"Your Majesty," The messenger said softly, bowing low, "Your cousin, the Princess Esrina, awaits your arrival."
King Tor II was only 18 years old, he had been King for less than 3 months and already there was a threat to his reign over Suzannyah.
"Tell Esrina that if she wishes to speak, she must come to me," Said Tor, straightening up in his chair, "I await her arrival."
"Yes your Majesty." The messenger bowed once more and swiftly left
The Princess Esrina, daughter of Princess Ciara, sister to the late Queen Suzanne III, had decided that she held significant rights to the throne. She was a good 2 years older than her irresponsible cousin and knew a lot more about how to rule a nation, her nation.
Esrina patiently waited in the throne room of the Royal Palace, tracing a long finger across the fine velvet cushioned seats, not daring to sit on them. She didn't want to jinx herself and besides she didn't feel quite right in the room where her uncle, the previous King, had been murdered.
"Princess Esrina," The messenger bowed as spoke in hushed tones, "The King wishes for you to make your arrival in his chamber swiftly."
Esrina smiled a thin smile, her eyes searched the messengers face as he stood up straight.
"You may lead me to his chamber, I am only happy to play by our great King's rules." She said politely, only hinting sarcasm in her words.
Tor remained seated as the messenger escorted Esrina into the room, idly flicking specks of dust from the arms of his grand chair.
"Your Majesty." Esrina spoke loudly, curtseying to her cousin.
"No need for such formalities here Esrina," Tor sighed, "I know what you're after."
Esrina stood still, glaring through piercing grey eyes at her cousin the King. Tor innocently gazed back through his warm green eyes, careful not to appear to fierce.
"We both know that the crown would be much safer upon my head," Esrina said harshly, "And the nation would rest so much better upon my shoulders."
It would be true to say that Esrina was an imposing figure to stand up against, she was much taller than the King and practically oozed intelligence. She had the presence of a Queen.
"Both the crown and the nation are safe in my hands Esrina, but I thank you for your concern." Tor smiled, knowing full well that this only irritated his rival more.
"You may not know this," Said Esrina, "But I am soon to be married, the crown will surely be passed on to me."
Tor had not known of this, but if what she had said was true then he had to find a wife.
"I am also soon to be married," Tor lied, "So I think it best that you abandon your futile attempt, goodbye Esrina."
Esrina's eyes flashed as she searched Tor's face for the telltale signs of a liar, her attempt falling flat as she was ushered from the room.
She left the palace and crossed through the darkness to her carriage in the icy cold. Her sapphire dress swung about her ankles and her long dark hair whipped her cheeks as she spun around and gave one last glance to the palace.
"It will be mine." She growled
Tor watched from the tall windows as his cousin left, then immediatly turned to the messenger.
"Contact Liberty Answell, I need to find a wife," He said urgently, "As soon as possible."
