"Hello, citizens, you're watching Magdha News Network, the number one name in government-approved news. Today the National Assembly unanimously passed the Preservation of the Memory of Holocaust Victims Bill, which was then signed into law by the First State Commissioner as the Preservation of the Memory of Holocaust Victims Act. The Act stipulates that those who deny, trivialize, or attempt to justify the Holocaust are to pay a fine of no less than 25,000 Magdhan dollars and spend no less than five years in prison. In addition, all literature, films, and other media which deny, trivialize, or attempt to justify the Holocaust will be banned, and possession of such media will constitute a felony.

"Holocaust denial is not only a vicious insult to the memory of millions of innocent people, but also helps foster hatred, which in turns sows division and discord, dissension, and ultimately revolt," the First State Commissioner said. "Therefore, those who engage in this reprehensible practice are actively working to undermine the public security, and shall be duly punished."

Our beloved Papa, His Most Exalted and Enlightened Excellency Dr. Generalissimo J.L., President for Life of the Revolutionary People's State, Marshal of the Armed Forces, Father of the Nation, Harvester of Joy, Reaper of Prosperity, Indomitable Spirit, Invincible Warrior, Pillar of Knowledge, All-Seeing Guide, Blessing of the People, Defender of all Faiths, Paragon of Virtue, Champion of Justice, Leader of the Crusade against Communism and its Accomplices, and Vanquisher of Evil, has also spoken favorably of this new Act.

"Holocaust deniers are the worst kind of scum, in the same league as Marxist-Leninist gangsters," Papa said. "Such scum have no place in our fine society."

100% of those polled say that they 'strongly approve' of the Act.

Thank you for turning to MNN as your source for patriotic, hard-hitting, balanced news. Good night, and remember, Papa loves all his children very, very much."

While we here at Logan and Ky certainly agree that holocaust denial is barbaric and ignorant, a long prison term seems a bit harsh. Not to mention that trying to control the way people think is pointless and will yield no results.

IC:

We find this legislation abhorrent. While few in a nation with a 25% Jewish population would deny such an event, sending people to prison for this belief will simply mean they will come out of their five-year terms still believing that teh ebul z!0/\/@Z!z concocted an elaborate hoax.

Not only is it a violation of freedom of speech, it is a waste of taxpayer money to imprison people whose views will not be changed by their imprisonment.

I find it horribly distubring that a high-level politician from a respectable state has just used "L337 S34k" in an official communication.

F34r |-|i5 M4d L337 Ski115!

In all seriousness, however, I must agree with Senator al-Naki. The legislation in question is quite pointless, to say nothing of the fact that it surely violates Human Rights.

Nothing good will come from this. Mark my words.

"While Senator al-Naki is of course entitled to his - in my opinion, mistaken - views, I must cordially disagree that it is a 'waste of taxpayer money.' While it is true that imprisoned Holocaust deniers may still subscribe to their delusional beliefs after their release from prison, few will openly do so, as their experience in prison will have effectively deterred them from taking any action that would result in their re-imprisonment."

Excessive restriction also carries risks, Dr. Rothman. Just who defines what is identified as dissent now, and what is necessary to 'defend the public'? Some high-level bureaucrat, no doubt.

Measures such as this are but the tools of tyrants.

I said it before and I'll say it again, nothing good will come from this.

Exactly as I predicted. It is obvious to me now that you shall not see reason.

Henceforth, let it be known, the Imperial Federated States of Romandeos will not have any relations with the Revolutionary People's State of Magdha, past links necessary to maintain minimal diplomatic contacts.

If the RPSM wishes to change this status, they must repeal this lunatic legislation.

I will take these words in to consideration, of course. If the Parliament wants links re-established, my decision will be overturned and it will happen because my people desire it.

I also wish to note that what response is warranted depends on the difference.

I'd say most likely relations will remain severed for a bit, Maghda, but then, it is likely the Parliament will override what has been done.

Response of a random Allanean blogger

200 million Allaneans were slaughtered in the occupation of our nation by the Federation of Sentient Peoples.

Over 800 million Kahanistani were killed by Doomani in various occasions.

The Allaneans themselves exterminated 800 million Yurkans and 200 million Zentians.

Garrison II had at one point exterminated 1.3 trillion people in one nuclear strike.

How is the death of 5.5 million Jews, who were not even a majority among the victims of Nazism, so important it merits a law of its own?

"The Holocaust is by far the most famous genocide in history, as well as the one that most of the deniers tend to flock to. If we had 'denial' laws for every last genocide ever committed, we would be spending decades drafting every law, and it would take up more than our entire budget enforcing it."

Official Response from Yurka

The Eternal Empire of Yurka is unsure of how exactly to respond to your nation's newest law on the topic of the Holocaust. With no means of knowing exactly the average income of your typical Holocaust denier... We'll simply state that this is tantamount to punishing the stupid and uneducated and leave it at that. Regardless, we respect your nation's sovereignty and genuinely believe that the votes spoke for what the vast majority of your people believe is a proper punishment. We look on with interest to see where exactly this turn of events is going to lead up to.

Also, we would wonder if perhaps your jails will also serve to teach these Holocaust deniers the truth of the matter, using genuine facts and evidence?

We look forward to your nation's response.

Sincerely,
Foreign Ministry of Yurka
