Call to Power: a trip through the looking glass

Background Information:

The Mountainous Republic of Call to power is thought to be the only functional Green democracy in the world and furthermore ranked as one of the most peaceful nations on Earth due to it theoretically having never gone to war in all of its history.

However, the nation is becoming increasingly interventionist in world politics putting aside considerable funds for the defense department and foreign investments.

The government itself rests upon a loose Proportional representation model, the upper house has traditionally followed a more meritocratic model due to trade unions holding a significant sway over the elections candidates and the lower made solely by coalitions of small local parties.

The governments presidential race (held once every 10 years) is said to be the key to controlling both houses due to the new powers act of 1996 giving the President a 25% vote in most decisions of state and due to the influence needed to secure the position.

Defense:

The Military of Call to Power has recently gone through extensive rearmament and is now capable of proving itself more than a match for its immediate strategic rivals however the real strength comes from its logistical arms which have decades of skill and training providing aid and supplies for developing nations.

Ground forces

Based on the principle of a small highly trained force, on paper the army looks like a possible weak asset with little in the way of a MBT force, in practice it has proven itself to be a tough adversary. Traditionally the army has followed a strategy of keeping and holding key positions preferring to wear down numerically superior numbers with a trademark skill included in its artillery and air corps

Air Force

An odd paranoia exists within the Republics military elite of a home front nuclear engagement leading to significant anti-air and interceptor numbers within the home islands. Mainly elite pilots man the small bombing wings the Air force does provide trained to take out enemy airfields and launch sites deep within enemy territory before a first strike can form.

Navy

The Naval arm affected by the same paranoia as the air force, runs a significant submarine program hoping that its extensive hunter-killers can keep the nearby waters clear enough to provide a greater flight time for enemy missiles. A large surface fleet does exist however, that provides cover for long-range logistical operations and coastal support for its Marine Commandos.

WMD

The Republic has long been opposed to the idea of large-scale indiscriminate weapons and as such has neither offensive Biological, Chemical or Radiological weapons in its arsenal.

History:

Largely uninhabited until 1640 when significant pirate activity upon British shipping caused King Charles I to commission a small expedition of 200 to colonize and hold the islands against pirate activity. With the English civil war the crowns influence was broken to a degree that the islands eventually formed its own sovereign government an incident that was quickly forgotten in the turbulence on the English mainland.

The Islands remained largely unimportant and non-aligned until the beginning of the cold war when it become an area of significant interest for nuclear installations operated by the US however; public opinion soon forced the government of the 1980’s into following a strict anti-nuclear stance forcing the US to remove its missile sites.

OOC - I object! Belschaft is a 'green' 'democracy'. It's just that the green refers to the comforting glow of Uranium, and it doesn't matter who you vote for, as the corparations are still in charge.
