that the continued opposition of NATO and APOC. Sure, APOC has Doomingsland – but Questers has abolished slavery, and generally there has been improvement in many APOC societies in the area of human rights. There is no struggle of good and evil here.
For what purpose is this standoff? So Dreadfire could declare himself Master of the Universe? So King Alexander could wave his scepter over a mountain of dead? What is this? Europe on the eve of the Great War? Is this Soviet Russia under Brezhnev?
In the last war, over half a million Allaneans died – not counting civilian casualties, which amount to another quarter of a million. They died because Questers wanted to declare war on Automagfreek, and they decided that the war would be waged by invading Allanea on multiple fronts.
Not a single Freek has ever deployed to help Allanea.
Not a single Ardan had arrived to our help, and in fact the rulers of th Five Kingdoms had the temerity to come to Allanea, to berate Fieldmarshal Kazansky himself for using too harsh a hand against the enemy! The world media criticized us for defending our very borders, the very sacred homeland of the Allanean people! This is what we got for our trouble!
Ladies and gentlemen, I am happy to say that today this ends. I am happy to propose SB 406, the Allanean Independence Act 2008.
It will allow for Allanea's honorable retirement from NATO, and further call upon President-for-Life Alexander Kazansky to return Allanea to her roots – those which my party, for one, had never departed from: Liberty, Free Markets, and Peace.
In particular, it will call for renewed trade relations with Questers, Cotland, and all other Havenic nations, with the exception only of the Doomani.
Today, my fellow Senators, I ask you to vote for peace.
Vote for free trade.
Vote for liberty.
Vote for Allanea.

And so it went, and the Senate voted for the Act, 153-120, with the rest absent or abstaining. In matters of foreign policy, the consultation of Congress was unneeded. The Act passed. Kazansky contemplated the issue for a week, and then signed the Act. Allanea had quit NATO, and sent out messages of peace and trade to all NATO and Haven nations.
Kazansky himself, having signed the Act with a heavy heart, sent a handwritten apology to Damien Dreadfire, and went on an undetermined-length vacation on one of his secluded properties. A Vice-President, approved by Congress, was left to manage the country's defenses in the absence of the President-for-Life.
