Lapse

An ambulance speeds through uptown Citrana, swerving in and out of peak hour traffic in a manner that would be impossible if traffic today was as bad as usual. A motorist in a Grey BMW ignores the siren approaching, his lack of consideracy costing valuable time in the ambulance's mercy trip. perhaps it is this single person that is to account for the trouble that ensued after that day, for if he had the decency to move, then Lord Gerard would still be alive.
The nurse left the quarantine zone, keeping her eyes to the ground, not looking at the elegant lady and the two children sitting in the private waiting area. She didn't have to say anything, the lady knew that her husband would not make it. She knew even before she answered the phone that something had happened.
"You can go and speak to him now" said the nurse, with a worried look in her eye as she gave the lady a plastic apron and surgical mask. The lady could not say anything, for fear that her emotions should be displayed in public. Even though it was a supposedly private bed, the media would know within 10 minutes the state of her husband. She needed that 10 minutes of peace with him.
Lord Gerard, barely recognizable in his current state, twitched spasmodically in his bed slightly. It was only just noticable, but she knew it would be torture for a man who had always been in control of not only his body, but the entire nation. She sat in the chair next to his bed, and grabbed his hand and held it. He awoke at the presence of her hand upon his. For a moment she saw the confusion cross his face as he remembered where he was. Then she saw the horror appear, as he remembered what had happened.
"Tracey..." he hoarsely whispered, "My dear..."
"Henry..." she cried. She knew she had to be strong for his sake
"Tell them," he said gasping for air, "Tell them to not..."
"Tell who? what?" but it was futile, he was once again unconscious. The mysterious synthetic poison was working, and despite the filtering of the blood, the doctors knew that at best he would have three more days, those three days however would be such agony, that they had him on a dose of morphine that would make most people completely incomprehensible.

5/3/2008
The government of Lapse today was plunged into chaos after First Lord Henry Gerard was rushed to hospital following a meal with Grant Edwards, The CEO of hotel management company InnerSol. The government and doctors have not commented on the cause of death. The wife of Lord Gerard, Tracey-Lee Gerard did mention that her husband was in quarantine in a slip of the tongue today.
It is not known what the agenda was on the lunch with Mr Edwards. A spokesperson for InnerSol however did offer their best wishes for a speedy recovery of Lord Gerard. Mr Edwards has been unavailable for contact and has not returned to his house since the lunch.
It is known police are questioning witnesses to the First Lords illness, however they are not declaring it an attempted homicide yet. They ask that anyone who had been in contact with Lord Gerard within the last 48 hours to report to a hospital for a check up. They are also asked to contact police.
Lord Gerard is Lapses' longest serving first lord after been elected to the position 29 years ago at the age of 27. He was the youngest first lord ever elected. He is leader of the Access party, and in his time in power has equalized the social levels within Lapse, to an extent where home ownership of full time workers is 85% and homelessness is less than 0.05%. He donated large amounts of money to many different charities and only recently gave 50% of his annual salary to Brain Disease Research Bristle, A regional charity dedicated to finding a cure for cerebrovascular disease.

Captain Kizmin Russel, of the Lapse Federal Police, caught the elevator up to level 17. She had not been to level 17 before. Level 17 was infact so top secret that most of the police in the LFP did not even know it existed. Level 17 was home to the con men. The con men were named because they were completely confidential. They were people who knew information that was so incredibly vital to the safety of Lapse that they were fitted with remote controlled suicide implants - Devices inserted into the neck that when activated would sever the spinal cord, such that they would take their information to their death. Kizmin had heard rumors of the conmen but until today, she did not know they existed. She had arrived at work, and had been delivered a latter by a courier to come to level 17. The letter included the password she could use to access the elevator one time only.
As she stepped out of the elevator, the first thing she noticed was how the level was completely normal. In fact it was so normal that it was almost forgettable that she was at level 17. She guessed that it was designed like that. A non distinct looking individual approached her, and said "The commander is through the door, I'll show you" and walked off. Kizmin followed at 2 metres distance, taking in her surroundings. She knew that everyone in the room would be looking at her, however when she turned around, everyone was doing exactly the same thing as they were a minute ago.
The man that showed her to the room and closed the door behind her, and took position on the corner behind the commander. The commander was a woman of athletic build, and Kizmin believed was very attractive. Their eyes met for a few seconds before the commander started: "Miss Russel, we have brought you up here because we believe that we require your help. We have watched your progress and you have solved more political cases quicker that anyone in the department. We feel that you would be incredibly useful in one of our investigations at the moment. Before we tell anymore details however you must say whether you are in or out. If you are in, your pay will be increased by seventy thousand a year. If you decline you will return to your old job in gang inspired political issues. We will leave you alone to decide for five minutes." The commander got up to leave, but Kizmin stopped her:
"I'm in" she said hastily.
"Good" said the commander. She noticed that Kizmin was looking at the man in the corner, "Don't worry about Harold" the commander said, he is safe. She the proceeded to give Kizmin the briefing.

The protests over this statement soon grew violent a division of the Lapse Land Forces has been deployed to the city to maintain civility. There have been peaceful protests in most other major cities in Lapse, and police are keeping a close eye on protesters to ensure that they remain civil. The opposition party, Appeal, has removed councilman Firtil from his position temporarily, claiming he has broken party rules applying to talking to the media. No members of the opposition have yet retracted or made any effort to condemn his announcement.
