10th of April, 1962, Djatini, Dominion of Djanvallaland

"...is, in this, the year of our Lord 1962, absolved of allegiance to that Empire."

A standing ovation greeted Lumboldt Kircher as he concluded a historic speech that unilaterally declared the independence of Djanvallaland and the creation of the Djanvalla Republic. What was perhaps most astounding was that the local administration had not even informed the government back in Exponent of the plan to hold a parliamentary vote on independence. Hardly less surprising was that the vote had passed without a single dissenting voice in Djatini, the Dominion's capital, which the new Republic's parliament was about to rename Kircherstadt, in honour of the colonial Prime Minister it intendend to make President.

The Djanvalla Republic was sticking out its very young neck by the unilateral move. Populated by just 4.5 million souls, Djanvallaland was a small part of the African empire commanded by vastly more powerful Exponent, and the breakaway Parliament was a 100% white affair in a nation with three blacks for every European.

Possibly even worse for the Republic's future, Djanvallaland had thousands of square kilometres of world-class agricultural land on which crops and, more importantly, prime livestock had been raised for years to relatively great financial benefit in the Empire, and also contained large deposits of gold as well as economically viable deposits of iron, other useful metals, and natural gas, and had smaller but not entirely insignificant oil reserves. The Republic had the potential to become quite wealthy as minor African nations go, but perhaps also reason enough for the declaration of independence to be seen as more than just an affront to honour.

Worse yet, the dominion's small but fairly well-regarded white-dominated security forces appeared to be mobilising...

OOC thread here! (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=553783) Drop by, we're still interested in getting one or maybe two more colonial powers involved, and I'm open to wider international reaction. We're starting out in the 1960s, as you can see, in order to build my nation's history and explain how we came to be a racially segregated pariah state.

Chancellor Marcellus Goldglove had just exited a top secret meeting concerning the deployment of Exponential Honor Guard to Sampeng, a nation far across the world, when an aide delivered him the news. Djanvallaland was going to try and break away from the Empire. This was an insult to the Empire, and to the Chancellor himself. Only a few decades before, the massive swath known as Polarus broke away in the north, and now yet another piece of the Empire was claiming independence. The Chancellor was not pleased.

Within the hour, the Djanvallaland Colonial Guards were ordered to claim all major cities within the region, and two more divisions were ordered to assist those soldiers to maintain order. Should the situation require it, more men would be sent into the area, but hopefully, with the way things were looking in the other colonies as well as in Sampeng, things would not get any worse.

Exponent was about to recieve another blow to its pride. A blow that would help to bring about the fall of the Second Imperium.

Djatini's resolve looks set to be tested along with the Empire's nerve as Colonial and Republican security forces mobilise in step. The Djanvalla Republic appeals to the world for recognition, hoping to win support from other newly independent nations across the globe, enemies of Exponent, and those looking to take advantage of the Empire's weakening. The Republic's policy of white-lead racial segregation, though, seems likely to sour many newly free or anti-imperial nations, and there are fears that Djanvallaland may struggle to win support and even recognition abroad.

At this time, however, few in Djanvallaland actually want to make an enemy of Exponent. Many whites are second or even first generation settlers whose origins are elsewhere in the Imperium, and while they want self-rule and personal profit, they view the Exponential authorities as competators rather than enemies, and regard them as unnecessary rather than actively cruel.

This leaves questions in the streets. Will Djanvalla and Exponential security forces actually fire on one another?

In the capital, far the region's biggest city with most of the population outside living either in native villages or white farmstead communities, newly republican police and soldiers have locked-down police stations and key infrastructural items, and as Colonial Guards move out, the locals have firm orders to remain in place.

In parliament, Kircher and his chief supporters work under armed guard as the President (or still Prime Minister to the Colonial authorities who do not recognise his Republic) prepares to receive recognition or demolition.

Colonial Guards began patrolling the streets of the cities of Djanvallaland, blaring out pro-Exponential propaganda and ensuring the people that they were still very much a part of the Empire. Guards walked up and down the streets, and began to enforce a ten o'clock curfew on the cities, and any who violated the curfew were considered criminals, and punished by up to a year in a work camp. The government was overreacting to this situation by emplacing the curfew, but they were scared, and did not know what else to do.

To make things more difficult for Exponent, an all black regiment of the Colonial Guard refused to move, and were now considered to be traitors. Several more regiments were called in to arrest these so called "traitors", and hopefully, they would go peacefully

At the same time, Prime Minister Kirscher was considered an enemy of the Imperium, and Colonial troops moved to place him under arrest.

OOC: Now you have an actually trained regiment for your new nation.

in Djatini, or Kircherstadt as the rebellious white authorities were already calling it, the new President gritted his teeth. The Colonials were moving directly against him personally, without hesitation.

Kircher made a snap decision. He and his private staff and several key newly appointed ministers would evacuate to the St.Quodvultdeus' Cathedral in the northwestern fringes of the city. A decoy party was sent into the main square in front of the parliament as Colonial forces approached, all chanting Kircher's name in response to the rallying cries of a young Parliamentarian with hopes of advancement under the new President, and apparently struggling to get a glimpse of someone in their midst, presumably Kircher himself.

In fact, the Presidential party slipped out a back way and hurried through back alleys and across a slum district before attempting to slip into the Cathedral via the catacombs. Kircher would barricade himself inside the largest religious building in Djanvallaland and dare the authorities to attack it. The saint's very name, of course, means, what God wills, and the rebel leader means to imply some divine legitimacy for his republican movement.

Lugging a radio set with them, the so called Republican Central Committee would attempt to rally security forces, and sent an illiterate black runner with a message to the pro-independence white militia Farmers' Action Society, authorising their captain to move against the Colonial Regiments attempting to arrest the dissenting black unit and to take command of that native Regiment. Kircher hoped to start a firefight before the black Regiment could be disarmed, and perhaps catch the Colonials in cross-fire between they and the farmers' militia, which probably would be outnumbered.

OOC: Hey sorry for not getting back sooner, I've been tied up

IC:

Exponential forces soon found themselves to be caught in between an angry group of armed farmers and the black regiment which they were sent to disarm. Officers began blaring messages of surrender into their bulhorns, and panicked soldiers looked to their front and rear only to see several hundred armed and angry men.

And then it happened. A nervous young Colonial Guardsmen fired off a round into the black regiments barracks. This was followed by several others, and soon a full blown firefight broke out. The Colonial forces were in no position to fight, being sandwiched in between the two armed groups, and were soon overwhelmed. Over a dozen were killed and many more wounded before the men were ordered to retreat back to the nearest town.

Meanwhile, in the colonial capitol, Colonial Guardsmen forced their way into the home of Presindent Kirscher, only to find him gone. Soldiers began pouring out into the city, hoping to find the rebel and containing the rebellion before it could spread. Already, Exponential blood had been spilt, and with the way the public was feeling in Exponent, another war would not looking very good for the Chancellor and his government.

OOC: Ah! I thought maybe this would die, since it was B&D's first thread, really, and went a bit quiet. I've gone and signed up for ESR, now, to get a fresh start. Still, this RP could be fun, anyway. I've no time just now, but we could still play it out, I suppose. I just don't know if I'll stick to it in the long run now that I'm in ESR. Back later!
