In a lavish dawn ceremony held today at the Holy Cathedral of Saint Abraham of Smolensk, His Most Holy Majesty Emperor Nikolai I was proclaimed Supreme Patriarch of the Generian Orthodox Church with the blessing of the Generian Council of archbishops, all 70 of whom were present along with a slew of Imperial nobles and government officials. Since his coronation last year, amid a storm of religious unrest incited by the priest and folk hero Father Zinova of Alexiograd, the Emperor has worked to both strengthen the Generian Orthodox Church, which had suffered a decline in power and prestige in the reign of Nikolai’s father Kazatmiru, and his father in turn, Antonius I.
Though there had been reports of conflict between some of the more powerful clergy and the Emperor, who has long aspired to return the role of Supreme Patriarch from a ceremonial position to one of true leadership in the church, apparently differences were resolved at the 34th Grand Council of Bishops held last week in Generia City. Since the death of Father Zinova, the city has become a holy site and place of pilgrimage for pious Generians, as it is widely reported that the Cathedral of Saint Michael was the site of some of the holy man’s greatest miracles, and is considered the center of the revival of the Orthodox Faith among average Imperial citizens.
Following the ceremony, which consisted of a complete Orthodox service said by the revered Archbishop Mikhail of Belgrade, the Emperor made a brief speech to the vast crowds that had gathered in the square outside. He called for unity between Christians of all denominations, and swore that not only would he continue to root out moral relativism and secularism in Generia, but promised to “extend the hand of Christianity like a great shield over Christians in all nations who find themselves persecuted and repressed.” At the conclusion of his speech, the Emperor called upon the Catholic Imperium (the typical Generian term for the nation of Doomingsland) to put aside political differences with the Empire and to unite with the Orthodox Church in order to “spread the teachings of Christ and protect Christian enclaves the world over.”
It is a well known fact that the Doomani Emperor Maximus has already given his strong support to the Generian Emperor’s regime. Furthermore reports of Doomani volunteers serving beside Generian troops against secularist rebels in western Generia have been widespread.
