Parliamentary Elections for Faurea (Open!)

Faurea
13-04-2008, 15:07
Due to recent events, Parliament has agreed to hold elections. These elections come three years earlier than expected, due to the splitting of the Aria and Darshi islands along ethnic tensions. The previous Arch-Minister, who is the head of state and government, was ousted in a no-confidence vote. Here are the candidates and a little bit about their party's philosophies:

1. Aranethon Wazzi: Untiy Movement
Background: Wazzi, a former MP, has been strongly against the independence issues of the Aria and Darshi islands. Many predict a strong run for Wazzi. He stresses the importance of working together and getting our economy back and overall uniting under the fact that, "We are Faureans, that should be just enough cause. You are citizens of the freeist nation in the WORLD."
Philosophy: Nationalism, Imperialism, Centrist economics, Liberal in social issues, populism, promotes overall unity of the state. Against neutrality, saying Faurea should take a more active role in the world.

2. Rex Vera: Conservative Coalition
Background: Vera, while against Aria and Darshi, is not so vehemently opposed to it, calling Wazzi an extremist when it comes to the split.
Philosophy: Moderate on social issues, conservative fiscally, semi-nationalist, plutocratic. Supports neutrality.

3.Andreas Lori: Civilocratic Party
Background: Despite the ousting of Arch-Minister and longtime friend Fazi, Lori still thinks that his Party's "laissez-faire" policy still appeals to Faureans, despite the recent split. He still remains hopeful that his party will keep its majority in Parliament. " It is a shame,"" he said, "but now we realize we must still work together."
Philosophy: Identical to United States Libertarian Party. Still supports national neutrality policy, saying it is better to remain a neutral nation.

4.Terra Brea: Liberal Union
Background: Brea is only the second women ever to run for the Arch-Minister position. If elected, she would be the first to hold the job. "Our welfare state is terrible because we don't have one. We can't provide for our lower classes. I plan on fixing the large rich-poor gap in our confederacy."
Philosophy: Centre-Left on every issue. Supports neutrality.

If your not clear on certain issues, feel free to ask any or all of our candidates. Feel free to endorse as well.

Seville,

And with an amazing lead, many polls show Aranethon Wazzi's Unity Movement to be the main leader in the first day of voting. Although this is only the first day and many votes must be counted before determining a winner, many predict the Movement to win, despite the Liberal Union gaining. Whats even more surprising is that the Civilocratic Party has a very slim to none percentage in the race. The CP has been the leading party for the past two elections, but this time may be radically different. But Andreas Lori, the main Civilocrat candidate remains hopeful. "After all," said Lori, " there are still two more days ahead."

It appears as though the will be able to do a debate. However, different candidates may be at different times.

Message from Aranethon Wazzi:
Dear fellow friends at the Moralite times,
I have recently recieved questions from your national newspaper and I have prepared my answers for each.

1.What is your stance on Faurean expansion?
If elected, I am looking for any and all expansion oppurtunities. Because of our neutral stance, we cannot colonize or expand, which at times may be ok, but our economy will not grow and we will not have a presence anywhere else. If we expand, so does our economy, and as does our population happiness. Everyone's happy when they make money.

2. What do you believe the governments role in the economy should be?
Our confederate government seemed like a good idea at the time of its formation, so everyone could somehow unite(although that is not the case anymore) and still retain some cultural independence. Unfortunately, it became so decentralized because our government, being restricted by libertarian policies and our weak influence, folded under pressure from these ethnic terroist groups. I say we should not divide along ethnic lines, we should be as a "great melting pot" of different cultures but celebrate that we are FAUREAN. But overall, the government's role should be big enough to provide and care for its people, so that the citizens are happy.
I hope that answers some questions.
Sincerely,
Aranethon Wazzi

Message from the Untiy Movement Headquarters:
Thanks a plenty for the generous donation to a just cause to unify our glorious land. Thank you
-Aranethon Wazzi

Here are the views of the different parties:
On the Holy Church:
1. Wazzi: We celebrate all religions, everyone has a right to worship freely.
2. Vera; I have to agree with my opponent on this one.
3. Lori: Same.
4. Brea: I think its all consensus.

On overseas trade:
1. Wazzi: If elected, I will make sure we open more trade, but only enough to protect Faurean interests.
2. Vera: I still support neutrality, but I do agree we should open up more trade.
3. Lori: We should trade, but we don't want to much outside influence.
4. Brea: Stay neutral, open trade to everyone, but protect our own buisnesses.

On the Waldenburg Empire:
1. Wazzi: I will set up trade with your nation and establish diplomacy with you. However, I will always keep my nation's interests at the forefront.
2. Vera: We will be willing to open relations with your nation.
3. Lori: we will establish diplomacy only if your nation respects our neutrality.
4. Brea: We welcome you with open arms.

Wow, thank you , thank you, thank you, Mr. James, for your very generous donation. And yes, you may get an autographed photo. I have sent you one in the mail.

On Religion:
1. Wazzi: I am a recently converted Raianist. (The orginal religion of our islands, as we were once a theocracy.) We should always allow freedom of religion.
2. Vera: We should allow religious freedom, but to make fun of one's relgion should be outlawed.
3. Lori: Freedom of religion, government has no say in those matters.
4. Brea: We should ALWAYS support relgious freedom, although I disagree with Vera, we should be allowed to speak out if we want.

On Nuclear Weapons/Power
1. Wazzi: If it creates jobs for the poor, we should have nuclear capabilities for energy and for defense, just in case.
2. Vera: Only nuclear weapons for defense. Nuclear energy is hazardous.
3. Lori: Again, the people should do whatever they please.
4. Brea: Right Andreas, like that even makes sense. We should definitely use nuclear energy as alternate fuel, but we should disarm nukes, as they are devastating.

The Environment:
1. Wazzi: If we cannot be proud enough to protect our environment, then how can we be proud enough to protect our rights? Our climate is what brings buisness.
2. Vera: Only protect the beaches, but develop the rest for nightclubs and such.
3. Lori: Government has NO say on what a citizen can or can't do on their own land.
4. Brea: ...riiiight...yeah, I've always been a green person. I have to go with Aranethon on this one.

Info on Aria and Darshi:
The story behind this is that Aria and Darshi are two of the three major islands in the Faurean archipelago. However, they contain different ethnic groups from those on Rea island, the main island. These two states were incorporated finally into the Confederacy in 1955. However, under Conservative leader Ariz Ari, their language wasn't recognized and there culture suppressed. They did not worship Raianism, but were almost forced to. Ethnic tensions from these islands caused a civil war, which ended in 1978, with more government decentralization. Since then, government's controls kept getting looser and eventually both islands voted to declare independence, because they felt as though they were their own nation in the first place.

Election Time: Who is the Front-Runner?

Seville,
After the first days voting in the Faurean islands, it appears as though Aranethon Wazzi, the former Parliamentarian and one-time supporter of both Fascism and Communism, has taken a strong lead. "Our citizens are tired of feeling like there is no leadership" said Wazzi at a press conference outside campaign headquarters. "No one's united. There is no government to care for the greatest citizens in the world. I plan on changing that, and I think others are ready for that change." Some other surprises from voting include the close second place of Terra Brea, the former first female mayor of Seville and Parliamentarian. Although she has not been an MP for long, Ms. Brea has led a strong campaign for more change and , if elected, not only would she be the first female Arch-Minister, but she would also be the first from the Liberal Union to hold the job since Liono Roia did in 1990-1994.

-Seville,
Another day of voting and yet another very interesting race. Although Mr. Aranethon Wazzi still holds the lead as the exit polls of the second day close, it is not as large as many thought it would be. LU candidate Terra Brea is still very close behind by only a few votes. "There is much excitement in these elections" said political journalist Roro Ferroro earlier today in an interview with the Journal. "There is also a lot of anxious feeling to see how much radical government change there will be if Mr. Wazzi is elected, or how well will the possible first female Arch-Minister do. It will definitely be interesting to say the least."
