Svarog Class Monitor
Destruction when you want it, where you want it, at a price you can afford

In these modern ages, it can be extremely difficult to achieve the necessary concentration of firepower to secure landing beaches, provide naval fire support in coastal and near-coastal areas, or simply raise havoc with enemy cities and industries. Thankfully, that difficulty is no longer present.

With five hundred vertical launch cells and the capacity of holding up to three thousand extended range GMLRS rockets, Devalt Industries’ new Svarog class monitor (http://z4.invisionfree.com/NSDraftroom/index.php?showtopic=2918&view=findpost&p=3030699) is capable of releasing an unprecedented amount of devastation. Entire armies may be crushed by a single vessel, creating perfect opportunities to land your own forces or clear the way for and already present army to continue advancing.

But the Svarog isn’t merely powerful, it is also resilient. Built with a double hull, redundant and zonal electrical and firing systems, and an innovative impact absorption system to lessen the damage caused by the strike of an anti-ship missile, each of these ships is capable of taking multiple hits and still continuing the fight.

Each Svarog class ship is also affordable. A fully functional, though unarmed, Svarog costs a mere 832 million USD. With a crew size of only 72 and powered by a pair of General Electric LM6000 gas turbine engines, the operating costs are similarly kept to a very small level. The small crew number also allows for a level of comfort that is higher than the norm, including a sauna for crew use and recreation.

The Svarog is a proven design currently available at the Grand Newyark Shipyard in Havenite Rosdivan. Already several vessels have been delivered to the United Realms of Hamptonshire where they have been commissioned as the Kommandør class. A 2.5% discount is currently available to those who purchase through the International Mall. (http://z4.invisionfree.com/NSDraftroom/index.php?showtopic=2946)

For those too lazy to actually go to NSD for the ship writeup and statblock:

Svarog class monitor

The Svarog class monitor is the latest offering by Devalt Industries for the international market. The Svarog class is intended to support amphibious landings and to supplement the firepower of fleet carriers in raids against coastal targets. By taking an already in use tanker design and modifying it with a number of VLS cells, a cheap and nearly off the shelf capability is provided, allowing for the simultaneous production of a large number of hulls as compared to a specialty design.

Measuring seven hundred feet long and slightly over one hundred feet wide, the Svarog displaces just under forty-five thousand tons at full load. With a pair of General Electric LM6000 gas turbines providing 60,000 horsepower each, a Svarog is easily capable of making up to twenty five knots and travelling up to six thousand nautical miles without refuelling. While the use of a conventional gas turbine instead of a nuclear reactor is unusual for a Rosdivani ship, this ship is built specifically for the export market and affordability. The extra expense of a nuclear reactor and the requirement for specific crew training on those reactors, which are likely to be non-standard for a foreign naval fleet, mitigated against the use of nuclear power. In order to extend the range, the Svarog is fully equipped for underway replenishment and does possess a small helipad for vertical replenishment by helicopters or other VTOL aircraft in the H-60 class.

The armament is the crucial element of the ship of course. Located in the midst of the ship are five hundred single celled VLS launchers, gathered in one hundred twenty-five groups of four each. Each of these launchers is capable of launching missile canisters up to 28” wide, 283” long, and weighing no more than nine thousand pounds. A standard suggested Devalt Industries loadout involves Tomahawk cruise missiles, sextuplet packs of extended range GMLRS rockets, and navalized ATACMS. As one can readily see, the Svarog has the potential to carry up to three thousand rockets, a tremendous load of destruction capable of ravaging entire armies if properly used.

As befitting its designation as a monitor, and its conversion from a tanker hull, the Svarog does not possess much in the way of an electronics suite. Although it does possess the capacity for datalinking with other ships and aircraft (customized to each nation’s standard datalink system by Devalt Industries), and it does possess a limited ESM capability, in the interest of reducing costs, this was kept to a minimum.

Although the Svarog is not a warship in the traditional sense, each one is still a high value asset. Additionally, it can readily be expected that, due to its high degree of destructive potential, an abnormally large amount of resources will be dedicated to its destruction. Finally, it is a matter of professional pride for Devalt Industries that their ships be highly survivable vessels.

A reduction in the radar cross section of the vessel would be highly desirable, but, due to the fact that it is a tanker conversion and because the volume requirements of the armament necessitate a large ship, no significant reduction in radar cross section was possible. As a result, the electronics countermeasures system (an SLQ/32(V)3) is not as effective as it might otherwise be.

The softkill and hardkill self-defense methods are controlled automatically through the Mjolnir Self-Defense Suite™. This includes not only the ECM, but also two Rolling Airframe Missile systems, chaff, IR decoys, and other decoys, both airborne and waterborne.

However, it must be expected that this will not stop all incoming ordnance and the ship itself may be hit. Thus, it is necessary to design the ship to contain the damage from such hits and continue to function. As a first measure, there is several feet of separation between each of the blocks of VLS cells. Further surrounding each block is two inches of high grades steel. Thus, even should one of the blocks be catastrophically destroyed, the detonation should be limited and not cause a chain reaction nor would it disable the ship itself.

Both the firemains and the electrical power supply are zonal in nature. This means that, should there be damage in one area, this will not shut off the power or water supply in the other zones. The water supply, in particular, can be routed around areas where the main firemain loop has been damaged. A vulnerability does exist in the propulsion however, as there is only a single engine room. Flooding or a missile hit in this room will thus knock out the entire propulsion system of the ship.

In the event that the watertight bulkheads fail or the compartment is otherwise opened up to the water, a foam may be sprayed into the compartment. This foam quickly solidifies, helping to keep the water out and preserve the buoyancy of the ship. However, this is a last ditch measure, for this solidified foam prevents the use of the compartment after it is deployed.

In between the inner and outer hulls of the ship are side-impact panels designed to resist the impact of anti-ship cruise missiles. These are composed of four layers of four-inch thick concrete and a honeycombed artificial rubber five inches thick. This isn’t intended to prevent the penetration of these anti-ship missiles, but rather, it is intended to absorb the kinetic energy of their impacts. During the 1982 Falklands War, much of the damage that led to the loss of the British destroyer HMS Sheffield was from the sheer force of the Exocet missile’s impact, as the warhead of the missile never detonated. The firemain was holed, generators were knocked offline, and watertight hatches were damaged such that they could no longer be fully closed and thus lost their functionality.

Habitability is also a strong concern with Devalt ships. As a result, the minimal accommodation is a four bed stateroom, even for enlisted crewman. Both the captain and the executive officer have their own personal suites. Additionally, the ship possesses its own sauna for the enjoyment and relaxation of the off-duty members of the crew.

Encrypted Transmission

Hostilities have escalated in our ongoing conflict and we our production of monitors/arsenal ships will not be able to keep up with the demand of the current conflict.

The Senate has authorized an obscene spending bill that allows us to begin acquisition of the Svarog class Monitor, which we wish to purchase 50 of, and we'll pay up to $30 million dollars more on each ship to get them built as fast as possible.

OOC confirmation of orders. Sorry, but I can't get myself to write up a decent IC post for it for some reason.

To: Devalt Industries
From: High Admiral Heinrich Fulier

With the possibility of a massive war on the horizon, Volzgrad would like to purchase several of the Svarog monitors. Overall, we would like to buy 30 of these mighty ships for our fleet. All the money necessary will be immediately wired to you upon confirmation of the sale. Also, we are rather interested in other products you may be selling (please provide link). Once the Svarogs have been acquired then we shall give them the designation of "Black Hammer class siege ship". It has been a pleasure doing business with you.
